A bit of historical context: The Gadsden flag was heavily inspired by Benjamin Franklin's 1754 "Join, or Die" political cartoon and his earlier writings comparing the timber rattlesnake to the American colonies. Gadsden presented the flag to Commodore Esek Hopkins, commander-in-chief of the Continental Navy. It was first unfurled on December 20, 1775, on the mainmast of the flagship USS Alfred.
