First time composter. I’m doing some compost lasagnas and added a lot of browns on top of a layer of greens. When I came back to add some more stuff I was surprised I could make out the exact area I poured some pee on

Pisspost My husband and teenage son refuse to pee in my compost.

2.1k Upvotes

This sub inspired me to start composting in early June. I'm still not entirely sure why. Maybe I'll actually garden next year. Maybe it satisfies my scavengerous (?) nature.

I work in a restaurant so I have a steady supply of food scraps and cardboard. I did all the things and got a shredder from Facebook marketplace, and a Geobin. The pile is getting big and I'm seeing all the BSF larve and weird fungus.

My husband was having fun, testing his knife sharpness on the cardboard I was going to shred. I suggested that he pee on the pile too, as it's a good source of nitrogen. He was mortified. He called in my son who said "ew no".

This also led to the discovery that they don't pee in the shower and they want me to stop doing that too. I guess I just need to talk to someone about this because I feel like I'm living with aliens, and I know this is the right place.

Pisspost If you collect urine for your compost and notice a sweet smell ... get tested for diabetes!

Don't be like me! Be smart! Sweet is not normal!

I collect urine in 5 gallon buckets with spent mushroom substrate. For the past three months, my buckets smelled super sweet and would get really bubbly. I joked it was all the kombucha I was drinking ... which was not totally inaccurate, I guess.

Anyway, apparently my blood sugar has been hovering in the high 300s for months. I was pissing straight sugar. In the hospital now and face-palming that I missed this super obvious sign.

Now my compost pile and I will both have to turn over a new leaf and reckon with our sugar addictions ...

Pisspost What are we using for pee cups? 🥰💖✨️

I don't live in a private enough area to pee directly on my compost. For those like me, what are you using to bring it to the bin? Here is my cup for tax. Love you say it back.

EDIT: I JUST WANT NICE COMPOST AND THIS ADDS MOISTURE, NITROGEN, AND HEAT ALL AT ONCE.

from lesbiyond in the comments:

10g nitrogen per day alone is enough for ~2-4lbs of carbons per day.

For the compost: It's free, instantly bioavailable, jumpstarts microbes, provides moisture.

For the environment: Saves a ton of water, reduces wastewater treatment, reduces toxic nitrogen build up and eutrophication

Lotta folks in the comments getting grumpy saying I have a fetish. I am just excited about making a nice compost for my other grow hobby. and i like feet not pee

EDIT 2: #1 on r/composting and my #1 post of all time. This is my legacy. I am the Piss Cup girl. 😂🤟

p.s. those of you still getting upset in the comments are gonna be REALLY upset when you find out what I'm growing with my pee compost 🤭

I did not expect this book to have as much useful info as it does. The second photo in particular is pretty useful for composting. It talks a lot about diluting urine and using it as a fertilizer as well as adding it to compost.

There’s also a chapter on the historical and medical 🤢 uses of urine and a chapter on urinals lol

Pisspost Pissing actually changed my compost

I started pissing on my small compost buckets for my greenhouse a couple months ago after seeing it being joked around about in this subreddit, and it genuinely accelerated everything. The piss lads are right. Piss on your compost. All hail piss.

Pisspost I stumbled into this sub, is everyone just peeing on piles of dirt?

Complelty new here but clicked into a few posts, almost every one has a reference to pissing on the pile or adding "urea water".

Any scientific reason for it?

How much piss is too much piss?

... I just seen there is a piss post flair...

Pisspost How often can I piss on my compost?

New to composting and just started this bin last week. Lots of leaves and wood pellets at the base.

Can I pee in it as much as I want? Not joking. Curious if I can overdo the pee?

Thanks

Relax, it's roughly 7 gallons of shredded cardboard that'll I'll be dumping coffee grounds and then multiple gallons on bokashied greens on. It'll all compact down, it was just pre-loading day and I thought the entire half of the tumbler being full of pizza box shred was funny.

Then I’ll do it. Tired of waiting and I’m taking the plunge! It would be so much easier for my husband to occasionally wiz on the pile but a composter has to do what she has to do! Wish me luck and a hot af pile folks!

Pisspost Urine in compost

I am a lazy composter. Everything goes in there and I rarely if ever turn it. Now, I have zero qualms about adding urine to it, but I recently ready something about peecycling that said to keep it in a jug for six months and then dilute it. Look, I’ve been a nurse for a very long time. There is not much that can gross me out. But, my partner is already ewwy on the piss front, so keeping jugs of urine in the basement for months is a no go at my house.

However, I think my peecycling article was talking about putting it directly on plants.

So, my question is, do y’all go through all that riggamaroll just to add piss to compost or are you legit just peeing on the pile?

PS … I love that my title got me a PSA basically telling me that, yes human urine is used in compost, sometimes we joke about it, sometimes we’re serious 🤣

PPS…I have chickens now, so once full grown, I’ll stop putting everything in compost. I’ll start giving everything to chickens and compost poo and bedding(hemp)

Pisspost Adding Some Color to the "Pee On It" Comments For Newbies

For us newbies, we keep on reading the answer is "pee on it".

But a few questions come out:

a) How much? Now I don't want to be measuring my pee so lets make how many times a day 1, 3 5?

b) For how long. Is one day enough or are we talking about regularly?

c) Where do you pour it? On top? Do you try to pour it in the center of the pile (by creating a little whole)?

Anything else?

Pisspost I started peeing in my compost and it has really made such a huge difference!!

I used to never pee in my compost because it was too gross. But because of the sage wisdom of the pro-pee contributors in this sub, I decided to give it a try and the results are phenomenal!

My plants have doubled and sometimes even tripled in size. I fell into the trap of believing in “science” and listening to so-called experts who tried to warn me that too much urine in my compost can be problematic because it can lead to a nitrogen imbalance, waterlogging, and potential issues with plant health.

My pro-pee composting neighbor who can see me in my yard, came over to congratulate me. “You’re in the club now!” Thank you r/composting!!

NOTE: This was posted on April Fools Day. I never pee in my compost because it’s gross and unnecessary.

Pisspost Should I Not Piss in the Compost when on an Antibiotic?

Got bit by probably 5 ticks over the weekend and got put on an antibiotic to prevent any Lyme, specifically doxycycline for 10 days.

No pissing on the pile for at least 10 days, right? Should I wait even longer? Unfortunately there is not that much info about there on piss in compost while on medication :(

Original post: What are we using for pee cups? 🥰💖✨️

I've been working on this pile for 3 weeks. I finally got a thermometer to check the progress and the pile was only around 70º F. Added more urine x2 days.

Look at her now! Taking name suggestions because I've grown attached.

p.s. to that one user who always bitches about pee posts, my pile is hotter than yours 🫵🤭💅✨️

Pisspost Avoid the dogma!

Saw a HOT post yesterday where OP was getting roasted for their finished compost. I have to say I had the same initial reaction to it, however it really is good finished stuff that looks healthy. AND its the exact same thing I do! Hell it looks better than what I've bought municipally. So OP forget the haters, newbies especially gardeners don't be mislearned by the harpies who only preach 3x3 and 1/4 screen. Finished product is in the eye of the beholder. For the vast majority of my compost uses, cooked compost with partially digested materials is perfect.

Pisspost When should I stop peeing on the compost pile?

The pile is still cooking and there are some uncooked browns still, I am turning it once or twice a week and watering it, and peeing on it.

Is there a point at which I should stop peeing on it? Like a few weeks or a month before I plan to dry it, sift it, and store it? Like obviously I don't want the finished compost to smell like my pee and the microbes take some time to digest the piss or whatever. Thanks
