One random day.....

Husband: what happened to the nightstand?????

Wife: oh that, I always thought it was ugly and gotten a replacement

Husband: .........….........

Based on real life stories where wife or husband thrown away their hidden stash furniture and had to search for it at the dumpster or rubbish chute.

u/unclestickles 1d ago

A fellow I worked with had a coworker who was demolishing drywall in a house. While smashing out the ceiling a box fell out and almost him in the head. It had close to 100k in it. Turns out the house was owned by a guy who had a bakery, and I guess stashed cash up there to avoid paying taxes. He never told anyone I guess and developed Alzheimer's. The kid turned in the money to the owner, and after that they had security guards watching the demolition crew's every move.

429

u/ECNguy 1d ago

That's crazy. He hid 90k in the ceiling to avoid taxes. That's smart your friend turned it in.

272

u/EconomyMongoose7994 1d ago

Amazing to just stash 80k like that and literally forget about it. I wonder what he planned to do with it

171

u/ChellyTheKid 1d ago

It's funny 70k really isn't that much money, very easy to spend it. Just like lottery winners if you don't know what you're doing it will gone before you know it.

113

u/SweetLemonPopsicle 1d ago

Yeah, I mean 60k isn't as much money as it used to be. Times have changed so much from when he first hid that.

101

u/cautioussidekick 1d ago

Yeah big rats in the roof. $50k would go a long way towards pest control

79

u/SpecsOnThe_Beach 1d ago

$40,000 wouldn't even get you a new roof

75

u/pineappleshaked 1d ago

$30,000 may not be worth to demolish one wall

35

u/Icy_Skin_6352 1d ago

30k is not that much lol

63

u/Armadillo_Dear 1d ago

Let’s be honest in 2026 how far is 20k even gonna get you? A used 2023 Honda accord?

Wonder how much they had to spend on that security lol

6

u/Mystery_Member 19h ago

People who lived through The Depression or heard about it as children where the banks literally locked the doors and failed learned that cash is king. Always had some stashed for emergencies.

Spongebob throwing away Mr Krabs shitty mattress not knowing that's where Mr Krabs hid all his money

78

u/Jezirath 1d ago

Who the hell throws away a piece of furniture without telling their spouse?

172

u/Inevitable_Shift1365 1d ago

Found the guy who has never been married

48

u/sora5634 1d ago

Nah, that’s just straight up stupid. Its a shared home and you do not just straight up throw away things without informing the other. Im married and its common sense to ask first.

6

u/TiredWiredAndHired 1d ago

Yeah, unless something is completely 100% mine I won't throw it away without at least asking my wife.

18

u/2052JCDenton 1d ago

Wife tells husband, "That piece of furniture is ugly, I'm going to toss it and get a new one." Husband replies "Yeah, just don't do it yet, I need to clean it out." Two weeks later: "You cleaned that thing out yet?" "Not yet, I'm still working on other stuff." Three weeks later: "Clean that thing out because I'm going to toss it next week." "Yeah yeah I'll do it." Four weeks later: "YOU DID WHAT??!!?!?!?!"

6

u/sora5634 1d ago

Still not a reason. In this scenario i would force them to clean it out the day i would need to toss it. Gave them enough time

2

u/2052JCDenton 1d ago

Had this happen to me (though on a lesser scale). Got a deadline, agreed to the deadline, missed the deadline. Real world hurts sometimes.

5

u/justastackofpancakes 17h ago

I think you missed the whole "without telling your spouse" qualifier. You gave an example scenario where the fault lies entirely in the husband's laziness since the wife DID bring it up to the husband, multiple times even.

u/isolatedheathen 1d ago

Yeah I ask my wife before I toss a rusty spoon and she's going to ask me before she tosses even a random screw because we know how each other feel about these things a whole ass piece of furniture is an in-depth discussion about could it go to another room then can we use it in the garage then maybe sell it finally as a last resort I get to break it down and toss it!

8

u/General-Yinobi 1d ago

You jest, but this is the correct way, if i am going to throw a bunch of rust stuff, i collect them and put them in a box or bag or w/e, and have them take a look before we throw them away.

There is almost always some benefit that can be extracted from old stuff before throwing them away, my closer friend is a handyman, i always give them the stuff i am gonna throw to take a look at, most of the times they extract materials &/or spare parts from them.

6

u/isolatedheathen 1d ago

I promise no jest here all seriousness and yeah the reason I break down the end pieces is for the sweet sweet extraction of last valuables

13

u/Jezirath 1d ago

One day my ex came home with two guys who picked up the couch and left with it. Turns out they were the new neighbors. She offered to them because I " said I was gonna buy a new one ".

The truth was maybe a week before I had remarked how I liked the style of some random couch on T.V.

Who the hell keeps a stash of cash hidden from their spouse? lol

→ More replies (3)

1

u/coffee_warden 18h ago

My wife will sort of do this. Ill just come home to find it in the garage for me to take out to the garbage.

5

u/homelessbunt 1d ago

I worked for 1-800GOTJUNK in California. Last job of the day another crew did a garage clean out for this woman. They picked everything up, took the loaded truck back to the lot and left it overnight to take it to the dump in the morning.

The next day the husband called, frantic and asking if we by any chance still had the water cooler his wife told us to take. It was still in the back of the truck so he came and picked it up.

Turns out he stashed 150K in cash inside the water cooler.

2

u/LetmeSeeyourSquanch 10h ago

Who's getting a hidden compartment drawer and not telling their spouse about it? Lol

2

u/ScooterTheBot 10h ago

Holy shit this happened to my mom. Grandma hid all her gold jewelery in the mattress. When she died, dad threw it out. When mom came home and told dad they freaked the heck out and went back for it but by then it was long gone

7

u/Invisible_Target 22h ago

If you’re partner has a secret stash that you don’t even know about, you have some serious relationship problems

3

u/Timely_Mention8535 21h ago

Wrong... the element of surprise can exist, like, putting money aside for a vacation.

2

u/mnttu 18h ago

Why do you need to hide cash in a secret compartment for a vacation instead of just having it on a bank account?

This reminds me of the time where rent was due and I just did not have the money for it. I didn't know what happened, I budgeted and did everything right but for some reason, I was like $1000 short.

As I was packing my shit, ready for the inevitable eviction, I found like $1500 cash in my nightstand. I forgot that I had pulled out rent already and kept it somewhere "safe"

132

u/SorryManNo 1d ago

Safe and secure, even from yourself.

48

u/mat477 1d ago

To be fair that guy is always spending money on stupid shit

26

u/Joker-Smurf 21h ago

I used to stash birthday money in my books. Then completely forget about it.

Years later I’d be reading a book and bam, here’s $50. Or here’s $100.

There is a non-zero chance that there is still money stashed amongst the pages. I did check them all, though not overly thoroughly.

A couple of years ago, tired of having to keep packing them up everytime we moved house (due to lease ending and rent increasing), I drove the books 1000km away to my parent’s house. My niece and nephews now have their own library.

(I did tell them that there may be money in some of the books, and to please let me know if they find any)

4

u/Middle-Luck-997 19h ago

Holy crap. I used to the same thing when I was a teenager.

Except I’d forget which books I kept the money in.

And it would take me forever to find the hidden bills again. 😂

2

u/26_paperclips 17h ago

I never hid the money but i have used cash as a bookmark. Its a good motivator to finish thebooks since it means youll get your money back

12

I would assume this is just a magnet. I have child proof locks like this on my cabinets so my pets can't open them.

38

u/Mr_Plow_420 1d ago

takes the entire nightstand

23

u/VII_OF_IX 1d ago

Why aren’t there keys on top when it throws it in there and then suddenly, two magnet keys when he goes to lock it?

4

u/DeltaBlast 19h ago

Because of compression. If you pause, you can kinda make out the keys when going in.

It's probably homebrew, but honestly there are plenty of Bluetooth locks out there. Just find some furniture like that where you can hide one. A few screws and a drill bit and you're set. You can probably even have it unlock with your cell phone or something.

If you hide your money like this, also get a safe that is light enough to be carried but hard to open, throw in some bolts and old paper so that it sounds something is in there, and only secure it poorly to the wall and make it easily discoverable. A thief would think the valuables are in there, steal the safe with the worthless content and stop searching for a stash like that.
