We get energy when the food is digested in stomach, the small intestine gets the minerals from food and cells burn the glucose.

u/Fresh-Educator-4210 12h ago
It’s crazy how the body turns what we eat into energy without us even thinking about it, the human body is amazing!

It's a system, designed by evolution, like the Avatar cycle, you have all your ancestors digestion struggles behind you and can even digest metal.
2
u/Profitablius 8h ago
Depends on the metal, tbh
Anything that dissolves in hydrochlorid acid is good to go though!
1
u/Hallonbat 10h ago
Yeah but consider that the body wouldn't have any energy to burn if we didn't give it food.
1
u/AlphaI250 10h ago
And we wouldnt have food without our body giving us energy to go get it, probably, depends how lazy you are

And your body pulls blood and oxygen to your stomach and digestive tract to help process it which causes sleepiness

My Polish uncle had a saying "Every Polish person after eating only thinks about lying down". It seems it doesn't only affect Poles.

u/tomangelo2 12h ago
Body requires energy to digest it, at this time you're sleepy. Once it burns through you get that energy.
3
u/astralseat 9h ago
So you're saying you need to boff the food in as a slurry to get the energy instantly?

Only when u have not ate in like 14+hours does it give u energy LOL
8
u/necrophcodr 11h ago
For most people that's hopefully never. But no, it does give you energy. Just eat appropriate amounts.

There, I mostly fixed it for you.

todays eating consists of meals wayy to big for our needs with most of it being carbohydrates and fats. You also should move a bit after eating for digestion. Eat smaller amounts, good food, lean more into protein and you have more energy and for me: NO food cravings immediately after eating something carbohydrates. I am also guilty with toast and nutella in the morning and after an hour you have hunger again. With quark I could go till noon

u/MansaMusaKervill 12h ago
That’s why you shouldn’t really eat past 80% fullness, though i agree it’s hard to resist.

You're eating too much volume, OR you're eating foods with too much sugar (or both). You're body has to expend energy to digest food, and when you intake too much sugar, your blood insulin spikes, then plummets, causing food comas. The insulin spiking is dangerous because doing this over the years can lead to diabetes. Which will be a massive pain in the ass for the rest of your life.

Modern food is designed to be quickly digestible and to make us fat.
It follows the same principle of Oxycontin addicts. They take their daily dose, crush it into a powder and snort it. Voila, they get addicted.
They use the same method for food. They process it until it becomes easily digestible, add flavor enhancers and then we eat it. It digests quickly, our body can't use it all at once and we store it as fat. We get an insulin spike and then we feel tired and also we may feel hungry again.
Thus begins a vicious cycle that results in us gaining weight over the years and unable to lose it even with exercise.
Since the start of May this year I quit all processed foods. No high fructose corn syrup, no food with ingredients I don't keep in the kitchen. I've lost 40 pounds. It was literally the easiest thing I have ever done.
Was it expensive? Nope. Dirt cheap. A couple of Costco chickens each week, broccoli, cauliflower, other veggies and fruits.
No breads or pastas. No cookies or ice creams. But I can eat all the fruit I want. I can steam veggies and add some butter and Parmesan and seasoned salt.
Anyway, I've lost an average of 7 pounds a month. I'm not trying to do calorie deficit but I probably was in a deficit. The thing is hunger doesn't bother me because it doesn't come with fatigue and insulin shocks.
I spend about 50$ a week for groceries for myself. I'm down to 205. I call it The 70's Diets because I only eat food that could have been eaten in the 70's, but only if it is made exactly like in the 70's. Twinkies used to be made with cream, flour, and eggs. Now it is hydrogenated oils, preservatives, and HFCS. Doritos used to be stone ground corn. Now it is highly processed corn with flavor enhancers. Ice Cream used to be cream and sugar. Now it is HFCS and mouth feel additives to mimic cream. Then it is whipped with air so you can spoon it out faster. There is no barrier to eating it other than cost.

There is a huge about of food options out there. Not all foods are heavily processed. If you feel like you don’t have any agency or feel out of control around food, or feel like you have a food “addiction” (not a thing), reach out for help with an eating disorder specialist.
Also, do you eat anything with agave syrup? Which is days branded as a healthier sweetener alternative these days. Well, agave has a higher fructose content than high fructose corn syrup, which is just comparatively higher in fructose than regular corn syrup.
I’ll add that you do you, but restriction (cutting out certain foods or food groups entirely) VERY commonly backfires.
Healing the relationship with food is a WAY better idea. Also, many things in moderation are OKAY. Labelling foods good or bad only increases stress and rumination around food, which feeds into the disordered eating loop of guilt, compensation, then back to restriction, then over-indulging/bingeing, etc.
Your lifestyle diet or whatever isn’t right for everyone.

Did you just feel a need to post a contraband position to be relevant for a moment.
All generalizations on your part and you don't address the specific my specific points.
Are you just one of those people who wants to derail every discussion and make it about you?
Gross.

All blood diverted to intestine for digestion? Sudden sugar high? Must be one of these.
1
u/MoarVespenegas 7h ago
It is the blood sugar spike and it's not good for you.
You should eat less carbs and do light exercise after eating to avoid it.5
u/Infectedtoe32 8h ago edited 8h ago
People giving stupid responses. Eat a full carb meal with zero protein or vegetables. Have a giant bowl of pasta with toast, use Alfredo sauce, and then have cake or something as dessert. You will crash from the carbs. This is one way diabetes is self discovered. This is not normal to happen after every meal, it can be normal after a carb heavy meal (as described, and like Thanksgiving), but still should watch it.
Edit: carbs do almost directly break down the exact same as sugar too. Ingredients will read 2g sugar, 85g carbs, 0 calories and people act like it is healthy. Meanwhile it is pretty much 87g of sugar.

u/Oriste_Adeus 7h ago
Yes carbs break down the same as sugar since carbs are just long chains of sugar. However simple sugars spike your blood glucose faster and higher and cause maximal insulin to be released to antagonise it whereas carbs have more of a slow release of energy that doesn’t peak your insulin as much.

Rest and digest. The parasympathetic nervous system controls the functions associated with “relaxing”.
As opposed to the sympathetic nervous system which controls “fight or flight”; it controls the body’s need to get energized and alert.
They work antagonistically to maintain our body’s homeostasis

Maybe because the “hunt” is complete? Kind of like, more energy when hungry equals better hunting. Less energy after eating because rest is needed and food/hunting is not necessary for the time being.

It takes energy to ingest it all, so you already running low use a little more before you get that big deposit of energy

u/abribra96 7h ago
Dont sit on your ass all day, exercise regularly. Have your meals balanced (protein source, bunch of veggies, healthy fats and then some carbs), not just mainly carbs. Also take care of your sleep hygiene at night (you know, when you’re actually supposed to sleep).

Well, the macronutrients or even ATP, are just molecules that store energy in chemical bonds. So food gives you energy stores, which are used up when your body needs them. You feel sleepy/tired after eating because blood flow is directed toward your digestive organs instead of skeletal muscle, your sympathetic system activity is reduced, and the meal triggers insulin which causes increased tryptophan levels (relative to other aminoacids) in your blood, cascading into increased melatonin synthesis which is a sleep hormone. Also, yes, I am fun at parties.

That myth is really that alive? Carbs aren't the issue, tons of low quality carbs, low quality fat and too much calories eaten by people that have zero move in their life is the issue
2
u/dantemp 6h ago
It's not a myth bro, it's my reality. Used to absolutely die in the afternoons, since I started avoiding carbs I'm at full power all day. What's good quality carb?
1
u/Illustrious_Cod_5212 6h ago
It's not, you don't understand diet, correlation isn't causation. You can it carbs and feel great it's about meal composition.
1
u/dantemp 6h ago
compose me a meal then

u/Illustrious_Cod_5212 6h ago
Base for most meals: Chicken breast/skinny meat/legumes/skinny fish with few grams of olive oil, boiled potatoes/rice/pasta/groats, and half plate of your favorite vegetables, at least 150g. Whole should have at least 30g of protein and about 300-800kcal depending on gender and activity.
1
u/dantemp 5h ago
how much rice or pasta?
1
u/Illustrious_Cod_5212 5h ago
Depends on your daily calorie intake and preferences. It should be about 1/4 of the meal. 1/4 protein and half plate of veggies.
1
u/dantemp 1h ago
1/4th of a single meal is about what I do now. I've not given up entirely on carbs but I used to lunch a full plate of rice or pasta and then feel sleepy for the next 5 hours. This is still reducing carbs massively, most people often have entire meals of only carbs, that's what I argue against.

if youre really feeling that way, get tested for diabetes. Source: Im type 2 diabetic and feel this after eating carbs.
3
u/ArmedSquirrel101 9h ago
Not necessarily it happens to me and I'm not diabetic.
1
u/Infectedtoe32 7h ago
There is a difference in “happens sometimes” and happens “after every meal”. A very carb heavy meal with little other nutrients and protein is enough to make anyone feel this. On the other hand, if you have an average meal of Chicken breast, potatoes, broccoli, and a salad with some sweet dressing (basically anything other than oil and vinegar) and notice you feel tired. There is a very high chance you are diabetic or at least pre diabetic.

Biologically Food is supposed to get you into relaxation state and humans are suppose to work for it, prime example of reward system at work.
