PSA: REPORT ALL AI DO NOT INTERACT

I just removed a graphically violent AI slop video involving a fake cocktoo being murdered. I expect this to happen again.

THEY AREN'T REAL.

PLEASE for the love of all that's good, if you run into a violent or suspected AI slop post, DO NOT INTERACT WITH IT. Report it. Report it. JUST REPORT IT.

Do NOT give it engagement, do not try to talk to the person, YOU CAN'T CONVINCE PEOPLE NOT TO DO THIS. For these kinds of posts, any engagement is considered good engagement. Even downvoting and condemnation is engagement. DO NOT.

Let your mod team handle this.

Rule 1: Be civil and respectful. What does that really mean?

Hello /r/parrots community! It’s your friendly neighborhood mod team here.

This sub doesn’t have too many rules, but perhaps the most important is to be civil and respectful towards others. We do not tolerate rudeness or personal attacks, regardless of context. You may ask why we take this rule so seriously.

While it’s never a bad idea to just generally be nice, we also have this rule for a very important reason: to help people take better care of their birds. How, you may ask? We strive very hard to keep this community a place where people feel comfortable asking questions so they can receive feedback.

We recognize that people feel very strongly about parrot husbandry, and that seeing birds in conditions that are not ideal can be difficult, but we also know that making attacks or being snarky doesn’t help anyone. Instead, it makes people defensive or nervous to ask questions. When we fail to foster a community where people can look for advice, the parrots lose. Every time.

Our general rule of thumb is this: you shouldn’t say anything online that you wouldn’t say in person to someone you know. Remember that there is a human on the other end of the exchange you’re having. If you’re disagreeing with them, be constructive and kind. Give the sort of advice you’d like to receive. Remember that you may be talking to people in tough situations, or a kid, or someone who has been given outdated information.

Very importantly, if someone violates this rule in their response to you, do not respond in kind. Instead, please report the comment.

That report button is one of the most important tools we have as a community! We check threads all the time, but with a constant stream of new content, it’s always possible for us to miss something.

We ask that you please hit that report button if you believe someone is violating the rules. The moderators review each and every post or comment that gets reported, and we will take action as appropriate. You can also reach our team via modmail if you have an issue.

We appreciate your help keeping the subreddit friendly and welcoming. We are grateful to everyone who contributes their time and experience to help people learn about parrots, to everyone who asks for help when they need advice, and to the folks who share their wonderful birds with us!

All the best,

The /r/parrots mods

She seems fine and is calming down but I'm not. Everytime this happens I never find out what caused her to freak.

The cage in the first two pictures is her transport cage. She can make a very realistic kissy noise when the mood takes her.

I have learned to think of parrots as cats with feathers. I consider this the equivalent of a cat lying on someone's hands while they're using a laptop. Our girl Mayna loves to sit on our index fingers and watching what happens at the monitors. My man's index finger is already pretty buffed, I am getting used to it.

How do we feel about powdered egg mix (or something) for parrots?

Post image
6 Upvotes

I’ve included an image to get an idea of what I’m talking about. Does anyone have any negative or positive opinions on including some of this mix with pellets as a nutritional support? I found some at my local parrot store and I was curious if it was marketing or had any tangible evidence for being beneficial in a parrot’s diet. I know parrots enjoy eating bland eggs here and there for protein but I wonder if including this would cause more harm than good.

I wish I knew her as an egg

Every time I look at this little lady or scratch her head my chest feels warm and I grind my teeth. She says, "I love you" and "come 'ere!" to me all day long and it melts my heart. Does she know what she's saying? I'd imagine the phrase "I love you" is attached to our sweet moments, so maybe she associates it with good feelings. I miss her when I lay in bed at night and feel the same warm feeling scrolling thru pics and vids of her on my phone. She is my first bird after a life so far of cat and dog ownership and it's a totally different feeling for me. Although caring for a parrot is very demanding, I enjoy doing it and look forward to our years to come. I wish I could have seen her in her egg lol 🥚 I would sit on it and keep it warm. LOL. Ok too far I'll stop now. She will be 1 next month. 🥳

Hahn’s macaw vs caique (or eventually both?)

I’ve had my heart set on a Hahn’s macaw, but I’ve been really interested in caiques too and could see myself having both down the road. For people who own either or both (understanding that all birds are unique individuals) what is your experiences with either and which do you prefer?

This little guy got trapped in my balcony

We managed to catch him and after making sure he is well I want to release it or find a home for him

Im not sure if it is wild and can be released directly to nature or if it needs a family to take care of it.

This is what's going on every night when it's time to get her inside for a night. Eventually she goes in, but first she has to make a good show.

Toys

What are the best toys I can get on Amazon? The other day, I ordered some cardboard rings, but they smelled really strange (like chemicals), so I ended up throwing them away. I really like getting hanging skewers and then adding shreddable items like Chinese finger traps. I am in high school, so for the most part I’ve had to find the cheapest items my parents are willing to buy, but I got a job this year and I finally have some money to spend on some higher quality toys! I am always worried that the cheap items have some sort of residue or chemicals that aren’t good for my birds.

Plateaued with taming new bird, advice on how to proceed?

Birb tax above!

I got my new cockatiel, Zuko, 3 weeks ago. He is a roughly 4-5 month old male.

He came from a household with little kids and was pretty skittish. I assume the kids probably pushed beyond his boundaries sometimes. When my hand entered the cage to change his food or water, he fluttered around and ran away as fast as he could.

I slowly worked with him and gradually started gaining his trust. He eats millet when I hold it no problem, and he will step up if I hold a millet behind my finger as well.

However, when my hand enters the cage without millet, he still runs or inches away in spite of having sat on my finger several times. As soon as the millet disappears, he also instantly steps off my finger. He will stick his head through my fingers and walk under my hand to get to millet, but when the millet is gone, he moves away.

It's not as bad as it was before, but I'm not sure how I can make him more receptive towards my hand even with no millet present. I have tried clicker training (clicking when he doesn't move away / moves slightly towards it) and then rewarding him with a millet bite, but that doesn't seem to work as well as I hoped.

Does anyone have advice? He has made a lot of progress but not sure how to go from there.

For context I already have a tame female who is EXTREMELY tame, she is a velcro bird, but the things that worked with her only partially work with this little guy and I'm stumped.

Is this cruel ?

For context I am in Scotland in a busy built up street. I noticed in the summer my neighbour wheels their parrot out the front of their house and leaves it in the cage for hours on end and it sounds very distressed. I have just noticed they've done the same today when it's currently 8 degrees outside, is this safe for the bird ? Not to mention the countless seagulls, cats and dogs that live in the area which could pose a threat.

Eye issue

Hi everyone. Our Tweetie has had an eye issue for a few weeks now, she keeps closing it and I believe it’s starting to become cloudy in colour. Unfortunately Tweetie has never been handled and attempting to catch Tweetie is incredibly distressing - so we haven’t been able to take her to the vet. Any ideas? She is otherwise very happy, eating and her normal self.
