Continuing a trekking company in Nepal with animal welfare at its core. Does this model make sense?

Hi everyone,

I am in the early stages of building something new within my family's trekking company, Himkala Adventure. The company was established by my father 11 years ago, and he has been running a free walking tour of Kathmandu since then. I am a trekking guide myself, so I will be guiding the treks personally.

I have been thinking a lot about how tourism in Nepal interacts with animals, and I want to build something different within the company.

The idea is simple. A percentage of every trek booking is set aside for animal welfare in Nepal. Specifically, I want to support:

  • Elephant retirement sanctuaries that provide chain free care for rescued and retired working elephants
  • Street dog and cat rescue programs in Kathmandu that provide sterilization, medical treatment, and shelter

I have not approached any organizations yet. I want to build a track record first, set the money aside honestly, and then approach them with a real proposal rather than asking to use their name before I have done anything.

My plan is:

  1. Continue running the free walking tour in Kathmandu to build reviews and reputation
  2. Sell a few realistic treks that I can actually afford to run ethically
  3. Set aside the promised percentage from every booking in a separate account
  4. Approach animal welfare organizations once I have money set aside and proof that I am serious
  5. Formalize partnerships and name them publicly once they agree

I am not trying to pretend I am already a big ethical operator. I am trying to build one from scratch without cutting corners on animal welfare or on how I treat my guides and porters.

Questions for this community:

  • Does this model make sense to you?
  • Would you trust a company that says it sets aside money for animal welfare before it has formal partnerships?
  • What would make you skeptical?
  • What would make you believe it is real?

I am not here to advertise. I am here to learn from people who actually care about this stuff before I put anything on a poster.

Thanks for reading.

Question/प्रश्न In a rational discussion, Is it ok to point out the other party in the argument is uninformed?

When I talk to some people on some topics, like economy or philosophy and sometimes politics, I often face people make some very uninformed arguments mostly based on hearsay. It prompts me to point out that you are uninformed and you need to do some reading. But I feel that might easily be misinterpreted as "personal attack".

I see media interviews in the west, where people make scathing argument about the opponents lack of information with strong words (still respectful), but in Nepal it seems its frowned upon. Take for example, Swornim Wagle (I have some disagreements with Wagle but that's besides the point). I assume Wagle knows much more about economics your average politician/interviewer in Nepal. And I have heard many a times that he suggests the other party is uninformed and they need to do a bit of reading. At some point some comedian in Nepal made a satirical piece with repeated use of "tapai padhera aaunus please".

So what do you think, is it ok to say during the argument, that the other party is uninformed? Or do you simply make your argument and leave the "stupidity" on the other side as is?

E-sim or physical sim variant ?

I'm planning to buy a new iPhone, and I've noticed that many variants available in the market are eSIM-only, while others support both physical SIM and eSIM.

For those of you using eSIM in Nepal, especially with NTC or Ncell, how has your experience been so far?

  • Is the network coverage and signal strength the same as with a physical SIM?
  • Have you experienced any issues with calls, mobile data, or OTP messages?
  • Is activating or transferring an eSIM to a new phone easy, or does it require visiting a service center?
  • What happens if your phone gets damaged or you need to switch phones temporarily?
  • Are there any other disadvantages to using eSIM in Nepal?

I'd really appreciate hearing about your actual experiences, particularly if you've been using an eSIM for a while.

Help/सहयोग Mechanical engineer offered an accountant role at a dairy factory. Should I take it?

I'm a mechanical engineering graduate. My neighbour has started a dairy factory in partnership, with an investment of around NPR 2+ crore. They've asked me to take over as their accountant.

I only have basic accounting knowledge, picked up from project engineering and management courses during my degree. I have no formal accounting training or work experience in the field.

Should I accept the offer? What risks should I consider, and what should I do to prepare if I take it?

Any advice, especially from people with accounting or small-business experience, would be appreciated. Thank you!

Ncell 4G Data Pack Speed is 1.8Kbps! What are your experiences with data packs of our telecom providers?

This is the speed I get when I subscribed to a Ncell Data pack. And this is not when I am in some far flung village, but in Baluwatar. How is this acceptable?? And when I call them up, the solution is to turn off background data.

Will India go into a state of emergency? And how will it impact nepal?

Looking at the current conditions it is highly likely that India might enter a state of emergency very soon. There's definitely vote theft going on there which is favouring the ruling party, there's no doubt about that since BJP is hellbent on defending the election commission despite it being an independent body. They even stopped people from protesting and were detaining people for no reason. The government only has two options left, either make Gyanesh Kumar resign or declare an emergency. The latter seems more likely given the BJP government as making GK resign would be them admitting guilt.

Given these conditions I have a feeling that Nepal is gonna be a battleground for Indian opposition just like how during the democracy movement all the nepali politicians fled to Bihar and UP when Mahendra banned all the political parties. This might bring a shift in Nepali politics too as Indian influence will rise because of it. What do you guys think?

Nepalese grandparents don't express themselves much

They don't talk much about their inner things, like their childhood, their childhood dreams, their emotions, etc. I have closely observed these things and it makes me sad that they don't know how to openly express their inner thoughts and feelings to their loved ones or grandchildren. Maybe no one taught them how to? Or maybe they don't want to talk about it? Maybe they are full of regrets? I don't know

I want to ask them a lot of questions, but just like them, I don't know how to ask them. Maybe I'm just like them too

Politics/राजनीति India is no longer managing a small set of elite interlocutors amenable to bilateral pressure or economic signalling.

The post-2007 UNMIN-era template of elite bargaining under Indian mediation has been superseded by a youth-driven realignment that New Delhi did not fully anticipate. The RSP’s near-supermajority government derives legitimacy from a domestic Gen-Z mandate rather than external patronage. India’s traditional instruments (open border, Madhesi interlocutors, cultural affinity) retain structural weight but face reduced effectiveness against a post-deference government. The prior toolkit is less effective against a government whose legitimacy rests on rejecting external patronage.

The Eastern Himalayan borderland has entered a post-UNMIN, post-elite-bargain phase. India’s structural position remains strong; its ability to adapt instruments to a youth-mandated, post-deference government in Kathmandu and to manage the dual-track tension between official neutrality and organisational Hindutva activity will determine outcomes over the next five years.

Help/सहयोग Startup looking for someone to run our socials before it dies of loneliness - REMOTE/PAID

ok so here’s the situation.

we’re 4 engineers and zero marketers, and we need help, fr.

what you’d actually be doing:

  • making and posting content on LinkedIn, X and Insta (memes, carousels, threads, whatever works)
  • cold emails and DMs to people who might want what we’re building
  • figuring out who our customers even are
  • running our marketing plan, or telling us it’s mid and fixing it
  • coming up with ways to get more customers and followers without being cringe about it

you might be a fit if:

  • you’re chronically online and you know why some posts hit and some flop
  • you can write like a human, not like a LinkedIn guru who “learned 7 lessons from his dog”
  • cold-messaging strangers doesn’t make you want to throw your phone
  • you use AI tools to work faster but you don’t just copy-paste ChatGPT slop
  • bonus if you know anything about startups or tech (not required, we’ll teach you)

what you get:

  • NPR 15,000/month (That's the most I can do atm, but at least you won't have to wait 3 months for it, as I'll pay from my pocket, no HR or Finance dept)
  • [hours: ~ 3-4 hrs/day, flexible]
  • fully remote
  • real ownership: you’re not “the social media intern,” you’re basically our entire marketing department
  • a front-row seat to an early-stage startup trying to make it

To apply: DM me with:

  1. a quick intro (2-3 lines max, no essays pls)
  2. something you’ve posted or made that you’re proud of
  3. your most unhinged-but-would-actually-work idea for growing a brand from zero 🔥

best idea gets bonus points. no CV needed unless you really want to send one.

The rise of cafe and clothing store startup culture in Nepal

Recently, I'm seeing young people opening cafes and clothing stores everywhere, especially Gen Z. I mean, it's not a bad thing, but I have two questions:

  1. Is there still a market for these businesses?

  2. What are some alternative startup ideas similar to cafes and clothing stores? Like foreigners haru kya cool way ma small stores run garirako hunxan ni, tehi way ma

I'm asking because I think I want to start one of these businesses or something different on my own. I'm just bored

Rant/गुनासो How do I help my 25 year old brother get his life together?

My brother is 25 and spends almost all day lying in bed reading novels. He doesn't work, barely goes out and doesn't seem concerned about his future.

My mom treats him very gently and never questions him because she's afraid he might go into depression if anyone says anything to him.

I understand mental health matters, but it's genuinely sad watching him spend his life like this. I'm not even expecting him to get a job immediately. I just want him to go outside, meet people, experience life, and find something to look forward to.

I don't know if he's struggling mentally or has simply gotten too comfortable living this way. I want to help, but he's an adult, and I can't force him to change.

How do you help someone who doesn't seem interested in helping themselves

Is anyone here interested in learning Nepali? Genuinely curious if there’s demand.

Hey everyone!

I’ve been wondering about something lately. I’ve heard from a few people that learning Nepali can be pretty difficult, not necessarily because of the language itself, but because there aren’t that many good resources available, especially when it comes to practicing with native speakers.

I’m from Nepal, and that got me thinking.

What if there was a simple way to connect people who want to learn Nepali with native Nepali speakers who could actually teach them?

Nothing overly complicated or expensive. Just real people helping you learn the language through conversations, structured lessons, or whatever works best for you, for a small fee.

But before putting any time into building something like this, I wanted to ask this community:

Is there actually any demand for learning Nepali?

Would you personally be interested in something like this? Or do you know people who are trying to learn Nepali but struggling to find good resources?

I’m not selling anything or promoting a service. This is just an idea at this point, and I’m genuinely trying to understand whether it would be useful to anyone.

Even if you’re not interested, I’d love to hear your thoughts. And if you’ve tried learning Nepali before, I’d be really curious to know what challenges you faced.

Thanks!

AI generated posts Everywhere

Is it just me or does everybody notice the same generic AI generated social media post from all businesses? Every single graphics is so obvious it's from AI.

I get that AI has made the process of creating the posts super easy which used to cost time and money for these businesses. But as a consumer we see the same exact format everywhere.

My mom dad's feed is full of AI content, IDK if they can even differentiate if it's real or not.And the obvious brain rot animated talking animal, vegetables.

Done with this.
