Kinda neat how adding birds makes a difference in terms of making a world feel real

2.0k

u/Wbcn_1 Apr 23 '26

Yeah. Even when you consider that birds aren’t even real.

I've only recently stumbled on it and it's become a quick favorite for me.

A sensible chuckle lasts a lifetime :)

u/Official-POTUS Apr 24 '26

Danger 5, the show it's from, is also incredible.

There are about a million more parts of it that could be iconic gifs

I mean they have French people in the entire assassin's creed series, shows you how much a fantasy world it is.

30

u/FermisParadoXV Apr 23 '26

Except, crucially, the one set in France, where for some reason they're all cockney.

18

u/kaalaxi Apr 23 '26

First thing I did was switch to French with English subs lol

Not this templar theory that birds are actually assasin sect members in disguise again. I know the noises they make sound a lot like a camera shutter and they have recharging stations spread around their patrol areas and that the full fledged members make an "eagle cry" when they download the data from the other birds......okay maybe you are onto something.

No one else noticed it made the water reflect what would have to be like a 600ft bird?

5

u/DeBean Apr 23 '26

lol I was going to post this. Bird makes screen space reflection fuck the image. I would've expected Ubisoft to support ray tracing and use that for water reflections in their demo.

Nah, I caught that fuckass screenspace reflection immediately. Is this in UE5? Idk any other engines with SSR that shitty.

Did people think the original looked bad?

Edit: just wanna add I’ve watched the full 8 min or so trailer and it actually is very faithful to the original like colour/art style wise so I’m all for it.

335

u/Financial-Brief-1038 Apr 23 '26

I like how the original looks

99

u/LiftedRetina Apr 23 '26

I like the over exposure and harsh lighting in some spots. It feels appropriately tropical.

45

u/Somnambulist815 Apr 23 '26

Considering how much media these days seem scared of blown out highlights and deep shadows, I welcome it

→ More replies (6)

17

u/raiin901 Apr 23 '26

It’s just a little over overexposed though especially on a hdr tv. It can be blinding but not in a good way lol

16

u/rabbid_chaos Apr 24 '26

That's still "appropriately tropical"

6

u/Lobo2209 Apr 24 '26

Attempts at realism should be to an extent.

→ More replies (5)

3

u/Dangerous_Savings739 Apr 27 '26

Indeed! Living in some countries with a different climate, I can say that for the southern one, it was neatly captured in the original game - when the sunlight makes the surfaces overexposed until you put 3-4rd cat sunglasses. It literally blinds you - harsh, burning your skin and eyes SUN. That's it!

→ More replies (5)

41

u/mat477 Apr 23 '26

I was thinking the same. Ive never played the original (only ever played AC1) but the remake looks brighter and more alive but I like the dingy grungey look of the original.

7

u/Financial-Brief-1038 Apr 23 '26

Then you have the inverse-- Warner Archive releases an old animated release saturated in color and people say they messed with it. Nope, that's how the 35mm master looks. Dark Turner color-grading and deteriorating station copies became the accepted standard. Lol.

Yeah honestly what this comparison did for me was make me think damn the original game looks pretty darn good for being 13 years old

→ More replies (4)

68

u/Roids-in-my-vains Apr 23 '26

Its 13 years old lol and was made for consoles that released 20 years ago

15

u/Kafanska Apr 24 '26

Just because it is old, doesn't mean it looks bad. While obviously graphics have advanced, the advancement in the last 13 years is nowhere near the jump from 2000 to 2013. Many games from 13 years ago look more than good enough today except in the eyes of people who think anything without ray tracing is utter crap.

In short - Black Flag still looks great.

→ More replies (6)

16

u/EphemerallyViolent Apr 23 '26

Does that mean bad? Or old/dated? Because many games from 10-15 years ago were far enough along graphically that the differences are, even if noticeable, arguably minor.

Other games went for an actual art direction instead of photo realism and hold up even better.

With the amount of "Damn, can't believe x game released in 2015 and looks THIS good" posts on Reddit, I'm gonna go out on a limb and say the people that think these games look "bad" are likely either a minority or are brain-rot AI chuds waiting to upscale their goonbait into Maralago faced aryan trad-wife bullshit while screaming SIX SEVENNNNN

→ More replies (4)

21

u/Imwaymoreflythanyou Apr 23 '26

You ain’t wrong, I guess I just don’t require more and more realism to think a game looks good. I mean Dark Souls 1 looks amazing to me so I’m probably not the norm lol.

8

u/Tha_Sly_Fox Apr 23 '26

Might be generational but I actually don’t like the look of hyper crisp ultra realistic games. Idk if uncanny valley or what but I prefer less realistic or less super crisp graphics

5

u/EphemerallyViolent Apr 23 '26

Having an art direction means your game is timeless. Going for hyper realism means that when you can spend another $2000 on one part in a rig strong enough to render two extra freckles with 5% more polygons and eight more Ray of Gods coming out of nowhere to lensflare your not-a-lens eyeballs for the CINEMATIC QUAALLLLITTTYY -

You know, it goes quite a ways. The having an artistic style, that is.

18

u/MilleryCosima Apr 23 '26

I think most people want to be the kind of person who ignores graphics, but I think it has a bigger impact on most people than they think. Above a certain level, I can adjust to whatever, but there's no substitute for the wow factor of great art direction + shiniest graphics.

Ghost of Yotei still leaves me breathless every time I look at anything, which is something I don't get from older games.

10

u/ForgotMyPreviousPass Apr 23 '26

I can live without top notch graphics, and without story if the gameplay/systems etc are top tier. Say, dwarf fortress, soulash 2, ostranauts, RimWorld, Stardew Valley, to name a few. Gameplay first, we have movies for graphics and books for stories.

Now, the wow factor in Crimson Desert, in Ghost of Tsushima (graphics are quite standardish there though, but art direction is great), in CP2077, that is undeniably there and I enjoy it a lot.

I'd say art direction is several orders of magnitude more important than the graphics themselves though.

4

u/MilleryCosima Apr 23 '26

I agree with most of this (I disagree on stories as games enable some unique approaches to storytelling that you can't get in any other medium). Good graphics are a plus, not a requirement.

3

u/boodabomb Apr 24 '26

Every time anyone even mentions graphics, the immediate wave of responses are unanimously about how it’s not as important as story and gameplay. And… maybe. But they’re still important and play a huge role in a game’s presentation and immersion. Everyone acts like graphics are some overhyped element, and that might have been true once but now they’re absolutely under-appreciated (from what I’ve witnessed).

2

u/Imwaymoreflythanyou Apr 23 '26 edited Apr 23 '26

That’s fair, I like how the Ghost games look too.

→ More replies (6)

2

u/LeonidasSpacemanMD Apr 23 '26

Yea agreed, at some point even games attempting realism become a time capsule for that generations graphical capabilities and aesthetic sensibilities

Those assassins creed games are like quintessential xb360/ps3 era games to me, there’s a lot of interesting design choices that serve to make those games look more realistic when they came out. Now with modern graphics those choices become more like the defining aesthetic of the game

No, I go through it again every couple of years, but it'll be nice to go through it again with a bit of a fresher look.

As for those that think it's madness to pay for the same game with updated visuals, I agree but I'm so underwhelmed with the current gen of gaming I have plenty to spare in my gaming pot.

Edit: I've just watched the full video, there's a lot more than just how it looks. I'd suggest if you haven't watched it do so.

2

u/Darth-Felanu-Hlaalu Apr 24 '26

Literally a post whining about Kay Vess being ugly and then they used the most unflattering, poorly timed, glitched out images possible. Could make Lara Croft ugly with the shots they used.

18

u/kangasplat Apr 24 '26

Their biggest crime lately is making a ton of expensively produced, kinda lackluster, mediocre games.

7

u/KingGorillaKong Apr 24 '26

Hiring multiple dev studios and teams to all work in pure competition with each other for 2 to 3 years and then axing 90% of the teams to go with the most "analytically friendly easy to monetize" option. Which often times ends up being a really sub-par or lackluster game.

Look at Skull & Bones dev history. And look at how many more recent teams were let go.

Ubisoft survives not because they're actually hitting sales targets. They're living on the Canadian and Quebecois government subsidies and bursaries. With Skull & Bones, they managed to live off other foreign government subsidies and bursaries as well.

This. That company is beyond redemption and while I love some of their older stuff, they'll never get a full price purchase from me again.

6

u/Snekbites Apr 24 '26

I'm gonna be honest, this is exactly the reason why I trust them, or rather, can take a calculated guess that it's gonna turn out well.

obvi, I'm not gonna pay until I can witness it not being a fuckup, but the fact that they got Kenway's VA back, are remaking the "best" AC, instead of starting from the bottom, hell the fact that it was made from the ground up instead of just putting an HD remaster, fixing tailing missions, etc etc.

It just tells me that they've put this one into the DO NOT FUCK UP category, not because of respect like RE2R or RE4R, but because they can't afford to fuck up, they're on the ropes, they're desperate, they want you to like them again.

For the last 10 years they've been coasting on the name of AC while ruining it steadily, that goodwill has officially ran out it seems, they will not fuck up, because they CAN'T fuck this one up.

2

because Black Flag hasn't aged at all in 13 years

This is stupid, who argues this? Of course Black Flag aged.

For me the problem isn't whether the original aged at all but rather whether it aged enough to justify buying the game again for a couple of tweaks and prettier graphics

My answer is "nah". Maybe I'd pick it up for like 10 bucks, which coincedentally is the price the original went for on a Steam Sale recently

7

u/BipedClub684000 Apr 23 '26

If it was just a "couple of tweaks and prettier graphics" then I would agree with you, but from what I've seen, they're improving combat, stealth, and hunting while also adding roughly about 6 hours of extra content, some of which was cut from the original game due to hardware limitations and time constraints.

2

u/Enlightened_Gardener Apr 24 '26

Someone in Ubisoft loves that damn game. I love it, it was my first AC title, and I was warned here that it was an excellent pirate game, but not really an AC game. It is an excellent game, and I wonder who in the C-suite is keeping it alive.

2

u/FUTURE10S Apr 24 '26

If they fixed the foliage LODs not at all matching the high-fidelity models (as in entirely different bushes and trees popped up when you were close enough) then I'm down to buy this, I loved the setting

→ More replies (2)

2

u/StephenFish Apr 24 '26

I can't possibly know, but my assumption is that this resync isn't meant to be targeted to people who already own the game. It's possibly a way to breathe new life into an older game and convince people who've never played it to pick it up. They might not have done so otherwise because there's so many new games to choose from. But now, it "feels" new with reusing probably 95%+ of the original game.

2

u/DarkyErinyes Apr 23 '26

Played through the AC2 trilogy, AC3 and Black Flag last year, definitely still holds up very well. Only had some slight issues due to newer drivers ( had to downgrade ) and change a setting in the "ini" file.

But from a playing experience with the pirating, dialogue and overall world traveling it's still superb. Graphics still look very good from a distance only close up obviously a little dated.

So from all I have seen I have a few points of criticism:

  1. They seem to avoid showing the sun in the remake footage. In the original the water so nicely reflected the sun and waves refracted light in shades of green but they don't show that in the remake.

  2. The foam on the water looks blurry especially bad on the big wave they showed. In general the water appears to be less sharp.

  3. The color of the water is darker now. I'm not sure if I like that as the blue water brought that Caribbean feel.

  4. I liked the brightness of the original. The remake looks like the player now has sunglasses on.

  5. The shanty in the original really sounded like the people on the ship were singing, especially on the travel speed view. But in the remake it sounds like you are listening to a studio recording.

Can't wait to pirate this one 🏴‍☠️

14

u/Advent105 Apr 23 '26

Never did finish the original game and haven't played it for 5+ years, so definitely looking forward to this

3

u/Tha_Sly_Fox Apr 23 '26

I didn’t see the point of finishing, the draw of the game was sailing the seas and attacking ships as a palpitate and then selling your boot in port while listening to sea shanties

Yeah it looks much better and it's arguably the most-popular AC game, not sure what's so exciting here unless you've never played Black Flag before. Ubi cancels the Sands of Time Remake and we hate Ubi but they reveal this AC IV "RESYNCED" and all of a sudden they're back. Ubi makes us all fickle.

43

u/Adavanter_MKI Apr 23 '26

They aren't back. It's one game. I plan to go right back to ignoring them. I just love Black Flag... and that's what this is. Only prettier with a little more content and the weakest parts toned down.

2

u/ExtremelyDecentWill Apr 23 '26

I've never played it before, so it's exciting.

As you said.

2

u/Spaniardman40 Apr 23 '26

Yea they cancelled Sands of Time because that would not been nearly as profitable as this remake

2

u/Any-Calligrapher2866 Apr 23 '26

Considering how long the game was in development he'll I think it was unfinished.

6

u/T0asty514 Apr 23 '26

I chose the simple route.

I just don't use their service or buy any of their crap generic reskinned products anymore.

24

u/Circle_Breaker Apr 23 '26

I choose a simple route.

Just buy things I'm interested in and ignore things I'm not.

8

u/SluggishPrey Apr 23 '26

New creative ideas: Risky business decision, Nostalgia bait: Potent drug with plenty of addicts

3

u/WriterV Apr 24 '26

Oh my god, it's a fun fucking game. For fuck's sake, not everything's a life or death situation. Just buy it if you like it, otherwise move the fuck on.

I haven’t touched an AC game since the OG black flag. I’m excited to revisit this.

3

u/ewynn2019 Apr 23 '26

I've tried a couple, the vikings and Egypt, but they didn't feel right.

Go try Rogue. It hits the same as Black Flag. I haven't stopped the main missions for a bit and have just been exploring and fighting other ships.

It’s really weird we have reached a point with graphics and I have reached an age in years where 1/2 the time I can’t tell if a game was made 1 year ago or 10 years ago and 1/2 the time I play a game these days and in the 1st 10 mins my reaction is like “wow these graphics are amazing when I was a kid we dreamed of this level” and then 40hrs in Im like “actually these graphics kinda suck too”.

5

u/evil_houseplant Apr 24 '26

Just reminds me how good the original looked.

8

u/renome Apr 23 '26

The original still looks great imo. The draw distance is the only thing that seems pretty bad by modern standards.

6

u/Questionable-Qs Apr 23 '26

I want to see the water

3

u/JohnnyBeFit Apr 24 '26

So it’s going to look like how I remember it? Neat.

3

u/Bunph8108 Apr 24 '26

I feel like I’m in a minority of people who is excited for this game. Apparently some genuinely new contents with side characters that might change the game or, hopefully, add on to it is in the remastered. In addition to the multitude of new weapons, combat mechanics and quality of life changes they seem to have added, I’m hopeful. There have been a lot of buckets of water being added to this tub and if it holds all of the weight I expect it to, I might buy it at full price if it works on launch for everybody else.

Why does og look better

4

Because it doesn't. It looks great, but come on. I was so ready to bash on Ubisoft but give credit where credit is due

They are trying to sell a "deluxe" edition of a 10 year old game lmao, I'll wait for a $10 sale

8

u/Diegolobox Apr 23 '26

No. It's a true remake. They connected the cities to the sea to have a huge, cohesive world, they added more story arcs, improved the weak points, improved the stealth and combat system as well as the graphics.

3

u/DaiiPanda Apr 24 '26

These people dont care.

5

u/ConradBHart42 Apr 23 '26

I'll be staying true to the spirit of the material.

2

u/OmaC_76 Apr 23 '26

Never did play Black Flag so quite glad of the remake.

2

u/Cursewtfownd Apr 24 '26 edited Apr 24 '26

To me it’s like you’re just adding a whole bunch of visual depth that almost is overwhelming. Maybe it’s my adhd…

When are game studios going to come to terms that optimal graphics are somewhere in the middle between Lara crofts square tits and ultra real lifelike graphics.

Because a game that looks like real life is no longer a game. It’s a simulation. A game is different. It’s a world you escape to from reality where your imagination polishes what is not polished. Original content, original mechanics, original art work presented in a unique form differentiated from real life.

Last thing I want to do after spending all day in real life is play a game that looks like real life. Remember, games are an escape.

The most popular games over time have relatively low quality graphics - but amazing art.

5

u/Smelly_Dingo Apr 24 '26

I mean, some of the most popular games of all time include racing games, sports games and some shooters, all of which are, at least graphically, as close as technologically possible to realism.

It's all a matter of taste.

It is true that, for ANY game, art direction > graphics, but that simply means that a super realistic game also needs very, very good art direction to really flourish, just look at the very VERY many titles who have use state of the art lighting systems or quixel megascans or whatever other crazy good textures and materials snd somehow manage to look incredibly flat and boring anyway.

Escapism doesn't inhetently have to do with how close to reality a game looks, obviously YMMV, to me for instance the graphics are irrelevant, I'm all for story driven experiences that allow me to take a step back or to the side and see another world through someone else's lenses, learn of it and their struggles, and when I'm back in my own bring something with me, some kind of lesson or takeaway, take Undertale for instance. Not exactly a graphical powerhouse, that. At the same time, something like RDR2 which is much closer to realism is also something I would sink (and have) a great many hours into.

2

u/phelpsfilchat Apr 24 '26

Did see other cinematic and its a downgrade in terms of mood setting

2

u/AmateurHetman Apr 24 '26

GR wildlands recocained?

2

u/Crocoloco__ Apr 24 '26

It will be a pleasure to play it for free once it's cracked

2

u/scotty_booooy Apr 24 '26

say what u will about ubislop but u cant deny theyre worlds are pretty

2

I spent so many hours just sailing around listening to sea shanties! Love this game.

2

u/trejohn23 Apr 24 '26

I can't believe how much I played this game when I was in college and a girlfriend in 2013 lol I wish I can play video games 200+ hours now

2

u/cabezatuck Apr 24 '26

I will say after watching a lot of footage it appears to be a very faithful remake. I think Ubisoft knew they had to nail this one or it would blow up in their face. Need to see more at launch as far as performance goes, but at this point I’m very excited to be a pirate again!

2

u/Talkin_Out_My_Ass Apr 25 '26

Yes yes this is great. But how are the shanties

ngl resynced looks how I thought it looked back then

2

u/Rude_Sugar_6219 Apr 26 '26

It’s funny how you can put two images side by side, claim one is better, and everyone will believe it. The soul has completely been sucked out of this remake just like every other. Oblivion, RE4, all of them somehow go unnoticed just because some because of a list of specs says so.

2

u/CaliKindalife Apr 26 '26

There's no way in hell I'm paying $70 for a 13 year old game thats been "resynced". I got Hell Divers 2, Arc Raiders, and Windrose all for $110.

6

u/CyberpunkYakuza Apr 23 '26

Ubi being Ubi, I'm gonna have to wait for user reviews before I even think about getting this. And, even if I do decide to get it, I'll wait until it goes on sale after a year. Or with Ubi's current track record, a few months hahaha. Hell, even if it ends up being good, giving these clowns money stings, so who knows? I have the original on disk still sooooo.... guess we shall see.

3

u/Vhett Apr 23 '26

Ubi being Ubi, I'm gonna have to wait for user reviews before I even think about getting this.

This shouldn't be particular to Ubisoft. For any game you should always wait for user reviews. A game can always have a poor launch riddled with technical issues despite how much they promise.

Never pre-order.

Not with AC shadows, and that's using the same engine as this remake.

I have little hope.

Always stay skeptical, especially of scumbag companies like Ubisoft.

Lmao the hate Ubi gets is ridiculous

They have one of the most well refined and most optimized engines in the industry for open world games

Makes the games run at solid native 1440p (upscaled to 4k) 60 FPS in a base PS5. All their games with a next gen upgrade look fantastic on PS5

The first shot the reflection on the water of the bird is off. Idk what it is but somethings not right about it

5

u/Westdrache Apr 23 '26

it's a screenspace (reflection) artifact.
The bird obscures what's behinde it on the screen and the reflection looks off, because the SSR is just reflecting the whole ass bird in full size onto the Ocean, when it doesn't make sense.

3

u/Major_Dood Apr 23 '26

TL;DW: Instead of focusing on making new games, we remade this one because we love burning money and we were bored. Now pay us $100 for this game.
