A Helping Hand š Free Food/Laundry/Shower Resources in HRM - Oct. 2026
Hi all,
We have a lot of people in our community who are in need of a free meal or a helping hand occasionally.
We thought it would be nice to collect and post this information each month, which is graciously supplied by members of the Halifax Library. We'll see how long we can keep this going month to month.
The Dartmouth Calendar is back, but the Sackville one is a little low-res, apologies.
Please share as needed with people you know who need help or take advantage of them yourself if you are in need.
The Feed NS Find Food site is also a very useful resource:
https://feednovascotia.ca/find-food/
Always remember there are kind, generous folks out there looking to help you out and you can get through whatever you are going through. š
And if anyone else has resources that belong here, please attach them as comments, the more the merrier.
Thank you!

News, Weather & Politics Chief Terry Paul of Membertou plans ownership stake in Everwind data centre
A quote from Membertouās Chief Terry Paul in the Everwind release: āMembertou is proud to have a long established partnership with EverWind, sharing in ambitious development projects like those announced today. These projects define our nations and shape
our futures. Together, we continue to create new opportunities with strong Indigenous
participation and benefits.ā
We need a protest next in Membertou to send a message to Indigenous leaders.

News, Weather & Politics Sad news from JD Shore
facebook.comJulie Shore has died, they shared the news on Facebook this morning. Here's the body of the post, in case the link doesn't work.
"It is with broken hearts that we share the passing of Julie Diane Shore, our beloved Julie and the heart behind J.D. Shore.
Julieās name is on every bottle, but her legacy reaches far beyond what she created. It lives in the people she welcomed, the friendships she treasured, and the joy she brought to those around her. Her infectious smile, unmistakable laugh, and generous heart made people feel special.
Together, Julie and Arla built a dream rooted in family tradition, a love of the Maritimes, and a belief in bringing people together. We are so proud to be part of that dream.
For now, we ask that you please allow Arla and our team the time and space to grieve this enormous loss. Thank you for the amazing love and support you have shown us. It means more than we can put into words.
When we are ready, we will be back to carry Julieās legacy forward and share her spirit with the world.
With love and gratitude,
Arla and the J.D. Shore Team".

Food & Dining Seamus David's Pub DC Today @ 1:30 ish/2pm
If you were part of a group of four lumberjacky men having a little gabfest at Seamus David's this afternoon... thank you.
My husband and I were out for lunch, and you guys brought the entertainment. The workplace drama. Also the slightly nonsensical office hustle lingo that we thought was cringe, but felt like part of your elevated bro-talk.
It was like sitting through a private episode of Judge Judy.
Your new coworker DOES sound like a fuckin' moron.
Your boss shouldn't talk to any customers or workers. Facts.
We were going to buy you a round on our way out, but you were all finishing up.
We both left workplaces that were similar and we have zero work gossip anymore. Thanks for including us in yours.
All the best to you guys.

Arts & Recreation Call my Nocturne project!
Hey /r/halifax! I have a project at Nocturne called "Off The Hook". I have two phones installed on the Halifax boardwalk, and you can make them ring by calling in and talk to a stranger!
As our communication technology becomes more and more advanced, we're becoming more isolated and less connected with the people around us. Off The Hook gives you an opportunity to make a spontaneous connection with a stranger!
I canāt post phone numbers here, but you can read more about the project and find the phone number here: https://nocturnehalifax.ca/projects/2026/off-the-hook
The phones are live until midnight tonight! If you're coming to Nocturne, look for us at the Cable Wharf or the Cunard Public Space, and come answer some phone calls from redditors!

Arts & Recreation Nocturne tonight!
What's everyone looking forward to checking out this year? I haven't been for ages but think I'm finally ready to haul my toddler out tonight to check it out. I probably won't be able to take her out for more than 2 hours so I'm wondering if anyone could recommend a good area to stick to that's more on that family friendly side. I know the waterfront is usually a good spot but it can also be a bust and it's gonna be cold tonight lol.

Discussion Halifax Real Estate: From Buyerās Market to Boom and What Comes Next
I spent the week digging through 14 years of
stats on the market and wrote up what the data points to. A few things that stood out:
In 2015, Halifax had 12.8 months of inventory a deep buyer's market, average price $284K. By 2022 it hit $527K.
The 2020ā2022 boom essentially doubled prices in under a decade, and the floor never gave it back 2025 averaged $601K.
Right now: 1,660 active listings, -0.3% appreciation, 98.24% list-to-sale, 37 days on market. The mechanics are shifting back toward buyers for the first time since 2019.
One more finding from the recent CAP report: 83% of HRM residential properties are under capped assessments, leaving 17% carrying a disproportionate share of the tax burden. That's quietly shaping the market.
Curious how others are reading it. Does this match what you're seeing out there?

Happening Now Anti AI Datacenter "Protest"
Fully body edit:
What you see was taken shortly after 12:30.
Yes I was "late" to the protest. The reason I say "late" in quotations is due to the fact the protest moved. There was no communication or organization regarding these issues.
Myself and many others showed up "late" because we were not expecting the protest to move. The organizer did not post these moves anywhere.
There were 2 location changes over the course of the protest. Grand Parade and the Province House. Grand Parade from what I've seen had an incredible turn out, I ended up meeting up with the remaining crew outside PH which had about 30 peopleish hanging around.
I stayed until there were 4 of us left.
I make these complaints for the sole fact I care. A protest without organization or communication only causes active resistance to falter, together we are stronger than they are.

Driving & Transit North endās public transportation system
We all complain about Halifaxās buses being late or unreliable, but I donāt think I fully realized how inefficient the routes could be until I moved from one part of the city to another.
My main issue is getting from the far North End to other parts of Halifax and Dartmouth. For the majority of places I want to go, whether itās Dartmouth, Bayers Lake, or even parts of the West End, I often have to take TWO buses and sometimes travel south first, only to transfer to another bus that takes me back in the direction I actually want to go.
I understand that the South End and downtown are major destinations, and that Halifax Transit relies on central routes and transfer points. But surely there has to be a more efficient way to connect different parts of the city than making so many trips revolve around travelling along the peninsula first.
Wouldnāt more cross-town routes, better connections between neighbourhoods, or more direct routes to major destinations make sense? It feels like getting between different areas of the city can take unnecessarily long, even when the destinations donāt seem that far apart.
Iām genuinely curious to hear other peopleās perspectives. Is this a problem with how Halifax Transit is designed, or am I overlooking some routes or connections that could make these trips easier?
For those who regularly take the bus from the North End to other parts of the city, do you experience the same thing? And for those familiar with transit planning, why is the network structured this way?
Iād love to hear your thoughts!

Arts & Recreation Looking for writing groups, literary book clubs, philosophy groups
Hi! I just moved here, I'm a woman in my late 20s who loves writing and reading. I'm looking for writing groups, book clubs, or philosophy groups. For books, I usually like poetry, classic literature, psychology, philosophy, scientific or political books. Wondering if anyone knows of anything like this or would like to start one together :)
I tried searching the subreddit and I know there are other book clubs but I'm most interested in these specific genres.
