Analysis [OC] The FCS Blue Bloods Chart

[If you just want to look at the chart, it's down in the comments]

The "Blue Bloods Chart" is used in various college sports to determine who the sport's blue bloods are. What a blue blood is isn't officially defined, but it's usually teams who've been consistently among the best in a sport over a long period, while also having some championship level success. A blue bloods chart has a program's total weeks ranked in the top 25 on the X axis, and total weeks ranked in the top 5 on the Y axis.

The FBS version of this chart is found here. The FBS blue bloods are identified as Alabama, Michigan, Nebraska, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Texas, and USC (though Nebraska has been seriously slipping the last 15 years).

I've created a spreadsheet which has every FCS media poll going back to the beginning of the subdivision in 1978, which has allowed me to find the data needed to create a similar chart. The catch is that because many FCS teams have either left the subdivision, or have joined the subdivision at some point over the years, not every program has the same number of seasons in the FCS. For that reason, merely charting total weeks ranked can misrepresent the quality of a program.

So the chart that I've created and posted in the comments instead uses a program's % of weeks in the 25 and % of weeks in the top 5. I think this rate based method is a better representation of who the best programs have been. Because it's a rate stat, it needs a minimum sample size, which I've set at 150 weeks of FCS competition (around 12 seasons). That means many newer programs are not present here.

To answer the question of who the FCS blue bloods are, it's a bit complicated. The fact is, North Dakota State has been so so dominant on a level matched by no one else that putting them in a category with the other blue bloods isn't really fair. They should really be called a purple blood, or something. But for the purposes of this post, we'll throw them in with the others. When you look at the chart, the other top programs seperate themselves from the rest of the subdivision, but while Nevada is in that blue blood area of the chart, I would argue that they are not a blue blood because they never won a championship. The other schools in that part of the chart all have at least two championships.

So with all that in mind, the FCS blue bloods based on the chart are App State, Georgia Southern, Marshall, Montana, North Dakota State, and South Dakota State.

Obviously this is not the objective answer (there isn't one) but it is a fun discussion to have.

To me, the most obvious schools not present are James Madison, who were pretty dominant for a period and won two championships, and Youngstown State, who won 4 championships in the 90s. You could certainly argue in favor of them being blue bloods as well. I'd argue against JMU because being a blue blood is usually defined by relatively sustained excellence, but JMU spent their first ~20-25 years in the FCS being a peripheral power at best. I'd argue against Youngstown State because their peak was relatively short, and they've been good but not great throughout most of their history.

Thanks for sticking with me and reading- this was a fun project that took a while. Once again, the chart(s) and data are posted in the comments.

Analysis We need to ban domestic stadiums

• Upvotes

Frankly, dome stadiums are an affront to God. He gave us the great outdoors to play football in and we respond to this by building domes? It’s pure heresy.
There are also strategic advantages to playing outside. Imagine if you will, having a team from the south playing outside in the Dykehouse in December. They’d freeze their asses off!
Lastly, we need to address the voodoo that comes with them. It’s just unfair, as I’m sure Montana State fans can also attest to.
Thank you for reading.

Analysis [OC, kinda] The FCS Belt | 2026 Update

For those unfamiliar, college football tracks something called the CFB belt. When Rutgers defeated Princeton in the first ever college football game, Rutgers held the belt until they lost their next game, a rematch against Princeton. Then, Princeton held the belt until they lost, and so on. The history of that belt has been tracked all the way to the present day. Currently, Notre Dame holds it.

A similar belt can be tracked for FCS football. Because the first season of FCS football saw many teams play their opening game at the same time, the earliest objective point to begin competing for the belt was the first FCS championship game, which was won by Florida A&M. The FCS belt is exclusive to the FCS, so it's only at stake when two teams both in the FCS play each other (FBS, D2, NAIA, etc schools are not eligible to hold the FCS belt).

The history of the FCS belt was last tracked through the end of the 2017 season by u/Cyclopher6971 in this post. I decided to update the history of the belt through the present season. I've included the full chronology of the belt in this post, but this spreadsheet also includes a few other figures/lists around the belt, including leaderboards for total weeks holding the belt, longest streaks, and more.

If you don't want to go all the way through the full history, the current holder of the FCS belt is Montana State. This isn't that surprising- because the FCS uses a pretty inclusive playoff, the team who wins the championship usually ends up with the belt, but definitely not always- there have been 11 seasons where someone other than the national champion held the belt at the year's end (most recently in 2010, when James Madison beat William & Mary to claim the belt in their second to last game, but finished the season 6-5 and missed the playoffs).

Unsurprisingly, North Dakota State held the belt for by far the most weeks (97) and had the longest streak of defenses (32 games, 2018-2021).

Below is the full history of the FCS belt. Successful defenses counts the number of weeks a team holds the belt after the week they claim it.

Analysis An incomplete timeline of NAIA over scholarship Division I wins

After NAIA Louisiana Christian defeated Northwestern State last night, a lot of publications and journalists claimed this was the first time a scholarship Division I school had ever lost to an NAIA team. This is definitively false. Unfortunately, FCS and even more so NAIA were absolutely horrible at recordkeeping their history before the last few seasons, so it's tough to find previous instances of NAIA over D1 wins.

After some research and being corrected on Twitter, here is an incomplete list of NAIA teams who beat scholarship Division I teams:

  • 1979 Presbyterian defeats The Citadel 21-13
  • 1988 Mesa State defeats Montana State 41-10
  • 1993 St Ambrose defeats Western Illinois 27-25
  • 2003 Edward Waters defeats Savannah State 34-28
  • 2005 St Francis (IN) defeats Indiana State 42-10
  • 2007 Edward Waters defeats Savannah State 24-7
  • 2009 Sioux Falls defeats North Dakota 28-13 (UND was in transition from D2 to FCS, but was playing an FCS schedule)
  • 2009 Webber International defeats Savannah State 35-20
  • 2010 Lambuth defeats Georgia State 35-20
  • 2011 St Francis (IL) defeats Georgia State 30-27 (OT)
  • 2026 Louisiana Christian defeats Northwestern State 42-37

There's honestly probably more that have been lost to the sands of time, but these all for-sure happened.

Analysis Takeaways from FCS Title Game

One of the craziest college football games I have watched and I have seen a lot of them. Here are my four takeaways on the game.

  1. Special Teams Matter. They matter a lot. We saw what happened with the field goal attempt (should have gone for it on 4th and 1) and the PAT. Never underestimate their importance.
  2. Montana State blew it. Until they didn’t. Illinois State fell apart in the end on special teams and that final play. Tommy Rittenhouse played the game of his life and I feel for him. Apart from special teams, the blitz on fourth down was deja vu to the Texas-ASU playoff game last year. That DB on the prior play who dropped the title clinching INT is going to have nightmares about this game.
  3. To be a good winner, you really have to win ugly sometimes. 9 false starts is unacceptable in the national title game. Nearly choking the game away in regulation is unacceptable. However, thanks to Lamson and Taco Dowler’s heroics, Montana State prevailed.
  4. Taco Dowler. The Man. The Myth. The Legend. I have watched him tear up my team and he’s something else. He should never have to buy another beer in Bozeman again.

That is all folks

Analysis Undefeated and winless teams across the FCS after week 3 (2026)

With the Ivy League having started play this past weekend only Grambling is in limbo, and we have 33 teams that have yet to lose an FCS game. On the other end, there are 19 teams that have yet to get a win of any sort (my team unfortunately included after Abilene Christian at last got a win for this year), and 15 more that have yet to have a Division I victory of any sort.

Analysis Undefeated and winless teams across the FCS after week 5 (2026)

Man, that is quite a dangerous time to be ranked, isn't it? Nine undefeated teams, one of which in the #1 FCS, has been knocked down. And to my relief, the team that beat them is finally out of the winless category. Also worth mentioning that #9 Tennessee Tech had succumbed to the cannibalism plaguing the SoCon elite. The undefeated and winless categories now sit at fifteen teams apiece (of which five of the latter have yet to win any game).

Analysis The Haters Guide to the UAC

Well, if no one else is going to do it.

Time to discuss the FCS version of the Big XII. A solid conference with plenty of good programs, and one loud mouth Texas school attempting to buy a title and relevance.

Last year saw the conference take a step back. After managing to put 3 teams into the playoffs the year before, only 2 made it last year. This would not have been a big deal if the Southland, the main rival for southern supremacy, hadn't manage to sneak in 3 of it's teams. The hope is to not only get back to being a 3 bid conference, but to also supplant the Big Sky as the number 2 conference. However, the loss of Southern Utah to the Big Sky and the lack of a consistent semi-final contender may puts some water on those plans. Although them taking Utah Tech helps.

Can the UAC assert itself as the predominant southern conference AND send a team to Nashville? Lets meet the contenders and see

Abilene Christian:

The downside of doing this in alphabetic order is that I have to start with you bastards.

Despite what some other schools may claim, you finished alone atop the conference for the second year in a row last year. While your 45 year old starting QB decided to banish himself to portal oblivion, you managed to replace him and several other pieces with a top 10 portal class. In addition, you managed to keep basically your entire offensive line. So, your run heavy offense should still be as good as last year.

But, before you starting partying and sneaking sips from the hidden flask you have, know that there ARE question marks on defense for you. And in a league that's filled with high powered offenses, that can be an Achilles heel. The three-peat is yours for the taking if you figure out that side of the ball, though.

Either way, you're still getting bounced in the second round. Also Aaron Watson only has 3 songs that are worth listening to. The rest are mid.

Austin Peay:

One air-mailed throw.

That's how close you were to being the conference's third playoff representative last year. Normally you would tar and feather a QB for such a mistake. But the QB who made that throw happens to be CHRIS. FUCKING. PARSON. The kid started out OK but, as last season progressed, it became clear you may have found a Walter Payton dark horse. This was made all the better when you managed to keep him from the prying eyes of the FBS. And then on top of that, you went out and got a top 5 portal class to build around him. Like many teams in this conference, you do have questions on defense. But Parson may be flat-out good enough to overcome those.

You have all the pieces to be the top dog in the conference. Perhaps even a semi final team. And all along the way, your fans will be chanting how they really want to go take a piss.

Central Arkansas:

Remember when you were seen as one of the better teams in the conference? Hell, at one point you were seen as the team that would get the UAC over the hump and into semis. Last season was about as ugly as your field. 2-6 in conference and 3-9 overall.

And unfortunately, things don't look much better this year. You've brought back two of your top receivers, but they have no one to throw to them. While the rest of the conference either retained their quarterback, or made splashes in the portal, your QB room remains silent. There could be a homegrown talent emerge, however. And you will need them to if you want to get get out of the basement.

But, there is one thing you can look forward to with certainty this year. You won't have to play Utah Tech.

Eastern Kentucky:

Behold! The only team in the conference with a national championship. The problem is, those titles are so old that the Kentucky Colonel people actually care about was alive to see you win one of them. And he died in 1980...

To your credit, you have been a solid team in the conference. Consistently finishing near the top and making playoff appearances 2 of the last 5 years. You're also probably the only member of the conference who understands what the word "defense" means. Unlike the rest of the conference, however, you have yet to learn what the word "offense" means. A massive question mark at QB leaves you in a similar level of worry as last year. You may be able to knock one of the top teams and get yourself into the conversation. But I wouldn't bother making room in the trophy case.

Also, for gods sake, shrink the your midfield logo.

North Alabama:

While Central Arkansas may be celebrating Utah Tech moving on, it brings you nothing but dread. They've been the team keeping you from being the weak link of the UAC for years. Now that the backstop is gone, all eyes will be on 4th year head coach Brett Dearmon to get you back to the heights you saw in D2.

You managed to grab a top 15 portal class, though. So there is some hope that you can improve and at least climb up into the mid-tier. But that will mean nothing if you have the same amount of injuries you had last year.

Seriously, did you guys fire your athletic trainer to afford that new stadium or something?

Tarleton State:
"Are they legit?"

That question applies to last years squad and your claims of a "Co-championship". The answer, in both cases, is "no, they are not".

The path to Nashville was wide open for you last year, and you fell flat on your face because your quarterback can't run 6 yards. Granted, there may have been Papal chicanery, but you shouldn't have been in a close enough game for that to matter. To make matters worse, you lost the vast majority of your starters on BOTH sides of the ball to graduation.

And yet. Despite looking as though you may regress heavily this year, you respond by going out and signing not just A top portal class. But THE top portal class in the country. Every position saw at least one top 20 transfer come in to Stephenville. You even stuffed UND in a locker by taking their top receiver after eliminating them.

You roll into the year with a squad more than capable of winning the conference and finally reaching the elite status you so crave. But it will all depend on your portal guys gelling together. You are either bound for Nashville glory, or you're just the next UIW.

You still lose to ACU, regardless of which route you go.

West Florida:

Other than whatever the fuck Chicago State is doing, you hold the honor of being the newest member of the FCS. You've been hailed as a solid pickup by every pundit. And it's not hard to see why. Less than 10 years of sponsoring football, and you've already won a D2 national title. You bring a solid fan base, access to the Florida recruiting market, and you've shown a willingness to invest via the massive upgrades to your stadium.

It goes without saying, though, that there will be growing pains. You'll have to go through the 3 year transition period that CAN stifle momentum. And on top of that, you'll have a new QB under what is basically a new offensive line.

Can you evolve into a contender? Or will you just be fresh meat?

One more thing. Who the hell named your mascot "Argie the Argonaut" when "Jason the Argonaut" was right there?!

West Georgia:

Despite still being in your transition period AND having to face all 3 of the top teams in the conference back-to-back-to-back, you still managed a respectable 4th place finish last year. Your reward for this was having your head coach fuck off to Mercer with half your roster.

The good news is that you were able to do the same thing they did and steal most of Presbyterian's roster. They were a fairly solid squad last year. So you may be able to avoid getting sent to the basement. Of course there is also the renewed rivalry with West Florida that may be able to light a fire under your squad and program.

Time will tell if you manage to continue the upward trend you've been on...or if the wolves catch a bad case of mange.

Overall Outlook:

Austin Peay, ACU, and Tarleton all look to be the main contenders for the title. Regardless of who wins, the other 2 should be able to make cases for at-large bids. After that is where things get tricky. The thing about this conference is that anyone can beat anyone. If Central Arkansas or UNA knock off any of those three, it wouldn't surprise me.

As much as I want to pick Tarleton to win it, Austin Peay has given Parsons too many weapons to work with in comparison to last year.

Here's to another year of this wacky ass conference.

Analysis Undefeated and winless teams across the FCS after week 4 (2026)

At last, we have nobody in limbo, with Grambling picking up an FCS loss to be among the 15 technically winless. The outright winless is becoming a good deal less crowded, with nine remaining. Meanwhile, on the other end of the scale, we have 24 teams that have yet to lose an FCS game, and there are guaranteed to be two teams knocked off next week.

Analysis Undefeated and winless teams across the FCS after Week 6 (2026)

Well, there's quite a lot of upheaval among the "undefeated", since we've got two spooky upsets that took place at a dome; Flagstaff had kept showing themselves to be a tough place for Montana to play in, while North Dakota travelled from the comfort of their own dome to their own undoing against Northern Iowa. As of this writing, only eight FCS undefeated teams remain, and the chart will remain because there is one potential undefeated matchup remaining should Lamar and SFA keep their undefeated runs. Only a few of those that had yet to get a Division I team just did so, so now we have four truly winless and eight that only beat sub-Div I opposition.
