A couple of weeks ago I came into my office and the frame on my desk had a photo on it I did not put there. I said "what" out loud. It was me and my friend (I will call him K) sitting on the pizza box, junior year I think, and I do not remember that night at all.
K and I lived across the hall from each other for three years and extend all day about nothing, we never had to make plans because he was always there. He go a job two states away after we graduated and I honestly could not tell you when we stopped talking every day. All we did for about a year was like each other's stories, and I take like four days to answer a text, so most of that is my fault.
He had a work thing near me in April so he stayed on my couch one night. It was nice. A little awkward though, we mostly talked about jobs and his new apartment and that kind of thing. Before he left he said we should do this more, and then something like "I am going to send you the worst photos I have of you." I thought that was funny and added him to the Times frame. Then I did not message him once for like six months, he did not send anything either, and I forgot he could even do that.
When the photo showed up I asked him where he found it, and he said his phone pulled it up, one of those 7 years ago today things, and also that I look terrible in it. I think he was doing the worst photos thing, and it is not even that bad of a photo. I had "hey" typed out him the week before and then deleted it because it felt weird out of nowhere. We texted for about an hour and near the end he wrote "we are so bad at this" and we said we would call on Sunday.
He pushed the call to the next Sunday an hour before, and then I forgot that one because I was at my parents'. Is there some trick to keeping it going after you get an old friend back like this? I might try calling him on some random weeknight and see if he picks up.
