Because most AI don’t know visual balance. They do not value empty space to guide the eye at all.

158

u/jadie_bae 22d ago

What generator are people even using for them they all look identical

u/Muleahcar 22d ago

I want to know this too. Everything from my toddler’s soccer school to my local food truck all looks the same.

When I worked at T-Mobile my district manager would make AI posters like this for every competition. Kinda annoying and made me not care about the competitions.

u/Deldenary 22d ago

My mom is a member of a charity service club and has been making the posters for years, a new member joined who likes using AI and now she's been replaced by them. She still runs the social media and is constantly getting messages looking for information about events, despite the AI posters having the information they are asking for written on it, people just can't find the info on the poster.

10

u/Heated13shot 22d ago

Is that why I have to put a decent amount of focus just to read what the flavors are?

I can't just glace at it and get the info, it's like where's waldo.

u/Cybot5000 22d ago

Remember: You can easily write a prompt that wouldn't be nearly this aids looking. People just don't even bother with that.

133

u/dancesquared 22d ago

Well, that’s part of the problem. AI is too much of a “yes man” that doesn’t push back on ridiculous, counterproductive prompts. And the average person is too stupid to realize that balance and strategic use of space is part of good, readable design.

36

u/B-Train_ATL 22d ago

That’s almost literally my job. “Hey, this doesn’t look good.” Computers seem super unwilling to call BS like that. I mean people such as interior decorators and movie directors get paid because they’re good at this.

56

u/SylviSweetheart 22d ago

God, it took me reading this comment to finally put it together: AI is the embodiment of the WKUK tattoo parlor sketch.

“You put no thought into this tattoo.”

“I put some thought into this tattoo!”

As a graphic designer, this is the kind of shit a client has in mind; just a clusterfuck of random colors, overwhleming information, and no flow. Last year, I had a client want a billboard in that koolaid pineapple hot neon pink background with the regular flavor wings yellow text. They legit didn't understand why I said that was a bad idea.

49

u/bunker_man 22d ago

Hence the issue. AI makes randoms able to make a poster, but it won't make them know what type of poster looks good.

→ More replies (1)

16

u/mudgrinder 22d ago

This was pretty much along the line of what I was thinking when I saw the poster. This poster here is exactly why companies should hire graphic designers instead of using AI.

84

u/Timely_Yoghurt_3359 22d ago

AI generated images are notorious for "visual noise." They add way too much detail to everything and feel the need to fill any blank spots.

133

u/cupcakebean 22d ago

It's like AI puked everywhere and called it a poster.

“New flavors, pink addition”

146

u/Lonely_Dependent_281 22d ago edited 21d ago

This is the kind of thing AI would get right though. It's a human mistake that comes from poor vocabulary. I guarantee the prompt included the words "pink addition" spelled just like that.

I think AI is impacting people's ability to think logically. Even critiques of AI lately seem to lack follow-through, like this guy genuinely can't tell why I said this

I genuinely feel sadness for all my friends that studied graphic design for a career. Im not dunking on their choice. I just genuinely feel bad that this is happening.

197

u/AWL_cow 22d ago

Don't feel too bad - this garbage is temporary. If anything it will make people bored of ai and then there will be a big demand for human made designs again. Its only a matter of time before the pendulum swings.

44

u/aguywithbrushes 22d ago

Not gonna happen, and I say that as an artist. Yes, there will be people who specifically seek out human made art, and artists (and their jobs) as a whole won’t disappear, but you vastly overestimate how much people care, and aren’t accounting for the fact that AI can make art that doesn’t actually look as obnoxious as this.

I tested it myself almost 2 years ago and generated some art (paintings, to be fair, which can look good more easily) that legitimately would’ve fooled me.

I was just on Etsy the other day, looking at watercolor wedding invitations, custom maps, etc. Most of the listings were selling AI art, they had thousands of sales (usually 5x-10x more than artists doing the same thing with real art), and all the reviews were praising how good the artist was and how “the watercolors” looked so incredible “and for such an affordable price!!”.

The illustrations were obviously AI to me, because I know what it looks like, but overall they looked pretty nice, and that’s all the average person cares about. They want something they like for the price they can afford, doesn’t matter if it comes from a real artist, a machine, or a sweat shop in China.

16

u/bunker_man 22d ago

People forget that just because every sign they see that looks like this is made with ai doesnt mean every sign made with ai looks like this.

The fact that I see this for 95% of the food trucks I go to anymore illustrates the reality. Many of these owners would rather die than spend another cent on graphic design.

17

u/bunker_man 22d ago

Most of them weren't spending before now either. People forget how many small businesses either had stolen art, hand painted stuff clearly made by someone who never painted before, or random clipart.

14

u/cadaverdogs 22d ago

That’s me! I’ve been one for over 20 years. Thankfully I went back and got a communication degree not to long ago, so I’m still useful.

About 50-60% of my work is graphic design. I’m thankful where I work they sees the value of a real person behind the job.

85

u/Valuable-Trick-6711 22d ago

This actually hurts my eyes to look at. There’s way too much to process.

20

u/wfpbrecipes 22d ago

A lot of it comes down to cultural preferences too. Look at Indian media from the past 30 years it is way more colorful and busy than anything in the west. The AI makes an average of all its training data, much of which is not culturally appropriate then does a bad job with it

53

u/cracked-tumbleweed 22d ago

They think it’s good enough for them in the short-term, but as a customer, Im not eating at a place that isn’t willing to showcase their food.

This is a red-flag to me and Im tired of seeing these low effort menus.

25

u/Comfortable-Ad-3988 22d ago

If they're not willing to invest the bare minimum in their own promotion, what am I supposed to infer about the effort they put into their food? This kind of ad makes me assume they got their recipes from ChatGPT, too, and cut every corner possible in production. No thanks.

I guess if people have the money to spend on a prepackaged pineapple spear and 50 cent packet of koolaid for literally 4-5x the price (or 10x if you just bought a fucking pineapple) than by all means go waste it in this.

but if you buy one of these things you have no right to complain about money

Can you elaborate on what you were taught and what is going against it here? I definitely don't like this, but I can't verbalize why..

45

u/Previous_Beautiful27 22d ago

Because composition matters. Negative space matters. You want to guide the eye, you want to express your intentions concisely in an easily digestible manner. You want something pleasing to the eye and inoffensive. You want to draw the viewer in and highlight your key points.

When an LLM just vomits all over the image, it’s the exact opposite of everything a successful piece of print copy should be. It’s messy and aimless and cluttered and incomprehensible to the eye. It’s jarring and off putting. It repels the eye.

I can’t wait til people get over this style of AI slop advertising.

A new restaurant is opening near us. Their previous posts were just interior sneak peak photos of the space. Then, they posted an AI burger and got ripped to shreds in the comments. They deleted it pretty quickly.

I also send feedback to these restaurants, especially ones that just posted normal photos of their food before, and it has stopped or lessened the use of gen ai. Some people don't get it but frankly, I don't know how. I was looking for some specials for a particular day of the week on Instagram and every flyer looked the same but they were all different places. Disappointing.

That doesn’t make it ok to fill the world with slop, nor should people who want to run a small business operate under the idea that you cannot possibly be successful without using ai whenever possible. Use AI when it makes sense and when it creates actual improvement and value (which for reference, usually doesn’t scream chatGPT did this for me for free).

Make sure you also tell them the menu itself looks like a chaotic pile of dogshit, but like if my dog ate a unicorn

Any business using these kind of ads won’t get a dollar from me period. I’m ok if a bit of Ai is used bit composted together properly by a human but this nonsense gives me the ick right away

Same but also ick aside it tells me several things about the advertiser which make them lose credibility in my eyes.
1, They don’t see a problem with selling something (especially food) using false images of the product instead of a real photograph.
2, They have very poor judgement and taste. I truly do not trust the decision making skills of somebody who looks at this abomination and thinks “oh this will make me look like a legitimate and trustworthy business owner.” Absolutely piss poor reasoning skills.
3, Rules for thee and not for me. Every time I see one of these I comment and say that a dumb electronic flyer is a bad use of AI because of the water and energy consumption of data centers, and without fail every single time the person responds and says “I know it’s bad for the environment but it was just this one time and doesn’t it look nice? What was I supposed to do, not advertise my business?”
