Just as everyone expected, UCLA is the last remaining undefeated B1G school

After defending national champion Indiana falls to Ohio State to end their 22 game win streak.

Classic Big 10 season.

On one hand I’m happy because I was legit worried they would embarrass us, on the other feel really bummed because the game was there for the taking with just even a bit marginally better play.

We need to kicking situation to get figured out, we are playing too many close games to have it becoming such a question mark

551

u/buckeyefan1930 Ohio State • Hillsdale 2h ago

Missing 2 field goals also doesn't help...ask me how I know

114

u/Geno0wl Ohio State • Cincinnati 2h ago

We have lost at least four games because of poor kicking just off the top of my head. Hell we more than likely have two more natties(one for sure) if we had above average kicking instead of below average that we have had over the past 10 years

41

u/PeteF3 Ohio State Buckeyes 2h ago

Georgia, Michigan '24, Indiana, and Texas this year. Basically our only pressure late-game kick that we've actually executed this decade was the clincher over ND in the CFP final.

89

u/muttonchops215 Ohio State Buckeyes • Iowa Hawkeyes 2h ago

Don't shit on both misses. One is deserved because it was short and gimme but the other the kicker doesn't have the leg for and quite frankly that might just be on the coach.

48

u/OwnWalrus1752 Indiana Hoosiers 2h ago

Yeah I was really scratching my head when they wanted to kick from the kicker’s range plus six yards. Just go for it and trust your QB (though I don’t think I do).

15

u/Marvin-face Indiana Hoosiers 1h ago

I'm ok with the call. If he made it, it would have been a huge confidence boost. Putting him out there shows confidence in him. And miss is "oh well, it was way beyond your farthest. Good try."

Speculating wildly, it could have been a simple math decision: 15% chance of converting and 20% chance of hitting the kick.

There was a point in the middle of the game where OSU could have blown the doors off and IU's defense + some suboptimal play from Sayin allowed them to make it a game. Sucks that it ended the way it did though.

I feel bad for Marsh. Indiana fans saying Ohio State got lucky. If he stays in bounds Ohio State fans say Indiana got lucky.

It's a bad take either way. Both teams deserved to lose. Horrible execution and countless mistakes.

Officiating was horrific both ways as well.

360

u/Mark_is_on_his_droid Indiana Hoosiers 2h ago

We made too many mistakes to expect a win. Hoover missed his receivers all day.

Also, that RTP would have been a BS way for OSU to lose.

153

u/pardonmyignerance Ohio State • South Carolina 2h ago

We could say the same thing about Sayin.  It was honestly terrible QB play for most of the game and it would have been awesome to see how it would go if both looked consistently competent.

40

u/boog2352 2h ago

I think both QBs were overthinking, too hyped, whatever, to start the game. I think they both calmed down, found the game, and the coaches made adjustments. Then, both got hurt. Sucks, still a great game.

This is a good take. Both teams made mistakes and had questionable calls go their way, seems like the better team edged out the win at the end of day

50

u/OwnWalrus1752 Indiana Hoosiers 2h ago

OSU’s defense is filthy. Indiana’s defense is filthy. Hoover probably isn’t the guy. Sayin has trouble under pressure but he’s definitely improved over last season. OSU can win even if Smith is taken out of the game for the most part (but he’ll still get his). OSU is going to be in bad shape if Sayin is out for any length of time.

41

u/Technical_Part8423 Ohio State Buckeyes 2h ago

Ive seen Sayin play scared before but I have no idea what this was today. Even when he had a clean pocket, he missed receivers by 20 feet.

18

u/BikingEngineer Ohio State Buckeyes 1h ago

He spent the whole game last week getting blasted from his blind side, so that definitely affected his confidence today. It didn’t help that he was constantly pressured right in front of his face.

81

u/Donny_Do_Nothing Ohio State Buckeyes • Yale Bulldogs 2h ago

That was the one time Sayin habitually underthrowing Smith worked out well.

37

u/Sir_Bryan Ohio State Buckeyes 2h ago edited 2h ago

Yeah it usually still works out to be fair because Smith is insane. Even today he should have had a PI on the deep ball under throw because the defender just tackled him before the ball got there.

This is the first game of Cig's where I feel like we just didn't execute well enough. That  last touchdown, as well as the incomplete/doink combo in the first would have completely switched the storylines coming out of this game

28

u/Wrong_Ad4722 2h ago

I think that is true but IU executed really well outside of a few plays. OSU had guys wide open and Sayin missing them and a backup not knowing what was going on. That deep ball to Smith early was a bad missed PI too. Sloppy game.

Rough way to lose, but Bucks were extremely tough defensively congrats to them.

On the IU side I do think this offense can build to being an elite unit by the end of the year if they lock in and keep getting better. Marsh and Becker are studs. Go Hoosiers!

E: Should be obvious but adding that I hope Sayin doesn't miss any time

In all of my years of watching football, I don’t think I’ve seen any WR botch a sideline grab like Nick March did today in a game like this.

Also, Julian Sayin got bailed out so hard because of Jeremiah Smith…he is not a big game QB and I fear that both teams are going to lose in the playoffs because of lackluster QB play.

u/dokocha0216 Ohio State Buckeyes • Rose Bowl 2h ago

Defense looks top tier again. Hate to dog on Sayin with the injury but dude looks like he’s going to waste yet another top tier team. Hes got no awareness. I miss Howard. I miss the athletic QBs. UGA, ND, Miami and Ole Miss look like the only teams with top, good QBs

45

u/Yourfakerealdad Texas Longhorns 2h ago

It could be worse. You could have Manning as your QB

You get the ball with 3 minutes and two timeouts. You KNOW they're gonna give you the underneath stuff til you get to the red zone. TAKE IT!!! Move the ball down the FIELD, get 1st downs, you had plenty of time!

Instead, you're throwing it downfield into the strength of the 2-deep zone. One ball bounced off the defender's chest that should've ended it. Another one should've been intentional grounding but ended up being RTP. This was a master class in how NOT to run 2-minute offense.

I know these things never come down to just one play but that missed field goal by IU in the second quarter seemed to totally change their game plan for the rest of the game. They were still winning but it seemed like from that moment forward the chase was on

Very rarely do you see a QB lose a game for his team without being a turnover machine as bad as Hoover did today. Feels like he left at least 10 completions and 100 yards on the field by just whiffing shit.

Not to mention only throwing deep into double coverage the last couple drives and needlessly pushing the ball to the sideline on that last one (although the blame is split a little bit. Gotta try to toe tap that).

Sidenote: between our game and this one, I do feel decently confident enough to say OSU may be cooked if they ever run into a strong passing game on a day where their QB isn’t eating crayons.

12

u/Iron_Mike0 Ohio State Buckeyes 2h ago edited 2h ago

Sayin was similar before he got hurt. It was two QBs trading misses the whole game. Ohio State just has Jeremiah Smith to help make up for it (directly and indirectly) slightly more than Becker could.

I feel like neither team is a championship contender at this point. Maybe Hoover can turn it around a bit but Sayin is likely done. Seems like two very good teams but not top of the sport this time.

The numbers for Hoover compared to the eye test is a mile wide. similar-ish numbers to Mendoza, but he just isnt a good QB at this level. He cant hit WR’s in stride and he sucks at going through his progressions.

I recognize my bias, I truly do, but I would really, really, like some of the blatant ass holding on game changing plays called. I get that if you ain't holding you ain't blocking, but come on.

Hoover got away with a lot of risky throws, but they'll still be a playoff team. I hope Sayin is okay, but the USC and Oregon games get a little more dodgy if he isn't. Good game and a terrible way to lose for IU.

I just want to say the Big Ten refs have been absolutely horrific this season, like way, way more than usual. Starting with giving Michigan a free win to begin the season, they just got worse and worse each week. I don't know what sorta adjustments or hires they made in the offseason but the conference has to really look at what they did wrong going into this season. But they probably won't.
