Mark Dantonio checked out his last couple seasons, and had a bunch of coordinators he just shuffled around so the program stagnated. Decided in February that he was retiring, so they scrambled and hired Mel Tucker. Tucker had one good season, then got fired for masturbating on a call with a vendor. Program scrambled again after firing him for cause and hired Jonathan Smith from Oregon State, who was ass. Fired him and now we have Pat Fitzgerald.

And that one good season was basically entirely due to Kenneth Walker. That dude was unbelievable

You're underselling the talent on that team. K9 was a massive part of it, no doubt, but our receivers that year were Jayden Reed, Keon Coleman, and Jalen Nailor. No, they're not Jeremiah Smith but K9 plus three nfl-caliber wide receivers (and Connor Hayward) was too much for even Mel Tucker to mess up.

very confused how the Oline was getting dominated by MSU's Dline today. We couldnt block to save our lives and had them all over the backfield the entire time. Chiles was running for his life
22
u/MrRichStarfish Northwestern Wildcats 1h ago
Because they were shooting gaps and playing aggressive as hell which was to be expected from Fitz who absolutely did not want MSU to get beat up the middle.
We were then very successful by just dumping it off to a RB or hitting a TE.
But instead of just keeping with that and having Chiles throw screens to beat the pressure, Chip kept trying to hammer it through the middle

I legit think the hazing overshadowed how badly his teams performed in his last few years. If NU didn't screw up by first trying to throw it under the rug for him instead of firing him right away, I highly doubt he would have gotten his wrongful termination lawsuit settled out of court and been able to coach again.
Instead, he somehow benefited from a sexual harassment scandal that happened in his locker room.

u/1nf1niteCS Nevada Wolf Pack • Northwestern Wildcats 1h ago
Outside the 2020 season he was horrendous at the end of the NU stint. 7-29 in the 3 other years before he was fired. 14-31 if you include 2020. I think Mike Hankwitz carried his teams defensively.
→ More replies (3)8
u/demo4 Northwestern • Land of Lincoln … 1h ago
To me, the hazing scandal getting him canned was probably a blessing in disguise for the program in the long run. He was terrible in the end of his tenure and before that definitely was carried by Hankwitz.
I really don't know what it would have taken results wise to get the university to fire him. He was so tied in that I feel like no one ever talked about the future without him even though his coaching and coordinator hires were bad.

Fitz deserves credit for making a lot of a little at NU. But by 2019, it was clear that the sport had started to pass him by offensively. The university cost themselves millions by firing him for hazing when they should’ve fired him for going 4-20 in his final two seasons.

terrible playcalling on our last drive. NU was always going to get it back with over a minute, which means they have were probably gonna tie the game up even if we hit our FG. It was dumb to play the timer that early. Fitz should've called a pass play. NU knew he was too stupid to try anything but run there.

Michigan State this is going to be the first of a lot of losses in Fitz's tenure where you will be asking yourself "How the fuck did we manage to lose that game?"
Best of luck. Fitz had gotten extremely complacent and stubborn by the end of his tenure here and that doesn't seem to have changed.
Re: Northwestern that was the first time all season where I thought the coaches mismanaged the game but, it all worked out
35
u/Mr-Cantaloupe Michigan State Spartans 1h ago
This loss sucks, but I don’t blame Fitz’ coaching on that final drive. Most coaches would opt to run the ball instead of going for a first down on a passing play which also stops the clock. Alessio was missing throws all game.
You take the points & the lead, and hope your defense can at least put up a fight. It obviously went terribly wrong, but we just didn’t execute

I will never understand what the leadership of MSU's athletic program has been doing for the last 10 years.
Idiotic decision after idiotic decision. Tucker, smith, fitz - all mediocre (at best) head coaches from mediocre (at best) programs. As if our leadership thought it would be easier for them to win here? No $ commitment to recruiting top players. What do you expect? It's like they're aiming for the middle. And then miss.
The new AD emailed the entire fanbase a few weeks ago, basically apologizing for the miserable state of the football program.
I want to say I hope things soon change. But "hope" would imply I'm at least a little optimistic that it might happen. I'm not. Gonna go add a backup flair so I can post something positive in r/cfb once in a while.
13
u/Inside-Drink-1311 Rutgers Scarlet Knights 1h ago
Fitzgerald was a panic hire as you weren’t going to get one of your top options. You probably would have been better off keeping Smith for another year and just throw away this year and got a head start on this years cycle.
I think he should be one and done but I really don’t think they are going to fire their third coach in four years.

u/First-Pride-8571 Michigan Wolverines 1h ago
Also probably stings that they could have hired Cignetti, but instead hired Jonathan Smith. And then could have hired Chesney, but instead hired Fitz.
I know it certainly stings that we had that clown Warde hiring first Moore and then Whittingham.
Rare when at least one of Michigan/MSU isn't good, but we are both complete ass. But for the fact that we play each other, I'm not sure that either of us would otherwise win another game this year.

The issue is they turned down Bob Chesney to hire Fitzgerald, a guy shrouded in controversy, historical mediocrity, and zero experience coaching in the NIL era
7
u/wolverine237 Michigan • Northwestern 42m ago
The thing about Fitzgerald is that he had clearly and obviously lost it at Northwestern in his last several seasons. He was already in fire the coordinators to save yourself mode before the investigation and his firing. Honestly, I don't think he goes out that way if he is still successful at NU.
I think it's a situation very similar to the one in Michigan where everyone thought you were getting the version of the guy from a decade or 15 years ago and you're not, we are not.
5
u/HistoricalYogurt5085 1h ago
People like to think of Fitz through his "up" years and blame the down years for Northwest's academic standards. I thought he would have more success with resources, but wasn't sure how well he would adapt to NIL....

Well part of the reason is the constant turnover of ADs and a general lack money or willingness to spend money where it matters instead of shit coaches that cost us even more money that could go towards obtaining talent, solid coaches that can leverage said talent, and keeping that talent. But State is such a shit show program that we aren’t even appealing to talented coaches and players we need.

And hats off to NU for some legit clutchness from the defense and offense side, closing with a nice drive at the end. The Braun teams seem to have a frequency of clutchness the Fitz teams lacked (not to say the Fitz teams had none; there's the 2018 Holiday Bowl and that come-from-behind win against Nebraska for that one win of that season, of course). Definitely not calling that last drive ugly, cool cat stuff from Chiles, the line, Komolafe, and Wilde.

Easy, he got the ball in a tie game with 3:30 to go on the NU 28 and ended up with 0 points and still left a minute of game clock up and then let Northwestern march down the field with time to just let 20 seconds burn before the final spike. He always lost these games at NU and it's no difference here. It comes down to the coach.

After decades of seeing fans of other teams say "I don't feel good, but at least we won" after playing us, I get it now.
