Society/Culture I think professionalism is unnecessary

It’s all an act. Why do you have to wear uncomfortable clothing at an office job when you can get the work done the exact same in normal / comfortable clothes? Same goes for behaviors as well. The amount of customer service jobs that get upset when you go off script and talk normally to the customer is insane. Why do you have to speak like a corporate robot with no personality? Oh and don’t even get me started on the whole not letting employees sit thing. I find it stupid when I see a cashier not have a chair when they could get the work done just the same. Why make your employees uncomfortable for no reason? For the sake of some arbitrary ancient rules that is professionalism? Same goes for not accepting dyed hair or tattoos too (I don’t have either but it doesn’t bother me when I see employees having them). I could go on and on but yeah. Lmk your thoughts.

I feel kind of warm actually learning more about the recipe and the person who created it. It also usually has loads of sections about substitutions, make ahead instructions, freezing instructions that I find very useful.

Society/Culture I find hugging really strange

Why do we need to wrap our arms around someone and press our bodies together just to say hello or goodbye? I don’t understand how this became such a normal thing to do.

It’s especially weird when it’s someone you barely know. Sometimes you meet someone for the first time and they already want a hug. Even with friends and family, I don’t see why hugging is necessary every time you see each other.

The worst part is that people think you’re rude or unfriendly if you don’t want to hug them.

Society/Culture A Halloween costume should be scary in some way

A Halloween costume should be scary. I’m so sick of “Halloween costumes” just being like normal cosplay, or dressing like a celebrity. If you want to dress up like your favorite character - pretend that character turned into a zombie. easy. or a vampire version. done. throw on some blood fangs etc. for example, one year as a child I was Minnie Mouse as a vampire. obviously mean girls is the best example where because Lindsey Lohans character is sheltered from the ‘norm’ of just dressing sexy she shows up in a proper scary Halloween costume. also, you can be scary and still look sexy!

Society/Culture Our culture encourages us to mistreat things that are already badly mistreated and to pamper things that are already excessively pampered. If you believe in justice in this world then you should give your bad deeds to "good" recipients and your good deeds to "bad" recipients.

Health/Safety People who make therapy a routine part of their lives are not trying to get better.

• Upvotes

It's exactly like the title says. I see people who go to talk therapy every week or multiple times per week. They might go for quick relief, but they don't want to make actual changes in their lives. In fact, I feel like people use the fact that they go to therapy as an excuse not to solve their problems. They use the fact that they go to therapy to justify every bad behavior or reflex that they inflict on others, like, "Yeah, I know I did that, and it hurt you, but I'm trying to get better. I go to therapy." In the end, if I meet someone with years of therapy, I probably wont want to be around them. ( of course when i say therapy i mean talk therapy not psychiatry which treat trouble which are a lot more severe and can obviously take years to manage ).

Other I genuinely regret every time I’ve splurged on a super expensive hotel or a business class flight

I’m not poor and I come from a financially good background yet every time I’ve done these things, I’ve always regretted it. I don’t think it’s thaaaaaaaaat good.

Yes the amenities are nice and the services are good but paying thousands of extra dollars for a stay or a flight for that benefit is not amazing. I truly believe that you can stay in a regular chain hotel like Radisson Blu or Holiday Inn or something along those lines and have a good time. Every time I’ve went to one of those insanely expensive 5 star hotels I’ve been underwhelmed. I look at it and it’s beautiful and fancy but it’s really not that spectacular in my honest opinion. I would rather save the money which could honestly fund another vacation.

Same for business class flights. I would only upgrade with miles if I can. I would literally rather use the money and put it to another vacation or something.

I genuinely feel that the upgrades that cost thousands produce negligible benefits to my enjoyment

TV/Movies/Fiction I Really Love "Floating Head" Posters

I'm not sure why, but those types of posters just look awesome to me. It gives you a sense of every person you're going to see in the film, and maybe even a glimpse into who they are. They're very easy to look at as well, and cath your attention almost instantly. They look almost mythical, like a grand epic of some sorts. I think I prefer them to any other type of movie poster, even though I know that's a bit of a hot take.

Society/Culture As a man, I sit down to pee.

Thumbnail

reposting here because this subreddit probably will be more accurate as it is larger

i don’t understand the reason why people get all crazy when i say i sit down to pee. to be clear, i would never do this in a public stall because those toilets are absolutely gross. but in my own home or in a single toilet room i will sit down if i have to pee. isn’t it better for you to sit down, anyway?

the reason why im even thinking about this is because i talked to my dad (56) and he went all like “MEN SHOULDNT SIT DOWN TO PEE. WOMEN DO THAT. YOU MAY BE GAY, BUT YOU ARE NOT A WOMAN.” i think he’s stuck with the gender role bias or something because he realized he was getting all worked up about peeing and calmed it down. so, is this an unpopular opinion?

Other People are dramatic about the smell of body odor.

People act like they have to put on a hazmat suit and vomit the second they're in the same room as a person with a smell. They describe it so dramatically like they're smelling a corpse for christ sake. I've been near smelly people, I keep up hygiene and I can say without a doubt it's not that bad, a little unpleasant sure, but I'm not throwing my guts up at the sniff of it. They act like it's a war crime too, like maybe their deodorant wore off? Maybe they missed a spot showering, maybe they didn't apply enough that day? Maybe it's a hot day. Some people genuinely let people with feet fungus slide yet will throw tomatoes at somebody with a slight odour, like no Emily no need to publicly humiliate Billy at school because he marginally doesn't smell like flowers. No Timmy, your co-worker isn't a walking bio hazard, you don't need to wear a gas mask over something less noticeable than a fart.

It doesn't even smell that bad, a little gross smell you can ignore in the background if you're not digging your face in someones pits, you can suck it up, you can suck up somebody not looking conventionally attractive, you can suck up seeing somebody else happy when you're having a bad day, you can suck up a tiny acidic smell without keeling over. The only scenario I see it acceptable to visibly react is if someone has the smell of a neck-beard, but your average Joe in your academia/workplace probably doesn't smell to that extent and you can quit tip-toeing around normalizing a occasional smell when poo and piss is almost basically normalized, even dicks.

Society/Culture The marriage age doesn't need to be higher than 16.

• Upvotes

I had two friends who graduated high school, joined the military, and married their high school gfs. One of those couples is still together 20 years later with three kids. You get a decent amount more money for housing and whatnot in the military when you're married, and they'd have lost that if they'd had to wait.

According to the Unchained at last and PSB Frontline data that everyone cites on this issue, only 4.2% of marriages involving a minor involve someone younger than 16. Only .57% involve a minor younger than 15. Going deeper than that, they also measured gaps. The overwhelming majority of minor marriages take place within the 16-21 age bracket. So when they say something like this..

86% of all minors in these tracking sets were wed to adult spouses.

..they're inciting a bit of hysteria about it. The two minor marriages I personally observed were adult/minor marriages with like two year age gaps. It didn't seem like anything that needed to be illegal.

I kind of figured that what I observed was going to be a very common occurrence in the realm of minor marriage and I was right. There were several states in the recent wave that resisted going to a flat 18 but instead imposed a close-in-age exemption for minor marriages specifically for high school sweethearts and cases like I observed:

Idaho, Louisiana, North Carolina, and Utah allow 16yos to get married within a 3-7 year age gap, and Florida, Kentucky, Nevada, Georgia, Maryland, Ohio and Tennessee allow 17yos to get married within a 2-4 year age gap.

I have a much younger cousin who's been dating his wife since they were both 16. They went to different colleges but not too far away so they tried to stick it out long distance. Halfway through college, they decided that if they were still together after college they'd get married. They were so they did. They've been married 2-3 years now.

Why shouldn't they have had the liberty to get married when they were both 16 or 17 if they felt like it? My question has nothing to do with whether or not that would have been a good idea, but rather whether or not they ought to have had the liberty to make their own choice about it. As a point of comparison, 16yos are whole-ass adults in Scotland. They can get married, sign a lease, any other contract, cast a vote, etc.

I think a lot of the conversation that's completely ignored or perhaps just not even thought of for most people is what minors lose when we take liberty away from them wholesale in the name of protecting them.

Other I like answering the door for solicitors

I don't live an interesting life, which means I get bored easily. If I hear a knock on the door and see through the window that it's a solicitor, it's a perfect opportunity to fuck with people for the sake of my own personal amusement. If it's a door to door salesman, I'll immediately start preaching the words of Jesus Christ followed by saying something insane. If it's a religious group trying to convert me, I'll say some of the most antagonistic things I can think of in the moment.

Technology I don't mind AI content

I am fine with ai generated media as long as its labeled as being ai. I read a lot and I can't always afford to buy more books. I use Kindle unlimited and there are a lot of ai generated books on there. I'm fine with that until they slap a fake name and about the author on it. Then they're just lying

TV/Movies/Fiction Good books should never be adapted to screen. The only books that should be adapted to movies/TV are mediocre ones.

I started the East of Eden series recently, which tries to stay faithful to the source material (at least the first episode). The whole time, I was thinking “Just read the book! It’s this, but better!” On the other end of the spectrum is the recent Wuthering Heights, a beloved book where “creative liberties” were taken in the adaptation, which was universally panned.

There really is no right way to adapt a good book in a satisfying way. You inevitably lose what made it a good book in the first place. Even a quality adaptation will just be a pale copy of the book itself.

On the other hand, there have been movie adaptations that exceeded the book. In my opinion, Fight Club and The Shining have adaptations that improve on the source material and create iconic movies. Why? Because they’re mediocre books.

Mediocre often explore interesting ideas with lackluster execution. Adaptation gives a new life to these ideas from someone with a fresh perspective.

Society/Culture Every place where people eat should have an easily accessible sink for washing hands

I think every place where people regularly eat should have a conveniently accessible sink with soap and running water, in addition to the bathroom.

I find it bizarre how much society relies on napkins as the default solution for dirty hands. If you eat something oily, sticky, saucy, or crumbly, a napkin can remove some of the mess, but it isn’t the same as washing your hands. And there are some types of residues that napkins simply can’t remove/dissolve. Sometimes wiping your hands just feels like moving the residue around rather than actually getting rid of it.

Yet eating areas frequently have no sinks nearby. If you want to wash your hands after eating, you may have to walk to a bathroom, go through a crowded public space, or go searching for a sink somewhere else in the building. This makes proper handwashing unnecessarily inconvenient and makes people who prefer to wash their hands seem unusually particular, when the infrastructure itself could simply make handwashing easier.

For example, at my office, to wash my hands after lunch, I have to leave my backpack at the table, dispose of my dishes, navigate to a bathroom, wash my hands, get an extra paper towel to open the door, throw it away, and walk back to get my backpack. All of this could be simplified by having an accessible handwashing sink near the cafeteria 🤦‍♀️

Imagine a food court, office cafeteria, park picnic area, or communal dining space with a small handwashing station nearby. Why isn’t this a more common design choice 😭

Society/Culture Single ply toilet paper is way better than the ultra soft multi ply ones

I can afford any kind of toilet paper I want and I would still buy cheap Scotts single ply toilet paper over any ultra soft one. First of all, I can use so much of the stuff, totally protect my hand in it, and still hardly make a dent in the roll. The rolls last forever. I also like to wet the paper before I wipe and it holds up way better to that than the soft ones do, which like totally disintegrate in your hand when you do that and increases the danger level of the wipe. It also leaves behind way less stragglies than the soft TP does. On top of all that it's not a pain trying to flush them if you end up using too much. They flush down every time even if you fill the bowl with the stuff.

Gaming I Don’t Like Nintendo Games.

Now, to be fair, I did grow up playing their consoles, but I never really experienced much of their library beyond Mario Kart and Galaxy which are both fantastic games in their own right. But once I got my Switch, I figured that it was time that I dip my little tootsies into their catalog. So, I splurged on a bunch of Nintendo exclusives both new and old figuring that maybe I had been missing out on some incredible experiences. I tried everything from Zelda to Kirby, Mario, along with a little bit of Pokémon and Luigi’s Mansion. Unfortunately, despite my best efforts, I just couldn’t get invested in any of them.

I don’t necessarily hate these games, nor do I think they’re bad. I can understand why people love them, and I can appreciate the amount of creativity and polish that goes into many of Nintendo’s releases. However, I personally find a lot of Nintendo’s games to be rather overhyped. Despite all the praise they receive, I often find myself wondering what everyone else sees in them.

The biggest problem is that I just don’t find them particularly engaging to play. I can recognize that a game is well-designed without actually enjoying my time with it, and that’s pretty much how I feel about most of Nintendo’s library. There’s nothing inherently wrong with these experiences, but they rarely give me a reason to keep coming back.

This is also why I haven’t bothered picking up a Switch 2 yet. Some of the games on there look cool but I don’t think I can personally justify purchasing one knowing that I probably won’t like the games on there either.

Ultimately, as much as I would love to see what other people see in these games, I think Nintendo just isn’t for me. I’m not going to pretend that their games are terrible, they just don’t seem to appeal to me. And that’s totally fine. I’d rather spend my money on games I’m genuinely excited to play than force myself to enjoy something simply because it’s considered a masterpiece by everyone else. Nintendo has plenty of fans who will happily buy whatever they release, and more power to them. I’ll just be over here playing something else.

Society/Culture I want to feel like I'm on Vacation.. while taking a Vacation

I don't know how it started.. but everybody I know in my 20s and 30s love to travel on a budget, take uncomfortable modes of transport, sleep as little as possible, or worse sleep only during journey in car/bus where it is difficult to get a good sleep longer than 1-2 hours.. then they want to go to all the famous spots within 2-3 days of weekends.. sleep late to have fun as a group and then wake up early next day to visit another spot..

I'd rather do 2 relaxing vacations in a year, where I spend a week or 2 in some stunningly beautiful place.. do everything at normal place, get tons of sleep, and if increasing budget a bit gets me comfort then so be it..

Why must vacation be a chore to get through, instead of actually relaxing and then getting back to your hometown feeling refreshed?

Society/Culture I understand the motive of school shooters

They think that they are going to make the people that wronged them or neglected them, feel guilty like they indirectly caused what happened. Look at the Facebook live killer, he would make his victims say the name of his ex-girlfriend right before he killed them to try to make her feel like she was responsible for it. This is mostly delusional thinking but to be honest, sometimes it works. I know I feel guilt for not reaching out to some of the friends that I knew that killed themselves.

TV/Movies/Fiction Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood is the single most overrated anime of all time

HOW does this get hyped as one of the GOATs of all anime?! I don't understand!

It's a good show and well-done battle shounen, but that's all it is. I would've hated anime if this was representative of all anime. People are free to like it because art is subjective, but I hate that it always gets named as the perfect starter anime when it fucking SUCKS as a starter anime.

It's great as a starter anime if you know the audience member likes action and battle shounen. Otherwise, it's so mid.

FMAB is an anime that plays it safe and pulls its punches at all costs. The start of the original 2003 series, at least the start, does a far better job at connecting you to the characters and focusing on their psyches and the philosophical and psychological ramifications of the dark themes the story explores. It's not as manga-accurate as FMAB, but it does so much of a better job of making your care about the characters.

FMAB, like I said, is a well-done battle shounen, but that's what it specializes in. It's all about the action and the optimism and the power of brotherhood and friendship. It doesn't care to dive deep into the dark subject matter it explores. War, genocide, human rights violations, etc. are all major themes and concepts in the series, but FMAB loves to wrap things up nicely with a bow and cut to the action and then the comedy.

I vastly respect anime and all works of fiction that incorporate a vast range of genres and emotions. I like when things oscillate between light and dark. Sometimes a story calls for fucked up and depressing, other times it calls for fun and light-hearted. I like when a work can do both. FMAB is not one of those works. The show and manga (FMAB is more accurate to the manga than the original 2003 manga interpretation, which deviates in plot) largely wants to keep an optimistic, happy-go-lucky fun action story going. That's great, except you can't possibly tackle the dark subjects like genocide and do it justice while forcing everything to remain light-hearted. It just does a disservice to the work and all the ideas!

Take the very infamous Shou Tucker arc. Shou and his daughter Nina only are featured in a single, rushed episode in FMAB, but in FMA, they're featured in 2 and integrated into the main story before their arc is concluded. In FMA, you're given the time to bond with them and care about them, especially Nina, as Ed takes the exam, before all hell breaks loose. FMAB rushes through this then forgets about it, then gets praised for being so deep and impactful when it skips over all the good storytelling and psychological depth in favor of forgettable boring shounen action.

People are free to like FMAB, as all art is subjective. It just kind of annoys me that this basic battle shounen gets exalted as one of the anime greats and "gateway anime" when it's so far from that. There are so so so many more impactful, deeper anime, and also so many more entertaining, happy fun anime. FMAB is in a sour spot and bored the hell out of me. It was one of the first anime I ever watched and it was so forgettable, yet it's constantly being recommended to those interested in anime. If it was the first anime I watched and advertised as representative of the medium, I would've thought the medium was shallow and only cared about action. The contrast is even starker considering that its 2003 precessor was infinitely more interesting!

EDIT: Sorry that was a drunk rant^ lol but I do largely mean it

Society/Culture I liked the strong smell of Abercrombie stores growing up

I wasn’t allowed to shop there for both money and sexual advertisement reasons, and the smell and dark environment made it feel cool and forbidden yet aspirational. I loved that going in there was a whole experience that smacked you in the face, lol. I still associate that smell with “2000s unattainable cool girl” vibes…

Society/Culture Wishing Happy Birthday Online for Pets/Elders/Babies doesn't Make Sense

I get slightly annoyed when I'm looking through people's stories and see someone celebrating the birthday of a member of their family. Except the member of this family cannot fathom or understand social media, nor do I imagine they would care about it.

I can't imagine your pet or baby or infant would understand why you are posting them or sharing it online. And I don't think that your senior grandma would care if you wished her a happy birthday on social media.

None of them can see it on that platform. What's the point? I also think posting anyone (excluding pets) without their consent on your story is weird, even if it's for a birthday. I don't think we should be posting pictures of babies or seniors on the internet in general.

Food (Only on Friday) You don't need salt or other type of condiment for EVERY single one of your meals

Sure, stuff is great for variety and no wonder kings fought for that, but plain food also tastes good and a lot of the time I prefer that. A plate of plain boiled macaroni or just white rice with unseasoned chicken also tastes really well.

Of course there are dishes where condiments are an important ingredient (like baking, i'm pretty sure salt and sugar do material engineering there), but I'm not referring to those.
