Last year I worked at a hotel for about eight months, and my shifts were completely random.
I really mean random. There was no pattern to them at all. I didn't work nights, but apart from that, I never knew when I would start, when I would finish, or which days I would have off. Every Friday I had to wait for the schedule for the following week, and basically anything could be on it.
I took the bus to work. After a while, I started noticing the same woman getting on the bus.
She would usually get on about two stops after mine. She wasn't a coworker, and she wasn't going to the hotel. She would just get on, stay on the bus after I got off, and continue wherever she was going.
The weird thing is that I kept seeing her.
Not occasionally. A lot. Like, almost every time.
At first I didn't think much of it. But eventually I started wondering how it was even possible. My schedule was supposedly completely unpredictable. I didn't have fixed working hours or fixed days off. Yet somehow, this woman and I kept ending up on the same bus.
I also used to see her on the way home in the evening.
One day I finished work and was walking to the bus stop, but I got there too late and missed the bus. So I had to wait for the next one.
I got on the next bus.
She was there.
That's when I started getting this really strange feeling about it.
I remember thinking: What if she's a bot?
You know how in video games there are characters walking around in the background so the world feels populated, but they're not actually other players? I started wondering if maybe she was something like that in my life. Just a character that was always somehow placed on my bus.
And then there's another part of the story that makes this even stranger.
During those eight months, I had to go to a physiotherapist for the first time. It was a place I'd never been to before, so I had to look up the address and figure out where to go.
I arrived at the physiotherapist's office.
And she was there.
The same woman from the bus.
She wasn't there to see the physiotherapist. She was waiting for a different doctor who was apparently also at the same place.
I remember the doctor coming out and talking to her. And this is another detail that stuck with me: she wasn't really answering the doctor. She was mostly just nodding her head.
I don't know if Italian was her first language, so maybe there was a completely normal explanation for that. I don't remember the conversation, so I don't want to make it into something it wasn't.
But seeing her there, in a place that had absolutely nothing to do with my work or my normal bus route, really freaked me out.
And then, at some point, I noticed she was wearing a T-shirt that said: "Lost in reality."
I know that's just a T-shirt. If I hadn't already been thinking about the whole situation, I probably wouldn't have given it a second thought.
But at the time, it felt almost ridiculous.
Eventually I stopped working at the hotel. And since then, I've never seen her again.
