A Reminder About Suicide-Related Posts

Every once in a while, we see posts from people asking about things like the “least painful way to die” or “how much alcohol would be fatal.” These are serious cries for help.

If you come across a post like this:

  • Please don’t comment advice or suggestions -- even good willed comments can make things worse.
  • Instead, hit report so the mod team and Reddit safety can step in quickly.

If you’re ever feeling like you’re in that dark place yourself, you don’t have to go through it alone:

The best thing we can do as a community is to look out for each other. If you see one of these posts, report, don’t reply.

How do anorexics not faint all the time?

This is a pretty intrusive thought I have sometimes as someone who often forgets to eat but basically if I go too many hours without eating I feel super sick and like fainting, how tf do people with anorexia go like days or months?? I think I’d actually die after only like half a week of not eating. How do they get anything done? But yet they’re not eating and still manage to go to school or work and stuff.

Why are costumes not just made like regular clothing?

I'm not really sure how to put it in context. But like the normal thin fabric that's used on most costumes.

I found a dog who ran away and the owners family begged me not to give it back. Should I keep him?

I came home from work a week ago to a super sweet dog on my porch. He had a collar and was very well trained, obviously belonged to someone, but was really nasty and seemed malnourished. We let him sleep in our laundry room for the night and waited for any response on Facebook for an owner. I got a message from the owners sister in law basically begging me to keep the dog and ignore any efforts from the owner trying to get the dog back because the owner apparently is not providing sufficient care to his animals. So the dog has been with us since, and I was unsure of what to do. I already have three dogs, and I have a decently busy schedule. It’s been really stressful trying to keep them separated and doing slow introductions. I don’t want to be the one to drop him off at the shelter yet again. From her messages, it seems like the dog has just been passed around to whatever crackhead can take care of them for the night for the past few years. I feel pretty responsible for whatever happens to him now, and I just fear that he won’t be able to blend in with my animals after years of neglect and likely abuse. He is older and bigger than my other animals, he has not shown aggression but is definitely not interested in being around them and has given some slight growls when they get too close. I’m looking for recommendations on where to maybe try and find him a nice home or maybe recommendations on how I can improve the relationship between him and my original dogs. He’s a very good dog, 5 years old, well trained and super sweet. Wants a companion for sure. Our house is pretty small, and I hate to leave him in the laundry room alone while at work all day. Any guidance is greatly appreciated.

Never felt this way before, is this normal?

I started a new job 3 weeks ago for my local Walmart, and one of the people that was training me, I feel something ive never felt before, im pretty young and never felt this about someone before, ive have had crushes in school and liked people before, but for some reason this feels different, and i dont know how to explain it. Its not lust, I mean id say shes above average looking, but theirs definitely more better looking people at my job. Is this normal, because its starting to annoy me that feel this way about someone I just met and barley even know, I cant even remember her name

At what point one has overstayed at another's place?

I suddenly have no one to answer to and for the past 2 years, have been visiting my brother and his family more than 3 - 4 times a year. Before, it was literally 2 - 3 times in a decade. When I do, I stay for a week or so and help out with the little things around the house.

Is that one too many times? Have I overstayed my welcome? My brother and I are best friends and love each other wholeheartedly. I cannot say the same about the others around my brother. What should I do to become more of a help than a nuisance?

Will future generations resent us for not nipping AI in the bud?

Yeah AI may not be there yet, might still make a lot of mistakes and might not be good at this or that. But you can't deny its remarkable progress in the past few years and whatever definition of AI you have in your head it's more likely to get there than not in the not too distant future.

And if you think our lobbied governments have a plan for all this then you might have too much faith in our governments and corporations.

Am I allowed to feel this way?

Me [f 24] my boyfriend [m 23] and his mom were taking a day trip to Salem which for the most part was really enjoyable but on the way home I took a nap in the car but I woke up and opened my eyes to his mothers phone in my face taking pictures of me sleeping. I’m furious embarrassed and just absolutely disgusted. I get it’s a joke to some people but not to me I don’t shove my phone in peoples faces when they’re sleeping.

Anybody else hear music playing that isn't there when sleep deprived?

This happened to me for the first time recently, i stayed up for more than a day was really sleep deprived, began hearing music that probably wasn't there, i can't explain it but it sounded like it way playing in my brain or something. Just think its curious as my Step-dad told me of similar experiences he's had, to me it sounded like some classical tune.

How do I make the holidays feel special?

Growing up during holidays we had big family meals with dozens of people. Then when I got married at 19 my family kinda just stopped acting like I was part of their life, even though we live nearby. Going to family meals now is just awkward because nobody really talks to us, id rather not go, and over the years have skipped going more and more.

I'm 33 now and I have yet to find a way to enjoy the holidays. It's just me, my husband, and 6 year old. I love cooking and have tried just cooking for us 3 a nice thanksgiving or Christmas meal with desserts but my husband and daughter are picky eaters so they don't really eat much and I feel like it's a waste of time and effort on my part.

One year me and my husband did a 5k but due to health issues I've not been able to do that for the time being.

Also, I'm the only one that puts forth effort to make things special for holidays, if I didn't make a thanksgiving meal or get Christmas gifts then we would just have a normal day like any other. I told my husband he can get himself a Christmas gift this year and I will get my own, we will wrap our own gifts and it will be a surprise for everyone when we open it on Christmas day. This was after last year when I had spent months getting gifts I found during sales, wrapped his and my daughter tons of gifts, filled their stockings, and I didn't have any gifts or anything in my stocking until a few days before Christmas and they all seemed like very last minute grabs. After being married for 14 years I was over feeling depressed every year thinking I wasn't getting any gifts (he knows my love language is gifts) and I would make him Amazon lists and Walmart lists with stuff I would like that way he didn't have to try hard, but for some reason he never got any of that stuff.

Anyways, Holidays just kinda feel shitty anymore and I wish it wasn't like that. I decorate and try to go out and do festive stuff, but it feels like I'm just doing it for myself. I don't have any friends, I'm a stay at home mom, and we don't have any family that really cares to come around. I live in a very small town of 3k, we don't have events or big community groups that do anything.

Why is the Dead Internet Theory considered a conspiracy theory?

We have clear evidence that bots generate over 50% of internet traffic, and we even have videos of people investigating bots pretending to be real people. So, why is this theory considered a conspiracy theory? And what's supposed to be conspiratorial about it anyway?

Why am I not sure of anything?

This is something that has been going with me post covid. I feel like I'm never sure of anything I say or do. I find myself using words like "probably" and "I think" quite often that it recurs in a single conversation with someone many times. I also find myself double checking stupid or tiny things or googling words or topics before talking abt it even if I know it alot of times.

I'm currently a uni student and I study quite well for exams, but if someone asked me how I did, I can never articulate a decisive answer. Despite that, I find that I actually did great or even passed it.

This is smth that's pmo because I feel like I just larp knowing. I actually don't know anything and it's affecting me.

Is it appropriate to put a gift card in a thank you card?

Is it appropriate to include gift cards in thank you cards to specific people? I'm giving three thank you cards to three different people for three different reasons and am not sure if it's appropriate to include a small gift card in each. They are all in response to doing something in relation to my father's passing and I've included slightly more info below.

  1. One of his old coworkers has basically helped me put together his memorial

  2. A different old coworker took his dog after he passed because I was unable to. He did this completely unasked because he knows how much the dog meant to my father.

  3. Another old coworker went to his estate sale (which I did not know was happening despite being the only beneficiary of his estate \[unfortunately I am not the executor\]) and purchased something I didn't know he still had but would have liked to keep. She has agreed to "give them back" free of charge.

I'm thinking of including a small gift card in each thank you card, enough for a coffee or two, but I don't know if this would be insulting or tacky. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

How are people making new friends?

i (19f) feel like i’m having a difficult time making friends and it’s driving me crazy now. i was homeschooled from 7th grade until graduation and the friends i had we’ve drifted with them moving away from college. i am a shy girl but in the passed couple of months ive been trying to open up more than i feel like i ever have in my life😪 im on a couple of friend making apps but everyone is looking to date, so i guess my question is how are other people typically making friends (and making it look so easy😂)

How Do You Have a Good Conversation with Someone New?

Hii👋🏼

I've always wondered what makes a conversation genuinely good. Like, how do you make a chat interesting instead of letting it turn into boring small talk?

I'm especially curious about online conversations, where you barely know anything about the other person.

What kind of questions, scenarios, debates, or ideas keep a conversation flowing naturally? What topics make people open up, share their opinions, and actually enjoy talking to each other?

And what makes someone go from being just another person you're chatting with to someone you genuinely look forward to talking to?

I'd love to hear your experiences, tips, or even examples of conversations that really stuck with you.

I'm trying to improve my communication skills, so I'm genuinely interested in learning what makes a conversation meaningful, fun, and memorable.

Are people nowadays less imaginative due to the rise of visual media?

I am 34 and I grew up in a poor family with only 1 tv for 7 people in very different ages so I barely saw it. I spent my childhood reading and I would visualize everything I read, imagine additional storylines.

Even now my imagination is so vivid I can lose myself in a story I create in my own head for hours (I think it's because I spent my whole childhood reading).

My question is... Now that so much media is visual (movies, tv shows, youtube, tiktok) and there is less reason to visualize what you read, are people's imaginations weaker?

Do young people still create worlds in their mind? Or scroll their phones until sleep hits, no breaks when they just don't watch anything? I just can't "imagine" when they would have time to have their alone time with their own thoughts and ideas when you always have some video going?

I'm probably just an old bitter person that doesn't understand tiktok

Someone has been calling from this number but I can’t figure out who it is and I’ve been ignoring it until today, how do I find out?

. I received a call through Google Voice, but I couldn’t determine what they wanted.
Google Voice marked the number as suspected spam. I searched Google and tried Truecaller, but Truecaller only showed “Likely a business,” listed Onvoy as the carrier, and gave Temecula, California, as the location. It didn’t identify a specific organization.
Has anyone had a similar experience? Is there a reliable reverse phone lookup service or another way to verify whether a call actually came from an office? I’d appreciate suggestions for finding out who called.

Will many young men have basically no future?

It sounds quite bleak but it’s something I’ve noticed a lot lately, in other people and also in myself.

Many guys my age will probably struggle to find a job. If they do find one, chances are they won’t make much money. They will barely be able afford a car, let alone a house.

Not to mention, work is becoming a lot less about how hard you work or how capable you are, and more connections / people-skills based. Especially with AI and stuff. Obviously not a good thing for those who aren’t social butterflies, and don’t personally know a CEO.

It also seems that people in general are a lot more antisocial and superficial and living in their own bubble, compared to the past. So stuff like making new friends is harder. Even if you go outside.

I think it’s obvious that dating and being in a relationship is not a possibility for many guys these days. Not only are people unable to meet each other, but it’s also heavily discouraged for guys to approach women or express interest. Women don’t approach men (unless the man looks exceptionally good) so naturally most guys miss out on relationships. This (and apps) just makes a very shallow, skewed situation. Easily well over half of the guys I know (including myself) have never dated before. Can’t speak for myself but the other guys are interesting, respectful and for the most part, not even bad looking guys.

The reason why I’m talking about guys specifically is because the whole social, dating and belonging aspect is much more effortless for women. A lot of the other factors are still there, so it’s won’t be easy for anyone in general, but I guess it would be much less hopeless and empty.

It just seems like there isn’t much “purpose” for guys my age. There’s very little opportunity to earn a living for yourself, or do something meaningful, or have a family, or be part of a group etc. Obviously this is very different compared to the past or even what many were raised to anticipate. A lot of guys will be unfulfilled and just be stuck trying to fill a void. It looks almost dystopian so I wonder if this is real.

How did humanity go from thinking throwing people into volcanoes will stop eruptions to building nuclear reactors?

More specifically I'm curious how people escaped the cycle of perpetual ignorance that people were trapped in during the early years of civilization. Seems odd that anything got done to advance society when pretty much everyone believed all this insane nonsensical stuff.

Reasons why a guy friend would often talk about this creep?

As someone who has a hard time decoding other people’s intentions and reasonings, why is my close guy friend acting this way.. I’m not super upset by it, but curious. Here’s what happened: about four months ago an older classmate (university student) of ours sent me unwanted inappropriate messages, which then I told him not to and it ended there. I told my guy friend about this and although I never really bring it up anymore he always comments about the older guy: when we were watching a movie the couple was making out and he mentioned the older guy during that scene, he would ask me if that guy still messages me, says it makes him depressed to think about that guy (I told him not to worry about it), randomly brings him up when we’re out shopping or whatever saying that he hope we don’t bump into him, if a car looks like that guys car he would point it out), he would say “he was probably down bad for you.” I know my guy friend sees me as a only friend because he says so, but then why someone act like this. Bringing it up at least every week. Is he that worried.. I don’t know if it’s the right thing to get upset about just confused and don’t know if I’m thinking it too deeply lol. Is it worth it to ask?
