Currently not streaming anywhere. I'm about to buy the DVD box set on eBay.
Exit: Lithgow is amazing in everything I've seen him do. I'd also recommend seeing 'The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension'

Get em boys. Mailmen cruising along at 10 maybe 15 mph acting like they own the world. Get em...
77
u/ChaosRainbow23 Jun 09 '26
My last car was totaled by a runaway mail truck.
The mailman got out to deliver a package to my neighbor and forgot to engage the parking brake.
His truck rolled down a steep hill about 250ft before slamming into my vehicle.
The insurance guy was like, 'Who was driving?' Uh, NOBODY. Neither car has a driver.
Dealing with the govt insurance was bullshit. I had to get my insurance company to deal with it.
41
u/MobileFrosting4345 Jun 09 '26
I worked for USPS during Covid, and a guy at out office did this, but instead went through someone's fence and into their yard. He was brand new, and he drove off, went straight back to the office, and resigned. Didn't tell anyone what happened, just disappeared and left it to the resident or neighbors to report it. Don't know what happened to him, but it was a pretty messed up situation.
BTW, USPS vehicles aren't insured, they have to pay out of pocket. Not surprised they gave you the run around.
7
u/MinutesFromTheMall Jun 09 '26
BTW, USPS vehicles arenāt insured, they have to pay out of pocket. Not surprised they gave you the run around.
Always wondered what would happen if either a mail truck got pulled over or got into an accident. Thereās no license plates on those things.

I worked in auto claims for the better part of a decade, and yeah if youāre ever hit by a government vehicle just go through your own insurance if you have that option. Subrogation was always a pain in the ass with them, too.
28
u/dividezero Jun 09 '26
The look on his face seems to suggest they know each other
14
u/Important-Ad7807 Jun 09 '26
Yeah, my thoughts too. The cop has a huge smile on his face like they are just shootin the shit.
5
u/docjohnson11 Jun 10 '26
They may have a rule about exiting the vehicle on a road. They could have to turn on some lights, in my city they are yellow but they do turn them on if they are out of the car on any road for any reason.

There's actually Supreme Court caselaw saying that USPS drivers cannot be charged with anything while working. Sovereign immunity baby. That cop ain't getting nothing.

u/Unhappy_Duty_7875 Jun 09 '26
I donāt think thatās true. Our rural delivery mailman got busted for cooking up meth in two liter Pepsi bottles in his mail truck. Lost his govāt pension and job.
73
u/iamthepita Jun 09 '26
Govt aināt claiming ownership on the meth but maybe on two liter pepsi bottles and definitely the mail truck (even tho itās āhisā, it aināt really his) that probably got him into the position he was put intoā¦. Iām not a lawyer tho

This was the time Chuck the mailman was harassed in his own private domicile
9
u/pseudoportmanteau Jun 09 '26
How the fuck does that even happen? How is it so easy to cook that shit where people seemingly do it with the most basic crap they find in a landfil?
13
u/K4RAB_THA_ARAB Jun 09 '26
It's called shake and bake and its fucking insane to be doing it in a car period let alone at work lmao
18
u/Dont-be-lasagna12 Jun 09 '26
They said while working. Was your mailman cooking meth off the clock?
→ More replies (1)40
u/PaleontologistAble50 Jun 09 '26
Itās āin performance of their dutiesā which does not extend to meth cooking
5
u/NORBy9k Jun 09 '26
You're only looking at the job description for urban delivery... Meth is pretty standard on rural routes. /s

4
u/ConflictMaster3155 Jun 09 '26
Their sovereign immunity only extends to local/state traffic fines.
It doesnāt even stop them from getting a ticket, just from paying one.
2
u/QizilbashWoman Jun 09 '26
yeah but what caused that, the cops or the post office's inspectors? because those guys are in charge and are the scary motherfuckers that dudes like the CIA pretend to be
1
u/StochasticLife Jun 09 '26
Rural route delivery is different, those carriers are typically classified as contractors.

You donāt use Pepsi bottles for shake and bake, theyāre not thick enough
→ More replies (1)21
u/shotgunsam23 Jun 09 '26
I mean one google search will tell you that postal workers can and do get traffic tickets lol. The only thing USPS mentions is that they will not pay for the ticket, the worker has to.
20
u/BrbFlippinInfinCoins Jun 09 '26
can you explain this concept to me like I'm 5?
45
u/dr_jiang Jun 09 '26
The poster has it very, very wrong. There's no Supreme Court case that says postal workers can't be charged with crimes, and mail carriers can be ticketed, cited, arrested, etc. just like anyone else.
What they're trying to talk about are two different things. The first is federal officer immunity. The rule is: a federal officer can't be held criminally liable under state law for acts that were necessary and proper to carrying out their federal duties.
The phrase "necessary and proper" is the important part. A postal worker doesn't need to break traffic laws to deliver the mail, and they aren't authorized to break traffic laws in order to deliver the mail. So it's not necessary, and it's not proper.
The second thing is sovereign immunity. That's a rule that says you can't sue the government as an entity. There are exceptions to the rule, but the principle itself has nothing to do with individual employees.
17
u/BrbFlippinInfinCoins Jun 09 '26
yeah, I was gonna say you definitely can't just murder people in a mailtruck and be like "sorry bro, perks of a govt job"
thanks for the explanation
12
u/iamthepita Jun 09 '26
Sovereign immunity is basically saying you canāt sue the government for the actions made by govt employees if Iām paraphrasing very loosely or simply wrong. Someone chime in pls.
17
u/Double_Belt2331 Jun 09 '26
You are just so far away from being correct, it makes my head spin. šµāš«
Yes, mail drivers (like U.S. Postal Service carriers) can be arrested and criminally charged while on duty for committing crimes or severe traffic violations. While they are federal employees with limited immunities for routine parking or minor traffic infractions, they are fully subject to both state and federal laws. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]
Mail carriers can be charged and arrested for several specific offenses, including:
Mail Theft & Fraud: Stealing mail, intercepting checks, or using stolen credit cards found on their route is a serious federal crime. These cases are investigated by federal agents and can result in federal prison time. [1, 2, 3]
Driving Under the Influence (DUI): Operating a government or personal vehicle while intoxicated on the job is a severe violation that will result in arrest and immediate termination. [1]
Assault & Violence: Physically assaulting a customer or a member of the public on their route violates state and federal law. [1, 2, 3]
Severe Traffic Violations: While local police often issue written citations rather than making immediate arrests to prevent mail delays, mail drivers can absolutely be ticketed or arrested for reckless driving or vehicular manslaughter
Please, google before posting again. I mean come on, mail theft & fraud? Did you think that mail drivers could commit that & it was okay? Or reckless driving? š¤¦āāļø

u/Interesting_Ad1378 Jun 09 '26
No, a local Long Island mail carrier was taken off his route and moved away from customers after repeated attempted attacks on people, kicking pets, kicking peoples doors and then he drove fast at people standing in the street with their dogs, they had to jump out of the way. Ā He didnāt get fired.Ā
→ More replies (1)5
u/tacotruckcaravan Jun 09 '26
Personal anecdote as a carrier: a 4 year carrier was pulled over and had warrants while delivering. Supervisor came and collected the mail and then carrier was cuffed and jailed overnight. Worked the next day and never lost his job.
7
3
u/Excellent_Condition Jun 09 '26
This seems logically incorrect for lots of reasons. Can you cite a case to support this claim?
4
u/StillWeCarryOn Jun 09 '26
We definitely had a postal worker get arrested for OUI and hit and run not long ago while on the job where I grew up is
3
u/Free_Lunch24 Jun 09 '26
Uh yeah I don't think that's the case. Plenty of police body cam videos on YouTube of USPS drivers getting pulled over for DUIs while working.
3
u/Interesting_Ad1378 Jun 09 '26
My cousin had a mentally ill mailman who was physically attacking pets, flea, kicking things on peoples property, their doors and then tried to run over a group of people. Ā He didnāt get fired, he was moved indoors because she saw him at a different town post office.Ā
2
2
u/speedy_19 Jun 09 '26
I mean from a quick google search that is not true. They have immunity for not delivering mail and thatās it from my interpretation. There is even a body camera channel that has a usps driver being arrested for dui while on the job.

Postal workers adhere to the same driving regulations as everyone else. If they break them they can get pulled over. Probably why we donāt see postal workers driving 100mph.
89
u/Sgrobnik Jun 09 '26
And notably, those vehicles do not go 100mphā¦.

But theyāre federal employee, so theyāre vehicle has right away before anything else on the road. That officer will have quite a bit of paper work to fill out.
2
u/Smiadpades Jun 09 '26
You can. What you are thinking of is this
Only the post master General or FBI can legally require you to move the vehicle.
This was drilled into our heads during training.
2
u/Slosher99 Jun 09 '26
There's a video online of one that gets a DUI after driving wildly and admits to having drinks at a party where she was delivering mail. Pretty sure they can't do that.

It was amusing when a resident on my route backed into my parked llv, when the sheriff responded to write it up he just kept circling the vehicle ( until I asked him if he was looking for a plate). No plates, self insured, and just for kicks, practically my entire route was no parking because it was too close to a high school and junior college.

They could just be giving a heads up about something going on in the area, postal carriers see a lot. Iāve called several times because people that were on vacation had strange vans in the driveway, wandering toddlers, wandering elders, and when mail started piling up ( they were usually dead)

USPS has their own Postal Police Department right? So is this officer calling for Postal Police to perform an investigation? Maybe the officer is letting the USPS mailman know there is faulty equipment (lights) etc.
