Everyone is lonely, but not everyone is lonely in the same way.
Some people are lonely when they're physically isolated from others and some people are lonely even in a room full of people that love them.
Those are two common examples, but there are endless ways in which people can feel lonely, 8 billion ways in fact.
And there's not always a clear answer; some people are just lonely. It's a normal part of the human condition to feel lonely, and while you may want or even need to do everything in your power to rid yourself of it (depending on the severity of your situation), just know that being lonely in and of itself doesn't necessarily mean that there's anything wrong with you.
We don't measure or rate or judge each person's level of loneliness here and decide if they're "lonely enough" to be welcome here nor do we dictate any absolutes about the conditions for being lonely or how someone must behave if they're "actually lonely."
Every human-being in the world is welcome here, and their story for how they feel loneliness is valid; their pain is valid. As with most things in life, there's the book definition of a thing and then there's the complex emotional reality of a thing. Loneliness is a relative experience, and the way some people experience it won't always make sense to others, and it doesn't have to.
Just as there is no one-size-fits-all approach to feeling loneliness, there is no one-size-fits-all approach to healing either.
I don't presume to know your pain; we don't know your pain; tell us about it:

If you're feeling such extreme pain from loneliness to the point of contemplating suicide, please don't. Just don't.
Things to consider:
How old are you? Did you know that the brain isn't fully developed until around the age of 25? That means that if you're a child, teenager, or even a young adult, by merely waiting out the storm, you might find sunshine on the other side, by simply maturing into the fully-formed you.
How bad is it? As bad as it can get, it can almost always be worse. It's important to respect everyone's pain, because it's relative. As much empathy as one can have, you can never really feel another's pain, only your own. Still, it's important to keep perspective and think about the cruelty and lack of freedom experienced by those around the world.
Time is a master in its work. We've all heard the saying that "Time heals all wounds." Well, it's pretty true for the most part. As long as you first get away from the toxic people, places, or circumstances that are hurting you and causing you trauma, the healing can begin. How long it will take, really depends on the person, and what they've experienced. It took me years to get over some of the trauma that I suffered. It's not that I don't still feel some level of pain from it, but my trauma no longer owns me; I own my trauma.
Suicide prevention starts and ends with you. Life is full of neverending beauty and darkness. I don't know about you, but I want to see it all. I want to stay on the path that is existence for as long as I can, even if at times, I have to walk through broken glass.
But, sometimes you need a little help. Share your thoughts here in this sub, reach out to a mental health expert, or maybe give a suicide hotline a try. As tacky and empty of a gesture as it might seem to put out the cliché boilerplate message: "If you're having suicidal thoughts..." I don't know, maybe these tools are actually pretty helpful for some people? It might be worth a try. The big one is:

**Full Disclosure:* I'm just a regular ol' dumb-dumb. I know just enough about psychology to get into trouble, but I'm certainly not an expert. All I can offer is that I care, and speak honestly from my heart. If you have ideas about ways we can improve r/loneliness and resources we should add, please share. Thank you.*

Many people come here just to share their story, vent, or get perspective, with no interest in connecting beyond their posts, and that's completely fine. Others do want to make connections, and that's fine too, but it's worth being careful.
We'll leave the decisions up to you, but here are a few things to keep in mind:
Don't share personal details too quickly. You don't need to give your real name, age, or location. Being vague is okay, and people worth connecting with will respect that.
Protect your contact info. Avoid sharing your phone number, email, or home address early on. There are free tools that let you communicate safely without exposing your real info.
Be cautious with links and files. Don't click links or download anything from someone you don't know well yet.
If they ask you for money, stop. It doesn't matter how the request is framed or how long you've been talking, block them and cut contact. This is always a scam.
If you do decide to connect with someone, these tools can help you do it more safely:
One more thing. Be mindful of the usernames and photos you share. If they match other accounts you have online, someone could easily link them together and find out your real name, location, or other details you didn't mean to expose.

I see so many beautiful women here who seem to be looking for someone special, and it makes me hope they know how much they have to offer.
I’ve missed out on a lot when it comes to relationships. I never went to either of my junior or senior proms. I went to school dances alone, hoping someone might notice me or ask me to dance—even if it was just for one song. After high school, things didn’t change much.
I’ve felt lonely for a long time, and at 48, I still do. I’m sharing this because I hope anyone who feels held back or overlooked remembers that they’re worthy of love and connection. Please don’t let fear or doubt keep you from putting yourself out there. You deserve the chance to make the memories and find the connection you’re hoping for. ❤️

I’ve never been the popular one growing up. I never had a big group of friends, i never had friends i could depend on. I had a few that stuck around for a few years. Now in my 30’s, everyone has gone. I truly have no one around me. The last person i had just left me after 11 tears together. No conversation, all these memories and time together gone in a puff of smoke, as if it never existed to begin with. I find myself looking around the house at night, unable to sleep, and i see her everywhere. In every corner of the house, i remember her. Imagining her back when she was still roaming about. And i cry silently.

“That’s the thing about friendship… it’s a lot rarer than love because there’s nothing in it for anybody.”
This hits differently as you get older.
Making friends seems easy when you're young. You meet people, hang out, talk about random stuff, and somehow become close without even trying.
But as an adult, it feels different. Everyone has their own life, work, responsibilities, and problems. People drift apart, conversations become less frequent, and making plans becomes a never-ending “we should catch up sometime.”
It's strange how you can know so many people and still not have someone to call when you just want to talk.
No expectations, no favours, no hidden intentions. Just a genuine friendship where both people actually want to be there.
When did making friends become so difficult? And where do adults even go to find genuine friendships anymore?

I can’t do this

So Im a 31 year old man, I don't have any real family connections, and I have friends but I don't connect with ppl like that, I can go days without talking with no issue, but I have my dogs, particularly Daisy. I got her when I was fresh out of prison and homeless and that dog gave me hope and a reason to do better she is my responsibility. And as I sit and try not to think it one day she will be leaving me, this dog has been the reason I lived, I had to take care of her, and the day she goes I just don't know what will happen, I do know it won't be good not for me, I'll prolly spiral, it's the only thing in my life that no matter how bad I fucked up she was still happy I was there that's all she ever wanted anyways. How do ya keep going when the little light ya have goes out?

No one talks about how lonely it is going to work, coming home and having no close friends, no plutonic soulmate, making dinner you don’t eat, watching your comfort show bc you’re comfortable with it, getting high, crying randomly bc it’s the only emotion I can feel anymore everything else is numb, going to sleep likely crying in bed smooshed in your blankets or crying as you sit for an hour in the shower as the water goes cold and being single (I’m fine with it I’ve been hurt and led on and taken advantage of too many times so I’m done dating). I really don’t know what’s wrong with me that I choose friends that burn hot, very quickly and are toxic af that keep hurting me. If anyone is nice to me, I believe they’ll leave and they usually do. And if I open up instead of remaining being private and closed off then people see me as overwhelming and too much, unpredictable and clingy.
I’m 26, I feel like I’m too old to find a “plutonic soulmate” best friend who doesn’t leave me when things get hard and is there for me. I’m ALWAYS there for other ppl and I don’t think anyone appreciates that. When I become friends with you, I’ll give you the most intimate and personable bday gift, I’ll answer if you call me at 3am and listen, I’ll do ANYTHING for you…once I trust you and although it takes me a long time to truly love you but once I do I never let go. I might be a bit much at times, a bit overwhelming, I might get into my head or go in periods of depression that I can barely function but I’ll be there for you.
I’d honestly rather be cripplingly alone than burn through another friendship that only lasts a year at the most and hurts me, leaves me, amplifying my abandonment and trust issues.
Sorry for being so depressing ya’ll
