Polls for New Wiki

As a part of the new wiki, I want to include some buying advice on which kits to buy. This will be based only on polls. The polls feature here blows, so this will be in several parts.

First up - of these major brands - what’s your personal choice?

Best ekits under $1000 USD

The big buying guide got too long, so I'm moving the kit-by-kit beginner's kit comparisons to this post.

This guide is based on manufacturer's specs and the recommendations I've seen on this sub over the past few years.

Last updated: October 2026.

If you find this guide on a site other than reddit, someone has copied this guide. Come over to http://reddit.com/r/edrums for the most updated copy.

Experienced drummers

If you're an experienced drummer (2+ years) look at the big buying guide for intermediate kit recommendations. Beginner's kits aren't sensitive enough for good dynamics.

https://www.reddit.com/r/edrums/comments/1wl935y/which_ekit_should_i_buy/

What are the best kits under $1000 USD?

For the basics on what to look for in a beginner's kit and also a bunch of info on accessories, etc. look at the big buying guide I just linked above.

The best values on the market currently are:

Millenium MPS-750X (moving hi hat and multi-zone ride for under 500 euro, you will pay tariffs in the US)

Simmons Titan 50 B-EX (module has the same capabilities as the Titan 75, better value than Alesis Nitro Max, only available in the US)

Yamaha DTX6K-X (An intermediate module for a beginner's kit price, great sounds on the module, this really is a great deal. You can buy the moving hi hat later or get it right away on the DTX6K2-X.)

What about Roland or Alesis? Why Yamaha, Simmons, and Millenium?

Here is a more detailed breakdown of what is available on the market:

Yamaha DTX6K-X if you can afford it: Yamaha is offering their DTX6K-X for under $1000 USD now, which is a big surprise for a kit with an intermediate level module. The DTX6 kits have the same module that comes with their $3500 DTX8K-X kit. People here have said that its sounds are better than Roland's TD-07 and TD-17 series. You can add your own sounds to the module. It has a sturdy, good sized rack. The DTX6K-X is an intermediate kit so you can expect it to be more durable than the other under-$1000 kits.

DTX6K-X has rubber toms which are not as popular as mesh. Its pads are also smaller than most other kits. You can replace its rubber toms with generic mesh pads, you just have to adjust the settings on the module.

Bigger pads are not a bonus on an ekit. They tempt you to be less accurate when you strike. But bigger pads sell better because they make it look like the kit is a nicer kit.

For a lower budget: if you're outside the US I'd suggest Millenium MPS-750X. If you're in the US I'd suggest the Simmons Titan 50 B-EX.

The Alesis Nitro Max and Nitro Pro are also very popular kits, and they are also good choices. Roland is the top name in ekits but their beginner's kits are overpriced and they don't give you anything the other brands don't have. Yamaha DTX6, Simmons, and Millenium give you the most for your money on under-$1000 kits.

Don't buy this kit: I'm putting this on the under-$1000 list because the Simmons Titan 90 is starting to go on sale for less than $1000. It has a new type of snare that has a bad reputation for failing. (This is only a problem for the Titan 90. The Titan 50 B-EX and 75 have a reliable snare.) Don't buy the Simmons Titan 90.

Roland: Roland is the top name in ekits because of their digital pads. Their beginner's kits can't use digital pads and they don't offer anything the other ekits don't. You are paying extra for the brand name. The rack on the TD-07 and the TD-07 is so, so tiny. It makes those kits feel cheap and uncomfortable compared to my Simmons Titan 50. The TD-07 kits are a lot less expandable than most of the other beginner's kits out there. The toms are only single zone. If you get a second crash you can't use the bell on the first crash. The only benefit the Roland kit will give you is a little more durability, which doesn't really matter as long as you have a warranty on another brand's kit.

Millenium MPS-750X vs other kits with moving hi hats: Millenium has a moving hi hat, a three zone ride, and dual zone toms for less than half the price of Alesis, Simmons, Yamaha, or Roland kits with those features. The Yamaha DTX6 module sounds great. The sounds on the Millenium, low-end Alesis modules, and low-end Roland modules are disappointing and you will probably want to use a VST. (More on VSTs later in this guide.) Don't buy the Simmons Titan 90.

Donner DED-300 vs Millenium MPS-750X: Go with whichever one is cheaper. They are very similar kits, and I haven't yet heard of any big differences between them. For people in the US, the Donner kit is the cheapest kit I know of with a moving hi hat that you can get without paying tariffs. But I'm betting that the Millenium MPS-750X would still be cheaper even with the tariffs. I haven't heard about the DED-300 module yet but Donner's DED-200X and Millenium's MPS-750X both have a reputation for modules that don't sound as good as Simmons or Alesis.

Donner DED-300 vs Simmons Titan 50 B-EX: The price is not bad on the Donner 300, with a moving hi hat, more zones on the toms and cymbals and the prettier shells on the pads. I haven't heard about the sounds on the DED-300 module yet. The Donner DED-200X module has a reputation for sounding worse than the Alesis Nitro kits. (And the Alesis Nitro kits sound worse than Simmons kits.)

If you are in the US I'd stick with Simmons just because of the quality of the Simmons module. I'd be surprised if Simmons kits don't have an aftermarket option for a moving hi-hat soon. If you want a kit that comes with a moving hi-hat, it might be cheaper to import a Millenium MPS-750X. But the Donner kit looks like a solid option. If you buy it, let me know what you think of it.

If you are outside the US, Millenium vs. Simmons: Simmons doesn't offer a warranty outside the US. Millenium gives you more for your money than Simmons. Simmons doesn't offer a moving hi hat on their under-$1000 kits and you can't upgrade a Simmons kit to the Titan 90's moving hi hat.

If you are in the US, Millenium vs. Simmons Titan 50 B-EX or Titan 75: The tariffs probably make Millenium too expensive to be worth it. Simmons has a much better sounding module. The Simmons module can hook up to a VST without an audio interface. But the Simmons rack has rack connectors that can break if you overtighten them. Use your warranty to get replacements if they break.

Alesis vs. Millenium: If you are in the EU, Millenium gives a longer warranty. Outside the EU it is the same. The build quality is very similar. Millenium gives you a lot more features for your money. None of the beginner's kits from either brand sound all that great. You might want to use a VST. (More on VSTs later in this guide.) The Alesis Nitro modules don't sound great either, but they do sound better than Millenium.

Alesis vs. Simmons: For the Nitro Max, Nitro Pro, Titan 50 B-EX, and Titan 75, Simmons kits have a longer warranty, excellent warranty service, a better sounding module, a more sensitive hi-hat controller, and a module that can hook up to a VST without an audio interface. The rectangular bar rack on the Simmons kits helps keep your pads from slipping. But the rack connectors on the Simmons rack are skimpy. Don't overtighten them or you'll need to call Simmons and use that warranty to get some more free rack connectors.

Alesis Nitro Pro vs. Simmons Titan 75: Simmons has all the advantages described above in the Alesis vs. Simmons comparison, plus the Titan 75 has more zones on the ride compared to the Alesis Nitro Pro.

Alesis Nitro Max vs. Simmons Titan 50 B-EX: Simmons has all the advantages described above in the Alesis vs. Simmons comparison. Also, the Titan 50 B-EX is upgradable to a triple-zone ride, but the Nitro Max can only use a single zone ride. Both the Titan 50 B-EX and the Nitro Max can be upgraded to dual zone toms. The Titan 50 has a sturder, nicer rack than the Nitro Max has, but don't overtighten the connectors.

Alesis Nitro Max vs. Donner DED-200X: Donner DED-200X doesn't have anything that the Alesis Nitro Max doesn't, plus the module sounds worse than the Alesis Nitro Max. Until the price drops significantly lower than the Nitro Max, the Nitro Max is a better value. The included throne is not an added value. See the section about thrones in the big buying guide.

Should I get the Nitro Pro, Nitro Ultimate, Titan 75, or Titan 90?

Do not buy the Simmons Titan 90. It has a new type of snare with a big reputation for failing. The snare on the Titan 50 B-EX and Titan 75 is reliable but Titan 90's is not. Do not buy the Titan 90 kit.

Don't be swayed by a kit having a snare stand. You can pick up a snare stand on Reverb for $30-50. Any cheap stand will work great. The more expensive ones are for drummers who need to adjust their stands very quickly as they set up for shows, for much heavier acoustic snare drums.

My first choice would be the kits with moving hi hats (especially the Yamaha DTX6K2-X or DTX6K5-M) if they are in your price range. (Don't buy a Titan 90.)

My second choice is the Yamaha DTX6K-X because it has a great module.

For other kits without moving hi hats, the Titan 75 and Nitro Pro are the more popular kits but I think the Titan 50 B-EX is the best value, followed by the Alesis Nitro Max or the Millenium MPS-450.

Remember, a beginner's kit is only going to be suitable for about 2-3 years if you play regularly. After that, you will need to upgrade because the Nitro Pro, Nitro Ultimate, and Titan 75 modules are not sensitive enough for experienced players. I wouldn't pay extra for a kit that isn't suitable for an experienced player.

(Note: The Yamaha DTX6K-X kit is suitable for an experienced player. It is an intermediate kit that is selling for a beginner's kit price.)

The 50 B-EX is a good value because it has basically the same module as the Titan 75, but with fewer sounds and preset kits. It's a great sounding module that can handle a triple zone chokable ride and dual zone toms if you want to upgrade later.

The only reasons to go for the Titan 75, Nitro Pro, or Nitro Ultimate instead of the Titan 50 B-EX or Nitro Max are (1) if you're sure you want the extra zones on the cymbals and toms right away (2) if you want the prettier aesthetics (3) because the Nitro Max has a wobbly, small rack compared to the Nitro Pro.

The Titan 50 B-EX or Nitro Max are a better value.

If aesthetics are important to you I would save up and start with an intermediate kit, not a beginner's kit. Look at the end of the big buying guide for intermediate kits.

Extra cymbal and tom pads are nice but I don't think they are a feature worth paying extra for, and you can add a few extra pads to your kit later, if you want to.

On the main drumming sub when a beginner says they bought an acoustic kit with lots of toms, the advice is to put those extra toms on the shelf because too many toms can be overwhelming to a beginner. For me, three single-zone cymbal pads and three single-zone toms were plenty to start with.

Bigger pads are not a bonus on an ekit. They tempt you to be less accurate when you strike. But the bigger pads sell better because they make it look like the kit is a nicer kit.

The bigger kick pads look nicer but they work the exact same way as the smaller kick pads. Yes, you can use a double kick pedal on the tiny little kick pad that comes with the Titan 50 B-EX, the Nitro Max, or the Roland TD07-DMK. It just has to be wide enough for both beaters to strike the pad.

There is a lot more info in the big buying guide so make sure you read that if you haven't yet.

Practice Tips Trouble with practice

I think most e drum hi hats kinda suck, they don’t really sound like an acoustic one (with is understandable) and I feel like it’s keeping me from progressing. For example I’m practicing my Moeller technique, and the fact that I can’t differentiate the sound of the hits (like when I hit with the neck or head) is kinda problematic for me. I keep progressing on everything except my hi hat accuracy.
Any tips?

I designed a 3D-printed modular mount system for 38 mm e-drum racks (stick bucket + headphone hanger, free files)

My headphones kept ending up on the floor and my sticks were never where I needed them, so I designed some mounts for my rack.

It's one pipe clamp with a dovetail socket, and you slide in whichever add-on you want:

* Drumstick bucket to keep your sticks within reach
* Headphone hanger with a crowned rest that follows the headband, so it doesn't put pressure on one spot. This one needs supports which are included in the printing profile
* Double clamps (left or right) if you want two add-ons on one spot

It fits any 38 mm rack pipe. I use it on a Millenium MPS-750X. Everything is printed, including the M14 thumb bolt and nut, so you don't need any screws or hardware. I printed mine in PLA on a Bambu A1, and the clamps print without supports.

Files are free on MakerWorld: https://makerworld.com/models/3447906

Happy to hear ideas for other add-ons. A phone or a cap holder is next on my list.

Beginner Needs Help Best budget-friendly headphones or IEMs for an electronic drum kit?

Hey everyone!
I recently got an Alesis Debut Kit and I’m looking for budget-friendly headphones or in-ear monitors (IEMs) to use with it.
My main priorities are:
-Good noise isolation, I want to block out as much of the acoustic tapping from the drum pads as possible.
-Comfort during longer practice sessions

I’ve also read some negative opinions about the Alesis Debut Kit on this forum, so please let’s put those aside for this post 😅 I know it’s an entry-level kit, but I’m genuinely loving it and feeling super motivated to learn and practice! 🥹❤️ I’m just looking for the best headphones or IEMs to enjoy playing it even more.

Would you recommend over-ear headphones or IEMs for electronic drumming? Are there any specific models that offer particularly good isolation for the price?
I’d appreciate any recommendations or personal experience. Thanks youuuu!

Kit for a beginner

Hi, what would be a decent kit for a beginner to buy? It would be my first real kit and I'm wondering what could be a good choice for like Clone Hero or Paradiddle on VR.
Anything decent, worth taking a look at and possible to use for any of those or maybe both Clone Hero and VR.
Thanks in advance!

KDQ-8 vs KT-10 -- which is the better bass pedal trigger for quiet drums?

I'm interested in both he KDQ-8 and the KT-10 for my bass drum. I live in an apartment so minimal noise is high priority. I'll be using a Noise Eater mat as well.

If you had the option, which would you pick? I like the idea that the KDQ-8 can incorporate my own double bass pedals, but I'm concerned that it might be a bit louder...

Yamaha DTX10KX vs Roland TD516

Apologies if there is already a thread on this.
I am genuinely torn.
The yamaha’s tcs heads and hardware appeal to me.
But Roland’s alleged superior digital hihat, snare and ride is appealing.
I come from an acoustic drumming back ground and my living situation has changed so I need an ekit.
Can anyone please advise as to which kit is superior for them? Or if I’m overlooking something.
Thanks 👍

Upgraded IEMs suggestion? Thinking 64 Audio (non-custom)

Hi all - I have some regular KZs, KZ Zenith, moon chu and a couple others. All are pretty great, all <$150.

I'm ready to upgrade just a bit to the $500-$700 range and am thinking of 64Audio Aspire 3 universal (not custom). I'm thinking that my sonic foam tips will provide just as good noise isolation as the customs, at $200 less. Perhaps I am mistaken, or that they will change the soundstage or somesuch.

Any others of that class range that should definitely be considered?

Kit is currently a Roland TD17, will be upgrading to something modern come black friday

Help - Roland Overhit Troubleshooting Help

I have a problem with my snare that I'm having trouble fixing. My module is an old Roland TD-9, and the snare is an old Tama 14" x 6" A-to-E conversion. It has been giving me intermittent double hits for a while now and my own lack of competence is probably part of the problem.

I've played with the sensitivity and threshold settings with limited effect, and I'm starting to wonder if I even comprehend what those adjustments are doing. I did replace the main piezo a few years ago, but my problems persist. The worst of the double hits seem to occur in one specific area

Should I just look for a replacement, or are there specific troubleshooting steps that I might not have tried?

Beginner Needs Help hey guys are electric kits actually quiet emough for living in an appartment with other people in it

So im like most people at my age(19) still living with my parents and brother and in an appartment, im a guitarrist, i mostly play right into an interface and the sound that makes is fine and noone has a problem with it.

Im looking to get a drumset to learn as just a little hobby thing and to understand them better so, first question are they actually quiet enough for this since im still hitting like plastic im still kinda worried it might be annoying for those around me, and second question is if not if it would be viable to just get drum lessons without a drum kit at home or if that would achieve nothing, also if anyone has any recomendation on begginer ekits that are on the affordable side id apreciate it

Trouble adding BT-1 to the Aux input on V31 Module

I just got a BT-1 trigger bar I want to use as a cymbal. I plug the bar in and assign it in the trigger list and no sound comes out. If I assign the BT-1 as a CY-12 I get a cymbal sound from the assignment bank but all the sounds play as if its choked. What am I missing here? How do I get the sound to ring out.
