This is not Victorian English. You have to say Labour. Not Labor /s

u/WellDoneGoodPeople 1d ago
And let's be honest, the true Victorian English version would be less flowery and way more imperially racist.

Shakespeare died 200 years before the Victorian era began.

And even in Shakespeare's time there was a difference between literary language and spoken language. The average person in Shakespeare's time would've talked like a cockney with an accent.

As other commenters have said there’s plenty of issues of historical accuracy but… that voice is genuinely so good, I need him to voice count orsino, or something by Shakespeare. Maybe prospero. I don’t know, he has a good evil laugh but doesn’t seem suited for evil characters.

u/janzeera 20h ago
There’s a guy at work that speaks Victorian. At the end of the shift he says, “at last we’re reached the closing formalities.” I look at him and say, “you mean we’re clockin’ out?”

I didn't necessarily mean the accent, just the versatility and general tone of his voice was very nice.

"Victorian" English being a mash of flowery language with a doth and hath thrown in to sound more "English", ends up being an out of time mash up of several periods of language.

And his laugh later was a bit Plankton!!

Curseth is a finite verb, it can not be paired with be. Shakespeare himself wrote "Cursed be my tribe."

I miss the time when acts of parliament started with a page or more of Whereas this, And whereas that, And whereas something else, May it therefore please Your Majesty etcetera.
Bonus points when each section starts And be it further enacted, That something something something.
This is why the obscure Burslem Markets, Lighting and Police Act 1825 is my favourite. It must have one of the longest sentences most people have ever seen, starting in the middle of one page and running to the middle of the next.
The King's Printer also graciously provides catchwords which greatly aid reading and I wish were still a thing in books in 2026.
I think I would like to be transported back 200 years.

the bit was bad too. he just keep adding fluff that wasn't contained in the original simple statement.
not to mention, yeah the surviving literature & art from that era was art-y *shocked Pikachu face*
we're not reading the normal conversations at the local inn nowadays. were reading the stuff that intentionally written beautifully.
it's like "you complain a lot" vs "you doth protest too much" ... which is direct and he decided to add words for no reason to "I beg thou to seize your incessant protest of the current, rather dire, circumstances." ... like sure but you can say that long in normal English too, like you would on a novel: "bitch, I told ya, it's so fucking annoying how you constantly complain - cut that shit out"

Nobody with a working class job talked like that, and nobody that talked like that (if anyone!) had that kind of desperation.
If you had an education, you could always do something different, and if you had the right education, you were the sort that didn't really have to do anything at all.
