Question Dear Scottish people, is there any way I can watch Scottish Gaelic independent fantasy film Hero(1982) online?
Hello hello everyone, I'm a random cinephile from far away in Asia who really likes to explore obscure films from different countries.
I'm a BIG fan of British cinema, especially independent films. And Hero(1982) is one I randomly encountered when strolling online.
What really intrigued me about this film is the fact that, the entire film is spoken in Scottish Gaelic. Since British films basing their primary language on the UK's regional languages are very rare, this film sounds absolutely fascinating. Not to mention that it is an independent film from 1982 and has a fantasy plot.
The problem here... I can't find this film anywhere at online. It seems like it was never released digitally or maybe the file is extremely hard to find.
https://player.bfi.org.uk/rentals/film/watch-hero-1982-online
This film does have VOD service for rent on the official BFI Player channel for £3.50. And I was really eager to pay my money for it and even created an account, but the problem was... apparently this website only accepts UK credit cards and no any other foreign debit cards...
This is where I met the end of the rope... So I'm asking for help on this Subreddit. I really wish I could get some help!
(I also asked this on r/AskUK)

Question St John Ambulance or St Andrews?
Hey all! I’ll keep this as short as possible.
Long story short, my fam and I are moving up to Scotland, round about the Moray/Elgin area. My mum grew up near there.
I currently volunteer for St John Ambulance Cymru, and I mostly do event cover first aid. As far as I’ve looked, St Andrew’s is an option, with a bit of a commute.
Are they similar enough that I can make a transfer? And those living in the area- is it easy enough to get to Aberdeen and Inverness via public transport to attend training/ events?
If you’re a member of St Andrew’s as well, I’d love to hear about your experience of being a volunteer as SJAC is my life and am disheartened to give it up.

Planning a surprise proposal on the Isle of Skye this winter — looking for local recommendations
Hi everyone!
I'm planning to propose to my girlfriend this winter, and I'd love to do something truly special in Scotland. She loves mountains, the sea, and the Scottish landscape, so the Isle of Skye seems like an amazing place for it.
I have a particular idea in mind and would really appreciate some advice from locals.
I'd love for us to go on a scenic walk, enjoying the views without her suspecting anything. At some point, we'd notice a drone filming the landscape. It would capture some cinematic footage of us, and then I'd surprise her with the ring and propose, with the mountains and sea in the background. Ideally, the video would end with a beautiful aerial shot of us surrounded by the landscape.
I'm looking for recommendations for local services and professionals who could help organise something like this, especially:
- Drone operators or videographers experienced in cinematic outdoor filming.
- Photographers who specialise in surprise proposals.
- Local proposal planners who could help coordinate everything discreetly.
- Any local businesses offering packages that combine photography, video and drone footage.
I'm particularly interested in locations where we could see both mountains and the sea. Quiraing and Elgol look incredible, but I'd love to hear your recommendations for the best spots, especially in winter.
Ideally, we'd go on a 1–2 hour walk, find a relatively quiet spot, and have a backup plan in case the weather doesn't cooperate. My budget for organising the proposal and filming is around £1,000–2,000, excluding travel and accommodation.
I understand that winter weather and drone regulations might limit what's possible, so I'm happy to adapt the idea to make it safe and practical.
If you've worked with any good local photographers, drone operators or proposal planners — or know a business that offers these services — I'd really appreciate any recommendations, links or personal experiences!
Thanks so much! :)

Update: American wanting to do something Scottish for his elderly Scottish neighbor to remind her of home.
- Where is she from? Glasgow. Promptly started speaking Glaswegian after I asked.
- What Scottish food do you like? Stovies are out, the thought of hurting animals bothers her and she’s mainly vegetarian. I specifically asked about tablet (she didn’t have a clue what it was) did I pronounce it right “tah-bl
it?”
- She said she does like scones. (I’ll need help with that, is there a specific Scottish preparation?)
- Whisky is out. She can’t stand the stuff. She drinks a beer here in the states called Natural Light, favored by the homeless, college, and high school aged kids for being extremely cheap.
Looking like I’ll have to find a piper and make her some scones. If anyone can give me an idea of what a Scottish scone is or if there’s a special preparation that differs from what I’d call a scone here in the states would be much appreciated.

Photography / Art Scottish Art Feedback
I’m an artist from the west of Scotland who does oil paintings of farm animals, especially highland cows.
Do people other than tourists like this sort of art? I’ve not managed to find my target audience yet and don’t know if I should be aiming at city folk that can’t look out their window and see farm life.
I also do pet portraits but love my farm animal paintings
Thanks for any replies
