****URGENT FOSTER NEEDED**** Los Angeles Ca

-Great Pyrenees- The owner has locked him out of the property and won't let him back in. He just stays outside of the property and isn't getting food or water unless somebody brings it to him. He's apparently very friendly.

All he wants to do is go home and he's not allowed to and apparently somebody went and knocked on the door to tell him his dog was out there and he said it's not my dog anymore and I don't want him. So he's been living in the alleyway almost 2 months.

Discussion Why invest resources in problematic dogs?

This post is not intended to be inflammatory but rather to be an honest discussion where I can hopefully learn a differing point of view.

Reddit has been pushing a lot of posts and subs on my feed about dogs that need to be rescued before euthanasia. Inevitably, every single one of these dogs is a pitbull mix with a bite history and dog and/or child aggression. Many of the posts on each thread exclaim that the dog must be saved and what a sweet baby it is.

This has left me confused because I don’t understand this perspective. There is a finite amount of resources available to invest in a never ending supply of dogs that need to be rescued. Should the resources not be prioritized to the vast amount of shelter dogs without severe behavioral issues? What good does it do to rehome a traumatized and aggressive pitbull when there are countless others that could take its spot and not be a bite risk?

In one especially extreme post, the dog that needed to be rescued had a history of killing another dog but the posters insisted it could still be a good pet for the right owner. Perhaps that is true, but that same owner could adopt a dog that is in the shelter and has not killed another animal.

For those on the other side of the table, can you explain the ideology of investing resources into saving aggressive and dangerous dogs?

Discussion Newest foster dog needs a name

Her rescue name was Corina, she was adopted 7 months ago (they named her Remi) and returned today. I was her previous foster and I took her back. I will likely adopt her as well. I want a funny name for her. She was brought to Miami Dade animal services, she has no eyes due to previous emergency surgeries.

Discussion I’ve Tried Everything

Update on the dogs that are evacuated in West Texas. I’ve contacted the local Sheriff, Animal Control, the THLN, PETA, and the sheriff department has seen these dogs in person with their own eyes. The department is claiming these dogs are not malnourished, however would need to go to the vet if they were to be seized, implying that they’re ill and skinny. I have emailed the THLN about our law enforcement taking a class to earn a TCOLE credit and learn more about animal welfare, but this matter cannot wait, these dogs are dying!!! I am calling the Game Warden today to see if they can assist in any capacity. We also have people calling the sheriff consistently to try to persuade them. Thanks for reading. If you have any advice, please let me know. I did email and call each link and phone number listed in my previous post. I am only posting the update here because it seems that my updates are not being seen on the post and I keep getting similar suggestions. I need new options to try to save these babies.

Discussion What is the purpose of mislabeling breeds?

Post image
210 Upvotes

Browsing petfinder for a springer and found this… I get it. Some breeds are harder to get adopted, but how is this helpful? At best people just assume the rescue made a mistake and at worst someone thinks they are getting a bird/working dog and end up with an animal they can’t handle because they don’t understand the animal’s needs.

Discussion Scared abandoned dog, worth helping?

We have a park by our house where people very often dump dogs. Over the last 4 years of living here me and my partner have rescued, rehabbed and rehoused 6 dogs from this park, all dumped, some severely sick but saved. However - none aggressive.

Today I was at the park with my dog and saw a (very clearly) dumped young pitbull mom, it was clear she had given birth recently. She is very skinny and her tail is tucked between her legs. I tie my dog to a pole further away and approach her slowly and she shrinks. I bend down to her level and she lets me pet the top of her head, but when I stand back up she growls and lunges. I scream and back away. She backs away. It was absolutely scary. I get in my car. But I still sense she needs at least some food and water.

I go back to my house down the street grab her a cup of food and water. I drive back, place them both outside my car, all while not leaving my vehicle. She slowly approaches with caution and eats and drinks. She seems a little more open, but still, tail between her legs and jumpy. Shortly after a couple walking their dogs approach and say the dog has been there for a few days, that she had a puppy tied to the pole with her that animal control took, but that they couldn’t capture the mom.

My question - is the behavior she displayed earlier (growling and lunging) too dangerous to engage with any further? Ideally I would take her home, feed her and eventually try to rehome her (what we’ve done with every other dumped dog). But now I’m pretty freaked out and not sure I’m equipped to handle that behavior.

Discussion Why shouldn't violent dogs be BE'd?

I'd like to hear what people against behavioral euthanasia think. So many posts on various shelter dog subreddits are advocating for a dog with a record of violence to be saved from BE. Why use your time, effort, and resources on dogs who are not adoptable for the average family, when there is an unlimited amount of homeless dogs that would be? Why promote a violent dog to possible adopters that could put them in danger?

Discussion The pitbull question

A few days ago, I made a post to inquire about the perspectives of those that believe in investing resources into aggressive/bite risk dogs. The post got a lot of responses and I learned some perspectives from the other side of the viewpoint. Eventually, though, the responses became focused on the tangential issue of Pitbulls. In the hopes of having a similarly engaging conversation, I wanted to make a separate post.

The specific questions that I’m interested to hear from the dog rescue community: - Why are pitbulls and pit mixes the majority type of dog that fills the shelters? - why are pitbulls and pit mixes seemingly the majority of behavioral problem dogs? - and perhaps the nucleus of the question: do the problem dogs have these issues because they are pitbulls? - should there be more stringent regulations on pitbull adoption and lower threshold for behavioral euthanasia? - is there a place in society for dogs from fighting bloodlines?

While I am not involved in dog rescue, I am involved in dog sports and I’m generally interested in canine topics. But my opinion on rescues and pitbulls is admittedly uninformed. That said, I’ll provide my thoughts:

I think the over representation of pitbulls in shelters is due to primarily social reasons and the relationship between pitbull ownership, socio economic disenfranchisement and the effect on responsible ownership. I do think that pitbulls are inherently more likely to seriously bite given their history as fighting dogs and breeding for gameness, however, I also think that there are a lot of pitbull and pit mixes that are extremely detached from their gamebred ancestors. Additionally, I think a lot of “bully” mixes nowadays really aren’t pitbulls.

I am curious to hear from more experienced people in the rescue industry who agree and disagree.

Discussion I have adopted a senior Belgian Malinois from a shelter.

He was on the red list. He’s been at the shelter for the past three months and needed to be adopted by the 4th of August; otherwise, he would be put to sleep.

The girl who helped us was surprised that we chose him. He’s estimated to be 11 years old, and he’s missing some teeth. It breaks my heart to see the number of dogs that are on the red list with a deadline date.

I asked the girl what happens when that day comes, and she said they are put to sleep.

I was originally planning to foster Shaq until he found a home because I wanted to help other dogs. However, the girl who helped us said that because of his age, he was only available for adoption, and I went for it.

I didn’t get to bring him home today because he needs to be neutered. I’ll be waiting for the call to go pick him up sometime this coming week. I can’t wait.

He looked so devastated. Even the shelter worker was surprised that we picked him. She thought he wasn’t going to find a home.

When we went into the kennels, he was just lying down. When we approached, he only raised his head, looked at us for a second, and then laid it back down. It broke my heart. It looked like he had given up trying to find a home. He just wanted to be left alone.

We were waiting for a worker to come talk to us, and when he saw her talking to us and pointing at him, he immediately got up. My guess is that he couldn’t believe he was actually being considered for adoption. She took him out, we met him, and he was the sweetest boy ever. He was shining and full of energy.

The only thing I didn’t like was that we were originally told we could take him home the same day. Unfortunately, he has to stay at the shelter to be neutered. I’ll be waiting for the call this coming week to go pick him up. I really didn’t like leaving him there because he’s probably very depressed right now, thinking that nobody wants him.

It’s truly heartbreaking to see the number of animals at the shelter on the at-risk list with deadline dates.

Please visit your local shelters, raise awareness about irresponsible breeding, and adopt if you can. I wish I could help more. I’ve volunteered at my local shelter for their Dog Day Out program on my days off, taking dogs that have been stuck in kennels for days without being able to go for a walk. Volunteer, adopt, and help these poor animals.

Here’s a picture of Shaq, a Belgian Malinois. I know they require a tremendous amount of exercise, but if anyone has experience with this breed, I would greatly appreciate any tips you can offer.

Discussion Rescue Paws is a fraudulent company and needs to be stopped

Thumbnail

This fraudulent company states that "Every Item Helps Us Provide 10 Meals to Abandoned Dogs" They’ve made over approximately $4 million pushing the lie. I don't believe they've given any of their profit towards helping dogs whatsoever. I fell for one of their ads and made a purchase thinking it would go to help some dogs get fed (I know I should have checked them out before making a purchase but it was late and I was so tired, wasn't thinking) Then I started digging and the more I found, the clearer it became that this company is not legitimate.

I’ve attached my research so please look at the images attached. This kind of scam is disgusting, especially at this scale. They’re raking in millions because no one is holding them accountable. They should be sued and forced to refund every single customer they misled. The fact that that customers money could've gone to a legitimate company and actually helped poor animals makes me so angry.

I know this kind of thing with fake businesses happens all the time, and people usually shrug it off as “just another shady company.” But if we actually look at the real numbers and do the math on how much they’re making, it’s hard to ignore. What can we do to stop letting people get away with this?

EDIT REGARDING THE AI PAGE: I'm aware the AI page doesn't mean much, those images could be real or fake, who knows where they were sourced (or supposedly taken) since it doesn't say anything like that, so I don't think that page adds so much to this claim. I mainly wanted to share that story because it doesn't make sense -- Like what young guy is going to sneak around at night, masked, to steal dog feeding tubes off the side of a building? And how come the feeding tubes aren't mentioned anywhere else on their website or show up in any other image?

Discussion Pregnant in the shelter

Scrolling through this sub I see multiple dogs in urgent need of saving, but they're pregnant with no plan to spay abort. I don't get it. The evidence for shelters overflowing with unwanted dogs is literally **right there.** Why contribute to the problem? Why not work towards preventing the problem rather than postponing it in the 11th hour?

Discussion I think alot of people like the idea of adopting a dog more than actually doing it

I'm starting to think a lot of people love the idea of adopting but not the reality.
Everyone says the want to 'adopt not shop' but when it comes down to it, they want :

perfectly trained

no behavioural issues,

good with kids, dogs, cats

low maintenance

...which basically rules out a huge number of dogs that actually need homes.

I've also seen genuinely lovely dogs get completely ignored because they don't look a certain way.

Genuinely curious what people prioritise most when getting a dog ?

Discussion No one is adopting. Tips?

I have a small rescue in El Paso, TX where we focus on saving dogs that are dumped out in the desert. It's just me and sometimes my husband. We are fairly small and just had our rescue anniversary so we are not very known and it seems like the people in my city are not very welcoming to newbies.

I currently have 18 dogs under my care. Some (puppies) were supposed to be taken by other rescues but they bailed so they stayed in my rescue.

I've posted my dogs on social media, gone to adoption events but no one wants to adopt them and I'm not adopting out feral dogs or anything like that.. These are social, crate and house trained pups that are pretty cute.

I see rescues in my city get their dogs adopted super fast so I'm unsure what I'm doing wrong. I know times are tough but literally 0 of my dogs are being adopted.

What has worked for you all to help with adoptions? Is there a certain type of language on social media posts that helps people adopt? Certain types of pictures? Do you all organize your own adoption events in business parking lots?

Please share any tips! I welcome all of them :)

Discussion "Over 600 dog collars hanging up in the barn"

This is an ongoing investigation in Humboldt County, over Shannon Miranda of Miranda's rescue.

Just last year he took in nearly 900 dogs. Received money for them. Some were transfers from out of state and different counties.

The Humboldt County Sheriff's along with the FBI, Veterinarians were out exhuming dogs Miranda shot and put into a mass grave. He lied. He took the money, so much that he bought a mansion in Vegas, had a house in Hawaii (it is rumored his husband since sold it though.)

Look into this. And ask questions before taking the most innocent to a place they may be given a bullet in their head for a profit.

Discussion Cost of adoption based on breed

Is it normal for rescues to change/increase the price of a dog for adoption, based on its breed? And whether or not it’s “more desirable”? And a better question… is that ethical? I didn’t think rescues would run that way.. but I was faced with that situation recently.

I applied for a dog that does international adoption, this particular dog was from Mexico. All the research I’ve done, it is more typical for those types of rescues to have higher fees due to the transportation.. but they were telling me that based on her breed and the interest the had in her — her adoption fee will be $1800 USD or nearly $2500 CAD.

I nearly fell out of my chair when I read that. That is more than the cost of many registered breeders I have been looking at (for comparison).

Discussion Mourning the dog I wish I had

Almost a month ago I got a 2 year old border collie mix. She was a rescue and I wasn’t told how deeply fearful she is. I was only told she’s hesitant at first with strangers and what we’re experiencing is much deeper than that. I did a ton of research on the breed and expected a dog that had very high energy that I could take for long walks and keep me active. I pretty much got the opposite of that. She’s terrified of her harness and leash and pees if I even bring them out. She will only go in our backyard for potty and otherwise sleeps. She gets excited and plays in the evenings when everyone’s home but otherwise seems scared, unhappy and tired the rest of the time. I can’t help but feel lied to and disappointed by the outcome and I’m struggling to bond with her because she doesn’t do anything. She’s too scared to train 99% of the time and even when the trainer came over she just hid in the corner. I realize there’s a 3/3/3 rules but unfortunately she’s gotten worse in a lot of ways. I know I need to adjust my expectations but I feel emotionally drained and stir crazy because leaving the house causes her anxiety but staying isn’t better either. I’m not going to rehome her, I just feel deeply sad and wanted a place to vent.

Discussion I want to rescue this dog but feel like I can’t get her.

Post image

⸻

I really want to rescue this dog, but I’m not sure if I can take her right now. She’s a 2-year-old pit bully mix, super sweet, but I feel kind of held back. I’ve never owned a dog before, always seen in movies how good they are and friends families I love them. so I’d love some advice from people who have.

If I do end up getting her, the first thing I want to do is take her to the vet for a full checkup. She looks dirty, (though bandana) and honestly, I don’t think she’s ever been taken to one. The only problem is that this month’s been rough financially, and I don’t really have the funds at the moment.

What do you guys think?

Hello,

This sweet boy was found in LA near Echo Park by u/FancyJackalope. They unfortunately can't keep him.

There is a rescue interested in helping him but they need a foster / pledges. They really need pledges / donations as they are also looking at taking in a and 3 of her puppies**.

We are really hoping to keep that guy out of the shelter system as we all know how they handle things.

Discussion Why are the only choices euthanize or Surender your dog if you can’t afford an emergency?

So I’ve been thinking about getting another dog and want to adopt this time. But i want a specific breed and in my state local rescues source out any pure bred dogs that aren’t pit bulls. So it’s a lot more expensive and hard to get any other breed due to the rescues requirements and high adoption fees compared to shelters. As i was reading descriptions a lot of the dogs at one rescue were surrendered due to the previous owner not being able to afford a super expensive emergency but also not wanting the dog euthanized so the vet gives them the option to surrender the dog to an affiliated rescue.

I understand everyone says “if you can’t afford an emergency you shouldn’t have a dog” but that feels so classist. And financial situations can change no matter how much we prepare. I just can’t help but think how sad it is having to give up a part of your family just for them to receive the medical care they need. And as an adopter that makes me so sad. Especially with all the people complaining about how many dogs need homes. wouldn’t raising funds to pay for these surgeries be much better in the long run then paying for a dogs day to day care to stay with a foster family for who knows how long?

Discussion I Did Not Expect This So Soon…

Post image
260 Upvotes

We’ve said yes to every animal we could. Every stray left behind. Every orphaned litter. Every injured dog with nowhere else to go. And if you’ve followed our journey, you know this isn’t just rescue work—it’s personal.

You might remember King, the puppy who barely survived after being found with his siblings in a heartbreaking situation… With your help, we saved him. That moment changed everything. It proved what could be done when people care enough to step in- and it became the spark that lit the fire behind what we do today.

That’s when Juno’s Journey Home Foundation was born- named in honor of Juno, our beloved rescue dog who passed away at 13 years old earlier this year. Juno came to us after surviving severe abuse when I was barely learning to drive a car… She had every reason to give up on people, but she didn’t. Instead, she became our guardian and the heart of our home.

Juno helped raise orphaned kittens and puppies as if they were her own. She was gentle, patient, protective—everything a mother should be. Her love shaped our rescue work from the very beginning. And though she’s gone, her spirit is still here. Everything we’re building is inspired by her.

Today, we’re caring for as many animals as we safely can. Every dog and cat we take in is housed and cared for directly by us. But we’ve reached our limit. The space is just too small for the number of animals who need help, and financially we keep hitting walls.

That’s why we’ve officially begun the process of becoming a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. Our paperwork is in motion, and we expect full approval by April 2026. At that point, donations will be tax-deductible. We want to be transparent: they are not tax-deductible yet.

While we are patiently waiting on that next step of becoming an official 501(c)(3), we’re also trying to save toward a larger property; One that would let us help more animals, offer sufficient space, and create something lasting in Juno’s honor. But to do that, we need to preserve every dollar we can.

So we’re asking for donated supplies—not money. These supplies allow us to keep going without dipping into the funds we’re saving for growth.

If you’re able to donate supplies or want to meet our adoptable animals, please reach out.

Thank you for remembering King, for honoring Juno’s legacy, and for believing in what we’re building—one life at a time. I wish I could tell the whole world how amazing each individual one of you have been to us.

— Sher Juno’s Journey Home Foundation

(Juno is the gorgeous dog in the photo. This shoot was taken just a week before she unexpectedly passed due to a stroke…)

There are lots of options on our list! Do not feel obligated to buy anything specifically, just what your heart desires! We have some puppy food and lots of wet food still on hand!
