Troll priests feel like an odd example. They're in vanilla, and de loa priests are shown using holy and shadow spells as NPCs all over classic.
5
u/8-Brit 7h ago
It's mostly re: "But all the spells are named after Light based Worship" as an argument vs Tauren Paladins/Priests, when we've had two races not have a problem being priests despite that even in 2004.

u/MoonAttempt 7h ago edited 6h ago
Tbf this was always an issue. See Night Elves.
It was massively expanded as an issue as new cultures were able to be rethought as paladins in later expansions.

u/Apepy 6h ago
I mean, Taurens does not have this problem because they literally worship the sun. :P
•
u/MoonAttempt 2h ago
Make the spells slightly more orange for that race and issue is fixed.
Spoiler but they didn't do that in retail for the past 16 years since Tauren paladins were introduced.

To be fair, Trolls having something akin to Priests makes perfect sense even if they should really give them race specific animations, but they worship the Loa on a Spiritual Level so it checks out.
Same way I can totally buy Tauren Priests and to some extend Paladins with their Worship of the Earthmother and her Eyes (Sun and Moon).
Now Orc Mage is pretty odd because I dont even know who would teach them and if they would even be capable of using the Arcane when none of their lore relates to it.
You can kinda say the same about Troll Mages but at least they are more magic alligned with the Elves literally being evolved Trolls that got into Magic soup too much.
•
u/volinaa 4h ago
tauren beliefs are represented by shaman, their religion is animalist/spiritist, priest/paladin heavily implies church/organized autoritarian religion/dogmatic shit
•
u/Boethion 3h ago
Sunpriests totally fit the bill for Tauren culture, Religion isnt all like Christianity/Islam
•
u/innerparty45 4h ago
Now Orc Mage is pretty odd because I dont even know who would teach them and if they would even be capable of using the Arcane when none of their lore relates to it.
Orc Mage is one of those race-class combos that completely break the uniqueness of choice. Like, ok, I guess you can make it so that some Ogres or present Warlocks taught them, but in that case literally everyone can learn everything - why even have race class combinations?
Also, Dwarf Shamans should have been better explained.
•
u/Boethion 3h ago
I guess on the Alliance side Gnome Priests would literally have been taught by Dwarfs and Humans, who both have a very strong religious culture, so its not like teaching one race the customs of another can't work, but Orcs just have no need to learn Magic from the Undead (since they would be the only ones who could realistically teach it) as Orc culture is very tied to spirits and Elements, so an Orc Mage is just an Elemental Shaman wearing Cloth anyways.
Dwarf Shaman is just Wildhammer teachings, it checks out.
•
u/Alinkard 4h ago
Orc Mage : maybe like Ogre-Magi with the Runestone from Elven druids > Altars of Storms (Warcraft II), that allowed them to create mages at some point in the past. And Orc Mages would then be a relic from the past, like there are still Orc Warlocks.
Thrall was also raised by Humans near Dalaran, but I'm not really sure what could have been possible to do with this.

u/Sarmattius 6h ago
ok but you are in the wrong here. Troll shadow priest is a unit in warcraft 3. Orc mages were there in vanilla in LBRS.

u/Xarophet 5h ago
Bruh I’m becoming convinced that all these “that’s not in the spirit of Vanilla!” Classic Andys either didn’t actually play Vanilla or have forgotten literally everything about it lmao
12
u/ItzAmazed 7h ago
Imo any race can be any class if you flavour it well, priest troll can work if you flavour the healing like loa blessings or (new) warlock class for voodoo etc.
That's why taurens paladins could work, if flavoured well. That being said, I don't want each race to be able to become each class. I like some of the identity. But locking one race to one class only sucks a bit imo.
I've seen dwarf druid idea been floating around, and again if they flavour it well it could be really cool.
3
u/Nutzori 6h ago
I was with you until the last line, I dont feel like Titan created races should be druids. They lack the connection to nature in a sense, I feel. Worgen were aight in retail because they got that connection from the curse which was druidic in origin
3
u/Laverathan 6h ago
See, I'm with you there, but if we're being technical, one could argue that Eonar kinda sorta helped birth druidism by creating the Wild Gods which eventually led to the creation of druidism.
•
u/ItzAmazed 3h ago
I would not want dwarf druids to be basically a short nelf.
Maybe these dwarfs are special and lose their curse of the flesh and they turn to stone. (Earthen) Maybe they are able to control their stone forms and turn into stone versions of a bear or maybe a ram instead.
Or instead go the full on Wildhammer and they are connected with shamanism. And they have elemental versions of the shapeshifting and it's a druid with shamanistic coat of paint.
Could be interesting, idk im not a game designer
5
u/8-Brit 7h ago
That's why taurens paladins could work, if flavoured well. That being said, I don't want each race to be able to become each class. I like some of the identity. But locking one race to one class only sucks a bit imo.
Jokes aside that's my take. There are some combos I'd like, yeah. But I don't want the floodgates opened.
There's far weirder combos out there. I still think giving everyone monk was a mistake, they only did it to get more people to play it.
3
u/ItzAmazed 7h ago
I don't really care that much, but I feel like pally being only given to undeads makes horde so full of undead pallys. Maybe later they will give taurens the blessing
2
u/8-Brit 7h ago
At minimum we know new options are coming, I'm fairly confident tauren priest is a shoe in given the NPCs present and the devs admitting Horde have fewer options for priest.
Paladin is a bit up in the air, though we do have the SoD NPC still. I'd absolutely play one though. Paladin is my favourite class, Tauren is my favourite race. It would be a slam dunk into my soul. And with tmog I can avoid the gaudy holy knight tier sets and put on something more suitable.
1
2
u/Mumgavemeherpes 7h ago
I would like more classes for each race if they all had unique racials and flavor so that same classes of different races dont look nor play exactly the same. Just minor things like taurens light being a more sunset orange to signify its power from the sun god or undead paladins having an ability that deals big self damage for big effects.
I appreciate that undead paladins gets quests and a new area to introduce them but I wish the part about the light being painful to channel was represented mechanically somehow. Maybe something like having to spend 10% of a spells mana cost as health rather than mana?

•
u/a_hundred_highways 3h ago
Troll priest one is very confusing to me. As in it's confusing to me that anyone finds it confusing, lol. "Voodoo priest" is literally the original voodoo THING. They were literally traditional healers who sometimes also did curses.
They could have a bit more cursiness going on but it never seemed the least bit odd. I mean Witch Doctor is one of the classes in Diablo, troll priest sin't quite the same but it isn't far at all.
•
u/ItzAmazed 3h ago
I mean yeah but the priest spells aren't voodoo you know, it's the "light". I kinda wish you would have unique animations or effects for the same class but different race, just like the animations :)
•
•
u/ABDLTA 4h ago
I cant buy tauren rogue, most others I can imagine lol
•
u/ItzAmazed 3h ago
Yeah that's more tough, like I said only if it get's flavoured well.
But being devils advocate here is how I would flavour it, as a fun exercise.
Assasination Tauren could be flavoured as using herbs to craft special poisons and using more tribal methods.
Combat I could pretty easily see as a pirate/bladeswinger. Basically just a 2h warrior wearing leather.
Sub would be the hardest, cause that's the role that's all about stealth and taurens are kinda big. But blinds can easily be that dust they throw up in the air in the original cinamatic, and if they use camouflage they could blend in (same way giant t-rexes could still camoflage themselfs). Stuns such as cheap shot, I could see as tauren hitting someone on the head and they pass out.
It's fun to think about, but I'd rather not see a rogue Tauren for what it's worth lol.
•
u/MoonAttempt 2h ago
There were Tauren Rogues in vanilla, they were just largely part of the Grimtotem Clan and appear as enemies (even if the Grimtotem are, in part, in the Horde).
6
u/LoreChief 7h ago
Priests are probably one of the most common classes we see for trolls in the lore lol. Idk what you're thinking.
Orc mages not so much.
Tauren pally is still dumb af, even with the poor attempt at inventing lore.
•
u/a_hundred_highways 3h ago
I'm fine with all races being accepted for Paladin training, but they should serve the Light after (aka be on the alliance).
Hot take, but Tauren Paladins on the alliance would be classic-spirit-conpatible much more than any horde paladin of any kind. "Paladin = Ally" would stay a simple visual cue, and I don't thing some of them being taller, wider and with horns would break it up all that much, certainly not once there's more class-distinct gear.
I'd also be fine with Dark Iron Dwarf Shamans on the horde...class visual identity stays distinctly horde, dark iron dwarves are pretty different looking too.
That there is some cross faction collaboration is evidenced by Sgt Bly's "group" in ZF which has an orc warlock, dwarf priest, and even a goblin...but Ally = Pally and Horde = Shaman shouldn't change whatever they do with races imo. If class-faction exclusivity for paladin/shaman isnt a classic pillar then I don't know what is.

You can agree with both, though. Orc Mages seem stupid to me. Orcs are shamanistic. Even warlocks are a stretch given their history. Undead Spriests make sense but not Disc or Holy and certainly not Paladins. Forsaken are destroyed by the light. Yes, I’ve fought Four Horseman. That’s a retcon being used to justify a nonsensical addition.
Tauren Paladins I’m not a fan of. But I think Gnome Warriors are dumb too. Let’s tank Onyxia as a 2.5’ 45lb garden ornament with a 1h sword roughly the size of a butter knife.
But at the end of the day it’s a fantasy game. All of the lore is made up, rarely consistent and often contradictory. Let people play what they want. It’s not a serious game with serious lore.
10
u/Jindujun 7h ago
"Even warlocks are a stretch given their history." Which is the backstory of the Vanilla and Classic Warlocks.
And think of warriors as less of a "this is a tank" and more of "this is the normal footsoldier cannonfodder template", every race should have a simple "knight"-esque archetype.13
u/amicuspiscator 7h ago
I always thought it was dumb to say small races tanking is "unbelievable." If we want to be realistic, no one is going to come out unscathed from being hit by a giant dragon. Not even a tauren.
But then think about it relative to our own size: is it easier to catch a small dog or a mouse? If anything, if we want to think semi-realistically, it would probably be better to be a small race when fighting a raid boss.
6
u/ExtremePrivilege 7h ago edited 7h ago
People say no to Tauren rogue but yes to Gnome Warrior. I feel like it’s a similar argument.

If you want to be technical, playable warlocks don't make sense period, given the usual logic that goes for playable races. But the Abbey of Northshire just accepts them regardless for example.
They only make sense for the Undead, maybe Gnomes, if you follow the logic of "every class/race combination needs to make sense as an adventurer just starting out in X starting zone".
5
u/ExtremePrivilege 7h ago
Correct. Having a demon out in the Trade District would be a death sentence.
But Orcs should and would be even more sensitive about this.
•
u/a_hundred_highways 4h ago
I would absolutely LOVE for warlocks to be slightly the odd ones out in their factions -- you start level 1 in a different place (a creepy basement ritual in the capital before you run to the regular starting area maybe lol) and your demons are attacked on sight (or chased off) by friendly city guards.
Would be a giggle if everytime you walked to town the guards would run off your imp without realizing you were the master. "Sir, look out! There's an imp behind you! I'll handle this!"
I'm sure there would be lots of glitches and potential for abuse and weirdness (getting a demon in an inaccessible spot to constantly aggro guards for example) but it would be so #flavorful....
•
u/MoonAttempt 2h ago
The tavern where warlocks train in Stormwind is one of the best pieces of worldbuilding in vanilla tbh. I would love more of that.
•
u/Friendly_Diet_7463 1h ago
I would kill for an EQ1 style "super evil faction" punishment by the NPCs where warlocks, regardless of race, could only start in a certain city (Undercity for Horde, for example) and be KOS in the others without a rep grind.
But without other EQ1 penalties to make death meaningful it would quickly turn into another Retail-style rep grind for no reason.

u/CIeaverBot 7h ago
Even warlocks are a stretch, given their history!?
Dude, Orcs are in lore the OG warlocks. Warlocks are practically fel-corrupted shamans. Gul'dan and Ner'zhul are the poster boys of warlocks (and bad decisionmaking). Both are Orcs.
Maybe you confuse it with the Blood Curse. Breaking free from that had nothing to do with cutting Orcs off from warlock powers, though.
4
u/Randvek 7h ago
Have you ever played Warlock on the Horde? Orgrimmar NPCs are fairly hostile to you and one admits that the entire class is on thin ice and only welcome in the Horde by the grace of Thrall, who only actually wants them there so they can be watched instead of left to their own devices.
He’s not saying Orc Warlocks don’t make sense. He’s saying playable Orc Warlocks don’t make sense.
2
u/CIeaverBot 6h ago
He’s saying playable Orc Warlocks don’t make sense.
He's literally not saying that. Apparently he meant to say that. Which is rough, because it's rather easy to express that sentiment, yet there is not a single word about the distinction between what should be possible for a race and what should be playable for a race.
Are you the same guy on an alt account, or why do you feel so strongly about this?

Feel free to point out what would imply a misunderstanding. It would be an ExtremePrivilege to have such a distinguished mind share its invaluable thoughts.
0
u/ExtremePrivilege 7h ago
Warlocks should absolutely 100% not be tolerated among Orcs. Two shaman became warlocks and nearly destroyed their entire race and planet. Being an Orc warlock would be a death sentence to be public about. The fact that Orgrimmar has a cleft of shadows is unthinkable.
This should have been obvious from my comment. I even explicitly said “given their history”. But Reddit is illiterate.
3
u/CIeaverBot 6h ago
I think that's just a case of you thinking something is implied while writing without any context to specify your general statement. Not a lack of understanding for anyone else. Orcs having the ability to become a certain class is something very different from it being generally tolerated by society. It's easy to construct a lore context where it's a group acting in secrecy. Or a group under constant supervision, only tolerated because they use their abilities for the common goal. Which is quite literally the Warlock situation in OG. So when you write
Even warlocks are a stretch given their history.
it's rather logical to assume you're talking about general access to the class for a race in terms of ability, not how you can justify it in the societal context of the lore.
Keep in mind that we're all strangers on the internet. No one can reasonably assume the great genius and lore-knower that is hidden behind your name. And when in doubt, randomname123 is more likely to know less than more. So there is no point in acting insulted when someone makes a rather obvious correction to a statement that makes little sense without being in your head at the time you typed it.
•
u/Kagahami 4h ago
I think it's one of those things where they were bound into orc culture from the get go by the influence of Gul'dan and the Shadow Council and that cultural grip just never let go.
Classic is a little more morally grey with its faction design. Warlocks assassinating public officials, Druids doing work for Fandral who we discover isn't using all that morrowgrain to open a bakery, Rogues being sent to assassinate liabilities and loose ends, Mages conducting frankly openly dangerous experiments and forcing the player to clean up their mess afterwards...
Warlocks fit into that quite neatly.
4
5
u/BiggusTippus 5h ago
Honestly playable warlocks in general were a huge stretch in Classic. You mean you just came off a major Legion invasion only a few years ago, and you are allowing warlocks to walk your cities and represent your faction? You mean to tell me the Horde accepted warlocks after their recent incident with Mannoroth's blood, not to mention a bloody dreadlord as the Forsaken's second in command? The Alliance is just going to accept people who summon demons after the Legion just used the Scourge to take out every major nation north of Silverpine and then slaughtered the survivors until the Scourge and the Forsaken finished them off? Are none of the faction leaders afraid a warlock might lose control of their demons and spark some minor invasion?
Compared to warlocks being playable at all, I don't feel like tauren paladins are that egregious. Maybe it's about time they give different flavors of the same class some different customization on their spells to further emphasize how they are not your typical light worshipping paladin or whatever. No class is in greater need of this than paladins considering how controversial it is any time any race that isn't a Light worshipper gets the class.
•
u/a_hundred_highways 3h ago
Could've been more flavorful indeed, although its not like it feels weird in the context of WoW solely, demons in WoW itself are sort of "just another problem" and not especially more of a threat than Scourge, trolls running rampant ot the AQ insects...
But it wouldve been fun if the different races or factions had different demons to summon, at least appearancewise, with some lore explanation for why these were "ok demons" -- for undead it could be that these are varimathras' spawn and under his command to serve you...for orcs it could be "wild demons" who live in RFC's depths, flame spirits not actually under the legion's control...flaming voidwalker is an easy idea...for trolls it could be "tormented ancestor demons" that are dangerous but just because theyll attempt revenge for wrongs suffered in life, not end the world...gnomes just dgaf about consequences and summon demon demons...and humans...maybe shouldnt be warlocks lol, cant think of anything plausible there.
I dont mean that all the summons would be super different, that seems visually confusing...just like, the orc ones are a bit redder and flamey, the troll ones have a few random voodoo type held objects/clothing items added (which could be randomized like the names), the undead ones could have a subtle chain collar thing on them bc theyre varimathras's crew, with gnomes keep basic demons.
The notion of troll demons holding random things is kinda killing me...like your imp can randomly be holding a fish, a stick, have a voodoo mask on, etc, and it's set that way after the first summon like the name. I think people would literally play to level 3 and reroll if they didnt get the one they wanted lol. It would be hype I think.

u/Dazzu1 7h ago
Gnomes are literally sculpted by stone and iron. While they might be small they should in all actuality sink fast for being so densely formed by earth titan daddy
2
u/Jindujun 7h ago
Tehcnically metal. Also, Gnomes are weakened by the curse of flesh and have no part of their anatomical ancestry left.
2
u/Ragebaitmyhealer 6h ago
Nah the four horseman thing isn't a retcon. It was agonizing for them, but since the very start of vanilla the Light still can have beneficial aspects and the Light is necessary to be able to cast shadow magic as well, even if it is frowned upon by forsaken society as seen in the Garments of Darkness Quest from Vanilla.
and ngl characters like Leonid in vanilla make Forsaken Paladins one of the easier to accept roles as well because the outline was already there.
2
u/Syfogidas_HU 7h ago
Even warlocks are a stretch given their history.
Hahahahahhaahah, what?
2
u/Jindujun 7h ago
I think he's not saying that warlocks make no sense but rather they shouldnt be in a playable faction.
Something I'd say I agree with but it's a bit late to change that what with 22 years of them being in game. The background lore of Warlocks and them being a hated occupation on the planet is precisely the reason i intensely wish they'll never add Necromancers. Cause if Warlocks are hated then Necromancers are flagged as kill on sight according to lore.

•
u/a_hundred_highways 4h ago
Onyxia is about 1000x bigger than an orc and 3000x bigger than a gnome...there's clearly some "warrior magic" or other fantasy business going on for either of you to have a chance.

u/tethysian 6h ago
Instead of going deeper into the different cultures and identities of the races, they're doing the same thing retail did by throwing it all out the window. It's really discouraging.
One of the reasons people still like the classic lore is because it goes back to before Blizz stopped caring about keeping it consistent. The game isn't even out and the first thing they do is say "fuck the lore".
•
u/RaspberryNo7640 3h ago
You should, legitimately, not post online until you read 20 books and take a college class on writing.
You unironically just argued that "Instead of going deeper into the different cultures and identies [by expanding upon Tauren religious practices and what their dual gods are and symbolize] they're - throwing it all out the window."
You should seriously just shut the fuck up. You don't think before you speak. It's embarassing to the rest of the community.

1
u/Zeathian 6h ago
Honestly they should make unlock quests/rep grinds for players to get classes beyond the initial ones. They could have little stories and lets us get to know the class trainers better. Blizz should make them blue, so they stand out more.

The problem is that sun =\= light. If tauren wants to worship the light and wear plate, it can be written in. But if they write that they use sun instead of the light, they're going against established lore, at least indirectly.
•
u/volinaa 4h ago
UD cant use the light, yet they can be priests, its because their priest are shadow only, for gameplay mechanics they can use the complete toolkit. trolls have a strong connection to shadow too.
while orcs could be mages because they can be warlocks, its pretty dumb tho, I give you that.
0
u/tethysian 6h ago
I can accept Troll priests, but who even came up with orc mages? In vanilla's timeline no less. 😩
It feels like they put even less effort into the new class/race combos making sense than Cata did. It's honesty frustrating because retail's lack of care for the lore is one of the primary reasons I stopped playing it.
4
u/Xarophet 5h ago edited 3h ago
Did y’all even play Vanilla? There are orc mages in the Blackrock and Dragonmaw clans lmao, you literally fight them in the game
•
u/tethysian 4h ago edited 4h ago
Those would be warlocks and using the powers they got from the legion, so they're not a part of Thrall's horde.
•
u/Xarophet 3h ago
Never said they’re part of Thrall’s Horde. I just said orc mages exist. They’re not warlocks. Bloodaxe Evokers cast Arcane Bolt, Blackrock Sorcerers cast Fireball and Flamestrike, and Blackwing Mages cast Fireball and Arcane Explosion. Those are orc mages.

u/viotix90 7h ago
I like the DnD approach to things. Lore-wise, there might not be many of a specific raceXclass but every single combo should be allowed for the player character as you can always create your own character backstory.
Gnome druid? Learned to appreciate nature from the Night Elves after Hyjal. Orc paladin? Was raised as a child in an internment camp before being saved by Thrall and there was a kind paladin who treated him well. And so on and so forth.
3
u/igotsmeakabob11 6h ago
FYI, WoW was developed during, and was heavily inspired by, DnD 2e and 3e, primarily 2e. In 2e, only certain races could be certain classes (and race also limited max level in different classes). ONLY humans could be paladins. The only type of mage gnomes could be were illusionists. Etc etc etc
-2
1
u/tethysian 6h ago
The reason this isn't a thing in WoW is because it's an MMO where the world comes before the player. You don't get to be special -- you get to play a class that's typical of your race and contributes to the outward perception of their culture and traditions.
Every playable character in WoW is supposed to add to the worldbuilding and immersion of everyone else who is playing. That's a core principle of WoW's game design. Individual player power fantasy is a retail principle.
You can't have all the nice things about classic like the world feeling large and dangerous and immersive if you take out all the reasons it feels that way.

u/Proud_Guardian_6937 2h ago
Race/Class combos are just selective. With certain class combos, the lore can be bent and stretched to allow Orc mages, gnome priests, goblin shaman, tauren paladin etc that really don't make much sense. But then arbitrarily races like Kul Tirans or Worgen haven't been able to be paladins since their release, despite them being a human light-worshipping knightly culture that has fought alongside Paladins and used them in lore for years.
•
u/FatPagoda 2h ago
Troll Priests are a Wacraft 3 unit. As for Orc Mages, one has to remember that the old lore (War 2 and 3, and vanilla) for Mages and Warlocks had them both drawing on the Twisting Nether for power, it was merely the degree to which they did and the type and inherent danger of magic that they used definied them as Mages or Warlocks. So an Orc who became a Warlock could also become a Mage.
Whereas there's basically no grounds for Tauren becoming Paladins without jumping into Cata era lore.
