Tire Recommendations

On an outback. Suburb driving in the midwest, occasional but not consistent gravel/dirt. Highway is a must. Studied with CoPilot but want some real world reviews. Gonna be buying for winter
Michelin CrossClimate2 or Falken Wildpeak AT Trail. For the wife’s car so I’m willing to drop some shekels for good tires, don’t want her skating on any TakaTakas (idc how durable Shane claims they are) or Ling Longs.

2026 Forester Hybrid advice

After straying from Subaru for my last two vehicles, I'm ready to rejoin the Subie Gang with a Forester. (I have previously owned a 2012 Impreza and a 2015 Impreza Hatchback). I recently relocated to a snowy region, and as an avid skier, I can't be convinced that there's a better AWD vehicle out there for getting to the mountains.

I'm debating between two new Foresters:

  • 2026 Sport Hybrid in River Rock Pearl (gray interior), MSRP $41,228 (dealer starting price $38,901)
  • 2026 Touring Hybrid in Autumn Green Metallic (black interior), MSRP $44,106 (dealer starting price $41,333)

I'd love to hear any opinions from current owners - which trim level did you go with and are there any features you love or could live without? And if you've recently bought a similar Forester, I'm interested in how much I should try to negotiate down the price.

Planning to buy within the next week and very excited!

Diff failed at 32k Miles

I have a 2021 Crosstrek Limited (second owner). Diff started humming around 31.5k miles after a long mountain road trip. The sound came loudest at 55mph or so, not the loudest in the world, but audible. After researching and coming across the 2021 Diff Humming TSB, I took it in at 32k miles because I was worried it’s on the way out. My symptoms lined up with those who’ve gone under that TSB on the forums.

Diagnosis at the Subaru dealership today showed it needs a new diff in line with the TSB.

Car is only 10 months out of warranty, I bought the Subie for its stellar reliability and performance reputation. Most of its life was in Virginia, barely any mountains. I live in Co and the car was brought here only a few months ago by the original owner (my friend’s dad).

Considering that there’s a TSB about the failure my car was diagnosed with, it’s 10 months out of time warranty, has only 32k miles, what are the odds that Subaru of America will grant me goodwill assistance? Service advisor said I had a better chance of calling them myself vs the dealership submitting a claim.

Killer Bee ELH and Coolant Leak

• Upvotes

Anyone running the killer bee ELH on their EJ257 and encountering heat problems impacting the thermostat housing? Killer bee doesn’t recommend wrapping the headers but the dealership is telling me it could be heat causing the thermostat housing to warp and leak. Leak only happens when the engine is warm or hot. I’m not sure the dealership is correct as the headers are made from SS321 which has low emissivity and there’s coolant inside the aluminum thermostat housing which should keep it well below any temperature that could warp aluminum. Anyone had similar issues? The thermostat housing, water pump, and lower radiator hose were replaced when I rebuilt the engine.

Just bought my first Subaru🎉 it's a 2000 forester and it has a Kenwood head unit that I really like and want to add Bluetooth to but instead of a Kenwood 13pin din plug on the back for the disk changer channel it has some other rectangular plug I cant find any information on so I'm wondering if anyone has wired one of these to a Bluetooth adaptor and can tell me how to wire it

HELP! Can’t decide between two used Subarus

Hello Subaru people! I’m new to Subarus but considering buying a used one. We are stuck between two used Subarus. Both seemed fine through Carfax. If any of you have any experience, advice, or anything we should consider, please let us know!

2021 Subaru Crosstrek Sport Utility
-47,263 miles
-OTD: $26,965
-1 previous owners
Pros: acceleration, gas mileage, not as much space in back but still plenty, very smooth ride
Cons: make and model known to have cvt and transmission issues

2022 Subaru Outback Sport Utility
-49,111
-OTD: $30,247
-2 previous owners
Pros: comfortable seating, heated seats, lots of storage in back, has a hitch receiver
Cons: more complex electronic components to fix down the road, emits white/gray smoke from emission pipe, TCV known issue for this make and model (covered under warranty?) a little sluggish when driving

HELP! Which Car??

I can buy a CPO Outback Touring XT in white with 5k miles on it for $35k before taxes (about $39k out the door)

OR

2026 Forester onyx black on black for $37k before taxes (probably about $41k out the door)

The thing is that i originally wanted black on black. But in my area i cant find ANY 2025 outbacks cause i dont like the 26’s. I was thinking about wrapping and getting rims for the white outback.

But the forester looks really good, just has less bells and whistles. would love opinions please!!!

So my brother-in-law was wiping off his back trunk just while we were talking after Frisbee Golf golfing, and he ran his finger across this one section of his outback and twice in a row it opened! Maybe it’s because the shadow I’m not sure but I thought I would post and ask if anybody’s seen this?

STi or new VB WRX ?

I am shopping for a fun weekend car (I am far older now). I remember wanting to buy a old bug eye when they first came out - but being that I was only a few years fresh out of high school - there was no way for me to afford that car at that time. Now that I am older I am looking for something not so hardcore, but something I can enjoy in all weather conditions, drive on weekends etc (with a handful of tasteful mods maybe) - but not far off from stock.

At first I was looking for a decent GC host car to build up the way I want (imo my favorite body style - and pulls the nostalgia strings big time). But I have only seen 3 or 4 come up for sale in the past few years.

Then I started looking at STis:

Every single STi i've seen has been either pretty beat up, had really tasteless mods done to it and the ones that have some life left in them are going for about the same price as a new VB WRX.
I am not looking to set track records - just something fun I can enjoy on weekends not worry about when it rains or snows that also with a bit of practicality. Maybe join some track days for fun.

I am leaning more towards a VB at this point since i'll get something new that hasn't been messed with.

What do you guys have/recommend ? I am personally a big fan of the EJ (regardless of what people say about them). Heard mixed things about the new FA engines.

I currently own a new '26 Tacoma that I am planning on keeping - so I have a daily if plans would change and I plan on going crazy with mods.

Saw this, left side of engine under the intake box, not sure if that’s the oil pump assembly on the left side of the engine or what. 2019 Crosstrek 2L

Found it after looking in engine compartment to find source of rattling and saw a small heat shield just laying on the belly pan.

Help with short legs

Driving my first Subaru and I love it…except
I have short legs and the seat cuts me off behind my knees. I know some models allow you to extend or retract a section of the seat in the front but mine won’t and is permanently extended. It makes driving awful! Even an hour is tough. I’m debating trading it in that’s how much it sucks. Before I do, anyone else have the same issue and found a solution they love? A cushion? New seat? Anything?

Mechanical Help 2017 Subaru Impreza Sport help

My brother was checking some stuff on my car today (2017 Subaru Impreza Sport) and he noticed the coolant reservoir was low. He shined a flashlight into it and it was completely empty. He opened the cap for the radiator as well, and it was basically empty too (wet film of coolant inside, not bone dry). I’ve been driving it for a bit now and it’s never once overheated and hasn’t been acting weird. Is this normal? I plan on driving it to work tomorrow and then seeing where the coolant is at in the reservoir after it had ran hot for a bit (not gonna open the cap while it’s hot obviously)

Remote start

I’m wondering what it costs to have the dealer install the remote start module. Internet says between 250-400. Has anyone had it installed on a new forester? We don’t want to pay for the subscription so looking into adding the remote start via the fob. Thanks. (Yes I’m aware of the distance limitations via the fob vs the app)

Mechanical Help Old Outback, new noises. Need help pinning it down. (With Audio)

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Reposting this again with audio and more info. You might need headphones/full volume to hear everything.

2000 Outback Limited Sedan, 4cyl auto. Just under 200k miles.

The car passed inspection just yesterday. I asked the mechanic to check out the noise, and they said they didn't hear anything obviously wrong, though they admitted that they didn't do a lot of road testing since they were quite busy.

This just started overnight. While under acceleration, the noise comes from somewhere in front.

I let off the gas at 16, 26, and 38 seconds in. Here, the sound comes from center console/shift knob.

It sounds quite loud through the microphone, but from the driver's seat it's not terribly loud and it doesn't get that much louder with speed/load. I can also feel the vibration at times when resting my hand on the shift knob.

Other than the noise, it drives the same as it always has. Accelerates, brakes, shifts gears, turns all normally. Temps are fine.

All fluids are at good levels, engine oil was just changed with inspection. Transmission fluid was drained/replaced recently due to getting the pan resealed. Had a weird episode where it slipped and banged into gear, then got a flashing AT Oil Temp light. Turned out to be low on fluid, so I got it topped up and it's been driving normally since. This was about a thousand miles ago.

From the previous post, someone suggested the driveshaft. I shimmied under the car and didn't see any obvious signs of rubbing, also nudged the ujoint at the transmission output and couldn't feel any play or see anything obviously wrong. CV axles both look ok, so maybe a wheel bearing? But i feel like that wouldn't explain the vibration at the shift knob when I let off the gas.

I'm honestly stumped at this point and the mechanics not noticing anything is reassuring on one hand, but not helpful on the other. Any guesses?
