Technology/प्रविधि We made a free Nepali speech-to-text model. Can you help us test it?

Disclosure: I'm one of the co-founders of Blackfire A.I., a small team in Lalitpur, and we built this.

We trained a model that turns spoken Nepali into Devanagari text, and we've released it for free for research, teaching and non-commercial use.

You can try it in your browser without installing anything. Open the link, click Runtime → Run all, then upload a voice note when it asks:

https://colab.research.google.com/github/BlackfireAI/nepali-asr-xlsr/blob/main/try_it_in_colab.ipynb

It's not perfect yet. It only understands Nepali, so English words in the middle of a sentence confuse it, and it writes numbers out as words. It also does better on clear speech than on noisy recordings.

What would really help: try it with normal everyday Nepali and reply here with what it got right and what it got wrong. Please don't upload private or sensitive recordings.

The model and code are on Hugging Face and GitHub under BlackfireAI if you want to look deeper.

Teaching for paramedical /nursing students by MBBS graduates in kathmandu

Do you guys know any nursing and paramedical colleges or institutes in Kathmandu where MBBS graduates can teach part-time. (Mbbs passed and 1 year MO done, meanwhile preparing for md exams) Does anyone know of any such places or have any contacts? If anyone knows of any colleges, institutes or training centres looking for part-time faculty or has any contacts or leads, I would be very grateful. Also, if you have any idea about the pay and whether they require a long-term commitment or contract.

Need genuine opinions from Renault Kwid/Kiger owners in Nepal

I'm considering buying a second-hand Renault Kwid or Kiger and would love some honest feedback from people who actually own or have owned these vehicles.

  1. How is the overall reliability and engine performance?

  2. How much do you spend on regular servicing and maintenance?

  3. Are spare parts easily available in Nepal and are they expensive?

  4. How is the ground clearance and performance on hilly roads and rough uneven roads?

  5. Have you faced any major problems after a few years of ownership?

I've heard people say that the Kwid has a plastic engine. Is there any truth to this or is it just a misconception?

Please share your genuine experience, including the drawbacks. I'm looking for honest opinions from actual owners.

Thanks in advance!

How to celebrate Dashain at a school

Hi I hope everyone is well, especially with the recent flooding. I work at an international school (adults) in Australia with many Nepali students and we are having a small Dashain celebration next week. So far all I have planned is making chakpate and possibly decorating paper kites to hang on the wall.

Is there anything else we could do? Some music perhaps? Any suggestions appreciated.

Travel/यात्रा Need opinions: arriving in Kathmandu then taking flight to Bharatpur shortly after

My flight lands in Kathmandu at 12:40 PM. From then I have to catch 2:50 PM flight to Bharatpur.

In this time, I will have to get off the plane, cross immigration, collect baggage, then move to the domestic terminal, check my baggage with Buddha airlines, and then board the plane to Bharatpur.

Is this possible to do, or will it be too challenging given the time? Also any tips or suggestions on how I can move more efficiently and quickly in the airport and get everything done properly with preparation?

Any help is appreciated, thank you

Politics/राजनीति How do people in Nepal actually view people from Darjeeling, Kalimpong and Sikkim?

Post image
125 Upvotes

Hey everyone, I wanted to ask something that's been on my mind for a while.

I'm from the Indian hills, and I've always been curious about how people in Nepal view those of us living in Darjeeling, Kalimpong and Sikkim.

We share the Nepali language, culture, festivals and a lot of history, but we're Indian citizens, and many of us identify as Gorkhas or Indian Nepalis.

Whenever I come across Instagram reels about Gorkhaland, I often see arguments between people from Nepal and people from the Indian hills. Sometimes people start calling us by names like “dh*ti” and other insults, and the discussion turns into a fight instead of an actual conversation. Obviously, Instagram comments don't represent everyone, but seeing this repeatedly has made me wonder what people genuinely think about us.

I also know that the word “Gorkha” is a sensitive topic for some people, and that opinions on the Gorkhaland movement differ. I'm not expecting everyone to agree with the demand, but I'd like to understand why it creates such strong reactions.

So, to people from Nepal:

How do you actually view people from Darjeeling, Kalimpong and Sikkim?

Do you see us as part of the same broader cultural community, even though we're Indian citizens?

What do you think about us identifying as Gorkhas? Why does the term bother some people?

How do you see the Gorkhaland movement? Do you understand the reasons people support it, even if you disagree with it?

And honestly, why do you think discussions about this sometimes turn so hostile online?

I'm not posting this to start a fight or claim that everyone from Nepal thinks the same way. I genuinely want to hear different perspectives because I'd rather understand what people think than keep making assumptions based on Instagram comments.

You can disagree with us. I'm just interested in having an honest conversation without insulting each other over our identities.

Travel/यात्रा 19, considering my first big trip: 3 weeks in Nepal and the Annapurna Circuit. Is it worth it?

Hey everyone, I’m planning my first big Asia trip after finishing school. It’s a big decision for me, so I’d love to hear some other people’s opinions before I commit.

The plan:

  • About 3 weeks in Nepal starting in June 2027, through a Worldpackers host in Kathmandu
  • Part of the stay is volunteering with the host, and they’ve offered to arrange the Annapurna Circuit for me
  • The trek: 12 days with a private guide, starting from Chame, $750 including guide, permits, meals and transport

About me: 19 by then, I work out regularly and have done multiple 40 to 70 km hikes here at home, though on flat ground. This would be my first multi-day trek, and my only mountain experience so far is Giewont in Tatras, which is only just a day hike. I do videography and photography, so I’d be shooting a lot along the way. That's also the skill I'm trading in exchange for accommodation and food with the host while staying with them.

What I’d love your input on:

  • Is the circuit realistic and safe for someone my age and experience level, going solo with a guide?
  • How serious is the altitude risk crossing Thorong La as a first-timer, and how should I prepare?
  • Anyone trekked it in June? How were the weather and trail conditions? Host says it doesn't get too rainy there these days.
  • Any safety tips for Nepal in general as a young solo traveler?
  • Anything you wish you’d known before going?
  • And just any other recommendations or ideas you might have!

Thanks in advance!

Help/सहयोग Need help with data entry job

Hi admin, please delete this post if it is not appropriate for this group.

Hi all,

I have a small project for which I am looking for someone interested in doing data entry. I will be honest: I only have a budget of Nrs.15K to 20K. This is not continuous work. If you work daily, the overall data entry should be completed in 1 week. If you work slowly, it should be completed in 2 weeks. All you need is a laptop and a good Wi-Fi connection.

If you are interested in the data entry job, please fill out this form. https://forms.gle/24pbcTxGTtJgVXB79

I will prepare a contract with you and pay you as you finish the job. I could make multiple payments as each part of the project is completed. I would like to discuss this further over a Zoom call rather than here. Simply fill out the Google Form here.
