Hey!
Blender Foundation just launched its annual survey to better understand the user community and determine the future direction of the Blender project.

It's anonymous and quick, only takes 5 minutes to complete.

My family was at the lake so I got a bunch of photoscans of the shore and they've been so incredibly fun to play with. The first image is a quick render I did to showcase them! I went a little crazy on the details (wetness, trees, compositing) but it turned out quite nicely. Questions and feedback are welcome as always!

Original Content Showcase Mega Bevels (WIP)

Ironically, evaluating smooth blends between meshes has been a headache for as long as I can remember. Historically I've been stuck with three poor options:

  1. Native 'bevel' (either manual or modifier), which requires nice mesh topology to achieve large blends
  2. Implicit approach (i.e. voxel remesh or creativity with volume geometry nodes), which is flexible but completely destroys topology even far from the blend
  3. Sculpt-mode smooth tool with dynamic topology. Due to being imprecise, this isn't ideal for hard surface modelling, among other issues.

As part of a course project, I'm developing a PDE-based tool to make this easier. This operates on existing vertex coordinates, rather than creating new ones, and so it keeps meshes watertight. I plan on releasing an add-on, but wanted to share this in-progress demo. For those interested, here's a sketch of how it works:

  • Choose a set of source edges, defined in this demo as the intersection edges of a mesh boolean
  • Calculate geodesic distances from each vertex to those source edges (I use a heat-based solver introduced by Keenan Crane)
  • Extract isolines (at some user-chosen distance) of the distance field by linear interpolation and splitting faces (this can be done in real time)
  • Smooth the interior region (implementing this robustly remains a work in progress. the demo shows biharmonic energy flow, but this isn't always particularly well-conditioned).

Happy to discuss more if people have questions! Let me know what features would be useful - I think preserving texture UVs for instance would be handy and not too-difficult. I also plan to incorporate a 'profile' option that allows control over the shape of the blended region.

Feeling about halfway done with this thing - at least for the exterior.

Based this design on a few real-world vehicles with a focus on procedural armor plates to make it easier to iterate and tweak the vehicle layout.

Original Content Showcase I made a trailer for my university's FSAE team

When I was tasked with creating a trailer for my university's Formula SAE team (Melbourne University Racing), I was really inspired by Ash Thorp, Colorsponge and William Landgren, so I set out to do something similar.

A FSAE team is comprised of students who design, build and race a formula style racecar, competing against other universities every year.

I've been experimenting with my post workflow a lot, especially within DR and Fusion and I think this helped me finalise it.

I found these pictures on HiROKI ITOKAZU's page on weebly. I'd love to know how to make realistic hair like this. Does anyone know? You don't have to explain everything, just tell me what to look up, I'll figure it out. I'm pretty new to 3D

My new rigging tutorial is out!

Watch it here:
https://youtu.be/EFH4wZeXu3w

In that video I will show you how to rig a whole Scissor Lift with just one controller.

I’ll walk you through my process of setting up the bone chain, using some constraints to automate the movement, and also showing the ups and downs (hehe) of some alternative ideas.

I hope you like it 🙂✌️

I traced it from an image and created a plane with the rough design. Then extruded it and applied subdivision modifier. But it looks a bit rough. Image 1 and 2 show that it does not look completely smooth and professional. If you check image 4 there is a lil bump at the joints.

I am familiar with blender but I am a novice at modelling.

Tutorial recommendations are also welcome. I'm trying to get it done today so I can 3D print it tomorrow and drop it at the jeweller
