Post-Op Constipation Survival Guide

So, I know people generally don't like to talk about this part of the surgery, but it is important that we do.

Opioids and pain medication dehydrate you and make it really hard for your body to get waste out, and I have a few tips for anyone(you don't have to comment, but I also don't want you to feel embarassed.) It is extremely common to have problems going to the bathroom after surgery and it can be quite painful.

It's hard to get the proper fiber and nutrients after a surgery like this, but here are some tips, because staying regular is important for your health. Struggling to go is extremely common after surgery.

Here's some links and tips:

https://www.webmd.com/digestive-disorders/constipation-after-surgery#:~:text=Add%20fiber.&text=Foods%20such%20as%20bran%2C%20beans,made%20with%20fruits%20and%20vegetables.

1. Nutrition

So, this one doesn't completely apply because after a surgery like the one you have all had; grains, rice, beans, and collard greens will not be good for your mouth holes.

My suggestion: Get smoothies with fiber. A smoothie with some spinach and non-acidic fruits should be a good start, eat it with a spoon(not a straw!)

Eat some apple, prune, sweet potato, etc baby foods or blended foods to add some fiber to your diet.

Do not drink caffeine, it dehydrates you. (This includes tea, coffee, and even chocolate. Your black tea bags to stop bleeding are fine for use.)

2. Keep moving!

I know that walking around and being active is very difficult, so please don't overdo it. But getting up and walking a little bit here and there can help your blood flow and help your GI tract keep moving. Again, don't do too much, as it will raise your blood pressure and hurt your face. Sitting up every so often and doing small, short walks down a hallway can be helpful to help your body get your colon more active.

3. Medication

If you are having pains due to not being able to go, consider some medication with laxative effects. This includes something like miralax, or other medications that could draw water into your colon or help soften your stool.

If you take anything for stool softening/laxative, PLEASE drink a lot of water! Double what the bottle says over the hour after you take it. The more water in your system, the better your body will function and the better the medication will work.

(Disclaimer: If you are in horrible pain and are unable to eat due to stomach pains and not just due to mouth pain, go to a doctor and have them help you. Not everything is treatable at home.

Disclaimer#2: If you have Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Chrons, or any other kind of GI-related illness, TALK TO A DOCTOR BEFORE YOU TAKE MEDICATION. Laxatives can rupture your colon if you have a GI related illness!)

Take care of yourselves. I wish you all a healthy recovery and easy bathroom breaks.

Dry Socket - Need to Knows

1.6k Upvotes

There seems to be a lot of interest and concern with regard to dry sockets on this Reddit. Unfortunately there seems to be a lot of confusion about it also. So how about we clarify the situation a little bit. Dry socket is not diagnosed by the appearance of your healing socket. It's very difficult to look at a socket and tell whether or not dry socket is a concern. Dry socket is diagnosed via the symptoms. It is quite painful, sometimes very painful. It's more common with lower molars rather than upper. It's more common with women. Older people get it more than younger people. It tends to appear somewhere around 4 to 10 days post op, after your extraction. It is not a concern in the first 2 to 3 days post-op. Smoking or vaping is a huge risk factor for dry socket. People that avoid smoking and keep their mouths super clean with brushing flossing and syringing have a very low risk of getting a dry socket. It always heals on its own. It's just annoying and painful while it heals. Time is always on your side. I hope this short post clarifies some of the misconceptions about a dry socket.

Socket reopening eight months later???

My wisdom teeth were removed in February. They healed up well enough. Now it’s October, and one side has split open. What do I do? I can’t go to the dentist/oral surgeon until June. Food gets trapped, and I can’t have this turn into an infection because I will not under any circumstances go to ER or Urgent Care.

Feels like I bit into cold ice cream but won’t go away (coronectomy)

• Upvotes

I’m on day 5 following a coronectomy. Days 1-3 were very uncomfortable but tolerable with medication. Starting day 4 I developed extreme sensitivity to cold to the point where cool room temp water is painful to sip. And outside of eating or drinking it just feels like I bit into cold ice cream with my lower back tooth except that sensation won’t go away. It’s quite painful. Is this normal? I’m on antibiotics and steroids but expected the pain to ease up not get worse. My swelling is very minimal at this point. I’m worried something serious is wrong or that I have permanent nerve damage.

Am I weak?

Today is day 6 after my surgical wisdom tooth extraction, and I feel like the pain just isn’t getting any better. Yesterday, I cried through lunch because of how much it hurt (I only had some lukewarm soup). Painkillers aren’t helping at all. I can’t do anything, I can’t concentrate. I’m so fed up with this. I’m also a little disappointed in myself because I thought I’d be able to handle the pain much better.
My dentist told me that the worst pain would be on days 2–3 and that it should get better after that, but honestly, I feel like it’s even worse now, or at least the pain has completely plateaued. When is this finally going to get better?

bad pain on day 7

woke up in god awful pain going into my throat and into my head today, morning of day 7. i was completely fine yesterday and actually felt awesome but i tried to go back to work and quickly had to leave early due to growing discomfort. went home, took my painkillers again which really didn’t do a lot for it, then i wake up this morning in awful pain. i call my after-hours surgeon number and they call me back, i tell them this and they tell me that i should just rinse it, take more pills, call again tomorrow. i feel as though this is a lot more urgent and im not sure if i should wait until tomorrow. there is a dentist office near me that has weekend hours and responds well to emergencies, should i try and go there today or just wait til tomorrow like they told me? i called my surgeons office twice in excruciating pain and really got no comfort 😭

tldr: woke up day 7 in excruciating pain, called after hours surgeon and they told me to call back tomorrow, should i go to emergency dentist office today instead?

Is this dry socket? Please help I am freaking out. My molar was surgically removed Thursday and today is Sunday. Pain wasn’t too bad and out of no where tonight I started getting pain and a lump under my ear/neck next to jaw. Out of no where. I started tasting funny taste in my mouth. The socket isn’t painful at all. I rince after every meal and drink with antiseptic mouth was and taking antibiotics. Everything I looked up said the lymph node swollen is the first sign. I tried getting a photo of the tooth and the hole is huge and can’t see a clot :( I am petrified. Does it look like I may have dry socket?

Blood clot shifted and part of it is surrounding neighboring tooth?

Post image

I still see a small clot on my stitches but it seems some of the clot has slid down. I did get PRF treatment on this tooth but there is jelly like blood just kind of sitting around the neighboring tooth. Should I try to rinse it off? Or just leave it alone. I’m on day 2 of recovery.

Can I safely drink alcohol two nights before getting my wisdom teeth out?

My surgery is scheduled for November 2nd but I realized I’ll have Halloween plans where I’d probably have a few drinks. I know you’re not supposed to smoke before but the surgeon didn’t mention anything about alcohol. Would this be safe?

day 7 i simultaneously regret and don’t regret getting my extraction

pic for context i guess? but i had my lower left wisdom removed last saturday, it sucked. i wasn’t expecting to have it done right then and there, but they said it was urgent and best to do it that day, blasé blasé. i was awake for it, which sucked because the whole reason i didn’t have it extracted years ago was due to my anxiety around it, i got stabbed in the tongue by one of the instruments used, which hurt! and for some reason afterwards, there was a mix up at the pharmacy and it took 4 hours to get my ibuprofen, and the one i had at home wasn’t touching the pain at all, so i cried for 2 hours while in blinding pain. all of that was kind of unnecessary for my question, but i needed to rant lowkey… anyways, i was wondering how long it took everyone to feel normal again, being able to eat normally, chew normally, etc, etc… im scared i’ll never feel the same, so im sort of regretful, but i also know things would be worse if i ever removed it so fuck it we ball

Need Advice

I got 4 wisdom teeth extracted on October 8th so that puts me on day 10 of recovery as of writing this. I am still in a lot of pain. My pain has not gotten worse but it also doesn’t feel like it’s improving and I’m still on a heavy pain medicine schedule. My mouth seems to be recovering fine as there was no physical indicators of infection and I seem to be healing fine. Should I still be worried? For context I had 4 wisdom teeth extracted on the same day and they were all impacted. My top two were growing very close to my sinuses while my bottom two were very close to my nerve endings in my bottom lip. Please help I haven’t had good sleep since my surgery 😭

hi! I had all four of my wisdom teeth removed yesterday in the morning. I have like the worst dental anxiety ever, but it went by fast and easy.
i was only bleeding a lot when i got home, got it to stop. And ive been prescribed pain medicine and antibiotics, as well as peridex mouth wash. I have a little swelling and tenderness. i just want to make sure this looks okay for day 2. I’ve been so careful of doing everything right, that if something were to go wrong id be in distress. left pic is my right side, it was partially erupted. and the right pic is my left side and was horizontally impacted(they had to cut through gums) any advice would be helpful :)

I miss smoking

Day 9 recovery. Feel fine my jaw doesn’t feel tight anymore, maybe lightly sometimes but nothing to be concerned about. Stitches still dissolving. Doing my salt water rinses but honestly I’ve just been sending it and eating the foods I want to again (not anything too crunchy though).

I. Miss. Smoking. Been hitting a vape every now and then and I’ll have one drag of a ciggie if I feel cheeky. But do you reckon I can just go ahead?

I got all 4 of my wisdom teeth extracted on Thursday so I am 2 days post-op. The pain today was unbearable but thankfully it subsided as the day went on. I remember going into the doctor’s appt and thinking they wouldn’t be that serious just to be encountered by THAT… lol!! Hopefully I heal fast because I don’t know how much longer I can live as a squirrel

Is it serious

I dont feel anything now but recently it has partially erupted an edge and im scared if that means the first half of the crown has pushed into the tooth in front of it so that the one edge had erupted. The dentist didnt say anything bout it but told me to brush it clean as possible

Question whether I need to take my wisdom teeth out

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hi I am in my 20s and I have been into 2 dentist and they have said different things so I wanted to see what other dentist have to say. I am getting braces next month as well. But basically I am wondering if I should get my wisdom teeth out or not I have so much anxiety over it. One dentist told me I would need to while I went to another and they said I don’t need to unless it cause my pain or any issue which I don’t think I have. What are your professional opinions? Also I wanted to mention I have a small mouth if that has any impact

Tough Procedure

Hi all, new here & wanted to share my story and see if anyone had similar. 36/F

I got my upper right wisdom tooth pulled yesterday With help of nitrous. It had not erupted at all and was in my sinus cavity. The procedure took two attempts and resulted in more of a manual removal I’m told. My OS said they had to remove quite a lot of bone to get it out and that my face would likely bruise and swelll up to my eye. This was physically a very tough thing to go through.

I am on a soft food diet/sipping water and resting. I just started a Z pack today as well. Has anyone ever gone through this? I’ve had all the others removed but never this severe of procedure And not sure what to think about the bone aspect. What is my recovery going to be like honestly? This is the most pain I’ve ever been in my whole life. My eye/ears/jaw, everything is so sore.

i am using arnica gel for swelling/bruising. As well as hydrocodone/tylenol and I have a muscle relaxer for my TMD. 😔

Unbearable pain

My wisdom teeth were all erupted and literally took 10 minutes to take out. I had zero complications and no complex placement. They told me it would be a really easy recovery but I am suffering. I'm taking the maximum amount of painkillers, including opioids, I was allowed to and it's still unbearable. My head hurts, I'm getting migraines, my sinuses hurt, my jaw is stiff and painful. It's been 2 days and I've just been rotting and sleeping. I want it to stop so bad. I feel somewhat lied to because everyone else who had a simple extraction like me had next to no pain. I'm just ranting but I am just suffering.
