Just Chatting I find it funny how people react when they realize my stepmother is on my mom’s side.

2.7k Upvotes

One time, I was talking to a friend, and she said, “It’s nice that your mom is so close to your stepmom. Since they spend so much time together, your mom must be more mature about talking to your dad’s new partner.”

I told her that she was actually my stepmom because she’s with my mom. She was SHOCKED and laughed nervously LMAOOOO. I’m not embarrassed about it, but I guess I should be a little more specific next time.

Questions Why do people say “on accident” now?

This has been driving me nuts for years lol. I keep seeing/hearing people say things like “I did this on accident.”

At first I thought it was just something the younger generations are saying…for some reason. But I’ve noticed my fellow millennials saying it as well.

Am I crazy or did we used to say “by accident?” As in- “it happened by accident.”

When did everyone decide to start saying “on?” And why?

What piece of pop culture was SO popular that you genuinely had to be there to understand it?

I was thinking about how every generation has that one cultural moment that practically took over the world.

Whether it was everyone obsessing over Pokémon GO, the absolute madness surrounding Twilight, the Harry Potter series, thats now being rebooted, Beyoncé dropping an album without warning or the entire internet losing its mind over Avengers Endgame.

I genuinely wonder whether social media has made these moments even bigger or whether having so much entertainment available has made it harder for anything to feel universally iconic anymore especially with all the spoilers now.

Life Stories I cried while doing laundry and honestly that's peak adulthood

Have you ever been so done with life that you started crying while doing the most mundane shit imaginable?

I genuinely had a moment where I was crying while doing laundry 😭

Like damn, bro, I'm really out here fighting for my life AND making sure my clothes are clean for tomorrow HAHAHAHA.

Adult life is actually insane.

Just Chatting Do people actually enjoy hot and humid weather? Like, genuinely enjoy it?

I moved to Houston, Texas, five years ago, and while I love many things about living here, the weather has never been one of them. I honestly thought everyone just tolerated the heat and humidity because they had no choice.
But today, I told my neighbor how nice it finally feels outside at 67°F (19°C), and he said it was TOO COLD!
Even more shocking? Several coworkers agreed! They said they actually love the heat and humidity and don’t mind 90°F (32°C) days at all.
Now I’m genuinely curious. I’m not asking whether you’d rather have heat than freezing temperatures or snow. I actually love having four seasons and snow but don’t love a lack of sun or extremely harsh winter. I lived in Michigan for five years and those winters were ROUGH.

Do you genuinely enjoy being outside when it’s hot and humid? Not just tolerate it, but actually LIKE it? And if so, WHY?
Because apparently I’ve spent five years thinking we were all suffering together. 😂

I ordered an item, got a charged, and they just shipped it.

I ordered an item back in May. It was supposed to have an 8w lead time. I emailed the company asking for updates. At first they told me they didn't find the order, then they stopped responding. I never got a receipt either.

So i did a charge back on my credit card after 10 weeks. Then i realized i ordered it using my other email and i did have a receipt all along. But their customer service sucked so i was glad to no longer be a customer.

They just shipped the item out this week. 5 months after originally ordering it. I got my money back. The item is worth just over $500, made to order and fits a specific vehicle.

What should i do?

Just Chatting Is it weird to sanitize your groceries after returning home from the store?

You know how a lot of people sanitize their hands after shopping at the grocery store (especially after covid).

I'm just wondering do people go the extra mile and sanitize the groceries too? Or is that a form of OCD?

For example: boxes of cereal, milk cartons, soda boxes, etc.

I mean other people are grabbing these items in the store and putting them back on the shelf. Same with the work stocking the item. Hard to know if the items are clean.

Just Chatting i just caught myself apologizing to a spoon

i took a long nap this afternoon and woke up feeling kind of foggy, like my brain was still deciding if it wanted to be awake. i went to the kitchen for water and dropped my spoon on the floor. without thinking i said sorry to it, picked it up, and rinsed it off like it was an actual person who might be offended. it took me a second to realize what i had done and laugh at myself. guess my sleepy brain needed someone to talk to, even if it was just a piece of silverware. anyone else catch themselves being weirdly polite to objects after a nap?

I look at random, completely uninteresting spots in the middle of nowhere and think about the history of a pole or a shed.

When I'm driving between cities and there's almost nothing out there, just power lines, tiny old abandoned structures, and stuff like that. It's completely uninteresting, but I end up thinking: when was this fence driven into the ground? The guy who built it probably doesn't even remember doing it, but I'd walk up to him and say, «Good day! Remember when you put up this fence in the middle of nowhere many years ago?» and he'd be like, «Huh? What? I don't remember, who cares?»

Or this abandoned shed, whose is it?

'Hello, ma'am, did your great-grandfather own this shed?'
'I don't know, maybe?'
'Do you happen to know why it's just sitting there empty?'
'No, who knows? You're weird.'

Yeah, I am weird, but what else am I supposed to think about during a boring drive?

What have you done today so far?

• Upvotes

Today after waking up, I had some Count Chocoula which I only recently had for the first time in my life (honestly, I'm not a fan of chocolate cereal but it has a sort of hot chocolate feel which I appreciate), went to work, then went to see my mom for a bit and we just spent 3 hours talking about whatever random things came to mind. Now I'm just sitting on a rocking chair with a blanket scrolling Reddit.

I plan to do some drawings later today, probably after supper.

Music I got a message request on Instagram today and I thought it was spam. But it was someone that heard my song and said he loved it!

• Upvotes

I really thought it was a weird person writing to me in German and mentioning a street in Berlin. I decided to ask if we knew each other and he told me he would walk Schönhauser Allee listening to my song!

I never got a text like that before and for what it’s worth I never really thought about having my song resonate with someone I don’t know like that.

So I’m not really surrounded by friends and family where I can share this and I decided to share with you because I’m super happy about it! Made my day

Life Stories I dreamt that I had a beautiful daughter, and I really wish she was real

I just dreamt that I had a daughter. I found her abandoned in the street all by herself. She was 12, and her name was Hailey. She had curly blonde hair and she was really sweet. I took her back home and made sure she ate, showered, and went to bed on time. I was sewing a quilted pillow for her, and I asked her if she wanted to spend time in my room and talk for a while. I told her I go to bed at 10, and she said she’d be up later than that. Since I hadn’t enrolled her in school yet, I said I was ok with that as long as she only stayed up for an hour or two longer. Then I woke up. I know she wasn’t real, but I miss her a lot. I just kept checking on her to make sure she was ok, and she was acting kind of annoyed by how much I cared. I loved that part of it. I’ve dreamt about being a mother many times, but nothing like this. It really stuck with me. I’m only 20 right now, so that dream will hopefully become a reality someday.

Thoughts & Ideas Does anyone else feel like weekends have become recovery days instead of actual days off?

1.5k Upvotes

I remember when weekends used to feel like a little vacation.
Now Friday comes around and I’m exhausted. Saturday disappears between laundry, groceries, cleaning, and all the things I didn’t have time to do during the week.
Then Sunday arrives and half the day is spent mentally preparing for Monday.
It’s weird because technically I have free time, but somehow it never feels like enough to actually enjoy anything.
And when I finally get a few hours to myself, sometimes all I want to do is absolutely nothing.
I miss having a weekend where I could wake up without a plan and just enjoy the day.
Anyone else feel like their days off are mostly spent recovering from their working days?

Just Chatting Dude. I’m humiliated

• Upvotes

I just accidentally left my underwear in a pile of clothes I gave to Uptown Cheapskate to sort through! I didn’t know it was there! Oh my god I don’t even know what to think right now what if they remember my face when I go back in another time?? And they were all rude teenagers who were already giving me the harshest side eye for taking so long with my friend to browse even though we weren’t loud, and put everything we didn’t want back. I’m just humiliated is all.

Has anyone else done this? Any similar stories at all?

Life Stories Old college friend sent me a photo from seven years ago and nothing else

A couple of weeks ago I came into my office and the frame on my desk had a photo on it I did not put there. I said "what" out loud. It was me and my friend (I will call him K) sitting on the pizza box, junior year I think, and I do not remember that night at all.

K and I lived across the hall from each other for three years and extend all day about nothing, we never had to make plans because he was always there. He go a job two states away after we graduated and I honestly could not tell you when we stopped talking every day. All we did for about a year was like each other's stories, and I take like four days to answer a text, so most of that is my fault.

He had a work thing near me in April so he stayed on my couch one night. It was nice. A little awkward though, we mostly talked about jobs and his new apartment and that kind of thing. Before he left he said we should do this more, and then something like "I am going to send you the worst photos I have of you." I thought that was funny and added him to the Times frame. Then I did not message him once for like six months, he did not send anything either, and I forgot he could even do that.

When the photo showed up I asked him where he found it, and he said his phone pulled it up, one of those 7 years ago today things, and also that I look terrible in it. I think he was doing the worst photos thing, and it is not even that bad of a photo. I had "hey" typed out him the week before and then deleted it because it felt weird out of nowhere. We texted for about an hour and near the end he wrote "we are so bad at this" and we said we would call on Sunday.

He pushed the call to the next Sunday an hour before, and then I forgot that one because I was at my parents'. Is there some trick to keeping it going after you get an old friend back like this? I might try calling him on some random weeknight and see if he picks up.

Pets & Animals A wholesome little update about a street dog I’ve been feeding

• Upvotes

For almost a week now, I’ve been feeding a local street dog every day. Now, whenever I step out of my building, she comes running up to meet me all happy!

I also noticed that I’m not the only one — other people in the neighborhood have been feeding her too. It really warms my heart to know there are so many good people around.

Just wanted to share a bit of good news with you all! :)

Thoughts & Ideas Anyone else ever just sit in their car for a few extra minutes after getting home?

I pull into the driveway, turn the engine off, and then just… stay there. Not scrolling or anything. Just sitting. Sometimes with the radio still on low.

It’s the only quiet in-between space that still feels like it belongs to me. Once I walk through the door the day starts again in a different way.

Does anyone else do this or is it just a me thing?

Music My friend always orders coffee drinks and barely drinks them

• Upvotes

This is silly and really doesn't matter lol but it's so puzzling to me.

Everytime we go to lunch she orders an iced coffee drink (that has milk) or a smoothie. And almost always drinks it soooo slow. I'm surprised if she makes it halfway through the drink. These drinks are like $8 too, I guess I'm cheap. Then she also proceeds to keep it for like 2-3 hrs sometimes and even take it home and these drinks always have dairy in them.

One time I brought her a thai iced tea to a fair she was selling her baked goods at. I don't know if she even touched it, I even was like isn't that going to get warm? and she just shrugged. Three hours later when she was packing up she packs up the food I brought her and the Thai iced tea. I dunno I'm gonna assume she's just throwing this stuff away at home to be polite. I would not be drinkin that after 3 hrs. I've even seen her take home what has to be a melted smoothie.

It's not really a big deal lol it just makes me scratch my head like why is she always ordering this stuff and carrying these melted drinks around? I find it weird. She's a great friend and it really doesnt effect our friendship or anything but reddits the place to anonymously scratch my head about it.

It must feel so good

Sitting on my balcony with a cup of coffee, watching the rain pour down. Couples are still heading out for Garba events in their beautiful dresses. 😊❤️

I’m single, and honestly, I don’t even know if I want a relationship. It’s complicated, anyway.

But watching these people, seeing them happy, enjoying their lives, and having a partner to share these little moments with, makes me feel something. There’s something so beautiful about it. Having someone to go out with, to enjoy the rain, to dress up for an event, or simply to spend time together. It must feel so good. ❤️
