  1. Mett is great 2. Not every German eats or likes this. 3. It's fairly regional

Edit: because people were asking: I'm from Frankonia (Bavaria) and Mett wasn't a common thing for me. Yes, you could get it, but it wasn't something you'd see a lot.

In Belgium it's beef

7

u/Firm-Pass2033 10h ago

Tried it years ago in a restaurant in Tongeren. I think it was toast cannibal on the menu. Definitely beef.

6

u/Ooficus 9h ago

I’ll willing eat raw beef, but definitely not raw pork.

3

u/moldbellchains 8h ago

I'm German and I never thought abt that. I grew up w this food, village life, we would serve it at every event, party etc. It kind of becomes normal. Strange to see it's not normal and it's something of concern even.

1

u/BellamyDunn 7h ago

Our whole food system situation over here in the states is an ongoing concern đŸ„Č

1

u/moldbellchains 6h ago

Ohh ok 😬 I'm sorry

99% true but not always. The sandwich shop i used to drive by in Mont Saint Guibert had both a beef option and a 50/50 split option and a pure pork option. It’s rare but not impossible.

2

u/Bored_Simulation 9h ago

Half german, half belgian here: I'd say Américain/Préparé is closer to Mett than Martino

1

u/ExtraReborn 8h ago

Yknow, I just realised I've never had washyoursistersauce

1

u/moldbellchains 8h ago

Belgians got it as well??

Makes me uneasy

1

u/Low-Attitude8331 7h ago

28

u/howreudoin 10h ago

Mettbrötchen are peak amazing.

Along with onions, salt, and pepper, just like on the picture. If you ever visit Germany, make sure to try out one.

Also keep in mind, those Brötchen are real bread – not soft toasts. (If you think there‘s no difference, try real bread first.)

Yes, not everyone likes them. That‘s true for every dish. But I, for one, just love them.

11

u/deinemutter1969 8h ago

For me proper butter makes it even better. Fresh Brötchen is important too. I work in construction and sometimes, on special occasions we get like 1,5kg Mett for the four of us and have a feast. Love it

2

u/Wise_Cryptographer19 7h ago

Especially the Mett breath is awesome and if you're sitting long enough in your breakroom Container it turns into mett-sauna xD

1

u/chillicampari 2h ago

mett-sauna was not a word I was expecting to see today, but I did.

1

u/das_Moppi 4h ago

The fine „Maurermarmelade“

1

u/vajhar 7h ago

I wouldn't call wheat Brötchen real bread personally. Maybe whole grain but plain wheat Brötchen simply lack character

1

u/deinemutter1969 6h ago

It's not the good and healthy stuff but it's the tasty combination. I wouldn't combine a wholegrain bread with mett somehow

1

u/vajhar 6h ago

Gods no mett has to go on plain wheat Brötchen xD

I'm just pointing out Brötchen aren't real bread like the previous comment said. It's the right bread for the given task but not something I'd consider real bread like Bauernbrot or Schwarzbrot

1

u/Boschkommmalher 5h ago

Depends. Pumpernickel could be awesome, could be terrible, but Mett with Dinkel-Roggen-Krustenbrot out of a wood fired stove is peak pleasure!

1

u/kittyf0rman 2h ago

This depends on the region. In Baden-WĂŒrttemberg for example wheat bread and bread rolls are the most common ones whereas rye bread and mixed grains are less eaten.

1

u/AllegedlyLiterate 6h ago

Can I get some more clarification on the bread-toast distinction you’re making here? Do you just mean not stuff that comes from the grocery store or is it a shape-based distinction? Is a bakery loaf also not real bread? What about a non-loaf bread but from a cheap grocery store brand?

1

u/deinemutter1969 6h ago

Where are you from? Are you familiar with the german bread system?

1

u/AllegedlyLiterate 5h ago

Canada. Given that I’ve asked about your bread reasoning you can assume I don’t already know. In English lots of different types of bread can be toast if you slice and toast it so maybe something is lost in translation here.

2

u/Jay_Quellin 5h ago

Yes , in Germany only a specific type of bread is called toast. But Germans typically don't know that this isn't the case in English because the word is English. It is the square soft sliced white wheat bread that comes in plastic bags from the supermarket and is used for sandwiches in North America. In Germany, this type of bread goes in the toaster. People usually don't eat it untoasted. And other bread typically doesn't go in the toaster. What Germans call "real" bread is much denser, with a hard crust and mostly darker and comes from a bakery. It's often, but not always, sourdough and made of rye. But there are many varieties.

1

u/AllegedlyLiterate 5h ago

Okay so what about like a baguette? Is that just neither bread or toast?

1

u/profdrpoopybutt 4h ago

Baquette is denser and has a hard crust i.e. it's bread.

1

u/deinemutter1969 3h ago

I didn't want to be unpolite. It's just very complicated without sounding like a dick. Where ever I travelled there is no bread like at home and even these breadrolls that are the best for mett are quite unique eventhough they are the cheapest you get in a bakery. Bread is a bit of a religion over here and hard to explain

1

u/puking_penis 5h ago

germans call sliced bread "toast" regardless of any previous encounter with a toaster and to me that's flat out nuts

1

u/AllegedlyLiterate 5h ago

Okay so this person is just saying it can’t be sliced bread and assuming that means better bread but not factoring in for the possibility of a really crap roll

1

u/puking_penis 5h ago

or a nice crisp sourdough pullman loaf

1

u/CalmCelebration10 1h ago

What germans call toast isn't really bread.

1

u/howreudoin 5h ago

I recommend visiting [r/brot](r/brot) to look at real (home-baked) bread. Delicious!

1

u/Whoppertino 6h ago

Everyone has had "real bread". It's not some hard to find novelty...

1

u/CalmCelebration10 1h ago

It is outside of Germany

1

u/Double_Soup644 3h ago

Got once the hint to add something sweet like honey.

Works really well. But well, sweet and savory is just a match made for heaven.

7

u/Esava 10h ago

Is it regional? Which area doesn't have it? Obviously not everyone likes it or eats it regular but afaik it's a thing everywhere in the country.

6

u/Successful-Return-78 8h ago

Which area doesn't have it?

South. You can't get fresh Mett at the butcher in most of them

3

u/MaldonadoMVP 8h ago

I‘m from the south and you can get it basically at every butcher shop where I live. It not called Mett though, it’s usually called “BratwurstgehĂ€ck”

1

u/WarmEarth8 6h ago

It’s called Handwerker-Brötchen at my local bakery. (North Germany.)

1

u/RandomBoxOfCables 6h ago

Hackepeter in Brandenburg, it’s delicious

1

u/Gliese832 6h ago

I occasionally eat Mettbrötchen at a local bakery chain in the Stuttgart area.

1

u/casce 4h ago edited 4h ago

BratwurstgehÀck is not the same thing as Mett. Mett is typically only seasoned with salt and pepper while "BratwurstgehÀck" is seasoned to taste like... Bratwurst (which makes sense because it literally is the raw Bratwurst).

It's both raw pork and they taste kind of similar but they're not exactly the same.

I'm also from the South (lived in both Lower Frankonia as as well as Upper Bavaria) and you will not find BratwurstgehÀck everywhere either.

Some butchers will have it, most won't. It's just not as popular in the South and you have to sell it the same day you make it so it makes little sense to have this ready-made. Especially when you can make it on-demand.

Any proper butcher will just make it for you if you order it. It's not difficult to make, it's just minced pork with seasoning.

1

u/Esava 3h ago edited 2h ago

It's just a different type of Mett then. Just like not all Mett is Zwiebelmett etc..

1

u/Esava 8h ago

Oh I am surprised by that. Well they are definitely missing out. The rest of the country has it though.

2

u/Assumption-Weary 8h ago

In my experience it’s fairly common in Bavaria(Oberbayern). I’ve never seen Rewe or Edeka not have them at their food counter.

1

u/EstablishmentFar7029 7h ago

Mettbrötchen? Are you sure its not just regular minced meat? In 25 years here i never saw it, but maybe i just didnt pay enough attention

1

u/Assumption-Weary 7h ago

I’m confused, maybe I need to do some research.

1

u/Assumption-Weary 7h ago

I just found out that Mett and Zwiebelmett is something completely different, my bad. At least I know what I’ll try out sometime

1

u/StrollingJhereg 7h ago

That's simply not true Greetings from Franconia ;)

1

u/Celindor 6h ago

I'm living so deep in the south, you'd end up in Switzerland if you were to go a metre more to the south. And we have Mett in every store and at every butcher shop.

1

u/PlatformZestyclose67 8h ago

You need butchers, I think people stopped buying it where they don’t have or frequent butchers any more.

1

u/New-Glass-3228 6h ago

Growing up in Baden I only knew from the TV. Also in WĂŒrttemberg it is not a thing.

1

u/Snotlout_G_Jorgenson 5h ago

Well, I know that it's common in Lower-Saxony.

1

u/medizynisch 5h ago

I am from Northern Germany, and it’s a thing. You can get mett/mettbrötchen not just at every butcher, it’s available at every bakery.

2

u/[deleted] 7h ago

[deleted]

3

u/LordADKellner1992 7h ago

This is so wrong. Mett is way more common in the north of Germany. Shows to not rely on reddit for info.

1

u/kallefranson 7h ago

I primarily associated Mett with East Germany to be honest. Never really been to the North-west though.

1

u/Important_Reward_440 7h ago

Cant confirm this. We eat a lot of Mettbrötchen here in Hamburg.

2

u/Wannabe_Buttercup322 9h ago

What do you mean by regional? It’s sold by butchers all over the country.

5

u/Drapausa 9h ago

Where I'm from we hardly ever eat it.

1

u/motorfreak937 8h ago

In which region of Germany its not common?

5

u/Minebeck 8h ago

In the south, bavaria isnt big into Mett

1

u/Upbeat-Mail7201 8h ago

It's not ? Didn't knew this, we in Brandenburg love it xd

1

u/Minebeck 8h ago

1

u/MaxHeadroom999 8h ago

Bayern eben

1

u/Broad_Philosopher_21 8h ago

Every vinzenz murr has it and they are everywhere

1

u/Bohnenbummler 8h ago

I've never seen anyone in the Stuttgart Region eat it as well

1

u/tolafoph 8h ago

Yeah, coming from Hannover I had to asked around to find any in Stuttgart.

1

u/critical-insight 8h ago

Construction workers in Munich near my office disagree.

1

u/Spice_and_Fox 1h ago

You can still easily get it here. Even some supermarket butchers sell it here as well. Regular butchers should basically all carry it as well

1

u/dnylive 8h ago

Near baltic sea coast (Rostock) for example.

1

u/Wannabe_Buttercup322 8h ago

I’ve lived there for a few years and still visit regularly and can definitely disagree! It’s very common up there.

1

u/dnylive 8h ago

born and raised there
i‘ve moved at some point and still visit regulary (2 to 4 times per year). so

1

u/maiwson 8h ago

It's available everywhere and doesn't have to be sold the same day.

1

u/Upbeat-Mail7201 8h ago

Exactly

1

u/MaxHeadroom999 8h ago

Schau dir mal die deutsche Hackfleischverordnung in Ruhe an.

Was du bestimmt meinst, ist Zwiebelmett.

1

u/maiwson 8h ago

2

u/No_Phone_6675 8h ago

Not common in the south. Tried Mett the first time in my 20s when I moved to Cologne, not bad but also not a favorite.

1

u/Sinbos 2h ago

Definition of south? Around Stuttgart you get it at the butcher for sure

1

u/Short-Awareness-8002 8h ago

I think he meant not a traditional meal in all of germany more in like hamburg for example

1

u/Towpillah 9h ago

Like what? Like AI-mettslop?

1

u/Spinnenente 8h ago

nah you can get it in Frankonia its just BratwurstgehÀck

Its not as usual and the typical butcher shop food is LeberkÀs

1

u/Drapausa 8h ago

Hab ich noch nie gehört, lustigerweise.

1

u/Spinnenente 8h ago

1

u/ipreuss 6h ago

BratwurstgehĂ€ck is not guaranteed to be safe to eat raw. It’s also seasoned differently.

1

u/nikolapc 8h ago

I can't even risk a rawish pork chop, but I devour stake tartare, and make my steaks blue. Sometimes I risk a burger with a pink inside if it has been sufficiently spiced and 100% beef.

1

u/Mobile-Committee-466 8h ago

I'm from Meck Pomm and we love Mett as well. And Fischbrötchen.

1

u/Plus_Carpet6282 8h ago

Is it regional tho? Everywhere I go, the bakeries and even the butchers offer mettbrötchen on a regular basis

1

u/Entire-Flower423 7h ago

1

u/ba573 6h ago

Wine franconia? cause in beer franconia thats completely normal

1

u/Drapausa 6h ago

Funny. Not sure what you count as Weinfranken. Im from Mittelfranken, close to Erlangen.

1

u/user-the-name 4h ago

It is also a cause of the extremely high levels of toxoplasmosis in Germans:

Similarly, Hackepeter or Mett, a German dish made of raw minced pork meat, is more popular and consumed more frequently in eastern Germany compared with western Germany. This dietary preference was linked to a higher T. gondii seroprevalence in the human adult population in eastern Germany

https://www.eurosurveillance.org/content/10.2807/1560-7917.ES.2025.30.34.2500069

1

u/JKOttawa 2h ago

Yeah. Eating raw meat is never a good call over the long run. Cook your food 😂

1

u/lykan_art 2h ago

It’s not fairly regional. It’s one of the most bought meat products at meat counters (Fleisch-/Frischetheke) throughout the country.
You just didn’t notice that because you live the furthest from where it was invented and also the south already has the LeberkĂ€sweck.

1

u/Drapausa 2h ago

I'm not saying you couldn't get it, I'm saying it wasn't something a lot of people ate.

1

u/lykan_art 2h ago

I also didn’t say you couldn’t get it. I’m saying the opposite, you can get it everywhere. Because it’s not regional, it’s, countrywide, one of the most popular fresh meats bought in supermarkets.

1

u/at0mheart 1h ago

Surely not sold the same day it’s made

1

u/chrischi3 1h ago

It's a thing up here in the True North.

0

u/autistic_and_angry 8h ago edited 7h ago

How do you prevent parasites?

Edit: I'm genuinely asking, why is curiosity downvoted these days?

4

u/LiamPolygami 8h ago

Good food safety laws and testing

3

u/Eldan985 8h ago

Clean drinking water and stables for the pigs, veterinarians inspecting the meat very closely, clean butcher shops and uninterrupted cooling chain.

1

u/autistic_and_angry 7h ago

It's pretty cool, honestly. Germany is pretty dope for having good food safety enforcement. I would never trust raw pork here in the US, especially with the bullshit happening lately.

2

u/Good_Theory4434 8h ago

Originally you ate the meat directly after killing the animal
