I should know this for certain, having seen the original film as many times as I have, but I don’t believe that at any point there is any specific reference to any real place in the state of New Jersey in the original film nor is there any discernible signage that would indicate a real place in New Jersey. The only thing that I can really think of is the “Elston Oil” truck which had a real 973 area code phone number on the side which was correct for the time period in that part of the state. It was actually is/was a real company and people still call the number from time to time:

In any event, I’ve counted numerous references in Crystal Lake which have been neat:
-A mention that the Chief was a police officer in the city of Newark-the state’s largest city then and now. The Chief leaving the city and heading west to sleepy little Blairstown/Crystal Lake in the early 1970s which was post the Newark Riots is perhaps a plausible sub plot, though his sister mentioned something about corruption and bribes.
-The two would be kidnappers/assassins claiming to be NJSP Troopers-I knew right away it was either poor costume/casting or that they were not actually NJSP. They are always square jawed and clean cut with a high and tight–plain clothes or not.
-Their car being found in Middlesex County-probably supposed to be New Brunswick judging by the urban setting whether it actually was or not.
-A resident of Crystal Lake/Blairstown lamenting the “limp dicks in the state capital” for banning bear hunting. After being decimated in the late 1800s/early 1900s the bear population was so low in New Jersey from the 1940s until the late 1990s bear hunting stopped entirely. Since the 1990s, their numbers have absolutely exploded and the last four governors have taken various stances on bear hunting which is always a controversial topic pitting largely conservative residents of the Northwestern part of the state who actually have to deal with their problems against others who do not believe that their numbers should be culled.
-I thought I heard something about a prize winning pumpkin at a fair or festival in Trenton. The capital city of Trenton did host the state fair during that time period.
-Reference to the “M.E. in Newton.” Newton is the county seat of Sussex County, which is adjacent to Warren County. In present day, Warren County (which is still sparsely populated by NJ standards) shares a medical examiner with Morris County, which is further east and much more populated. Back then it could have been plausible that Warren County and Sussex County, both very rural and partially populated could have shared a medical examiner.
-I just caught a post about a character named “Harmony” - I must have missed her name somehow while watching the show. There is a real town not far from Blairstown/Crystal Lake called Harmony which is also in Warren County.
I’m only three episodes in so I’m sure there will be more. Did I miss any so far?
