I think we gotta be pragmatic about AI thumbnails.
I was once entirely against them, and I still hate those cliche obvious chatgpt thumbnails where the same font is always used.
But it's getting to the point where it's use AI or get left behind. Top YouTubers are using AI thumbnails now. The algorithm promotes AI thumbs more. And we are not the average YouTube consumer, the average consumer can't tell, or doesn't care.
It's similar to the stupid open mouth soy facing in thumbnails. We all hate it, the YouTube viewing community says they hate it. But the stats prove doing a stupid face improves CTR.
If you're smart about using it, and understand the basic process of using photoshop or similar programs, you can get some nice results that don't look obviously AI. Ask for seperate elements to be rendered separately so you can move them around in your chosen image editing software later. You can also fix AI errors like 6 fingers (just for example).
As for AI invading the creative space, I agree we shouldn't use AI for our videos. But is the THUMBNAIL really part of that process? Most thumbnails have zero artistic merit.
I remembersomething I was told years ago by a large YouTuber when I complained a thumbnail looked bad from a graphic design stance:
"A thumbnail isn't an art project".
Thanks for coming to my TED talk.
