Meta PSA: The "What, and "Why" of Context

It's that time of year again!

Despite the several automated and signposted notices and warnings on this issue, it is a constant source of headaches for the mod team. Particularly considering our massive growth this past year, we thought it was about time for another reminder about everyone's favorite part of posting on /r/worldbuilding..... Context

Context is a requirement for almost all non-prompt posts on r/worldbuilding, so it's an important thing to understand... But what is it?

What is context?

Context is information that explains what your post is about, and how it fits into the rest of your/a worldbuilding project.

If your post is about a creature in your world, for example, that might mean telling us about the environment in which it lives, and how it overcomes its challenges. That might mean telling us about how it's been domesticated and what the creature is used for, along with how it fits into the society of the people who use it. That might mean telling us about other creatures or plants that it eats, and why that matters. All of these things give us some information about the creature and how it fits into your world.

Your post may be about a creature, but it may be about a character, a location, an event, an object, or any number of other things. Regardless of what it's about, the basic requirement for context is the same:

  • Tell us about it
  • Tell us something that explains its place within your world.

In general, telling us the Who, What, When, Why, and How of the subject of your post is a good way to meet our requirements.

That said... Think about what you're posting and if you're actually doing these things. Telling us that Jerry killed Fred a century ago doesn't do these things, it gives us two proper nouns, a verb, and an arbitrary length of time. Telling us who Jerry and Fred actually are, why one killed the other, how it was done and why that matters (if it does), and the consequences of that action on the world almost certainly does meet these requirements.

For something like a resource, context is still a requirement and the basic idea remains the same; Tell us what we're looking at and how it's relevant to worldbuilding. "I found this inspirational", is not adequate context, but, "This article talks about the history of several real-world religions, and I think that some events in their past are interesting examples of how fictional belief systems could develop, too." probably is.

If you're still unsure, feel free to send us a modmail about it. Send us a copy of what you'd like to post, and we can let you know if it's okay, or why it's not.

Why is Context Required?

Context is required for several reasons, both for your sake and ours.

  • Context provides some basic information to an audience, so they can understand what you're talking about and how it fits into your world. As a result, if your post interests them they can ask substantive questions instead of having to ask about basic concepts first.

  • If you have a question or would like input, context gives people enough information to understand your goals and vision for your world (or at least an element of it), and provide more useful feedback.

  • On our end, a major purpose is to establish that your post is on-topic. A picture that you've created might be very nice, but unless you can tell us what it is and how it fits into your world, it's just a picture. A character could be very important to your world, but if all you give us is their name and favourite foods then you're not giving us your worldbuilding, you're giving us your character.

Generally, we allow 15 minutes for context to be added to a post on r/worldbuilding so you may want to write it up beforehand. In some cases-- Primarily for newer users-- We may offer reminders and additional time, but this is typically a one-time thing.

As always, if you've got any sort of questions or comments on this topic, feel free to leave them here!

Visual Ordinary day in Ragbone

Post image
345 Upvotes

Hey! I've been working on and collecting ideas for something that's been living in my head for quite a while now.

It's a project about a city called Ragbone — a place that finds a use for everything other cities throw away. And I mean everything: discarded materials, unwanted ideas, strange inventions, and even some rather questionable creatures.

This is a little glimpse of everyday life there. In Ragbone, venom harvesting is just one of many perfectly normal trades.

Wild caterpillars in this world had small, retractable venom glands on the undersides of their bodies. When attacked, the glands released an irritating substance that could even paralyze some predators. Over generations, goblins (because Ragbone is mostly a goblin city} selectively bred caterpillars that produced the most venom, until their glands turned into large, soft sacs resembling udders. The caterpillars can still partially retract these sacs while moving, and breeders are able to collect this valuable substance without killing the fuzzy-headed caterpillars.

I'm still developing the world and illustrating its many oddities, and I thought I'd start sharing some of them here.

The texts are in Polish: Harvesting venom, do not startle, be careful and A Class - very itchy.

Hope you like it!

Visual Vítrí, star of strife

In Noctism, each of the 8 Cardinals are believed to be incarnations of the 8 realms, embodying their characteristics and traits. Vítrí's domains are that of strife, rust and degradation.

When one has a disagreement in their life they Face Vítrí in the night sky and pray. he is thought to be a mediator in any conflict. Noctists think of the rust of iron as the natural consequence of violence. Your soul can "rust" if you're a needlessly disagreeable or violent person. Vítrí's role is to bear this weight, hence it's red hue.

----

Vítrí's Incarnation is a human. He's a younger Cardinal, only 120. Like the others his origins are kept secretive, alongside the methods that gift him his stature and prolonged senescence. He is a pragmatic man who generally avoids public appearances, but of his sparse sermons those present describe his voice to have a whisper like quality, It's soft but still has presence.

In spite of his mellow demeanor, he is still a Cardinal. He's shorter than most of the others, standing at 14ft (4.2m). The red paint that anoints his boy is used to symbolise rust and the toll he takes in his leadership of the nation. The Cardinals are very careful in their presentation, ensuring their faces are always properly obscured through use of wrappings and veils.

---

Vítrí as a Realm is a frigid one, It's dead landscapes spur to life in seasonal periods of activity. Mile high storms of volcanic soot and ash thunder across it's surface. Rust, iron and shards slashing anything caught in their wake.

The realm has been subject many Expeditions, journeys to it's great northern ocean yield vitriol, a potent acid with many applications back on earth.

---

Meta: The realm is based of prehistoric mars, the hemispherical ocean and ring that formed form one of it's moons spiraling inwards. Also much more volcanically active. A lot of the realms are based directly off the IRL planets, though some diverge more than others.

His eyes make him look high as a the planet he embodies, but I like them too much to change. When I get around to designing the other cardinals his red sclera's won't stick out so much. The actual page design is a little shoddy too lol, the text is too low. Still, much happier with the hindu inspirations over the Catholic ones, all that remains is his cappello romano, that plus the title of "cardinal".

On a side note excuse my prose, I don't write, and I'm trying to get better.

Welcome to SebWithAura's World, my world! It's a 3D world simulation I built with the same dynamics as Earth, and I factor in probabilities like aerodynamics, cause and effect, climate, weather, and other stuff, and then I create natural disasters, weather, and other events and test those events on my population

I've simulated hurricanes, cyclones, thunderstorms, tornadoes, volcanoes, tsunamis, earthquakes, etc.

My Discord is sebwithaura is anyone has questions, and if you are interesting in seeing photos, current storms like the hurricane in the second photo, forecasts, archives, and records, or want to join the simulation, my website is here: https://sebwithaurasworld.vercel.app

This is the city ive been working on building for the last year and a half i think (the walls are under renovations) and i need a better name for it i think. It was originally called redwood retreat, then solendor and now i want something that really feels like it fits the vibe, i dont know. I also want to name the continent so rhe world itself can have a better name than "forever world" but i havent come up with anything yet. If it helps, the city's main export is pumpkins, pumpkin pie things like that its not really a military city

Discussion my world has better infrastructure than the country "I" live in

• Upvotes

my fantasy civilization has a functioning postal system, reliable road maintenance, a legal framework that actually makes sense given the culture, and an economic policy that follows logically from the available resources

I live in a real country. I will not elaborate.

and i spent three years making sure my fictional government was internally consistent and competent (the bar I was trying to clear was apparently very low).

This little guy is called a Sand Pip (Also known as Ammocryptus absconditus, which means Hidden Sand-Hider) They are bipedal reptiles originating from the planet Velaria, a desert planet. Sand Pips are herbivorous, feeding on shrubs, sap, and fruits! Unlike most of the creatures of Velaria, they only have two legs. They simply evolved to not need them.

Prompt Every morning, someone dies.

Post image
• Upvotes

So I have this introduction to a world a creating, where the magic system is based on truth and lies. Tell me what are your thoughts about it, any changes you’ll made, or any plot hole you see.

Counterfeit Dawn

Do you remember last night?
You went to bed, closed your eyes, and sooner or later you felt asleep. You probably dreamed
something, and if you actually did, you’ve surely forgotten it by now. But let me ask you this: Are you
really sure that whoever opened their eyes this morning is still you?

After all, no one truly remembers how a dream begins.

Every night, while you dream, something happens. No one knows exactly what it is but it always ends
up the same. Someone else wakes up in your bed: someone with your face, your memories, your
personality and absolute confidence that they are you.
An almost one to one copy of you who will carry on with your life, laugh for you, cry for you, and talk
about your experiences as if they actually lived them. The thought that they replaced someone else
won’t even cross their mind.

But as I said, a copy that is “almost” perfect.

The replacement process is not perfect. Small errors slips from night to night, and as time goes by,
they accumulate. A trivial memory that disappears, a conversation that seems completely different or
even life changing events totally forgotten.
Nobody knows exactly what you’ll lose, there’s no way to know. If you don’t remember something,
how would you realize you have forgotten it?
Despite all of this, there’s something that sets these copies apart of who they think they are: They
don’t dream. And in this world, that changes everything.

Dreams are the frontier between reality and falsehood, the place where what’s not true can be.
Where lies can become big enough to change the world as we know. The copies, having never
experienced it, can not lie.

You know, they clearly retain the imagination of those who they replaced, even make up fictional
stories or tell jokes. What they truly can’t do is to pass off someone they know to be false as truth.
Something physical doesn’t allow them.

But not lying doesn’t mean they always tell the truth either.
Their memories are incomplete, errors accumulated copy after copy. They don’t lie, they simply make
mistakes.

Now, in your case. You claim you’re wanted for murder, a crime you swear you didn’t commit.
You remember going to bed, closing your eyes and falling asleep. You didn’t even leave your room. I
mean, that’s how this conversation began.
So let me assure you my friend, I believe you. You are not lying…

You are simply making a mistake.

Power System

As a result of the dreaming phenomenon, absolute truths and intentional lies are incredibly rare in this world. Those who control these concepts can shape reality in different ways.

This creates a power system with two polar opposites born from the same phenomenon.

(Both this users are not intended has the good or the bad guys they are just results of the world, both sides don’t necessarily need to be in conflict)

Dreamers:

The exception. Rare copies that somehow break free from the replacement process and now are able to dream freely, therefore gaining the ability to lie at will.
They manifest lies into reality but only when it’s based around a false beliefs shared by a large number of people over long periods. The lies humanity has always dreamed of.
They can interpret the belief as they want but can’t contradict the core of the belief.

Cost: Lies are not free. The more a Dreamer uses their myth, the more they surrender control to the myth itself. When the push to hard they get consumed by the belief, losing themselves inside the lie

Dreamer: Black Cat
The user can project a cat shaped shadow with their hands that inflicts misfortune on everyone covered by it.
As the user manifests the lie more and more, their body starts turning cat like until finally they become into a black cat that gives minor bad luck, losing their consciousness.

Witnesses:

People that for some reason can’t dream, they can’t lie but that also means they are the only ones who have never been replaced. Without distorted memories, only they can claim an absolute truth. Reality rewards the with these abilities:
They can reproduce events that actually happened at will, transferring their properties to other objects, people, or their surroundings. Regardless of how improbable the original events may have been.
To manifest this truths, the user must possess an authentic physical evidence that proves the event truth.

Cost: The more improbable the event is, the greater the consequences. Common truths cost little, almost impossible one can kill the user before even activating.

Witnesses: “The sword that deflected a bullet”
When entering in contact with the evidence, the user can make that a sword (not knife, axe, etc, just swords) can deflect (not destroy or return, just deflect) any bullet (not any type of projectile). Every time they manifest this into a sword (not any time they deflect a bullet), a limb breaks all its bones. This is because it’s an event almost humanly impossible, but not that infinitely physically impossible.

The event must follow the same structure. sword > deflect > bullet. You can’t turn it into “any weapon destroyes any projectile”

The power system is incredibly simplified, each system has a ton of rules and conditions, and are balanced (or at least i think) if anyone is interested on them just let me know.

Lore The precursor race of my new weird steampunk fantasy "les populaires"

Post image

Image credit: philosopher monkey by jj Grandville used for visualization purposes only I do not claim ownership

Note: I was gonna call them the jinn but they kind of turned into their own thing, now I am subverting myself I suppose, and dragons are being reworked at the moment.

The precursors or aïeux (as noted by the orque) are tall primate like humanoids dressed in Victorian lounge wear with reality warping and wish granting abilities they by stubborn ethic do not use or allow anyone to try and harness through any manner, favor, loophole or contract, they also possess a all knowing omniscience which extends to a meta awareness

The aïeux also (given by their name translated to English "forefathers") are the evolutionary precursor to the orque, though technically every orque's stubborn father or mother, the orque being born from a son of a aïeux that went down from their mountain home and forgot their powers and became documenters

They are the oldest race of all of the races I've done a expóse on, they are the very parody and subversion of both the concept of gods in a fantasy realm and Tom bombadil though unlike old tom could care less because he isn't affected by that pesky one ring, the aïeux couldn't care less because they know they could fix everything but don't because to quote one "where's the fun in that?"

In the plot, léon and his troupe find the dwelling cave of the precursors expecting them to just grant a wish to set things back to normal are instead faced with stubborn entities that refuse to even speak with them, knowing exactly what they want and not giving it, and when finally coaxed just end up being insulted by the dry wit of the aïeux

Another thing about them, is that they are very well aware that they are meant to be subversions which is why they are so hammy about their nature being reading the newspaper, lounging, pipe smoking, reading and arguing philosophy about meaningless things, they want to act hammy despite my wishes for them to actually be serious

As per usual I am open to questions, criticism, and feedback

Rest of wojaks were made using photos of animal meat or half life 2 images.

Someone told me this was good enough to post on the main worldbuilding sub so I figured I’d give it a shot and see what you all think of the collages.

Context:

Meatoids (the people of this setting) are stuck in this afterlife of true immortality where their deformed numb skinless bodies are recreated over and over again in a lake of toxic sludge being pulled out and grafted together with metal parts from a factory and sent out into the wastes indebted to the factory

I wanted to explore the way people cope with this impossible situation and try to survive or even change things for the better.

Lore Keisoya: a gas giant with geysers of steam & ice.

Post image
10 Upvotes

(For Th’zoitrk, a semi-sci-fi worldbuilding project.)

Keisoya is the second smallest of the gas giants. It is the 13th planet in the solar system, and the innermost of all the gaseous planets.
It is the only planet other than Th’zoitrk itself which has rings clearly visible from the surface of Th’zoitrk.

From the surface of Th’zoitrk, the majority of the outer worlds in the solar system are practically invisible without a good telescope.
There are only two gas giants visible from the surface of Th’zoitrk with the naked eye. Sh’beso, the largest true planet in the entire solar system, and Keisoya.
Despite Keisoya’s small size (for a gas giant), it is the largest apparent outer world in Th’zoitrk’s night sky simply due to proximity.
Keisoya orbits at 2.8 AU from Okott (the sun), just over half the distance Sh’beso orbits at. Because of this, Keisoya appears just a little over 20% larger then Sh’beso in the night sky.

Keisoya has an equatorial diameter of 79,949km, and sits at roughly 40 earth masses. This makes Keisoya just over half the size of Jupiter, and just under half the mass of Saturn.
Keisoya’s apparent 'surface' gravity at the planet’s upper cloud tops is 1.02 G’s, almost identical to that of earth.

Keisoya is largely composed of similar constituent materials to the worlds Neptune and Uranus in Earth’s solar system, made up of roughly 74% hydrogen, 23% helium, and a remainder 3% largely comprised of methane, ammonia, and water vapor.

With its relatively small size and old age (\~6.2 billion years old, believed to be the first planet to form from the proto-planetary disk), Keisoya has assuredly lost virtually all of its latent heat from its original formation.
However, Keisoya is not a cold and dead world just yet. At 1.05 AU, there’s Donyon, a \~3 earth-mass super-earth terrestrial planet tugging Keisoya inward. At 4.7 AU, Sh’beso’s 148 earth-mass behemoth of a gravity well tugs Keisoya outward.
The tug of war between Donyon and Sh’beso create mild yet noticeable tidal flexing inside Keisoya, keeping the gas giant perpetually heated.

Deep inside Keisoya is a supercritical ocean of liquid methane, ammonia, and water. Tidal flexing heats this supercritical ocean, which wants to evaporate into a gas yet is continuously crushed down and kept compressed as a liquid from the thousands of kilometers of gas above it.
This behaves similarly to volcanos on earth. Pressure slowly builds, and builds, and builds, until the liquids of this supercritical ocean overpower the weight of the gas compressing them from above, and evaporate.

These gases shoot upwards at hundreds to thousands of km/h, eventually reaching the upper cloud tops of Keisoya where they shoot out and flash-freeze into the vacuum of space, forming massive arcs of frozen water, ammonia, and methane ice which eventually rain back down into the planet’s atmosphere or, on occasion, get stuck in orbit around the planet (this is how Keisoya’s rings are formed, from the buildup of geyser ejecta flung into orbit.)

Each geyser arc tends to range from 10,000-30,000 kilometers in height (for reference, planet Earth is 12,756 kilometers across.)
On the night side of Keisoya, the base of these arcs create small lit-up regions as white-hot gases burst through the upper atmosphere before freezing into ice.

Some geysers don’t gather enough energy to fully eject up high over the planet, and remain in the upper atmosphere. Here, these ices form snow clouds which get stretched into long, yellow smudges in the upper atmosphere, pulled and pushed along by Keisoya’s incredibly fast winds, which are capable of reaching speeds as high as Mach 4.2. Firmly placing Keisoya as the world with the fastest wind speeds in the solar system.

Keisoya is the single least studied of all the gas giants. It is the only gas giant to have received a grand total zero dedicated missions sent to it. It has never been visited by any spacecraft; and currently, no nation has any plans to send a mission to Keisoya anytime soon.

Question What’s the race or faction in your world who’s influence is felt not by their presence, but their absence?

Mine is a megacorp called Samuel Family Corporation, or SamCo. SamCo, unlike other megacorps, wasn’t a purely a PMC and arms manufacturer. They were a titan of industrial output and efficient approach to resource extraction. At its peak, SamCo was both a mining conglomerate and a manufacturer of most necessities, allowing themselves the ability to aggressively expand well beyond what we would call reasonable. They would eventually discover a mysterious rift in 2108, which led to a fantasy land known as Aegisiro. This would end up becoming the biggest investment for the company, as Aegisiro was rich in natural resources that were starting to dwindle, such as stone, timber, metals, and oil. Their expansion was incredibly aggressive and efficient as SamCo had arrived in Aegisiro long before any of its corporate rivals, and any attempts for the native tribes and kingdoms to fight back against them were swiftly put down because of how much farther ahead SamCo was in terms of technology. Eventually SamCo would desecrate a shrine belonging to a primordial spirit known as Makthun, which resulted in mana crystals forcing their way from the planet core to the surface. After learning that these crystals were not just energy sources, but also a miracle material that could be shaped any way they wanted, even being able to make real food, SamCo was emboldened from mere resource extraction and discovery to straight up conquest and expansion. Eventually however, many different factors would lead to the downfall of SamCo, such as labor riots, mutiny, and the fact that the native races and kingdoms were both starting to use the mana crystals to supercharge their magic and began utilizing SamCo’s own weapons against them. Eventually the cost to maintain their holdings were too high compared to the projected profits, so the call was made. Cut and Run. SamCo would close the rift that they took to Aegisiro, leaving behind all assets that they brought and leaving all their personnel to die. The last true battle against SamCo took place at the Jackson Industrial complex, and even then many of the soldiers that had fought for SamCo chose to surrender than fight, as they knew they’d been left for dead and acting without orders just wasn’t worth it.

It was a victory for Aegisiro and her people, but the scars SamCo left behind can still be seen. Many soldiers who are still alive can recall the horrors of fighting against such a force, Mana Crystals still can be found almost everywhere. And then there’s the Deadlands, the official name given to the territory SamCo had abandoned. Should you venture there, it want be long until you come across something with a SamCo logo or advertising. They were truly everywhere. Posters, billboards, weapon ads, propaganda, trash cans, mining equipment, guns, uniforms, armor, planes, warships, APCs, mining cities, factories, mech suits, power plants, even entire military complexes hidden in the mountains are still being discovered. Even all these years later where the only residents are hostile wildlife or bandits, everything is still emblazoned with SamCo’s logo. SamCo’s guns, though illegal to own within certain regions, are still highly sought after by mercenary adventurers and nobility, for their ergonomic design and ease of use.

Question Orange Classical Elements?

I’m making an Element System for a card game and I’ve come up with most of the elements
🔴 - Fire
🟠 - ???
🟡 - Aether/Spirit
🟢 - Earth
🔵 - Water
🟣 - Dark/Void
The Elements also fit into my “Counter Wheel.”
Water -> Fire -> Earth -> Aether -> Dark
The problem with my current system is that it’s basically just the Magic: the Gathering Mana Wheel. I want to make it a bit more unique. The new element would have to fit between to elements (able to be countered and counter another element). Any ideas are appreciated!

Discussion The Video Game Deadlock and it's Potential Approach to an Otherworldly Pantheon and How it Inspired Me. [Discussion]

Thumbnail
gallery
1.5k Upvotes

I've always loved the urban settings of Science Fantasy and I'm sure like some people in the community, I've recently became obsessed with the game "Deadlock" and its incredible approach to worldbuilding. For any unfamiliar, the simplified version of the game is, you are participating in a ritual that would allow one of two Patrons to manifest in reality, imposing their societal structure upon an alternate reality New York City; "The Archmother" being law/order with her mask resembling that of the Statue of Liberty, and "The Hidden King" being anarchy/chaos who's shadowy visage, twisted horns, and yellow colouration is uncannily like "The King in Yellow." There are hints at other potential patrons exsisting in whatever other universe these two hail from but thats not what I want to talk about.

Fantasy - primarily its subgenres - always have a way of mingling with urban settings, the three most iconic to me being the city of Sharn in Eberon, Sigl from Planescape, and the ecumenopolis plane of Ravnica from Magic the Gathering, each of these setting having recognisable traits that can be associated with their real world counterpart - sky scrappers, interwoven cultures, magical inventions that are analogous with technology.

So, what if this was the structure for an entire world?

Primarily an ecumenopolis for example, where massive country sized districts and precincts were each controlled and influenced by a single Patron - and their devout followers - from a larger pantheon. Each dictating the cultures and structures - societal and the pysical architecture - of their "domain." Each maintaining the balacing of power between their divine brethren, whilst simultainously vying for enough influence over the material world that they could manifest as its one true God and rules. Different factions committing espionage while propagana slips from one district to another.

What would a God of nature look like in this world?

In a world of choking sky scrappers that breach the clouds, and undercity streets and sewers like in an unending maze of grime and filth. What would a "Patron of Nature" do with their domain? How would her Agents enact their will? What if it was a series of expansive roof-top gardens and fields, and her agents were tasked with making sure elements of the natural world still thrived, people still had access to food. But, on the flip side she could easily have followers who believe that their will is reduce the urban jungle around them to rubble and ruin, that "nature once claimed this world and it will again." Are they as truely benevolent as they appear to be?

As simple as the premise may be, I feel like I've found something that I can really sink my teeth into.

Lore A land embraced by the light of god; an introduction to ARET.

• Upvotes
WELCOME TO ARET, A LAND EMBRACED BY THE LIGHT OF THE GOD.

A very long time ago, in a place no one you know has ever seen or heard of, there had been a blazing sun known as Ishat, "the blazing one". In its orbit were seven planets and thousands of moons, all of them barren and lifeless under the sun's immense heat—all but a small desert world known as Aret.

Though Aret was alike to its sister worlds in terms of surface water, its subterranean streams allowed it to be home to several kingdoms of life who lived in its soil, aquifers/streams, and on its surface, the latter of which is notably home to the planet's "people", which are similar to modern humans in most ways, though they tend to be leaner and are partially nocturnal.

Aret's more habitable regions were divided into hundreds of city states of varying sizes, most notable of which was called Haishat, in which builders constructed towers and palaces that rose far beyond the desert floor, reaching closer to Ishat, whom they worshipped as their principal deity. In this land, the ruler held his throne upon a plateau in the highest hall of the tallest tower, being considered the mortal closest to God. As such, its royalty were believed to have been blessed by the gods, having a rare shade of golden eyes that doesn't seem to fade over the generations, unparalleled beauty, and, according to some, supernatural powers such as the touch of death and the ability to dream of things that have yet to come to pass.

In their culture, it is typical for people to kneel to the king as he speaks the words that were spoken to him by their patron god. Values such as politeness and piety were of exceptional importance in the sun kingdom, and, as to survive the desert, all clothes were made with hoods, which were also worn during occasions such as formal education and visits to the royal court, though it was common for many people to wear them in public most of the time.

Other notable settlements on Aret include Uris, which was located alongside an exposed part of a major aquifer and as such was able to cultivate a large amount of crops beneath the soil, and Kishet, which was an expanding military and political power several hours east of the city.

I'm only just developing this but honestly am interested in people's thoughts on the central idea. Feel free to ask me anything. ✨

Discussion What if the ambopteryx was the ancestor of birds instead?

I won't pretend to be an expert on dinosaurs, but I know my dragons and I had a brief idea for writing an alternate past where all present-day birds evolved from wyverns (dragons with two wings and two hind legs). And the Chinese ambopteryx's feathers and bat-like gliding wings fit my mental depiction of what an accurate wyvern may look like.

From what little I've learned so far, they weren't actually the best flyers; they were arboreal therapods that climbed trees and glided down from them to catch food. But hypothetically, let's say they managed to survive, get better at flying, and become *the* avian ancestor... what would that all look like? How would they have survived extinction and gotten the hang of long-range flight while maintaining those bat-like wings, and how would their present-day descendants appear regionally? Please discuss and let me know if I should pursue this project further.

Happy Dino Week, if you know you know!

Visual Worldtober Day 17 - Historic Monuments

Context: Tlanni is my fantasy worldbuilding project, a continent marked by thousands of years of history and myth and a slew of chiefdoms and burgeoning empires that seek to harness the secrets of the past.

Those traveling the roads of Tlanni are certain to come across massive and ancient monuments.

In the wooded Pa Aa' atlan region, towering stone ancestors are common. This one depicts a warrior, One-Foot, after a successful battle. Its face oozes blood-oil.

Along the Dead Coast far to the south, abandoned temples dot the countryside. This pyramid was likely a monument to a now long-forgotten king.

Lore Horrible Thing I've made

• Upvotes

So in my setting i Made Vampires a while Back. To sum them Up as concisly as possible, their based on Mosquitos, Ticks and Other bloodsucking critters instead of bats.(My mental Image is the Classic Vampire Lord throwing Open their cape and releasing a swarm of bats, but instead of bats it's mini Versions of the flying Plagas from RE4) But today i thought: how does ,,Vampire Magic" in my setting Work, as Magic is earned only through a very specific process which Vampires are usualy barred from. So i Drew from a truly horrible Natural process for Most insects: Metamorphosis. You See, much of Vampire's Power comes from their hive, as vampirism in my setting is a Parasitic infection, and as a Vampires Power grows, much of their Body Mass is replaced by Parasitic tissue, granting increasingly powerful Pheromone communication abilities, over time essentialy melding their mind with their hive. Their "Magic", aswell as their shapeshifting abilities come from the fact that the insectoid Organisms responsible for vampirism have an INSANELY fast metabolism, meaning they can essentialy undergo Metamorphosis in Seconds. So, a powerful Vampire can "Melt down" parts of their hive at will to make constructs, shape simple weapons or Take on their monstrous true Form.

Lore Elemental Magic System

So I'm working on a magic system and I wanted some advice on the Elements themselves. Essentially the magic works by pulling magic from one of 10 elemental flows. These flows of power (essentially Ley Lines) pull their energy from beyond the Veils, 5 dimensional layers of reality that keep pure magic out of the world. There are 2 elements per Veil.

The Elements are:

Veil of the Elements-

1- Fire Fire manipulation, creation (forging) and destruction (burning).

2- Water Water manipulation, memory, passivity

Veil of Being-

3- Blood Passions and blood manipulation.

4- Mind Illusion, telepathy, and reflection.

Veil of the World-

5- Nature(plants) Grow plants, control them, communicate with plants.

6- Wild(Animals) Speak/control animals, tracking, and adopting animalistic traits

Veil of Radiance-

7- Light Revealing truth, binding oaths, manipulating light, and purifying corruption.

8- Shadow Manipulating shadows, hiding things and truths, traveling through darkness.

Veil of the Cosmos-

9- Life/Death Healing/harming magic, vitality manipulation

10- Celestial Star fire, fate seeing, gravity

By combining elements, you can gain control over the physical and metaphysical properties of the combined elements, IE Fire and water= Steam, movement, change, Life and Celestial= Ressurection (everyone in my setting has a corresponding Soulstar that goes away when they die)

Each pair of elements is supposed to play off each other, while a mage can only ever utilize 3 Flows in their life, to allow for some mixing (if this is gamey, i want to do books and a TTRPG).

So, thoughts on these elements? Any advice, or is there anything you would change? If so why would you change it? I'm looking for some honest opinions here 😀

*Edit- Added elemental descriptions for clarity. Note that the descriptions should be used to give a general ideal, not a definitive boundary.
