Ruined by Technology Youtube replacing comments with AI summary

Post image

Sliding the comment card left and right both shows AI crap instead of just the comments. Just give me human interactions ffs.

Hoo boy, I can see it now on certain videos...

AI Summary - Viewers agree: Dat ass

u/pudgehooks2013 Sep 02 '26

You know why this is happening right?

It is literally the real life version of newspeak from 1984.

Less person to person interaction. Fewer people speaking. They can tell you whatever they want in the AI, it doesn't have to be true or accurate.

They make it more difficult to talk to people. Over time, people will have more difficulty talking. It is already happening.

You don't need to actually look at results on google to see if they are accurate, the AI just tells you what it wants you to know.

50

u/doughnut310 Sep 02 '26

And eventually the people who speak up will be ostracized and outcasted, banned, removed from society online with no outlet to speak because nobody will speak in person because of mass surveillance in every home, car and street.

19

u/pudgehooks2013 Sep 02 '26

We are basically at that already.

If you mention certain things on reddit your post will be deleted, and you get banned. I don't mean illegal or whatever things.

It is intentional because these companies are burning through cash to develop it. They need to demonstrate to shareholders that usage of their models are growing to justify the costs.

Modern day investors don't care if stuff is good. They don't care if it works. They don't even care if people like it. They actually don't even care if people use it.

They only care if the perceived value of the company goes up. That's it. They want to buy shares low and sell high.

They don't care if the company is set up for long-term success, as long as they can sell their shares for more than they bought them for. In fact, if the company crashes after they sell (especially if they can short it right before the crash) and they can buy back in at a lower price again, that's great for them.

Forcing AI into things builds investor hype. It doesn't matter if it's good or it works or anyone wants it. Saying "we added AI to our products" is enough for the stock to go up.

Investors like hearing "AI", so we get AI.

u/Massive_Town_8212 Sep 01 '26

Really like that "perceived value". SpaceX talked a big game about mining asteroids for nearly infinite money, along with also folding Twitter and Grok into the company, and apparently that makes them the most valuable company on the planet ever? Even though they're not really showing any actual growth?

110

u/Low-Condition4243 Sep 01 '26

Stock market is just a scheme for capitalists to gain ever growing power and form monopolies on everything. We’re at the stage now where monopolies are buying out monopolies.

15

u/Massive_Town_8212 Sep 02 '26

To be fair AND balanced, it's not a monopoly, there are 3 companies per industry.

14

u/AmbiDenxter3 Sep 02 '26

Oligopoly, not a good thing still

6

u/Thesa_Arde Sep 02 '26

If corporations are people then they are also allowed to form polycules if everyone consents. This is what liberals want. /s obviously

14

u/TooObsessedWithMoney Sep 01 '26

I'm reminded of events covered in movies such as the Big Short or Margin Call where everyone is fine with smelling their own farts because they make fat stacks because of it.

This is not sustainable.

28

u/Jaded-Asparagus-2260 Sep 01 '26

The whole stock market is a fucking pyramid scheme. Buy something from a poor fucker to sell it for more to a different poor fucker.

12

u/blazze_eternal Sep 01 '26

They only care if the perceived value of the company goes up.

And they want it to go up as quickly as possible! Stability is an afterthought, or even worse a weakness implying stagnation.

7

u/thekrone Sep 02 '26 edited Sep 02 '26

In fact a lot of them will just ride the wave until it seems like the company is going to nose dive, then cash out and short it.

They'll pressure the board into making decisions which might cause the stock price to jump short-term, but will hurt long-term viability of the company. Then when the pressure they applied to make bad long-term decisions starts to hurt the company, they'll cash out before the stock tanks and buy shorts so they profit from the stock tanking as well.

And then if the company doesn't go completely under and starts to stabilize, the investors will buy back in while the stock is low in order to do it all again.

It's all about making their own personal line go up as quickly as possible. They do not care what gets destroyed in their wake.

22

u/ARM_vs_CORE Sep 01 '26

The chase for consistent unending quarterly growth at all costs unironically is what will end human civilization. Infinite growth is impossible and the reckless pursuit of it at the cost of the environment, the climate, and society will be the end of us. Trump is a cancerous symptom of our broken society.

I personally think capitalism is great and that we should be allowed to invest in companies.

That being said, I also acknowledge that we are in a form of late-stage capitalism that is so deregulated that it no longer serves a purpose that can be compatible with environmental sustainability. We have seen the SEC, EPA, CFPB, FTC, OSHA, etc all defanged and sabotaged over the decades. We also have outright corruption and bribery via corporate PACs and lobbying.

Capitalism works best in a well-regulated environment with a government that actually gives a shit about the environment, consumers, laborers, etc.

39

u/Massive_Town_8212 Sep 01 '26

I like being able to buy stuff too, and would also like to invest in things I believe in. However, my issues with capitalism of gestures broadly, all that is by design. Attempt to regulate capitalists and they'll just take over the government, like they already have. Give it more time and we'll see the return of robber barons shooting strikers with their own private armies.

Hell, we almost had an actual fascist coup d'etat because of the New Deal. FDR saved people over companies, and capitalists wanted his head. That was partially aided by Prescott Bush, granddaddy to Dubya whose dad's foreign policy fostered the conditions for 9/11 to happen and allowed him to implement the Patriot Act and send thousands of our people to their graves in decades of constant war.

9

u/Teehus Sep 02 '26

That is just the logical consequence of capitalism. Capitalism in its core is about growth and getting as much money as possible. Sure, governments can put boundaries on it, but the companies will try their best to undermine those regulations or get rid of them, and if other countries don't implement similar regulations their companies will (most likely) outperform those who have to abide regulations.

Investing in companies these days just keeps that behaviour going, the investors want to see their money grow and that (mainly) happens through grows of the company. The shares normal people buy are so small percentage wise that as an individual you can barely even claim to have any stakes in the company. Not to mention that you didn't actually invest in the company, the original buyer did, you just paid the previous person who owned the stock money.

Capitalism is a deeply flawed and unsustainable system based on greed. If you have morals you'll (most likely) never make it to the top.

6

u/robotmayo Sep 01 '26

Capitalism works best in a well-regulated environment with a government that actually gives a shit about the environment, consumers, laborers, etc.

I mean then its no longer capitalism at that point which is why capitalist are very against regulation.

6

u/composedofidiot Sep 01 '26

They forget that pure capitalism requires a level playing field.

They know AI is unprofitable for them and that no one wants it. But instead of just letting it go, they try forcing it onto us to make the money they burn seem worth it

All we can hope is AI becomes so unprofitable for these companies that they decide to ditch it

4

u/Beneficial-Otter Sep 02 '26

and hopefully the stocks market will crash and everything will be affordable again

25

u/Tsamane Sep 01 '26

And when there is a toggle, its very hidden opt out, not a opt in.

24

u/BigBananaBerries Sep 01 '26

They're trying to normalise it to the point we're dependent on it & any critical thinking is subscription based. It's sinister AF what they're trying to achieve.

10

u/HighKing_of_Festivus Sep 01 '26

They need to increase the usage metrics to justify the costs to investors

4

u/Unoriginal_Man Sep 01 '26

That's what killed me with Google recently arguing for their need to expand datacenters because they saw a massive increase in usage, and all I could think was "well yeah, you just replaced Assistant with Gemini on millions of devices with no way to opt out".

→ More replies (1)

9

u/coffee-bat Sep 01 '26

i'm pretty sure it's sunk cost fallacy. they can't admit how much they invested into this shit, so now they're shoving it everywhere to "justify" the wasted money.

7

u/ichigo2862 Sep 01 '26

Look how many people are forced into using it!! Give me more billions please

6

u/VideoGameAficionado Sep 01 '26

Trying to justify the cost, and value of it all.

6

u/Sombomombo Sep 01 '26

Makes too much sense how these AI designers are stereotypically single.

4

u/kubin22 Sep 02 '26

it's so they can show share holders how everyone is using it

3

u/TheBlanc2 Sep 02 '26

Even fast food chains apps deliberately shoving ai 'features' just so they could get hold of more money

3

u/schmurfy2 Sep 02 '26

As a genius said recently: "if we make it an opt-in, nobody would do it", it sums it well 😞

5

u/im_not_creative123 Sep 01 '26

Their hope is that enough people when forced to use it, will get used to AI "helping" them with things like search, so eventually they can sell it to them

2

u/Windfade Sep 01 '26

If it's like most inconvenient changes, the youngest generation will hit the Internet in five or so years filling the top comments with "Why are you still complaining? This is the best way to do things and you know it."

2

u/INfusion2419 Sep 01 '26

People on the internet are guided by comfort and ease of access, if its there right in front of you, you'll use it. Most people still don't use adblockers, and 99% of people still use youtube, despite there being big talks of movement in the later 2010's all that came of it was banned youtubers moving to alternate sites and becoming even more unknown.

2

u/-2Braincells Sep 05 '26

But guys if it was opt in no one would opt in, so they need to force it into everything. Otherwise how would they be able to justify the millions they put into ai? /s

3

More like "JUST EXIST WITHOUT CLICKING THE DENY BUTTON IN THE NEXT 0.01 SECONDS TO TURN ON AI NOTIFICATIONS !" and the deny button is one pixel big.

30

u/Joltyboiyo Sep 01 '26

Fuck a toggle, they can just piss off with AI in general.

9

u/TheWaslijn Sep 01 '26

If its a toggle people won't use the AI slop. And if they don't, then Google can't go "see how many millions of people are using AI??" To get more investment money

The funny thing is that YouTube video summarize is legitimately one of the best use cases for AI. If a YouTuber is basically all clickbait or takes forever to get to the point, you can use the AI to get the important info and know where it is so you can skip the fluff.

Gotta sell to investors, and it sells a lot to say that your product uses AI even if AI doesn't make any sense in it. And it has to be very visible, so investors can see the product, notice the AI and think you are better than the rest.

2

u/x4nTu5 Sep 01 '26

It's all about being a solution in search of a problem.

2

29

u/red__dragon Sep 01 '26

That's funny because I've wondered why I needed a 30 second video to explain what 5 seconds of reading could do?

29

u/fizyplankton Sep 01 '26

But why read for 5 seconds when the author could have AI expand a small handful of facts into 30 different bullet lists, each rehashing the same fucking points in slightly different words surrounded by meaningless bloat, and then have another AI summarize the article for you, ensuring maximal generational loss of accuracy.

God fucking damn it I hate the internet now. Even if I try to click a real result instead of reading the AI hallucinations, the articles themselves have been so sterilized by AI that they're completely devoid of information

3

u/Kichae Sep 02 '26

Obviously, if you're following people on IG, moving off of it doesn't do much for you. But pixey.org or pixelfed.social are solid places for posting images, and loops.video is an interesting, open short-form video site. All three are non-commercial, can be accessed from other social sites (particularly Mastodon-based websites and Piefed-based websites) aren't going to force AI into anything, and are welcoming spaces looking for fresh faces.

Youtube also added a “feature” where if you share a video or click on a shared link, the other person can see your Youtube username/account. You can opt-out in your privacy settings, but of course by default they opt everyone in. Really scary possibility of getting your personal account doxed by clicking on a random Youtube link.

26

u/Loufey Sep 01 '26

You know where the setting is to turn that off?

39

u/slowest_hour Sep 01 '26 edited Sep 02 '26

when you send someone a URL just delete the question mark and everything after it. if you want it time stamped just type &t=n where n is the number of seconds into the video you want it to start. e.g.: https://youtu.be/yJYo2MxE2JY&t=5677 should link you to the exact beginning of the concert at the end of school of rock

edit: i don't think i picked a good example because youtube probably disables embedding on their officially licensed films, but it you just use it as a link it'll work.

23

u/PM_ME_JJBA_STICKERS Sep 01 '26

At least on the mobile app it’s settings -> privacy -> and uncheck “channel visibility for shared links”

You know, if these corporations loved free market economics so much, they should make all AI features fully optional, you know, so the market can decide if it’s actually a viable product. Which it fucking isn’t because anyone who has a brain hates that shit.

3

u/Melenduwir Sep 01 '26

The problem with the free market argument, as is the problem with all proposed political and social systems, is that most people are idiots who will put up with anything as long as their immediate desires are met.

I was in a Zoom call doing some training the other day and do they really need a constantly flashing/"breathing" animation (ironic) AI button all the time? On top of having another AI button? Then when I was flipping back to Adobe Reader for the program book do you really need to put a permanent AI button that pops up once I switch back to Reader? I'm sick of it.

may revanced guide your path

7

u/IncompletePunchline Sep 01 '26

Gotta go into the revanced settings and manually disable this dogshit though. Surprised it's not off by default.

20

u/PossuTryffeli Sep 01 '26

May Morphe be your next saviour from Revanced.

2

u/EllePearlRose Sep 02 '26

Can you get it on mobile or just desktop?

2

u/PossuTryffeli Sep 02 '26

Morphe is only for Android. The official website is morphe.software

2

u/but_why_n0t Sep 01 '26

I'm seeing this on revanced. YouTube has been testing it on and off since beginning of the year.

6

u/IncompletePunchline Sep 01 '26

Settings, revanced, player, comments. It's in there.

2

u/PossuTryffeli Sep 02 '26

Switch to Morphe as Revanced is dead.

Who even needs this feature? So annoying. I like to read the comments when I’m watching a video and it will switch to this bullshit sometimes. Is there a way to turn this off?

8

u/Popplio3233 Sep 01 '26

I swear, every Youtube update just sledgehammers its dick more and more

6

u/Madame_Mozart Sep 02 '26

Also the “Ask Youtube” bs in the search bar… sometimes I accidentally click on it when I’m trying to type in something and it’s like… doesn’t that just remove the whole purpose of a search bar??? I don’t need AI to give me ChatGPT-ass summaries and videos it thinks would be most helpful or whatever, I’ll search for those damn videos myself and decide what looks the most helpful/interesting!!!!

2

u/Tiny-Memory9066 Sep 02 '26

What? They really not want you to WATCH YOUTUBE?

4

u/mrloko120 Sep 01 '26

It defaults to comments first for me and I have to swipe to get the AI one.

3

u/vgaph Sep 01 '26

Google: We need data centers to build more compute so we can do all this cool stuff that everyone seems to hate.

5

u/dereklmaoalpha Sep 01 '26

like who tf wants to read a summary of comments, the fun part is reading each comment while watching the video

50

u/PunicHelix Sep 01 '26

I have no problem with AI and use it for work, but i don't need it shoved down my throat at every opportunity.

26

u/Lower-Sheepherder268 Sep 01 '26

Then you do have a problem with it.

It's being shoved down your throat at every opportunity.

3

u/Mental_Document2888 Sep 02 '26

YouTube, the video is right there I don’t need ai to summarize WHAT I AM WATCHING RIGHT NOW

3

u/kopetkai Sep 02 '26

I don't understand why these companies think AI summaries are a good idea. Don't they want people to interact? Post, talk to each other? Isn't that their whole business model?

4

u/Mdu5t Sep 02 '26

And sometimes if i want to click "like" an ad pops up and I like the ad instead of the video. At least it sems that way.

3

u/TuskuV Sep 02 '26

the people who steal paychecks by making useless ui redesigns might be the biggest benefiters of ai as it gives them another excuse to keep their jobs.

28

u/FoxExpress2638 Sep 01 '26 edited Sep 01 '26

pretty sure that only happens if the comments are off edit: as it turns out I was wrong and op should just swipe right on the thingy to make it go back to comments

17

u/ruet_ahead Sep 01 '26 edited Sep 01 '26

The two little dots mean you can swipe over to the comments. ...which actually works about 50% of the time. No only that but the screen shot shows there are 5,100 comments.

EDIT: Original was too harsh.

2

u/FoxExpress2638 Sep 01 '26

I didn't see the 2 dots, I also only experienced such issue under a video with comments off

8

u/Dotcaprachiappa Sep 01 '26

It says 5.1K comments, plus what comments would it be summarising if there were no comments

3

u/FoxExpress2638 Sep 01 '26

Ok yeah, I made an error

→ More replies (1)

5

u/Several_Ad_1322 Sep 01 '26

The dangerous implication is the summary depending on the client and the video will absolutely sway public opinion. Its a slimy manipulation tactic

4

u/hrl_280 Sep 01 '26

Today, I tried to download a video but it was downloaded with autodubbed track. I tried everything but couldn't download the orginal track version. I gave up. I don't why youtube is tripping.

6

u/Tiny_Profession6940 Sep 01 '26

Just use a yt to MP4 converter on google

11

u/broki451 Sep 01 '26

Doesn't matter if it's comments or AI. There all just bots anyway

4

u/Wamiwoogie Sep 01 '26

They are not "replacing" the comments, you people are hysterical

4

u/dextronicmusic Sep 01 '26

It’s not replacing the comments. They’re still there.

5

u/Intelligent-Key5821 Sep 01 '26

that has to be a glitch, usually you can slide to the comments, there is no way that that is a permanent thing that replaces comments, it definitely is a horrible glitch

→ More replies (1)

5

u/IceTrAiN Sep 01 '26

I don't think you know what the word "replacing" means...

2

u/bloke_pusher Sep 01 '26 edited Sep 03 '26

I expected this, once they started showing only selected top comments and not all comments. As you had to sort by newest, and then no longer see other top comments. Already restricting informations. This is just the next step. If they could replace youtube just with a player and AI recommendations, they'd do so.

2

u/fipachu Sep 02 '26

/img/clovmepwzzmh1.gif
time to install yet another Firefox extension to get rid of a stupid “feature”.

(i’ve already got one to disable machine translation of titles, because, of course, YT knows better and doesn’t let the user disable them in settings)

2

u/MaksimBebrov Sep 02 '26

just TAP the comments button bruh

2

u/bungerman Sep 02 '26

You wish to hang out in YouTube comments?

2

u/TestMeetings2040 Sep 02 '26

I used to daily the official client for a while but ended up going to use Morphe to patch it out. No more AI summary nor timed reactions for me.

2

u/entropies Sep 02 '26

Youtube Morphe for Android

2

u/Any-Cockroach-2980 Sep 02 '26

You can swipe and see the comments but this annoying af

2

u/Danny2Sick Sep 02 '26

These viewer comments are brought to you today by some bullshit product!!!

2

u/DaLuckyKitten Sep 02 '26

Never is there going to be a context in which I would preferr reading comment summaries on a video I choose to click instead of the actual comments. Let me scroll through the unorganized list of comments for fucks sake, not everything has to be "AI optimized" >:(

2

u/aguyinlove3 Sep 02 '26

Youtube keeps collecting Ls

2

u/Bioalienos Sep 02 '26

Like the contents aren't short enough, they make a freaking summary of it.

2

u/digging_deep515 Sep 02 '26

At this point, AI is being implemented in almost everything, which isn't really a good sign for the future.

2

u/Ragalvar Sep 02 '26

Time to spam nonsense

3

u/PuzzleheadedOwl395 Sep 01 '26

But you can still click on the comments and check them out yourself. It could be worse... Google search's AI summary comes to mind (I hate they replaced the answers menu with AI answers. One of the worst changes ever)

5

u/To-To_Man Sep 01 '26

They want to isolate you. When everyone has a personalized AI feed, search, information repository, especially one that feels better than actual human interaction, then you lose all autonomy. You think what they prompt you to think, and they let the AI figure out how.

Some people will die from depression, dangerous misinformation, and other things. But it's the final solution for the end goal of unfettered capitalism.

Imagine Wall-E, except less optimistic. People are talking and watching AI media all day long, oblivious to the world. They still work 40 hours, likely only if they are lucky, with many pulling far worse shifts. And all the junk they own and eat are of the lowest possible quality.

u/Scroatazoa Sep 01 '26

AI summary is great. When you see a clickbaity title or something that could be communicated in thirty seconds stretched into 15+ minutes you just hit the summary and move on. Just because it says "AI" doesn't mean you are obligated to hate it.

2

u/mathcraver Sep 01 '26

I hope there's a YT ReVanced patch in the works to erase this shit from existence. At least there's already one to forcibly disable the auto-dubbing.
