Seeing what happened with Reignited, this surely isn't a new thought, but why can't RS3 have something closer to the OSRS approach when it comes to major changes to the game?
Not necessarily polling every update or letting players design the game by committee, but giving the community a meaningful vote or feedback stage before Jagex commits heavily to major changes.
OSRS seems like a pretty strong example that this kind of relationship with the playerbase can work. The game is thriving, and while polling obviously isn't the only reason for that, players having a real say in major changes probably helps create trust and keeps development aligned with what the community actually wants.
Sure, that takes away some of the surprise. But surprises also carry the risk of turning into disasters, and RuneScape's history has given us a few examples of that already.
From Jagex's perspective, it could also prevent a lot of time and money being poured into features that the playerbase might not actually want.
There's a pretty basic principle from agile software development that applies here: get feedback from your customer as early as possible, especially while you're building something significant. Don't spend months developing behind a curtain, reveal the finished idea, and only then discover that your users fundamentally don't want it.
Reignited feels like a pretty good example of what happens when that feedback loop comes far too late.
