humankind hiccups πŸ˜… The Absolutely Massive Kidney Stone I passed yesterday

Post image
19.6k Upvotes

A let's say... interesting thing to witness come out of your body.

Edit to address some FAQs:

I am okay. Honestly I was only in severe pain one day.

Yes it hurt. Mostly when it was moving from the kidney to the bladder

I hydrate well at a minimum of 64 oz of water per day.

I had a full metabolic work up after my first kidney stone and the best the urologist could tell me was it's stress related.

I used a strainer, I didn't reach into the toilet.

Dimensions are roughly 15mm x 5 mm x 4.5mm at the thickest region.

humankind hiccups πŸ˜… Tongue tissue after eating too much Sour Patch Kids

Post image

As title says, I ate too many sour patch kids and I believe the citric acid caused the top layer of tongue to die and peel off in this interesting pattern. No pain whatsoever throughout process. No bleeding either.
And for anyone curious, it was a small 12 oz bag I believe. I rarely ever eat candy and I forgot to brush my teeth that night so I’m assuming that’s why it happened in the first place. Picture of my tongue right afterwards somewhere in the comments

humankind hiccups πŸ˜… Well this aged like milk.

Stumbled upon this while clearing out the attic.

She visited my primary school in Edinburgh shortly after releasing TPS. The girl in front of me (my friend and train-to-school comrade) was Southeast Asian and has an incredibly elaborate sounding name. When Joanne screwed up her face when my friend gave her her name for the signature, I laughed. This is how she decided to sign my copy.

I was laughing at you, JK.

EDIT: It’s on EBay.

Thank you, kind barista for saving me from ruining my own morning with a cup of oat milk slush (it tastes exactly like what you would expect)

Update: I called the Starbucks to say thank you for not giving me an oat milk slushy and they were very kind. They are aware of the delivery app glitches and figured that was the issue for my order. If you modify your food in delivery apps, double check everything before you place the order! Or you might end up with a bag full of disappointment.

humankind hiccups πŸ˜… Acid reflux can come out of your eyes.

Post image
11.4k Upvotes

Kind of. Short story long.

I have Silent Reflux, it's like regular acid reflux but it fucks you up especially bad because it's basically the aerosol spray version of stomach acid and doesn't always show the same physiological damage like esophageal erosion or ulcers. So it can be missed on endoscopies and other tests (especially if you're fat because then that's obviously the problem.)

Depending on the force behind the reflux, the vapor could reach as high as the nasopharyngeal area (throat and nose area behind the dangly ball in your mouth), into the Eustachian tubes (ears), or through processes that are too complicated for me to understand, through and around the sinus cavity where it can come out of the nostrils or, pressure builds and forces it up through the nasolacrimal gland (cry hole). Where it mixes with the eye-air causing what feels like acid tears. Side Note: If that's not fucked up enough, the vapors can even be inhaled. Like, into the lungs. There's nowhere it can't go (that's only a minor exaggeration).

I'm lucky because I also have gastroparesis (t1/2=174), a moderately tight (53mmHg) lower esophagael sphincter (I know, lol), spontaneous reflux to the aortic arch, a hiatal hernia at the GE junction, dysphagia and globus sensation. I also had a partial liver resection and 9lb, 20cm choeldectoral cyst removed in 2020 and brain surgery to place a stent to remove a block in my right transverse venous sinus, which was causing Intercrainial Hypertension (10mmHg pressure difference) earlier this year.

Needless to say my GI tract (um, body?) is fucked. Back to the acid-eyes, though: with my specific situation, there's a problem with the muscles that let food enter my stomach, and the muscles of my stomach don't fire correctly so it just...doesn't do stomach things. This is dumb for two reasons. First, it's very hard for food to enter my stomach, which means I involuntarily regurgitate nearly every meal. But! For the food that does enter my stomach, it sits there for 2-3 times longer than the normal stomach. This basically makes a pressure cooker bomb in my belly. Eventually something has to give, the sphincter blows (again, lol), deploying the acid vapor like a weapon into my upper GI and head.

One week ago yesterday I ate a can of Chef Boyardee Raviolis, and I can only describe the last seven days as truly bizarre. After one visit to the urgent care who sent me to the ER who referred me back to my primary care who sent me to an allergist who confirmed that acid tears were a possibility. I am now on a regimen of "monitor to see what happens" and medication to handle the skin autoimmune/skin/hives freakout.

But on a positive note, my PCP and allergist are wonderful. And my eyeball/vision isn't in any immediate danger.

I did some quick research, and there was an unprecedented spike in searches for irregular periods over the past two months. So, it seems to be a universal thing.Β

humankind hiccups πŸ˜… The way this German bakery writes their S.

Post image

Is this a common way to write S for Germans?

UPDATE: I reached out to the bakery, it's in a large US city, it was opened in 2011 and owned by a couple who immigrated from Germany many years ago. The sign was written by one of their workers who is not German, and does their community outreach/participation in Farmer's markets. This was the first time it was brought to their attention. Looks to be innocent, but not well thought out.
