What am I supposed to do?
I get anxious whenever I'm about to make friends with someone.
Currently I'm living in the middle of nowhere, in a tradeschool that's far away from the places that everyone else goes to.
There's other students in the tradeschool (including me), which are living in there, but there aren't any hobby groups. We have work and classes during half of the day. There are clubs, but they're just for: learning how to be an adult, LGBTQ+, or venting. I've went there before and there's almost always nobody there since people don't really care.
There's a building with a gym, billiards, table tennis, basketball court, and an arts & crafts room.
I guess I could go to the arts & crafts room during my free time, but, I'm nervous. How do I introduce myself to people? I've spent most of my time being a loner IRL. Making friends online is so much easier than making friends IRL.
The pros of having friends IRL is that if you manage to somehow form a close friendship, not only can you share your hobbies and interests together with the feeling that you have a presence of someone in-person (instead of talking to someone through a screen), but you might also be able to hug or even cuddle with them.
The cons of having friends IRL is that the smallest things, like subtle body language might matter, and you probably have to pay money to visit them consistently, unless they're already close by.
I've never reached the point where I can hug or cuddle them. Mostly because I lack the courage/confidence to deepen our friendship.
In-fact, for as long as I've been in my tradeschool, I haven't really played videogames with other people (temporarily) besides like 2 or 3 times, and that was it. Then nothing for many months.
But videogames aren't my only hobbies. I also like anime, manga, music, and art, for example.
I'm not that good as an artist, I'm assuming since I'm on the aphantasia spectrum, but I also spent a lot of time drawing with barely any practice. I can't really use professional software because it's too intimidating (like controlling an airplane with like 100 buttons).
I also feel like every day, I need to explore more and more, or else I won't be good enough as a friend. For example: not enough videogames, not enough anime, not enough manga, not enough music, not enough art, etc.
Sometimes my anxiety also occurs with online friends. For example: if I REAAALLY like someone, I will panic because I feel scared that they might leave me, or they might stop liking me, and if that happens then all of my progress would go to waste, and then I would have to find somebody else.
Why do you have to be so consistent with friendships? Months is a VERY long time. Don't you know what it feels like to be lonely while waiting for such a long time? Sometimes you become desperate, but some people say that you shouldn't look desperate, or else there's a chance people won't like you.
Sometimes I keep things to myself, while not knowing when it:s appropriate to say certain things and what. And then sometimes I overshare too much. Also, sometimes I don't know if something is okay or not (like oversharing for example, or things that depend and can vary for different situations).
I've tried getting a therapist, but they're not helpful. They do what I call "false engagement" to make it look like we're making progress, when it's mostly just filler, padding, and nothingburgers. For example, they might acknowledge what I say, ask me questions, take notes, or say "yeah", "mhm", "uhuh", a lot. That's it. They rarely give me solutions/answers for my problems. Sometimes they even admit that they don't know what to do, but that's only sometimes, because most of the time they just don't say anything.
In case you're wondering, it's a CBT therapist, and it's my first real therapist (besides school-provided therapists who were even worse).
The appointments take such a long time though. It's like one whole month of waiting, more or less. That's way too much time of having to wait while dealing with my problems. Each appointment only lasts like 1 hour, which I guess is fine, but I wish my therapist were more helpful and useful.
I also have a psychiatrist, but it also takes way too long to talk about changing medications until one of them works.
As far as I know, I only struggle with social anxiety (when trying to make friends), loneliness, and tourettes.
I try to hide my symptoms because I assume it would make other people feel uncomfortable/awkward if they were to see me doing tics (e.g. physical or vocal). However, sometimes it's too intense and I can't hold it anymore, and then I have to do tics. When this happens, I feel embarassed about myself because I don't know if people would be okay with the fact that I have tourettes.
