3D Isometric is what we need actually
The current work on ViewPoint is truly fantastic, and this progress makes me genuinely happy.
Ever since I started playing with the isometric module, neither TPS (third-person) nor FPS (first-person) perspectives satisfy me anymore. This is exactly what we need, though it still requires a bit more refinement.
When entering a new chunk, sometimes walls that should be hidden remain visible, or areas that ought to be in view stay obscured—I’ve been bitten by zombies a few times because of this.
Furthermore, in the vanilla version, you can see inside buildings when looking through windows, but that isn't possible in ViewPoint’s isometric mode.
Also, interacting with shelves, cabinets, and crates is quite difficult. Additionally, when using the "place" command, there’s no way to see exactly where an item is being positioned.
Aside from these issues, after playing this way, going back to vanilla Zomboid is simply out of the question for me. The modders have truly taken this game to a much better place than the original developers ever did.

I genuinely prefer the artstyle of the unmodded game. I'm really glad that people are making mods to suit their tastes. I just find the original much more unique. Too much visual polish and shading wouldn't feel right.
I do agree that some of the quality of life mods would really benefit vanilla. But that's always been the case, and the devs have been adding them
•
u/Mundane_Constant_845 27m ago
I was actually worried the game might loose its style when they announced 3D characters replacing sprites.
In the end it was done really well because it maintained the art style instead of trying to be a overly realistic "this is what project zomboid will look like in 2013" style.

u/Wise_Presentation914 23h ago
"The modders have truly taken this game to a much better place than the original developers ever did." is a really weird statement. I've actually been enjoying some of these mods that people are putting out in both this game and other games (ReSkate being my favorite so far), but let's not pretend they're any crazy show of skill. 99% of all of these new mods coming out right now are coded almost entirely by AI.
Let's not put down real game developers by comparing them to what AI could produce. PZ is one of the coolest games ever, the game was already in a great place before these mods, the mods definitely added some cool possibilities/ways to play the game, but the devs should always be respected for the work they put in.
31
u/broplsbro 23h ago
People just have this weird impression that's it's modders vs devs in this community and so it leads to weird posts and comments like this one when in reality not a single one of these mods would exist without PZ and the devs, while at the same time PZ wouldnt enjoy the popularity it has without the modders over the years.
A lot of people making these posts comments are probably young and naive/don't understand how game dev and modding work.
8
u/CornManBringsCorn 18h ago
Helldivers modders and Arrowhead are also going through a very similar thing rn
19
u/Alt_SWR 23h ago
Whenever someone says something like that I get the feeling they don't actually like the game which is super weird to then even pay any attention to it if that's the case.
Like, there's hundreds of survival games out there. They don't HAVE to pay attention to this one.
14
u/Wise_Presentation914 23h ago
A lot of the people that are playing right now and talking in this sub about the mods are super new players I think. I keep seeing people saying that the only reason they've decided to pick up this game is the new mods. That's fine in my opinion, but they shouldn't disrespect the regular game or the players that enjoy it the regular way. Saw someone on a youtube short say that this game looked shitty before and now they're buying it (or something to those lines).
8
u/Alexblitz22 23h ago
THIS there is literally dayz that was years before with a whole environment designed around 3d and hd textures and both have a great detail level in it's mechanics, the devs focused in different ways around their games and what they wanted on it, they never Made a hint in making it first person and now it's the blame on not doing it? And really honest it looks amazing with some snow mods, the 10 years mod looks increíble but as i said if i wanted to play first person survival Game i would opt for day z, or days gone, or wwz(kinda), or 7days to die, state of decay, dying light.

u/Responsible-Score-34 8h ago
Yeah this community really needs to understand that building unstable mods off of preexisting architecture is much easier than integrated stable updates. The devs are great - and they are sticking to their artistic vision rather than being bullied into changing the game drastically for the vocal minority

Yall gonna be mad so me for saying this, but very little coding gets done anymore without AI. Big tech, small tech, personal projects, ect, they all use AI now. You can be anti AI all you want but genuinely consider piping down, you’re ignorant and nobody wants to hear it lol.
5
u/Himbophlobotamus 4h ago
I do not care that you're stuck in a pithy mental war against the "tribe" you dislike, so in fact you can pipe down and sit the fuck down too
The context is that the game was made from the ground up with hard work and somebody comes along with unoptimized bloated vibe code and claims they've done more than the developers ever have
Grow up

I think some of the Anti AI people are so against AI that they live in this little bubble (echo chamber might be a better word for it lol) and they think that they’re the majority and that almost nobody actually uses AI. It’s quite sad if you think about it.

And here we have it. Now it becomes about how zomboid should be. Play how you want but I think the game looks worse this way. It's fine, but zomboid has a vibe and this does not
39
u/feetfinder6 23h ago
You said it perfectly. Project Zomboid has a vibe that just doesn’t work with any of the first/third person mods imo. Anything it tries to achieve with those mods are just done far better by other games.
16
u/thomas61000 23h ago
I agree , to each their own , i prefer personally to keep the traditional look (i also am not tech friendly) so less mods the better , what i dont understand is the hype around turning a game that was unique in its look into literely every poly zombie survival game out there...if i wanna play a 3d fps or 3rd person poly zombie game ill play surroundead, its cheap and its designed to run that way which makes it smoother all together, why would i transform zomboid into something it was never designed to be as cool as it may be dont get me wrong 😅
3
u/LuckyBucketBastard7 6h ago
Personally for me it's immersion. Zomboid is a very unique zombie game in that it tries to be a more "realistic" or "immersive" experience. It tries really hard to put you in the shoes of your character; moodles, needs, traits, etc., and it does it very well. All of those mechanics together is something you don't really find regularly.
So for me, FPP elevates that immersion to the next level. It officially puts me in the shoes of my character. There's something about the iso view that just pulls me right out of that immersion, and I start to treat it too much like a game and get bored relatively quick. That's just my thoughts, though.
2
u/thomas61000 4h ago
And i appreciate you opinion 🤙 lol To me it might really fall onto actually having to try it or seeing it in real life to understand the hype around it allot better , ive always found that yeah videos and screenshots are cool but they wont give me that feeling of actually seeing it and experiencing it , you know ? And since i personally hate having to deal with computer stuff like files and shit it just ruins the interest for me. (the viewpoint mod) cause i think it looks cool , its neat to see everyones different shaders and how their version of zomboid looks i find that really cool, the first person to me is just eh lol idk why , guess ive just seen it in so many other poly zombie games that im just kinda like not surprised ? But it is cool that its on and engine not at all designed for it too , that is impressive.
-36
u/nickersb83 23h ago
Jesus fuck, how can you not enjoy the breath of fresh air it brings to the game?
12
u/thomas61000 23h ago
Jesus fuck , when did i say it looked bad or wasnt pretty ? IT WAS MY OPINION, not a fact. Zomboid to ME is very unique with its traditional iso look and art style , to ME thats perfect as it is and I PERSONALLY dont wanna change it. If I wanna play a 3rd person or 1st person poly zombie game , i have PLENTY of options and some are very very good ones at that, so why would i bother completely changing zomboid when i can just go play that ? Which are actually much cheaper then zomboid btw 😅
→ More replies (3)9
u/Winter-Classroom455 23h ago
Not the one you responded to and I'm gonna say, it's fine. I more or less just want to point out that people are now starting to demand zomboid be somthing it's not. It's fine to play it differently but now people are treating this mod as if it's the base experience. I think a lot of people don't understand that these are AI assisted mods. Unfortunately we're going to go where r/stalker went and it becomes a divide from mod lovers and vanilla players. Although it will be a bit different since zomboid is way more mod accepting. I just think it's a ridiculous insult to say vanilla zomboid is unplayable compare to these very recent mods. Again to each their own. I don't care how you play, but to start making comments on the amazing game that makes this even possible annoys me. Especially so since the devs could have just gave up and just slapped 1.0 on this a very, very long time ago.

-50
u/No-Basil3067 6h ago
Y’all are insufferable, the devs are taking long to add simple features meanwhile talented modders and AI add them in a meaningful time. I bought the game and I’m going to play it how I want regardless of what the echo chamber on Reddit says.Enjoy vanilla that still doesn’t even have climbable ladders, or basic optimization and every other basic feature that modders add.
21
u/durandaluesc 5h ago
"talented modders" and "AI" shouldn't go in the same sentence. It doesn't take talent to make an LLM do all of the work for you.
4
u/WittenMittens 3h ago
Devs have a different level of responsibility attached to what they put in the game. Every feature they add must work from day one in every subsequent update, and it must play nicely with every feature that comes before and after it.
Modders don't have this constraint. If it replaces or breaks some other game mechanic, that's on the player to deal with. If it tanks performance, that's on the player to deal with. If it makes a particular play style impossible, that's on the player to deal with.
If you want to take a break for six months and not fix your mod after an update, that's on the community to deal with. If you want to walk away completely and leave someone else to fix, optimize or improve your mod, that's on the community to deal with.
Modding is great and the explosion of modding tools is great. But so is a paid dev team with skin in the game.

u/Just_Roll_Already 4h ago
Most players like it the way it is, hence the 160k steam reviews and Very Positive rating. This is just popular right now and a lot of the long-time zombiod streamers are trying it out to get a fresh take on the game. Some of the recent content with the perspective mods is really damn fun and engaging to watch as well. Really loving Nurse's recent videos.
The OG Sims style is still superior and we all know it. It's just really damn neat to see this type of stuff being made. Really shows the passion that the community has for this game.

Honestly my first thought was, "This looks like those knockoff mobile ad games". Not trying to diss OP's work with the mod if they're genuinely working hard to make it happen, but this particular 3D style is very common for a reason, and it's not associated with high quality games. At least change the lighting.

I do wonder what the developers think that they've spent over a decade making a 2.5 isometric game only for people to completely change it lmao.
Like it's not like it's saying the game is bad, nor was it a bad idea in terms of development (smart choice tbh), so there's no real "the devs fumbled this" to the change, but just given the chance people would jump to 3D. Like what do you do with that lmfao, all your brand is built over being 2.5D isometric so can't exactly change it now.
(Also the screenshot reminds me of Ghost Master)
1
u/ch4os1337 2h ago
They probably think it's normal since modding, even to this level has been a thing forever.
1
u/DahLegend27 1h ago
“To this level” is a bit of a stretch. AI is making all of this possible. I would imagine the devs probably feel a bit concerned for the future of the industry/their jobs with all of this.
1
u/ch4os1337 1h ago
That's a different question. Crazy mods have come out before LLMs that completely change games to the same degree that we're seeing now. It's just way faster and easier to do now.

Amazing how you describe not one, but three! borderline game-breaking bugs:
I quote:
When entering a new chunk, sometimes walls that should be hidden remain visible, or areas that ought to be in view stay obscured—I’ve been bitten by zombies a few times because of this.
Furthermore, in the vanilla version, you can see inside buildings when looking through windows, but that isn't possible in ViewPoint’s isometric mode.
Also, interacting with shelves, cabinets, and crates is quite difficult. Additionally, when using the "place" command, there’s no way to see exactly where an item is being positioned.
Then you polish that all off with:
The modders have truly taken this game to a much better place than the original developers ever did.
Lost for words.

u/RiceSpecial8446 6h ago

u/N0den5 Axe wielding maniac 6h ago
I actually gave Oldpoint a try because I originally didn't like Viewpoint's pov and I thought it could be fun but it was borderline unplayable to me.
Click to walk didn't really work, placing items didn't really work, looting basically didn't work half the time, you basically had to swap to original pov to do anything other than look at buildings, as much as Viewpoint's not for me at least it does what it says on the tin. This just straight up doesn't work.

Yes... While I wholly disagree with what OP is saying, this is typically how people discuss new and in-progress content that relies on feedback and understanding from the user base. I legitimately do not understand what the point of your comment is. Nobody is calling these mods perfect and OP is talking about the features and limitations of a mod they are using.

People spammed out week one posts without any of them getting removed from the subreddit months ago. Idk why this mod is for some reason being treated differently
Doesn’t change the fact that the mod has overtaken Zomboid. Videos of the mod get millions of views and YouTubers outside of the Zomboid community have started talking about the game because of this mod. The only people that are covering their heads and refusing to talk about it is this subreddit. Which now makes up the vast minority of discussion around Zomboid

It’s only this subreddit that’s being cry baby’s about this. Search Zomboid on YouTube and every new video with 200-500k plus views is project viewpoint with nothing but praise. Everyone outside of this very tiny subreddit loves the mod. You guys are just being contrarians for the sake of being victims

God I feel so bad for the devs that a portion of the community is just basically trying to steal the project from them at this point and claiming they’re entitled to it to boot.

Is there anyway to get this and the traditional first person/third person from viewpoint to work together? I feel as though this is meant to replace the other viewpoint modes.

Oldpoint is the mod that introduces this feature, and it synergizes with viewpoint. SHIFT+O to switch between the three modes. Oldpoint even has an option to only turn it on with a keybind, although in my experience that doesn't work. You have to use the SHIFT+O function to cycle through all three if you want iso style. So I've just been living without and playing first/third person instead.

I thought when they said build 42 was going to come with newly rendered 3D models for their 3D placement, it would come with some upgrading of the textures, to look something like this.
This screenshot here is from a mod called ViewPoint or is ViewPoint the FPS overhaul?

i recommend searching "viewpoint" on the workshop and adding other viewpoint mod add ons, like 3d fences, better models, etc

Thanks for the direction.
Can't believe someone downvoted my "thank you" above. I hate those people in these subs.

its probably the people who are for whatever reason really triggered with the 3d mods, they're pretty insufferable. you might need to set up zonbiebuddys engine, its really easy, a quick yt video should help

I couldn't get this working 😩 what mod was it? Old point? I tried everything I could to zoom out but it wouldn't let me! So i was stuck with the overhead camera being only like 5 feet above me, not very playable. I really wanted to give this a shot though.
Vanilla is still the only way I can play this game seriously though. Vibe coded mods can't match the real thing. They are fun for a bit though 🙂
