Regarding "unhinged" or "extreme" weight loss tips

Hey everyone,

We've noticed a recent uptick in posts asking for "unhinged" or "extreme" weight loss advice. This subreddit exists as a space for healthy, sustainable weight loss discussions. Requests for "unhinged" advice clearly violate Rule 4 and undermine the purpose of our community.

We're fortunate to have a community that usually self-regulates these posts, and the majority of top responses tend to correct this mindset. As moderators, we prefer community-driven education rather than outright removal of posts. Unfortunately, there will always be a few bad actors willing to provide harmful advice in these threads.

Moving forward:

  • Posts requesting "unhinged" or extreme advice will no longer be tolerated. These posts will be removed and you risk being banned from the subreddit.
  • If you see a post like this, continue to educate and correct when appropriate, but also report the post so moderators can quickly handle it.
  • Anyone replying to these posts with actual "unhinged" or extreme advice, even as a "joke," will receive a permanent ban.

Advice: Seeking ❓ I've officially gotten to the "don't lose anymore weight" faze, do i listen?

Around a year ago i started the process of losing weight(don't like the word 'journey', sounds pretentious to me lol) and i've mostly kept to myself about it with only my parents being closer to the whole thing. Recently we had a baby in the family, a beautiful baby girl, so naturally i had to be around family more and a lot of people saw me for the first time, got a lot of positive feedback and them telling me how good i looked, you know, the usual stuff after you lose some weight. Yesterday i went to see the baby and the conversation found itself to target weight talk and i said "idk, 80kg maybe..." and people lost their mind lmao. Now, I've ALWAYS been fat, literally my entire life, it got really bad at the end and now I'm at a point where at least there are some clothes that ACTUALLY look good on me(not that it's important, just as a measurement of progress).

I started at 140kg, i'm at 92kg now at 1.7m tall. I do feel better, i look better i think, and honestly it has crossed my mind on my own to stop right here but i feel like 80 would be the sweet spot for me, to the detriment of my grandma? What did you do?

Advice: Seeking ❓ I have a fear of "overdoing exercise"... is it overthinking or valid

• Upvotes

Even if it's not rational and I know I'm not overdoing it I always feel cautious and try not to go at my full potential for fear of "doing too much to my body". How do I know if I'm actually overdoing it or if it's just my mind trying to scare me?

Discussion/Support 💬 struggling to keep the flow going

• Upvotes

I have lost nearly 20kg since April. I’m currently 107kg (Male, 5’9)

I’ve completely transformed my habits and relationship with food. I still exercise everyday and eat healthy, but it almost feels like this is my genetic limit or something . I’ve just been hovering around maintenance naturally for the past month, every day/week I try to eat in a deficit, my body doesn’t seem to be having it. I know I gotta just keep pushing though

Advice: Seeking ❓ Losing/gaining the same 1-4lbs. I want to lose more for Halloween but not sure if my body is in need of a break

• Upvotes

I’m 23 years old F 5’1 and have been in a calorie deficit for 7 months so far and have lost a total of 90lbs my starting weight was 200lbs and now I’m 110lbs but it’s been fluctuating between the same 1-4lbs and I can’t seem to keep it off or lose much more. So at the moment I’m 111lbs but it normally goes back to 110lbs but then goes up again.

I have been taking maintenance breaks sometimes between the 7 months on my diet but I really would rather not do that right now as Halloween is around the corner and I don’t want to risk losing out on further progress but I have been constantly stressed about the scale, calorie counting, very intense food cravings, weakness and constantly cold.

On the other hand, you can experience period symptoms 2 weeks or so before the actual bleeding starts so I’m not fully sure whether it’s just been period related symptoms as I am currently on my period right now or my body signalling me to ease off on the deficit for now.
What do you think it sounds like? Should I continue with my deficit or keep going?

Advice: Seeking ❓ Advice for someone in my situation (binge eating, diet procrastination, severe emotional eating)?

I am 25F, weigh about 80kg for 1m73/74 or 170lbs for 5'8, bmi 26-27. I used to weigh 98kg/210lbs (bmi 30) at my hw 7 years ago, got to a healthy bmi 6 years ago in 8 months with just cico and meal habit changes, zero exercise. My adult lw was 60kg/135lbs (bmi 19/20) 5 years ago. Been ever since regaining very slowly. Only been overweight for about a year 1/2, and gained 5kg in only a couple months.

Before saying anything, don't give me a bunch general weightloss advice, know it all already, that's not the problem for me. I'm looking for hacks, tips, and stuff like that to fix my specific barriers to weightloss.

I struggle a lot with procrastination related to weightloss, and for the last 5 years, it's always been "one more day of eating what I want, tomorrow I'll go on a diet". Result is, nothing has moved except on a couple short occasions, but I always fuck up in the same way. I don't know how to control my desire to overreat or binge anymore, it's a willpower thing I'm sure (I do really want to lose weight, but I'm always like I want this now, I'll start tomorrow. That's where it originates).

I'm also in a pretty bad situation where I live in a very rural area without my own car, there's no one really my age, and I lost touch with all my old friends over the years. There's not much to do around here outside of my house, or people for me to talk to, so i really just have the internet to entertain myself. I spend like 16h a day online. This is a big factor in my second problem that's keeping me from losing weight. I came to associate eating (mostly certain types of foods) and having a little drink next to me at all times (especially caffeinated) with cozyness, happiness, entertainement, productivity, comfort, etc. In a way they rule my life. They are what I look forward to during the day and what is available dictates my mood and if a day is a good one or not. I get my food delivered once a week, 85% isn't junk food and leans more healthy in a way, for my own conscience. Often the junk is diet cookies or a veggie pizza, to feel less bad eating them. The junk is what I look forward to impatiently, along with energy drinks, coffees & beers, and some 'healthy' stuff like cheese, grapes, berries. If some items go out of stock before delivery, I get agitated and sometimes get very dark thoughts (because it's what I depend on to get through life, it's like the drop that makes the vase overflow in a way). When I finish the fun items, which I usually binge in the first 2-3 days, and just have the actual super healthy foods left I feel empty and like the days ahead will be grey until the delivery day. It's crazy how food & drinks dictate my life.

Also for my eating habits, I never eat just by itself. I'd find that terribly boring and wouldn't want to eat (and no I can't bring myself to try to eat like that in general). Eating is an accessory to my computer, mostly films/youtube/series. I don't enjoy eating much actually either anymore, I can't help but eat very fast, and I never eat out of hunger. But somehow my brain stills thinks of the pleasure it gave me before, and forces me to try to recreate it without success.

I am in this mess as well because for the longest time my weigh didn't budge when eating ungodly amounts of food for months. When it did budge it was slight, and so I grew complacent overtime and got used to eating without restraint. That started 4 years ago.

The only diets I managed to do since I got to my adult lw, was a week of full fasting where I was too faint to leave my bed at 22 and a two months long one last year, where I did have a healthy deficit eating only non processed sugar free whole foods cooked from scratch, that worked effortlessly where I felt so so happy and energized, and lost 4-5kg. My dad ruined it by making me eat his high calorie food during a trip and I felt like I spoiled my progress because of the math, so I gave up and fell back into my old pattern. I did de-program the sad feeling without junk food, but now I can't manage to do that anymore because I'd feel like I have nothing to look forward to in life, and will be miserable. I feel like the sweet tooth is getting worse and the irrational sadness as well.

I also struggle with perfectionism, which is part of why it's so hard for me to start a diet and to stay on track. Like I can't be in just 200 cals below maintenance, I need more. If I eat my tdee, or slightly above, I failed, so binge and start tomorrow.

I want to deprogram my mind to be a slave to food & drinks, want to get my self control back, stop procrastination with weightloss, and I want a very healthy unprocessed diet. I want to get to 57-59kg/130lbs (bmi 19) as my gw ideally, but at min 65kg/140lbs (bmi 21). I really hate my body bmi 23+, 22 is meh. Aesthetics are my primary motivator, but also getting that sense of default contentment in life and energy, lightness, etc.

Progress 📈 Playing the long game

I’m posting to say how far I’ve come as I can’t believe I’ve got this.

Around May my health declined and I realised I hadn’t weighed myself in nearly ten years. I’m a 5 foot female and found myself being nearly 110kg. With a change in mind set, diet (two full meals and a small lunch for work), exercise three times a week (at the gym or at home if I couldn’t make it out), keeping my steps above 10000 five days a week and calorie counting, I’ve got down to 85kg. Still a bit to go as I want to get to around 70kg, which is the higher end of my normal bmi range, but this is the lightest I’ve been in years.

The question I want to know is what helped you out when trying to maintain the progress? I’m getting the usual days where I think I want to just be lazy but am fighting them. What’s helped you guys in this situation?

Advice: Seeking ❓ Is having any kind of sandwhich bread really that bad?

Is bread really that bad? Wheat, ,, and buttermilk white bread are the same calories from my store. 70. I like both and use both for different sandwiches or even to make garlic bread from the white kind.

I dont know how much I should care about macros, I'm on a severe calorie deficit.

But is it okay to have a decent sandwhich every other day?

I make all kinds. Most days I only hit 1200 calories as a 6'3" man that works construction. I try to stay heavy on protein for faster recovery on those harder days.

Advice: Seeking ❓ Weight Loss Feels Rather Defeating

So for two months I was training for a 45 bicycle ride I did earlier this month, for my birthday (did that 45 in 4.5 hours with 36 hours awake, about 15 more miles throughout that day, and 6 miles of hiking) pretty much all of it was cycling in larger increments going as high as 15 miles a night.

Had a doctor's appointment the next day and I wasn't expecting a huge weight loss, but to find out that my weight hadn't moved at all was rather disheartening.

I used to be near 400lbs, but through my job and some better eating habits I got down to ~285 and that's basically where I've been the last few years.

The whole idea of continuing to workout just doesn't thrill me. I don't get that work out high, spent about an hour of cycling right after work, stayed away from sugar as much as I could, ate slightly better, and nothin'. I know I trimmed down slightly, visually, but there's no way any muscle gain cancelled out any fat loss.

Those nights cycling at midnight with next to no traffic wasn't thrilling, the wind always sucks cause I'm about as aerodynamic as a brick, the constant soreness was a pain, and chugging more water than normal was annoying in its own way.

I've been thinking of getting a stationary bike for the fall/winter, but it feels I'm wasting time. Not strictly due to the lack of weight loss, but because it's just boring. I don't ever expect to go below 250, but even that feels like such a ways off if 2 months can't make me lose a few pounds.

Advice: Seeking ❓ Help with workout routine

Hello, to keep this short, I’m a m(21), around 5’11 about 300lbs. I’d like to drop to at most 240-250, but I’d love to go down even further. I have quite a difficult schedule to work around, but I can find time to put the effort in. I’m just looking for a workout routine and maybe even a diet that’s easy to keep up with. Any tips are much appreciated!!

Advice: Seeking ❓ Short Girl Weight Loss Help!!

I am looking for some tips/advice/anything to help me lose body fat.

I am a 27 y/o female, 5’0”, 153 lbs. I have a short upper body and the fat holds in my belly and arms.

I have tried everything under the sun - eating cleaner, calorie deficit, intermittent fasting, cutting sugar, and I’m sure I’m missing some. I go to the gym 3-5 days a week working in strength training and cardio.

What else can I do that isn’t any weight loss drug related? I studied nutrition in college and my major was health science. I have even STUDIED the body and how it works and have tried to do everything that I’ve learned. I’m desperate at this point. I just want to feel healthy and good in my body, along with looking my best. My end goal is to gain muscle mass and lose the fat. I don’t want to just be thin, I want to be strong.

Any advice is appreciated, even if it’s absolutely bonkers :)

Advice: Seeking ❓ Body Changes

I (f25) am 5'9. I was diagnosed with cancer 6 years ago, went through chemo, was in remission, re diagnosed, went through chemo, was in remission, got rediagnosed, got married, went through chemo again, and am now in remission again. My body has gone through more changes than I can count, including removal of an ovary, appendix, removal of abdominal tissue (like 6-pack muscle) and addition of biological mesh.

After the second diagnosis and chemo, I worked out to regain muscle mass and strength, and eventually weighed 155-160 lbs, and I felt so good in my own skin.

But after the third diagnosis, getting married and chemo, I gained 20 lbs within a month. I didn't usually keep up with my weight but when I go in for doctor's visits I can't help but notice changes. And most recently I was at 195.

I don't know where to start. I don't know if I'm just eating more, or if it's a soda intake thing, or if it's my depression meds (Lexapro and Aripiprazol). But I feel so heavy and sad about the way I look rn and idk what to do.

TLDR: help with deciding what caused weight gain--antidepressants, eating habits, soda, or something more?

Any help would be great.

Discussion/Support 💬 I'm tired of trying I just want results

I'm almost 300 pounds and wanted to try and change i've spent 6 months at the gym this year, ate healthy, counted calories and fasted and got no results besides losing maybe 15 pounds and just small pathetic triceps. I ended up getting a new job that works nightshifts and I spend most of my days sleeping now and only using basic equipment at home. I'm exhausted from not seeing results or change I'm desperate for anything that can make me drop and lose weight as fast as possible.

Advice: Seeking ❓ Why does no one talk about the fatigue and constant pain?

Every time I have pursued a caloric cut of any kind, I find myself in horrible fatigue. I do nothing drastic. Today I had steak, potatoes, and vegetables for lunch with a side of berries. For dinner I had chicken and a spinach salad. I feel like I could vomit from my hunger.

My body is tense, I have headaches, and I begin seeing flashes of memory before my eyes. I have always suffered from mild anxiety, and I have only known my body to be burning fat when I need to increase my antidepressant dosage. At my thinnest, which was still technically an overweight BMI, I began dissociating.

I don't know how many other people experience intense pleasure in eating. Every time I am full of carbohydrates, I feel a profound wave of relaxation through my entire body. I feel my shoulders loosen and my legs lighten. I feel for a moment an ocean of beauty and calm. When I am pursuing weight loss deliberately, it never comes. I feel rigid and tight, everything edgy. Protracted cortisol spikes, perhaps? I can't stand it.

I feel myself in a constant state of lack, even with every "hack" at my disposal. Exercise is nothing but pain—no high, no pleasure, just a miserable getting on because it is "right" to do.

Perhaps this is my body's expurgation of its familiarity with fat. I don't know.

How do you stand it?

Discussion/Support 💬 Downsides of running more when eating a lot?

So I am on a calorie deficit and most days I am following it but sometimes I have a party or I just eat a lot of food so I run extra hours to burn the calories off. Does this actually work because I hear people say you can't outrun a bad diet but I don't eat like this every day either

Advice: Seeking ❓ Can I lose “skinnyfat” without strength training

When I was younger I was overweight and because of bullying I was desperate to become skinny, I lost a lot of weight in a short amount of time by significantly cutting down my calories. But even if my overall structure became slim, I still had a lot of body fat (in areas like under arms, stomach and thighs)

It’s been over 10 years and I’m still like that and to be honest I just want to get fit. I did some research a few months ago and I learned that it’s called skinny fat(?) and it’s because I didn’t do a body recomposition. But that involves strength training which I cannot do so I want wondering if people have advice on other ways I can help with this?

Over the past few months I’ve been eating better but still, just those pockets of fat in those areas won’t go away and it’s really frustrating.

For exercise I go on a 3-4km jog around my neighbourhood a few times a week and during work (5x a week) I average about 25k steps. I’m also an equestrian and ride about 2 hours a week on my days off

Advice: Seeking ❓ Advice needed!

I am a F 161cm and 52kg, my stomach is mostly flat however, I have a small bump towards my lower abdomen.
I've seen several videos online of people lacking that/having a completely flat stomach.

How would I go about getting rid of that? I've been to the gym for a couple months and it seems that's an incredibly stubborn bit.
Does anyone have any diets or anything they've used that's helped with the same issue or something similar?

Thanks!

Discussion/Support 💬 Putting serious effort in

Hi all! Im 34f, I have type 2 and pmos - weigh 252 at 5'6 and I've lost a total of 65lbs over the last 5 years. Very slowly, but have kept it off. I want to try and lose another 25lbs before the end of the year (i know that isnt much time, but i want to push myself) my ultimate goal is to get to 200/190. Currently im trying to stay away from High sugar and carbs, and I take a walk 3 to 5 times a week. Are there any exercises I can start incorporating to help remove more of my mid section and strengthen it?

I think im apple shaped, if that helps.

Id like to ideally start slower and build into it.

Appreciate any advice:]

Advice: Seeking ❓ How to cancel out food noise?

Hey so I’m a 22yo male at a healthy body weight but I do have some belly fat I wanna get rid off. I love eating healthy, I have no problem with it, the issue is with the amount I eat. All day I’m just thinking about food. In August just before my holiday I did get leaner and felt really good about myself but I did that through fasting which I didn’t really enjoy, I ended up gaining all the weight back after the holiday.
