Discussion I wanted to love this show, but... Spoiler
I'm simply not a fan of the many lore changes it makes to the series or the new backstories it provides for the characters. I know this series is technically set in alternate universe, but it's a little harder to accept when it goes out of its way to recreate locations and moments from the 1980 film, as well as implement numerous characters from it.
For starters, I absolutely loved how Barry and Claudette's death scene was perfectly recreated in Episode 5, down to the dialogue and camera work... only for the last-minute reveal that Grace actually stabbed them while high on acid. To me, this was done for the sole purpose of subverting audience expectations rather than complimenting the story. The fact that Grace almost completely disappears after this event only confirms this notion for me.
But more importantly, Jason being turned into an actual superhuman through some company conspiracy so people can survive nuclear fallout just felt unnecessary and silly to me...and not in a fun way. Jason's backstory has always been highly effective in its simplicity. He was a deformed boy who was shunned by everyone around him except his mom, so that when he disappeared in Crystal Lake, he decided to live alone in the woods, feeling that he would never fit into society and that his mom would be better off without him. However, Jason couldn't have been more wrong because his mom completely loses her mind after her son's "death" and goes on a vengeful killing spree. Only after his mom is finally killed by one of her intended victims does Jason become the rageful killing machine we all know and love.
Taking this straightforward backstory and turning it into some grand conspiracy with chemical and radiation experiments in an attempt to create superhumans just comes off as needlessly complicated imo. In Parts 2-4, Jason was human. An abnormally strong, durable human, but human all the same. It's only after he is killed off in Part 4 and resurrected Frankenstein-style in Part 6 does Jason actually become superhuman and immortal. Making him superhuman and immortal from the start just feels, yet again, unnecessary.
I also don't like how Jason was already brutally killing people long before Pamela died. I've always liked that Jason was essentially a harmless hermit who kept to himself until his mom dying sent him over the edge. Making him a killer so early on honestly makes Jason less interesting to me.
I know a lot of people really liked this show and I'm happy for you. As a hardcore fan of this franchise and these characters, I desperately wanted to love Crystal Lake (especially after the 17-year drought we've been in), but the new story directions just didn't click for me. I'll admit that this is a well-made TV show with good performances, fun characters and memorable moments, but I don't think it quite comes together as a Friday the 13th prequel or reimagining.
