Had a customer rant to me about Juneteenth and how "the wrong race got a holiday" and the banks should be open. Dude, you're in a grocery store, please stop being racist to me 😭 I'm being paid minimum wage for this

2.2k

u/kaikimanga MangaKaiki Aug 07 '26

I hear "All/Blue Lives Matter" way more than BLM where I live :p

613

u/derailing-ruby Aug 07 '26

Same here 😭 gotta love (hate) living in a southern bible belt

375

u/HistoricalLinguistic Aug 07 '26

I'm white and I once got called "racist against my own kind" by a white lady while working in a bible belt state😭

I was operating a ferris wheel that needed to be balanced so it didn't get stuck, and it just so happened that the white family next in line was too large and would've gotten it stuck, so I had the smaller Black family behind them go first instead

261

u/Horskr Aug 07 '26

Whenever they give you the 'our' kind shit, give them the, "You're out of your fucking mind if you think I'm one of your kind."

I'm so amazed as a white dude what complete strangers at bars (deep red county) will just sit down and say to me out of nowhere, assuming I'm just a bigot racist idiot too.

103

u/HistoricalLinguistic Aug 07 '26

Yeah it was super baffling. I hate being surrounded by friendly (to me) bigots that I know would make me unsafe the second I were to be honest with them about what I actually believe

43

u/Comfortably_Strange Aug 07 '26

I work in manufacturing (think large scale welding and assembly), and while the floor workers are (mostly) perfectly genial towards me, if they knew who I actually was and what I actually believe, I think most of them wouldn’t see me as a person. Hell, one of the welders has a confederate flag tattoo for all to see on his right forearm.

Someday I’ll get to leave and work somewhere else, but for now I just have to try to keep a professional distance from them.

2

u/dewag Aug 08 '26

I work in construction and have a similar situation when I'm working along side other crews.

I have fun with it though as I have a heavy interest in sociology.

I'd say something dumb to one of dudes co-workers about that "democrat flag" on the forearm and see what happens. Lol

Thankfully, my crew is open-minded enough to play along.

37

u/yIdontunderstand Aug 07 '26

I had that in Portsmouth UK in a chippy.

Went in for breakfast, customer before was black, when he left, person behind the counter came out with some outrageous racism cos I was white...

I left in total shock. (I'm from London)

I work at a disability law firm, when i first started i was in the intake department fielding calls from ppl who wanted help getting disability and helping to sort through who had a viable claim and who didnt. And the amount of white ppl with (per SSA standards) non-severe conditions and lack of medical care talking about the government “just giving my money to the illegals and the n—-“ was WILD. Like, my guy, YOU dont qualify for “your money” based on the SSA guidelines, why are you making up scenarios?!???

4

u/OkamiKhameleon Aug 08 '26

Just wanna say, thanks for what you and the lawyers you work with do! I'm on disability, and it took me a while to get onto it. I ended up hiring a disability lawyer and they were super helpful!

3

u/Kaytea730 Aug 08 '26

Oh, thank you! Yeah, its nice to be able to help people who need it

3

u/OkamiKhameleon Aug 08 '26

Yeah I have been much happier since being on disability. It's been much less stressful, and I haven't had any Crohn's flare ups that put me in the hospital since I got on it! It's been so nice.

And again, thank you for what you do!

34

u/SuspiciousReport6502 Aug 07 '26

I've had that happen to me while I was working. Guy said we had a nice store. He'd seen stores in the Dallas areas with too many n-words. I've never been more disgusted.

6

u/Anxious_Ranger_7945 Aug 07 '26

I hit them with the "sorry, I'm a Christian, not white trash" that breaks them because if they try to claim Jesus I would ask them to point where Jesus said "hate (minority they are complaining about) "

1

u/achiles625 Aug 08 '26

My mom and I were driving down to visit my brother and his family. A truck with a big confederate flag passed us. She points at it and said "There goes our flag." I immediately replied, "Not mine. The people who fought for that flag were bigots, losers, and traitors. I'm glad they lost." Then a truck with an American flag drove by. I pointed at it and said "That's MY flag."

My sister-in-law is black. My mom and her have a good relationship. She sits her mixed race grandchild. My mom worked in literacy programs filled with people of color for decades helping them learn to read and get their diplomas. She doesn't see the contradiction. Southern white culture sucks ass.

17

u/Nightglow9 Aug 07 '26

Can see the possible headlines of those wanting to twist that around too. «white person used black family to test out dangerously unbalanced Ferris wheel, while white family was kept safe behind.”

16

u/HistoricalLinguistic Aug 07 '26

lol, I mean, it was safe as long as the families went on it in the order I loaded them :D but yeah, could happen 😂

3

u/AnAbandonedAstronaut Aug 07 '26

"Ma'am, your family is to heavy to be the next family. I have weight limits and balances to take into account."

(Black woman with 44 hips walks past her to get on the ferris wheel with her two, well behaved kids in sharp looking clothes.)

Yeah.. Im adding a lot to your story.. but I could just imagine her face.

2

u/Swarm_of_Rats Aug 08 '26

I hated living there so much. I once had two customers call me names and ask me why I had "such a black name" (they said it with a slur tho). Not that it matters, but I was named after a white actress with a very white (though slightly uncommon) name, so they weren't even right about where it came from?

They harassed me for like 15 minutes and my supervisor had to come and shoo them away from me.

154

u/aziruthedark Aug 07 '26

Ditto that. Thin blue line, thin red line, thin green line. Thered be a thin white line, but someone snorted that already.

4

u/Tenalp Aug 07 '26

The number of Thin Blue Line Punisher decals I see on dumb lifted trucks in north texas is mind boggling.

3

u/gsfgf Aug 07 '26

Ain't just the South.

16

u/Lebowquade Aug 07 '26

Come to mass, even the rural farm areas are blue... Every single county went blue in the last dozen elections. We're a bunch of overeducated socialists and proud of it.

8

u/MitsuhaTakiName Aug 07 '26

I mean you very much do still see MAGA types around here. Everywhere has at least 30% voting for the other side. I remember for over a year around 2020-2021 there was a big pro-Trump banner that you could see from route 3 north just before the NH line.

1

u/Lebowquade Aug 07 '26

There's one narrow vertical strip around Worcester where trump received ~40% of votes. That's about as conservative as it gets.

Closer to Boston (generally anywhere east of Framingham) it drops a lot lower. Most places east of lexington/Concord Trump had only like 5% to 10% of the vote.

You still see maga types but they're definitely in the minority. The BLM signs for sure outnumber the thin blue line flags pretty much everywhere.

1

u/Comfortably_Strange Aug 07 '26

It’s not just the south unfortunately, rural New York can get pretty bad too.

1

u/karrowAce Aug 07 '26

I met and had the displeasure of sharing a study abroad host family with a girl from Buffalo last year who was so extremely out of touch and micro aggressive that I honestly wouldn't be surprised.

1

u/karrowAce Aug 07 '26

I tend to call the Bible belt Satan's ass crack with the way they treat people down there

1

u/AmarissaBhaneboar Aug 07 '26

I even heard it up in Michigan so often 😭😭 glad I'm no longer in the country

85

u/Im_Not_You_Im_Me Aug 07 '26

I thought I passed some sidewalk chalk that said ALM in my very quiet neighbourhood but it turned out it was three kids who wrote their initials which just happen to spell A.L.M.

I just moved here. Big sigh of relief.

40

u/gsfgf Aug 07 '26

One of the biggest used car dealerships in Atlanta used to be Atlanta Luxury Motors but renamed as just ALM when they started getting massive. So there are tons of cars in Atlanta with "ALM" stickers. Which confused the hell out of me when they started getting big since like half the people in their cars are Black.

2

u/IrascibleOcelot Aug 07 '26

And now I’m remembering the Disney Robin Hood when he was dressed like a beggar and asking for “alms for the poor.” Which is also hilarious.

2

u/kichisowseri Aug 07 '26

Huh, my default is "application lifecycle management" I'd have been bemused

1

u/Im_Not_You_Im_Me Aug 07 '26

Would be an odd thing to have notated on pavement for sure.

1

u/Room511 Aug 07 '26

Not that was anything wrong with the former.

11

u/Secundus-Muris Aug 07 '26

They always have the biggest victim complex.

5

u/morpheousmorty Aug 07 '26

Whenever someone says all lives matter, say: "yes, exactly, thank you for supporting BLM". Make them explain why all lives doesn't include black lives.

3

u/DateNightThrowRA Aug 07 '26

Oh! Quick question! Do the folks where you live call MLK Day “Confederate Heroes Day”, like some of the Southern Bible Belt states do?

3

u/CursedPhil Aug 07 '26

I mean if all lives matter why do they have such a problem treating black lives equally?

2

u/SunBlue Aug 07 '26

I feel like the All Ladies Lives Matter crowd is getting real quiet lately

2

u/Electrical_Fault_365 Aug 07 '26

And then they try to act all shooketh when you call them out on it, while supporting basically none of the policies that would actually improve everyone's lives.

2

u/jkoudys Aug 07 '26

I find those guys much scarier than all the Sons of Odin etc. types. The implied necessity of violence against black people of the Blue crowd, and the perpetual playing victim/pretending they're rational of the Alls, makes them more dangerous.

2

u/megabass713 Aug 07 '26

Ice T has a very good metal song "no lives matter" with his band Body Count

The intro has a very good explanation of why saying all lives matter is such a farce.

"It's unfortunate that we even have to say 'Black Lives Matter', I mean, if you go through history nobody ever gave a fuck. I mean, you can kill black people in the street, nobody goes to jail, nobody goes to prison. But when I say 'Black Lives Matter' and you say 'All Lives Matter', that's like if I was to say 'Gay Lives Matter' and you say 'All Lives Matter'. If I said, 'Women's Lives Matter' and you say 'All Lives Matter', you're diluting what I'm saying. You're diluting the issue. The issue isn't about everybody. It's about black lives, at the moment

But the truth of the matter is, they don't really give a fuck about anybody, if you break this shit all the way down to the low fucking dirty-ass truth"

1

u/ELLZNaga21 Aug 07 '26

“Blue lives matter” is really funny to me because of smurfs but also the fugates

1

u/Patukakkonen Aug 07 '26

I'm glad your town is raising awareness to the evergrowing problem of violence against smurfs.

1

u/Mysterious_Block_894 Aug 07 '26

You were born with hands that can turn into fists for a reason, you know?

1

u/strawhat068 Aug 07 '26

I'm just going to start saying no lives matter and see how that goes

1

u/Mad_Aeric Aug 07 '26

They rallying for Smurf equality now?

1

u/XB0XRecordThat Aug 07 '26

All jobs matter!

1

u/DOAiB Aug 07 '26

The whole all lives matter crowd is something else. You are either extremely racist, or extremely narcissistic and racist. Can’t let anyone have anything unless it benefits them and really even then they want to be the only ones benefiting and would rather have things made worse for them as long as it hurts someone else as well.

1

u/dogs_gt_cats Aug 07 '26

Unless those lives are little kids in a school shooting...

1

u/Willtology Aug 07 '26

I've never heard BLM spoken about positively outside my friend group. Lots of people complaining that BLM is everywhere and ruining everything though. Side tangent, when the Biden admin put the line on the WH form asking for your pronoun preference, I got nothing but texts from my MAGA older brother about how oppressed he was by trans legislation. Living in a small Alaskan town populated mainly by white Alaskan conservatives. Like brother, do you even know a single trans person? No? OK, please continue telling me how they're ruining your life. I used to live in Portland, OR. He was always telling me how it was a burned out husk because of BLM. Like... We just went there this summer and visited friends but sure, don't believe me because FOX and RT News says otherwise.

1

u/meatbutters Aug 07 '26

So they agree, the police are racist.

1

u/Training-Ad7414 Aug 08 '26

when the truth is, none of our lives matter.

1

u/Minotaar Aug 08 '26

There are no blue lives

1

u/thatoneperson185 Aug 08 '26

My store sells like different 3 back the blue products 😭

1

u/say_yes_to_head_hun Aug 10 '26

What the hell even are blue lives? Neytiri?

1

u/Ok-Importance-2282 Aug 12 '26

Probably because one is a fraudulent organization that collects money to fund lavish lifestyles of few and does not give back to the community in which it “aims” to help.

0

u/Savings-Tie4745 Aug 07 '26

Didn't folks stop talking about blm cause of the riots and fraud investigation by the FBI? Wasn't the blm founder found guilty of fraud???

5

u/ExcuseProper5768 Aug 07 '26

BLM the movement and the actual charity are two different things.

Something that's worked for me is acting dumb as shit. "Huh?" "What do you mean?" "What's Juneteenth?" "which race?" It really trips them up lol

92

u/ThatOneGuy308 Aug 07 '26

Lol true, just act like you have no clue what they're talking about, or even better, like they're the weird ones for knowing or caring about it.

36

u/EmoYoshi05 Aug 07 '26

Actually, seriously, what IS juneteenth? I'm German! Never heard of it.

62

u/Immediate-Salt5893 Aug 07 '26

Juneteenth (a blend of "June" and "nineteenth") commemorates June 19, 1865. On this day, Union Major General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, to announce that the state's 250,000 remaining enslaved people were free.

29

u/germanguy1810 Aug 07 '26

Different German here, thank you for explaining:D

14

u/Ashamed_Band858 Aug 07 '26

Different American here, it’s always good to learn, even about other people’s histories! Thank you for listening.

4

u/germanguy1810 Aug 07 '26

You’re welcome.  :D

24

u/ISketchDinosaurs Aug 07 '26

So it's not even celebrating black people specifically, it's celebrating the end of slavery?

Seems worth celebrating to me. I certainly see why black Americans would celebrate it enough for it to be made a holiday, it's not like they're a tiny minority or that no workplaces would notice if they all took the day off.

8

u/ThatOneGuy308 Aug 07 '26

Right, the only real reason many places aren't closed during it is the same "holiday erosion" that lots of modern American workplaces have, if it's not one of the "major" holidays, then they generally prefer to just stay open and have everyone work.

Banks and federal employees are about the only ones who get to keep most holidays, every other employer generally just says "you're on your own" if it's not Thanksgiving or Christmas.

1

u/throwingpurple Aug 08 '26

As a black woman working at a bank, it was very convenient for me! I got a paid day off to celebrate the holiday with my family. :3

1

u/ThatOneGuy308 Aug 08 '26

I don't get any holidays off, except Thanksgiving, because I'm always off on Thursdays, lol.

1

u/throwingpurple Aug 08 '26

Are you in the US? That seems like a breach of labor laws or something.

→ More replies (0)

5

u/Pixelbuttzz Aug 07 '26

Isn't it strange that conservatives constantly claim Lincoln was a Republican and that the Republicans ended slavery but then they get upset when we want to celebrate the end of slavery

5

u/ThatOneGuy308 Aug 07 '26

They'd probably celebrate it if they could rename it to Lincoln's Day, and make it all about his accomplishments rather than the actual act of slavery ending itself.

Same way they're perfectly content with enioying Mt McKinley and the gulf of America now that they renamed them, lol.

Also similar to how they love Columbus day, but hate Indigenous people's day.

2

u/HAIL_LUMPUS Aug 07 '26

You can't act like they're weird in a retail situation tho, you have to keep the customer service up you know? I was a server in the south so I got real good at being real dumb lmfao

3

u/ThatOneGuy308 Aug 07 '26

True, customer service means the act dumb approach is easiest, lol.

I occasionally use it even now in my job.

6

u/Moblam Aug 07 '26

Yeah, acting. So what is Juneteenth?

1

u/Viitori Aug 08 '26

Always the funniest way to deal with that because they WANT you to get offended. I typically ignore racist remarks by customers (I'm white, so not directed at me) and when I don't engage they talk more racist stuff cause they want to offend me??

107

u/PolyglotTV Aug 07 '26

Who complains about a holiday?

Like... Go to work anyway if you want. I guess.

47

u/Blunderhorse Aug 07 '26

I mean, I complain about our company’s executives sending out emails about how they want to recognize the importance of Juneteenth, but that’s because they send it just a few days after the email reminding us that it isn’t a paid holiday and anyone taking the day off has to use a vacation day or work a different holiday. I’m not even black, but it definitely feels like they want credit for acknowledging it’s existence while their actions are saying “it’s not a real holiday”

17

u/red__dragon Aug 07 '26

That's still better than my alma mater trying to send out "Winter Greetings" and acting like it was a "happy holidays"-type letter without trying to offend anyone by saying the wrong thing. It could have literally been titled December Newsletter and then at least it'd sound less like a robot wrote it (obvs this was before LLMs did write emails). Anyone who didn't celebrate Christmas or Kwanzaa wasn't getting their holiday off of scheduled classes, either.

3

u/ThatOneGuy308 Aug 07 '26

Lol same, ours always brings up how we can use our annual personal holiday for juneteenth if we want.

Though, at least we're consistent, since I don't get any holidays off, lol.

1

u/PolyglotTV Aug 07 '26

Oh lol okay. For us it is more like we get Juneteenth and MLK day off. There are some events and inspirational posts and such but for most people they are just nice bonus days off.

1

u/Ok_Spite2322 Aug 07 '26

Man, the general contractor I work under got Juneteenth off, but ONLY for their employees, all of us subcontractors still had to work. Fuckin corporations, I tell ya

1

u/CanadianODST2 Aug 07 '26

Isn’t that something that just happens with some holidays?

Like Remembrance Day here is a holiday. It’s also a federal holiday so federal employees get it off.

But it’s not a stat holiday. So the majority of places are open.

Same with civic holiday in August. Holiday but isn’t a guaranteed day off.

1

u/Blunderhorse Aug 07 '26

I suppose, but Juneteenth is the only federal holiday that we don’t get the day off. It’s not like Diwali where we work because it’s not a federal holiday, but a notable portion of our employees observe it and leadership acknowledges it in emails.

1

u/Visible-Air-2359 Aug 08 '26

TBF while I know less about your company than you I feel like there is a good chance they aren't against recognizing Juneteenth because they are racist but rather because they would prefer if workers didn't get any holidays at all.

48

u/Kell-of-Kellies Aug 07 '26

They only want white people to have holidays.

7

u/WileEPeyote Aug 07 '26

Which is hilarious because they looooove Christmas and are always complaining about people not respecting their Jewish Middle-Eastern messiah on that holy day.

2

u/rikashiku Aug 07 '26

This.

In New Zealand in recent years, Matariki(Maori New Year) became a holiday, and the racists have to whinge about it over and over. Like it affects them in a negative way.

Take the stat day and just drink al long weekend already.

2

u/ReasonableDefense Aug 07 '26

Sadly, very few people actually get off of work because of Juneteenth.

2

u/Comrade_Cosmo Aug 08 '26

A shame, My country collectively decided to celebrate emancipation and anyone who was against people taking the day off could get fucked.

1

u/FrosTehBurr Aug 07 '26

Personally I only hate the name, specifically. "Juneteenth" sounds like it came from Jim Crow. I'd rather call it "Freedom Day" to more accurately reflect what it's about.

1

u/Highlandertr3 Aug 07 '26

They probably don't work. Holidays don't matter if you are unemployed.

18

u/evencesb Aug 07 '26

I would have told him my partner is black

5

u/Pigosaurusmate Aug 07 '26

"Sir, this is a Wendy's" situation.

4

u/GreatestGreekGuy Aug 07 '26

I'm white but I still get Juneteenth off. I even had a coworker complain about it. How racist does someone have to be to get a day off and complain about it because it's not about their own race?

3

u/lakija Aug 07 '26

People who complain about Juneteenth I assume are unhappy slavery and suffering ended for a significant portion of American citizens. Or else they wouldn’t be angry. Someone told me Juneteenth was racist but they just huffed and left with no explanation of why.

5

u/Razoron33333 Aug 07 '26

So I accidentally did this at first but after the reaction I got I keep doing it because it’s just the best. Whenever anyone complains about Juneteenth I just pretend to not know what they are talking about and half the time they just putter themselves out and then the other half they will explain it, generally with quite a bit of bias, and then I’ll say something along the lines “that’s a great idea for a holiday” it just completely wrecks them as they think they just made another supporter of the holiday

2

u/SuitableReaction6203 Aug 07 '26

I had a similar experience work the register at target. It was the middle of February and they were ranting how there were books/media of or made by black people. I had to keep tell him. It was black history month and he kept arguing about people will point what was and wasn't racist. đŸ€Š

11

u/TheFallingWhale Aug 07 '26

I'm fine with Juneteenth as a holiday but the name is bad . Why not Freedom Day or Emaciation Day or follow the 4th of July and call it the 19th of June. So many better options.

28

u/TheBitingCat Aug 07 '26

Emaciation Day

They said "Freed at last!' not "Feed at last!"

17

u/Live_Blacksmith6568 Aug 07 '26

emaciation day? 😭

3

u/Nowhereman55 Aug 07 '26

Not another one... 😞

14

u/zadtheinhaler Aug 07 '26

Emaciation Day

I mean, many of them were emaciated, but I think you're looking for "Emancipation".

7

u/TheFallingWhale Aug 07 '26

Spelling has never been one of the things I'm good at

4

u/FVCarterPrivateEye Aug 07 '26

To be fair, "emancipation" to "emaciation" has a sort of similar ring to it of converting "June nineteenth" to "Juneteenth"

2

u/Humble-Captain3418 Aug 07 '26

Honestly, you seem to be above average.

34

u/stormyarthur Aug 07 '26

It’s been called Juneteenth for about 150 years. It’s a fun name, let people have something joyous.

3

u/lakija Aug 07 '26

Apparently not. I feel like we are always scrutinized for something or other. Jeez

1

u/TurquoiseLeggings Aug 07 '26

It always being called something doesn't absolve it from being a stupid name. Either the name of the holiday is stupid, or the fact that it's only one day is stupid. There are 7 days that can qualify as Juneteenth, why the hell would you pick that as the name for a single day?

1

u/Jaderosegrey Aug 07 '26

Emaciation day ... is that the day we celebrate Anorexia?

(Psst! I think you meant Emancipation!)

3

u/FoxResponsible8924 Aug 07 '26

Juneteenth did kinda screw me over this year. I had to mail a package by June 19th, and they would have been able to get it there on time if the post office wasn't closed for Juneteenth.

Although last year I drove to the DMV, and it was closed for Confederate Memorial Day, so I guess it evens out... sorta?

3

u/ReluctantNerd7 Aug 07 '26

Confederate Memorial Day

the

what?

2

u/FoxResponsible8924 Aug 07 '26

That was my reaction at the DMV. Turns out it's regonized in many Southern States, and in Mississippi, Alabama, South Carolina, and Texas it's a state holiday. In South Carolina (where I'm from), it was made a mandatory state-close holiday in 2000 to appease racists so they could pass MLK Jr. Day.

1

u/Deez_Nuts_God Aug 07 '26

Yo wtf 😂

1

u/ace-murdock Aug 07 '26

Where are you located? That would make me lose it.

2

u/derailing-ruby Aug 07 '26

Florida 💔 i want tf out of here

1

u/FancyHeart Aug 07 '26

Sounds like my shift, you work at a Walmart?

1

u/EndIsrael Aug 07 '26

I set up a trailer outside the post office on juneteenth and get a lot of business printing shipping labels for all the people who forget it's a holiday in my 91.7% white city (only 0.7% is black)

1

u/ffishbones Aug 07 '26

I'm black and I appreciate the existence of Juneteenth, but on the bank part he's kinda right. I don't think businesses realize the amount of hate they're causing the holiday which in turn leads to people blaming the black community. My entire county closed down public transportation on Juneteenth since it was a holiday. Yeah... Let's celebrate the freedom of black people by making sure none of them can get on buses again 😒

1

u/Majestic-Iron7046 Aug 07 '26

My theory: Those kind of people either thrive on the shock that being so dumbly extremist gives to reasonable people or are actually looking for people like them to build a sense of community and reduce the isolation caused by their own peers that tell them it's fucking idiotic to like Nazis.

1

u/Gohan933 Aug 07 '26

Imagine being called one of the good ones as a black person 😭. I am like dawg please stop

1

u/ADeletedUser2 Aug 07 '26

I have to hear both ends of the spectrum because I live in South Africa and most of our black customers hate white people and most of our white customers hate black people. Racism is universal over here

1

u/Raviolius Aug 07 '26

"Sir, this is a Wendy's."

1

u/HenryWallacewasright Aug 07 '26

Oh, that reminds me about a couple weeks ago I was on the bus at 5am and some guy went on a racist and conspiracy riddled rant.

I was way too tired for that bs at that time in the morning.

1

My hairdresser got into a bit of a biggeted rant about Ethiopians taking over Minnesota. Pretty sure they were trans too which completely flabbergasted me. But I guess bigotry can come in all forms.

For whatever reason idiots think I’m a safe person to speak garbage about others. I’m not.

I just had an uncle tell me "No one even knew what Juneteenth was 10 years ago until it aired on Blackish". They live and breathe all over the place.

I would also rant about Juneteenth, but not the day, just its name. You’d think that such an important day would have a better name. It’s not even clear which day it is, like other holidays with their dates as their name. Which day is it? Idk, it’s either June 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, or 19. Like, really?

Maybe a bit too conspiracy-pilled, but I swear that it was named that way to downplay its significance.

I hope you replied "Sir, this is a grocery store"

I heard an old customer once rant to her (gay and italian) hair dresser about pride month then at check out make racist comments about italian immigrants to me (the bi and italian receptionist). I’d experienced homophobia before but honestly the anti-italian racism was a new one for me, like I’d heard stories of it from my dad’s childhood but I kinda thought the US was passed that

(Disclaimer for the europeans, I know neither of us are italian to your standards, I’m aware we are americans. But we are italian-americans and on this side of the world the country of your ancestors means something, it means something very different than being from there yourself but it does mean something)

I ran a crawfish boil for my grocery store one year. I give samples to everyone who asks. One scraggly white man saunters up and asks for a sample. I give him a crawfish, and the tutorial on how to eat em. He says "oooh this is delicious, so this is what them (slur with a hard R) eat in louisana? Them (slur with a hard R) sure know how to eat, amirite?" He was saying it SO loud too. I felt so horrible but I couldn't leave. I just told him I refused to serve him any further. He got angry and started slur-ing louder, but eventually left.

They want the captive audience. They also assume if you look like them, you agree with them.

And Juneteenth shouldn’t even just be a holiday for black people. Yes, of course in some ways it’s for the African American community
but are you telling me we all shouldn’t be celebrating the day our country got rid of fucking slavery

That’s so clearly a net positive for society.

They don't do therapy, they bark their issues at cashiers

Juneteenth is a dumb federal holiday only because it wasn't even the last of the slaves being freed. It made more sense as a local holiday for local freedom.

People who call themselves republicans angry about how we celebrate like one of the greatest Republican achievements.

“ Labor is prior to, and independent of, capital. Capital is only the fruit of labor, and could never have existed if labor had not first existed. Labor is the superior of capital, and deserves much the higher consideration” - Abraham Lincoln

“The workingmen of Europe feel sure that, as the American War of Independence initiated a new era of ascendancy for the middle class, so the American Antislavery War will do for the working classes. They consider it an earnest of the epoch to come that it fell to the lot of Abraham Lincoln, the single-minded son of the working class, to lead his country through the matchless struggle for the rescue of an enchained race and the reconstruction of a social world.“ - Karl Marx congratulating Lincoln on his re-election.

4 and a half months later he was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth because Lincoln gave a speech supporting limited voting rights for Black Americans.
