miscellaneous [Dark Trope] Implied child death

• Family Guy - In a deleted scene, Evil Stewie is shown entering the bully's house and giving him a noogie. It seems rather harmless until Stewie mentions "Why's his knuckle turning red?" Then screams of the bully are heard, implying that Evil Stewie noogied his head so hard it punched a hole through the bully's head.

• Old (2021) - In a deleted cold opening, a man is shown crawling and shouting for help in the aging island. What makes this more terrifying is that this person could originally have been a baby or child, it's implied since he's walking on all fours

Ellis White in Kane Pixels Backrooms series. Implied to have fallen to the Backrooms and most certainly did not survive.

Image is from episode Missing Persons.

174

u/Dare_Soft 19h ago

Oh could be worse,
He could have survived and now looks far worse than what captain Clark lookedZ

145

u/Spaghestis 18h ago

Capn Clark was a still life copy of human clark, Ellis is dead but could have a still life of himself wandering around the backrooms

32

u/MrGuirinious1237 13h ago

Damn, i wonder how a baby still life would even act. It probably can't walk, i guess.

8

u/Fancy_Elk565 9h ago

The poster says he’s two, so definitely walking and running. Probably he’d be a creepy little four legged-to-two legged little monster which is just my nightmare

The Irish immigrant kids in Titanic.

42

u/TeSKing 8h ago

There was an account from a survivor of the sinking who passed a mother playing the piano and singing to her young daughter in the 3rd Class dining saloon to keep her daughter calm, after the mother realized there was no chance for either of them surviving (or that the daughter couldn't survive, and the mother unwilling to live without her).

237

u/Dare_Soft 19h ago

Never forget the titanic was a tragedy because they didn’t follow ANY safety codes.

152

u/Sebastianlim 17h ago

In fairness, they WERE following the safety codes of the time.

The safety codes of the time were just shit and outdated.

27

u/COGspartaN7 12h ago

"... And by the fortieth day if the bird returneth with an olive branch then we eat the bird because he ate olives and will be tastier for it"

Are you using the Bible for modern ship safety proceedures?

"And Lo on the sixth day we eat the non believers."

46

u/HospitalLazy1880 19h ago

This was also back when the safety codes were optional.

40

u/jazzy3492 12h ago

They abided by every regulation they were supposed to, it's just that the regulations clearly weren't comprehensive enough, which is why many maritime safety laws changed after the Titanic disaster (eg, requiring enough lifeboats for everyone, requiring wireless communications to be turned on 24/7, etc).

59

u/Left1Brain 16h ago

She was built within safety regulations of the time and on the idea that help would never be too far away. Which that last point was almost true, but the captain of the SS Californian was a colossal cunt so it didn’t work out.

62

u/godkingnaoki 17h ago

That's wildly untrue. The Titanic was one of the safest built ships up to that point. It also had more lifeboats than was legally required.

18

u/Development-Feisty 15h ago

Actually the biggest problem was the life boats were being put down half empty, they didn’t really have any training and how to do an evacuation

37

u/RepresentativeMail10 15h ago

They had training, but the training was outdated, the idea behind a lifeboat back then wasn't that you would evacuate the whole ship at once, it was that you would ferry passengers between a rescue ship since usually the shipping lanes have a lot of ships in them. However, Titanic sailed right after a coal strike had ended, and the nearest ship, the Californian, never came

It also didn't help that passengers were very, very hesitant to get into the boats. I mean, if you were a passenger on the Titanic would you rather stay aboard the warm, lit up, very slowly sinking ship, or would you rather be put into a small boat and lowered into the dead of night knowing that just 5 years ago almost everyone in a lifeboat died aboard the SS Valencia?

Breaking Bad

Plane crash happens and part of the wreckage (a teddy bear that probably belonged to a child on board) falls into Walter White’s pool

830

u/LimeTunic 21h ago

Hmm this is an interesting example since later on in the series they show an actual child being killed on screen

23

u/jertsa_faijja 20h ago

Wait when

134

u/MingleLinx 20h ago

Season 5 there was a kid who saw Walt, Jessie, and Todd do the train heist. Todd shot him almost immediately

81

u/jimkbeesley 20h ago

There's also the kid who killed Combo being killed by 2 of Gus's men who Walter later runs over.

That Old scene sounds fucked up, they should have kept it.

That entire movie is just a deeply squandered premise. It should have had the tone of that deleted scene but I guess they thought it might be too fucked up for general audiences. Just forgettable. At least make something fucked up and memorable.

285

u/Reverend_Lazerface 18h ago

My dad is an animator who worked on that movie and he was really bummed about the reception it got. Fortunately I was able to explain to him that the part he worked on was one of the few parts that was well done and that people actually thought was pretty dope, the part where the woman with the bone disease is chasing the kids through the cave as her bones keep breaking and revealing.

170

u/DyingSunSeverian 18h ago

None of the problems with that movie lie in the set, visual effects, cinematography. The latter especially is often highlighted, even negative critics thought it looked the part.

But the storytelling just wasn’t there.

37

u/Punk_Boi4737 10h ago

aw. yea, that scene looked great! Your dad did a good job :)

13

Doesn't help that the acting in that movie was...just bad in my opinion

200

u/DyingSunSeverian 21h ago

The acting in that movie is uniquely terrible. Around its release I commented somewhere that it was like every actor involved gave career-worst performances, including fine actors like Rufus Sewell and Gael Garcia Bernal.

Shyamalan has never been a strong writer especially with dialogue but I think Old was meant to have a much more heightened style than a lot of his other films. But it just came across like everyone got 1 take and moved on, it was just all stilted, the delivery and the emotions too. Perhaps didn’t help it was filmed at the start of covid.

I should have loved that movie cause I actually like Shyamalan for the most part for his emphasis on strange shit, and as a huge Twilight Zone fan this has the perfect premise, but man is it a turd.

52

u/_LXIX_CDXX 20h ago

This describes nearly every movie Shyamalan has made

12

u/pbentham25 16h ago

“He’s made a good movie!” - Producer Guy

6

u/spiritbearr 11h ago

He now funds a chunk of his own movies and takes lower budgets to maintain creative control. This actually makes him really great at maintaining budgets while actually ensuring a level of profitability. His model is what everyone says studios should be doing.

Meanwhile he's getting every tax credit he can in Pennsylvania which are very limited so it fucks over any local aspiring filmmakers.

33

u/ErusTenebre 14h ago

Shyamalan's direction often seems to be "Act as flat as fucking possible. If you emote, I swear to god it better be sudden anger and then you go straight back to flat."

If you watch the movies that made his career they all have that in common and it seemingly gets worse the longer he's been doing this.

21

u/M1ck3yB1u 19h ago

Bad writing + bad dialogue. These actors were cooked on arrival.

77

u/Dear-Pomegranate4470 19h ago

I get so angry about that movie because there were clearly some fantastic ideas (to which the credit really belongs to the graphic novel it was based on). They just had no idea what to really do with any of them!

And they just. couldn't. help. but mess it up and add way, way too much stuff for shock value and cheap 'scares'. I'm so grumpy about it. I feel like it could have been a tragically beautiful, haunting movie about the acceptance of the inevitability of death.

43

u/DyingSunSeverian 19h ago

I didn’t even know it was based on a comic, now I have to check that out. Because the core concept can easily cover so many themes, not only the concept of life and death but childhood and how some people are forced into circumstances where they have to grow up a lot more quickly than others.

But the movie gives that surface-level treatment at best.

14

u/Killer_Moons 17h ago

The comic is awesome, def recommend

Funny to think they thought that scene was too fucked up and preferred showing us what it looked like to break your limbs every second and have them immediately heal in place

33

u/Some_Guava_9009 16h ago

That death genuinely made me feel sick for a moment

18

u/Terminal_Insomnia_ 17h ago

Honestly, I think this defines much of Shyamalan's career. I think most of his films have very interesting concepts that just cannot stick the execution. Some of my favorite movies of all time are his, and I even find some of his lesser films charming in their own way (I kinda liked Lady in the Water)

Honestly, if you’re going to pitch such a disturbing premise, at least commit to it instead of playing it safe A truly unsettling scene could’ve given that movie the lasting impact it was missing.

4

u/Suspicious-Ad-5946 14h ago

The graphic Novel “Sancastles” that its based on is much more harrowing in tone. It stayed with me for some time.

Similarly, Itachi Uchiha from Naruto during the Uchiha Massacre. There is an infamous fanart of this.

253

u/HospitalLazy1880 19h ago

From what i understand Itachi killed none of the children but the other guy did.

Itachi was trying to clear all the adults who were actively planning to take over the village and leave the children who would no longer inherit generational hate from their parents but Danzo wanted as many eyes as possible for his fucked up arm and as such he killed all the children except for one cause Itachi got to him first.

113

u/MMH0K 19h ago

Not Danzo, Obito.

101

Hard.

I don't know why. There maybe is a bit of absurdity to it that triggered the laugh, but I definitely got some side eye lol

31

u/malumfectum 14h ago

Probably because the acting was bad, the direction was bad and the writing was bad, making what was supposed to be a tragic moment merely farcical.

Imagine being Ewan McGregor and having to say the line “I have seen a security hologram of him… killing younglings” with a straight face.

Two. Technically.

You know, you buy the baby shoes and they don't even TRY to walk for the first year. Even in the winter, whenever we were outside, they were kept plenty warm without actual shoes.

That episode of SVU where there was a Cartel murder and the only witness left was a young girl who saw her entire family murdered. And they spend the whole episode trying to protect her, then they can't find her at the foster home and someone tells them, "She's fine. Her uncle came and picked her up."

And the detective replies "She never had an uncle."

61

u/lou-ravenpuff 19h ago

Not gonna lie, I hate the "Her relative came and picked her up" situation because it angers me how 99% of the time a person can be so stupid to the point of handing a child like that.

Especially on a situation where the child's life is literally at stake.

29

u/PiLamdOd 19h ago

It was the 90s. It was pretty common back then for schools not to check too closely when a family member came for a kid.

That's why they are so stringent today about ensuring kids are only released to pre approved adults.

23

u/tsh87 19h ago

It's been a while since I've watched, so I'm sure there's a better explanation of why they fell for it, but even then it's just so insane to me. Like how do you not keep eyes on her the entire time?

15

u/lou-ravenpuff 19h ago

That's what irritates me even more; often in these situations, the child's life is at risk. Didn't anyone ask for the child to be kept under constant supervision? Or for the responsible adult not to let anyone take the child?

Well, it's SVU tho, and they always make mistakes.

In the S1 episode "Hooked", SpongeBob is warned about the hooks, fishermen's bait to drag them out and turn them into food products. But Patrick thinks it's an amusement park and insists they go there play on the hooks, and when he and SpongeBob are walking by, Patrick comments on how there was a child playing there earlier... cut to a pair of shoes abandoned out there, indicating the child was hooked by the fishermen.

If you’re asking what happens in the movie, she gives birth and her husband’s “fans” want to see the baby. After the destruction they’ve caused to her house it’s apparent what happens next. Pretty sure they mob mentality up and just rip that baby apart in a fit of fanaticism. The whole movie is a very on the nose allegory with the father being god, the mother is Mother Earth and I guess the people are people. Multiple interpretations but the director is very Christian or at least uses his beliefs to inform his filmmaking.

Crying Wolf - Metal Gear Solid 4

In her past, she was fleeing a warzone with her baby brother and had to hide while soldiers were passing through the area. Her brother began to cry, so she put her hand over his mouth to keep him quiet. After the soldiers left and she removed her hand from her brother's mouth, he had fallen totally silent. She then wandered until ending up at a refugee camp, still holding the long rotted away body of her brother. While in the overcrowded refugee camp, she was tormented by the constant crying of children and babies. A white wolf then appeared in the night, and "silenced the children," despite her efforts to stop it. It eventually became clear there wasn't really any wolf, and it had only been herself silencing the children's crying. While being told this story, the man telling the story also offhandedly mentions how wolves will eat their young when they die, giving a horrific implication to what she did with the children after silencing them.

In the stage adaptation it isn’t even implied, they just straight up kill them.

u/PaxEpidemic03-10-22 19h ago

I saw, I was not expecting what they did to Veruca.

59

u/Limeicard 19h ago

Yeahhhh… it’s why I personally really dislike it. I feel the upbeat and whimsical theme of the original film and book works because while we aren’t sure if this kids are okay, we also know there’s a decent possibility they end up being fine.

It’s very hard to enjoy an upbeat musical number that ends with a little girl getting dismembered on stage, regardless of how bratty they are.

76

u/Low_Key_2827 18h ago

In the book the kids are all confirmed alive. Charlie sees them leaving the factory from up in the great glass elevator. They’re all deformed now (except Veruca who’s just covered in trash) but still alive.

30

u/drillmaster125 18h ago

The original version of the play is so much better than the American retool. In it, Veruca is still given the ballet number but at no point do they kill her. She still goes down the chute.

Violet still dies though, but at least she gets her own Oompa Loompa song where her dad is more concerned about exploiting her to notice she’s going to pop.

In the stage musical, Veruca is ripped apart by squirrels, and while it’s done in shadow, we can still see them pulling her arms, legs, and head off.

Also, an Oompa Loompa shoots a blow dart at Violet, intentionally popping her.

It’s morbid.

22

u/award_winning_writer 16h ago

Was the musical written by some hack with a hate boner for the book?

The Little Pest, a Scrappy & Oopy cartoon from the 1930s about a short tempered boy named Scrappy who has to take his annoying little brother Oopy on a fishing trip...

After a series of hijinks, Scrappy tricks Oopy into falling in water, where he begins to drown. Scrappy then saves him (only because he imagined himself in an electric chair if the truth came out)...

When Oopy wakes up, he asks for a glass of water, which for some reason triggers Scrappy again, who throws Oopy back into the water to drown in the final scene of the cartoon...

The 1930s were unhinged...

Idk about the guy in the Old opening being a baby. He's clearly saying the word "help", somthing a baby couldn't do. Plus, you can hear another voice with him.

78

u/Argie_Theft_Auto3 21h ago

Well, some audiences speculate that it was a child or baby turned into an adult in just a span of hours. You are free to correct me whether or not it's true, since this is a deleted scene from the movie.

44

u/Ritoki 19h ago

The clothes also seem to fit, and clothes wouldn't 'grow' with the person's body. I haven't seen the scene, though. Just going by the shot you provided.

23

u/Kid-Grey-Nah 19h ago

It's just the guy screaming for help. It's also implied he has others with him, cause you can hear other people screaming for help.

19

u/raccoonsonbicycles 19h ago

u/Kid-Grey-Nah is saying that physically aging rapidly would not cause a baby to learn to speak English.

They would just scream gibberish

I’ve never seen Old, but guessing by the premise, wouldn’t that guy be wearing the torn remains of baby clothes instead of adult clothes?

Congratulations, you've put more thought into the movie than the actual writers did 😁

You know I had the same thought that something about the grown man’s image wasn’t quite right in the context and you know what I came up with? If he had been a baby and grown rapidly, his elbows wouldn’t be so wrinkly 😂 but yea the grown man’s clothes is what is wrong not the used wrinkly elbows

In the first scene of Terrifier 3, after massacring a family and eating the cookies & milk they left out for Santa, Art the Claus finds the daughter hiding in a cabinet. The director Damien Leone outright confirms that she did not survive.

You forgot the mention the literal first kill is Art hacking up her kid brother with an axe lmao

Frank Colletti's family in Mafia: Definitive Edition

Don Salieri originally wants Tommy to kill Frank as punishment for him snitching to a rival Mafia boss. Tommy spares him at the airport after seeing his wife and daughter, and the family flees to Europe.

Later, during the final confrontation of the game, Sam reveals that Salieri sent a hitman to Europe to kill Frank after discovering Tommy spared him. When Tommy asks about what happened to Frank's wife and daughter, Sam just shrugs.

8

u/HospitalLazy1880 19h ago

That daughter is not a kid.

But good pull

7

u/spaghettittehgaps 17h ago edited 17h ago

Mafia 1 writers stated that Tommy (seated on the right) is supposed to be four years old in this photo, so I'm willing to believe that Frank's daughter may be a child accidentally depicted as an adult.

In Daredevil Season 1, Stick (Matt Murdock's mentor) tells him that he killed Black Sky, a powerful assassin kid that was sent to the Hand organization. He shot an arrow through his heart out of camera.

17

u/HospitalLazy1880 19h ago

From how much they talked up the black sky it being revealed to he nothing more than extra good at kung fu was a massive let down and also made this kill 100000000% unnecessary and completely fucked up instead of a completely fucked but potentially necessary thing.

Hawkeye's memory in the series finale was originally of him telling a refuge woman to keep her chicken quiet because they were hiding from an enemy patrol and she ends up smothering it. It turns out he was remembering it wrong and it was actually a baby.

So in Pokemon ultra sun/moon there is a side quest you can do at the trainer school on melemele island where at night, a kid gives you bunch of mystery’s to solve with the solutions ranging from a girl burning love letters to a taken crush to some ghost types pulling a prank on the player, until you solve all the mysteries and return to the girl where she will mention that she came here from another region only for you to get interrupted by a staff member asking what you up to this late, and when you turn to the girl again she’s not there, so I think its implied that a drifloon got her. Theres a lot more to it than that so here’s a video about it if you’re interested  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1tAwbfYUNl0

It's Always Sunny, "The Gang Goes to a Waterpark"

In the episode Mac and Dee get stuck in the tubes of a water slide ride and kids start to pile up behind them. Dee decides they have to start squeezing kids down around them starting with the passed out kid on her shoulder. Mac declines, saying he's going to drown if they do that, then another kid lets them know he has to poop

Cut to the passed out kid coming out the end of the ride into the giant pool, still passed out, floating lifelessly lol

Wasn't there a scene in one Jurassic Park movie (not sure if it's the Lost World) where a kid was attacked and probably eaten by these small dinosaurs? They're in an island and the kid wandered off kinda far(?) and saw these cute little dinosaurs who ended up attacking her and an adult finds the kid and shouts.

14

u/SageDarius 17h ago

I think that's in the Lost World. There's also a scene in the first book, where a nanny goes to check on a sleeping baby because she heard a noise, and finds that compys came in through and open window and are eating the baby.

In the Warhammer show Pariah Nexus, Salamander Sa'kan leads survivors of a Necron tomb world awakening through the emptied warzone where imperial forces where slaughtered in the millions to hopefully find them evac. This includes two children. By the end, a Necron Deathmark (essentially one of the best assassins in the galaxy with technology that goes beyond even magic) is sent out to eradicate them and Sa'kan is forced to abandon them to deal with it before it annhilates them all, telling them to head west.

In the after credits scene, it's revealed out of the survivors, only the one girl made it to the evac site, muttering words in clear shock and suffering from PTSD, the imperial guard mistake her for one of the Necron experiments and the commanding officer orders them to shoot her dead. Her last words are "am I safe?" Before the screen fades to black and a gunshot is heard

Always Sunny

Mac and Charlie get their bikes stolen by some kids. They get them back by beating the crap out of the kids. When later picked up by the rest of the gang Charlie says to Dennis "I think I killed a kid".

10

u/Douche_Kayak 11h ago

in Crtical Roll, Campaign 2, they brought a child with them to a fight and he ends up getting exploded. You can see the mental math going in the DMs head about how he is going to either break immersion and protect the kid or describe a child being murdered to million+ viewers. He settles on screaming for the cleric in the clerics mother's horrified voice.

The scene in ‘Transformers: Dark of the Moon’ where Laserbeak disguises himself as a pink Bumblebee in order to infiltrate a little girl’s father’s home and assassinate him

With the brief glimpses of Laserbeak jumping at the mum, it’s implied that he killed everyone in the house, including the little girl

Naturally, Hasbro would release a toy explicitly referencing this moment in their Studio Series toyline

One Piece has a lot of examples but most notable to me is the erasure of Ohara, where Nico Robin is from. The government obliterated the island & genocided its population to “erase” it. Her and Jaguar D. Saul are the only survivors, and of course other children are shown to live on the island who didn’t escape.
