It’s the most predictable shit in the world really. They just don’t have 15 years of dominance to back it up. The big 10 still has fewer titles than just bama this century let alone Florida, lsu, and Georgia who all have more than one.

Anyone who thinks the B1G is on the level with the SEC is either a) a fan of a B1G team, or b) a fan of a team victimized by SEC teams. Sometimes both.

u/ThadtheYankee159 Nebraska Cornhuskers Oct 15 '25
B1G is similar to ACC in that you’ve got a few big programs (OSU, Michigan/Clemson, FSU) who have historically held up the conference while the rest is uncompetitive. The last time a traditional B1G team won a Natty (so excluding more recent entrants like Penn State, Nebraska, or the PAC schools) was 1966 with Sparty. Meanwhile the likes of Alabama, Auburn, Georgia, Tennessee, Florida, and LSU have all won since then, four of them winning multiple.
Most conferences tended to consist of a few elite schools who hoarded most of the conference titles, (OSU/Michigan, OU/Nebraska, Clemson/FSU, while USC and Texas basically ran their conferences without one consistent rival). It’s just that the SEC has had more of those schools in the elite tier than others.

By top you mean just IU? I guess you could technically throw in tOSU since they barely beat Texas on “the biggest flops” first start, that’s really all they have. Sure they have talent and could very well beat anybody in the nation, but so could TxAM using that metric. IU and Miami are the only proven teams in the nation right now IMO. Bama has some serious wins but they have a questionable loss and could easily slide back into garbage play facing real defenses and/or decent running game.

I don't actively root for any other B1G teams...although I do believe the conference overall has taken big steps forward in the NIL era, I got tired of dragging this whole ass conference along for the longest time, particularly when it became apparent OSU didn't need a super strong B1G for our own success.
That said, even though they're a direct threat to OSU, I'm finding myself pulling for Indiana simply because it's such an insane story. One of the worst programs in NCAA football history and this bold and brash guy comes in and turns around the culture overnight, coinciding with a strong surge in NIL and intelligent transfer portal plays. And they look really damn good and dominant when you watch them, honestly as good as anyone I've watched so far this year. If it wasn't for name-brand biases, they'd be getting a lot more respect...as far as I'm concerned they should be ranked ahead of OSU right now based on what we've seen so far this season. I'm not even necessarily saying I'm confident they would beat OSU on a neutral field, but just based on results so far, they ought to be.

Inflated rankings don't make them true.
Texas was number 1, Penn State was number 2.
If you argue or disagree with those rankings then you have to agree with me because the context is applicable.
"Well they didn't deserve it anyway." Of course not, now that we know what we know of them. Which is what the rest of the country has been saying about the entirety of the SEC for 2 decades.
If you don't agree with Texas being pre-season #1 then you can't agree with the inflated SEC rankings in the current Top 25.
Of course, their SoS will be stronger when they're playing/beating teams that are ranked, that is what inflated rankings mean.

SEC is deeper. But might not be as good at the top. But I love the big ten but let’s be honest it falls off a cliff in a hurry. Ohio State is better than any SEC team. Indiana looks like they’d contend in the sec this year Oregon would compete too. After that who from the big ten would finish top 8 in the SEC. I think people are mistaking the SEC not being dominant at the top with them being bad. The ceiling may not be as high as previous years but the floor is incredibly high. Only garbage team is Kentucky. Even Arkansas is frisky and has a dynamic offense.

They need the “SEC cheated for 20 years and now there is a systematic power shift that’s leveled the playing field” narrative.
It allows them to conveniently hand wave away 2 decades of mediocrity under the SEC’s boot. They don’t have to acknowledge the mountain of historical evidence that the SEC is and has been, in fact, a superior football conference.
