Geneva Coop forgets that we speak French

Post image
91 Upvotes

More and more products sold at Coop have no explanation in French on the packaging. There are precautions for use translated at the back, as it is mandatory, but the type of product is not translated anymore. At first, this only applied to a few products, but now entire shelves are no longer translated. And I hate having to pick up my smartphone to find out how to translate words like 'fabric softener'.

I've always found it annoying to receive emails in German from Apple or Netflix even though I'm registered in French, and all my settings display French, including those that ask me in what language I should receive information. But it's more understandable: the majority of Swiss people speak German, so an international company will choose German by default.

But I find it less acceptable when you're in a shop in Geneva, a French-speaking city. Is it just me who gets annoyed with this?

UPS asking for obscene import fee 4k CHF!

Hi all, i have been living in switzerland (canton aargau) for a year now and have recently decided to ship my personal PC to switzerland.

I filled out an 18.44 and attached it to the parcel while shipping (well my sister did haha) - i presumed this would he enough to cover it as personal belongings and be exempt from vat.

After about a week i have recieved an invoice of 3707 CHF, valuing the goods at 44k CHF.

I was wondering if anyone knew the process of disputing this, since the pc is worth no more than 500 chf and its a number i really cant afford.

Thanks for any help, any and all will be very useful!

Note: image of the invoice in the comments ...

Did anyone manage to pre-order the Switch 2 - 40th Zelda edition in Switzerland?

Hi,

I preordered it on Digitec but they cancelled it because it was out of stock from supplier. Boo.

I don't kwow what to do now. I guess Ocarina of Time 3D is on the way but I have no Switch to play it.

I guess I'll be waiting for restock because I really want that one, but otherwise I'll get the normal Switch 2 with the replaceable battery if it's already available.

Does anyone know if it will be restocked anytime soon? Any official communication? Do you think they will keep up with the demand and it will be eventually obtainable without fight or it's dead?

Or a shop that still sells it? No scalpers or equivalent lower forms of life, of course.

What would you do?

Thank you!

Have a nice day!!!

Any english manga stores in switzerland?

While I do speak german I just don’t like reading german books or mangas. I could technically just order but I don’t want to wait that long. So are there any stores that have a lot of English manga too? I am specifically trying to find Black Butler.
Thanks in advance :>

Will Biel/Bienne soon have a french speaking majority?

The percentage of french speakers in Biel/Bienne has been steadily increasing in recent decades, going from about 30% a few decades ago to now close to 45%. Will this trend continue? What do you think of this situation? I remember reading that a century or two ago, some cities like Sierre in Valais/Wallis or the city of Fribourg had a german speaking majority, but now they have a french speaking majority. Will Biel/Bienne face a similar situation soon?

what should i do?

Hello hello,

So m an international student (from third country) living in Switzerland since 6 years. 3 months ago, I started looking for a job and had an interview with an employer. the interview went well and I was contacted 2 weeks ago for a final on-site interview. Yesterday I received an offer. The thing is that 2 months ago, I became disabled because of an intense reactive tinnitus / hyperacusis I developed that keeps me pretty much bedbound. What should I do ? should I talk to this with the employer ? should I simply reffuse the offer meaning i would have to leave switzerland (which i cannot even take the plane because of how awful my ears hurt). I’m completely lost

Six months of job search in Marketing

Post image
57 Upvotes

Hello all

As some others have shared it, I thought I might share my job search journey as well. I've been laid off with 2 months notice period earlier this year. I had now 4 months of unemployment.

I work in marketing. Some short context to myself: 10 years of experience in Marketing, i don't have a bachelor's or master's degree. I have a Federal Diploma of Higher Education which can also be called "Professional Bachelor" as of this month.

What I did:

  1. I created a CV and letter that was visually appealing while remaining ATS-friendly. I also tailored these documents to every single position I applied for.
  2. I prepared very well for the interviews. I researched the companies, their products, their marketing activities and the people I would be speaking with. I think that paid off, as I advanced from the first to the second round in almost 93% of the cases.
  3. For myself, quality was more important than quantity. I understand, in some sectors such as tech this might not be viable. For me however, I didn't send out hundreds of applications, but tried to make each one I sent out count.

For context: This wasn't in Zurich.

In the end, I received three job offers, turned down two and accepted one.

I know it can be frustrating, especially if you're just straight up ghosted or rejected. To all still searching: Keep going and keep it up.

Edit: Just a small change to a word.

Recent surge in data breaches

Spinning this off the Republik-Thread.

Is it selection bias or are we experiencing a lot of these at high-profile targets in Switzerland at the moment?

If this is in fact a trend, is it world-wide? AI-related (could be both on the attacker's and the victim's side)?

Happy Cola Cultural Achievement

I do consider the continuity of bringing new flavors quite iconic. Who would have thought Coop had it in it ?

Chronological order:

Happy Cola Classic
Happy Cola Zero
Happy Cola Zero Coconut Flavour
Happy Cola Zero Coffee Flavour
Happy Cola Zero Wild Berry Flavor
Happy Cola Zero Mandarine Flavor
Happy Cola Zero Yuzu Flavor
Happy Cola Zero Cherry Flavor
Happy Cola Zero Pomelo Flavor
Happy Cola Zero Caramel Flavor
Happy Cola Zero Mango Flavor
Happy Cola Zero Pink U.Cotton Candy
Happy Cola Zero Watermelon Flavor
Happy Cola Zero Orange-Van. Flavor

Which past flavor would you want to see back?

Disclaimer: I'm not affiliated with Coop in any way and do not get any compensation from them.

https://bvger.weblaw.ch/pdf/B-3186-2024_2026-09-21_dcd73752-4fb4-4402-ba39-eaca892b3498.pdf

a. den vollständig entbündelten Zugang zum Teilnehmeranschluss zur Nutzung von dessen gesamter Übertragungskapazität zu gewähren;

  1. September 2018:

Nationalrat streicht Art. 11c aus dem Gesetz (127 zu 57).

  1. November 2018:

Ständerat streicht den Artikel ebenfalls (22 zu 19).

  1. März 2019:

Gesetz wird verabschieded.

Februar 2020:

Swisscom verkündet, sie stellen auf P2MP um.

  1. Januar 2021:

Gesetz tritt in Kraft.

Tolle "Glasfaser" mit maximal 500Mbit up and down. Ein absolut schlechter Witz. Ich freu mich auf Monopolisten-Glasfaser in Müllqualität.

Danke Parlament, danke Swisscom.

Just got this email from them...

Unfortunate. Even more so because they didn't update since August? I suspect it's probably the same thing as with Framework Laptop where they got breached.

Metabase updated the cloud deployments and selfhosted users ofc have to do it themselves as they described in their blogpost.

For anyone who doesn't know yet: This newspaper is goated. They questioned what Palantir was doing in Zurich and Palantir wanted to censor them.

Why I always get electrostatic discharge at Migros?

It may seem's weird, but every time at the Migros (anywhere in Switzerland), I get a electrostatic discharge at some point.

First I didn't thought about it to much, but now I can not deny the truth any longer: I don't get a shock in any other supermarket (Denner, Coop, etc.) but the Migros!

I don't know if I am the only one in the world who suffer such an harsh treatement and I wondering if anyone else is suffering as I do?

Why do people like Basel? (why is Basel *like that*?)

I lived right outside of Basel for two years, went to museumnacht twice, swam in the Rhine every day in the summer, and partied a bunch of times. I’m very grateful for my time there but from day ONE it’s been clear it’s one of the most boring uninteresting cities I’ve ever been to.

When I go to Geneva or to Bern, I find both cities infinitely more exciting. Both are more beautiful than Basel, especially Bern, every single time I’m just flabbergasted at it’s beauty, the river is bluer, the shore is more beautiful with the incredible tall bridges and the steep hills, the residential areas are gorgeous and filled with beautiful trees, every turn there’s a stunning view.

Geneva and Bern also have way cooler spots, hip cafes, bakeries, bookshops, stores; there’s great cheap food in both of them (Geneva has Bain des Paquis, parfums de Beyrouth; Bern has some great little cheap hipster pizza places, and great cheap Asian food). And I seem to stumble upon these cool spots so naturally. While in Basel I am still yet to find a good Espresso tonic, or an affordable natural wine bar. Gosh, it’s borderline impossible to buy kombucha in Basel! The flavor variety is nonexistent.
Geneva also has the Bain des Paquis sauna by the lake, which is unbelievably cheap for how great it is…

As for nightlife, Basel is so ridiculously subpar next to Geneva; any evening at any place near Jonction or Grottes is gonna be way better than any Parterre one or Sudhaus parties.

And sorry for throwing this card: gay life in Geneva and Bern is way more exciting. Basel Grindr is a DESERT.

My questions are: 1. why would anyone choose Basel over one of these cities (to visit or to live); but most importantly 2. Why is Basel LIKE THAT? What culturally and historically has made it so calcified and boring? Is it all the banks? Big Pharma? White collars? I mean, Geneva is French not german (which explain why it’s cooler and more alternative, and lowkey leftist) but what about Bern? Why is Bern so much more hip than Basel? More students?

I know I sound judgmental but I’m genuinely very very curious to hear someone who genuinely prefers Basel’s perspective.

Just paid 5.50.- CHF for 50 Tablets of Ibuprofen in Jestetten, meanwhile in Switzerland...

I don't take ibuprofen often but I like to have it in stock and I do not like to be ripped off!

In Switzerland the cheapest ibuprofen you can buy is 8.50 chf and you also need prescription if you want more than just 10 pills or higher than 400mg.

I went to Germany in Jestetten today to buy some melatonin for my boyfriend (you need prescription for melatonin here, that's insane!!) And I figured huh since I'm here I might aswell get myself some ibuprofen while I'm here, expecting to also buy 10 tablets but at least for some cheaper price.

First thing a pharmacist asked me is "Do you want 20 or 50 tablets?" and I said "What?... What? Really? You can sell me that?" And she said "Uhh... yeah..? 🤨" then I said "Okay well how much is 50?"

"5,97€" she said.

I cannot express how angry and confused I was when I realised how much money I threw out buying expensive ibuprofen in Switzerland all this time. Why? Just why? And make melatonin available in stores for gods sake. It's a supplement, not a drug!

From today I am NEVER buying anything at the pharmacy here in Zürich, whatever I need I will go stock up in Germany, out of spite.

Help with Einfrage einkommenssteurbecheid 2021

Context: In August 2021 I began working as a farmhand on a farm in Appenzell Ausserrhoden. I worked there till December 2023, with almost two months breaks from cca. Christmas to February. Whenever I arrived, I went with the farmer to the Gemeinde and I filled out Gesuch Auslanderbewilligung formular and the farmer filled out the other side Arbeitsmarktilche Angaben. When I left for winter, we went again to unregister. I believe that was the only piece of paper that we signed, might have been one or (max) two more, I dont remember. (versicherung,...) I worked for him as an empleyee and not as selbstandig.

A week ago I receive a letter from SOVAR, asking me, since in 2021 they had me registered as a selbstandig, to provide them with a Slovenian (where im from) final income tax assessment decision for 2021 in order for them to provide me with a final determination of AHV contribution.

Question(s): How should I respond? Should I even respond? I dont want to pay anything, and from what I know, the farmer paid my AHV contibutions for the time, that I was working there. The letter has no date, till wich I am obligated to respond, and was sent through normal mail. And it doesnt reference any law, convencion, legal document, or anything of that sort. I am fixing on responding with through registered mail with a return receipt, telling them that during that time I was employed, asking them for clarification as to why do they have me as selbstandig and why do they need the slovenian final income tax assesment. And asking them to provide me with my *IK-Auszug for the said year.*

Advice would be appreciated greatly.
