well one human was a small child who fell in by accident, the other was a grown man who was determined to jump into the tiger enclosure-to the point of overpowering a woman who tried to stop him from jumping into the enclosure

Nowhere in the article you linked is said that someone tried to stop him from going in the enclosure. It is written though that the man was suffering from schizophrenia.
Not arguing that any animal should be killed, or spared in spite of a human life, but your argument isn't a good one.

Also harambee not only didn't harm the child but very clearly made every effort to protect it from the other gorillas and the crowd
117
u/PapaTahm 2h ago edited 2h ago
That was not Harambe.
You are thinking about Jambo the male Silverback who actively protected a child who fell into the gorilla enclosure in 1986 on Jersey Zoo.→ More replies (2)37
u/AFlyingNun 1h ago
There's actually multiple instances of gorillas helping kids that get in the enclosure, which is why Harambe is so tragic.
He could've been just another gorilla trying to do exactly that, but we gauged his body language, the (unintended) violence the kid was facing from being dragged around, and also male gorillas are more dangerous, so for all we know, we shot an innocent gorilla that was just waiting for the zookeeper to show up.

Harambe was actively harming the child and refused to disengage even after the other gorillas followed zookeeker instructions and left the area.
57
u/ColdCruise 2h ago
Yeah, this narrative that Harambe wasn't doing anything is straight up wrong. There were multiple witness statements where they all corroborated that Harambe was violently throwing the child around, shoving him to the ground and holding him under water.
There's even a video where you can hear people screaming in fear.
4
u/nvidiastock 51m ago
I was about to say, you don't need to believe the statements, there's videos. Harambe was for sure yoinking the kid around and not protecting him at all.
→ More replies (2)14
u/100percent_right_now 1h ago
This is a false retelling of history. Harambe dragged the kid at high speed through a water filled concrete pool causing several abrasive burns across the kid's body. He definitely harmed the kid.
Harambe probably didn't intend to hurt the child, he was just confused, but humans are much more fragile than gorillas.
Ultimately though I'd rather be upset a gorilla was killed than deal with the fallout of the child being killed. Who knows how much gorilla hate there would be. How much potentially less gorilla conservation. It's an unfortunate thing to have to admit that outside the memes this was the better outcome.

Its a human being that died. Likely not in their right mind because they jumped in a tiger enclosure. What are you even trying to compare here? Is the child more deserving of protection? It's just sad. Glad the tiger didn't get hurt. In the best case we wouldn't even keep gorillas and tigers in small enclosures and zoos to be stressed out by hundreds of people. And no one would fall or be able to jump in their enclosures either.

Kids are seen as more innocent (and they are) because they’re tiny and don’t have a full understanding of their actions. An adult male is seen as capable of making their own decisions, and it’s not easy to tell if somebody is having some sort of mental breakdown in the act or just doing something stupid.
In the moment there’s a clear distinction and decisions are made based on that

It's because the tiger had already killed him by the time an armed response could get there.
If Harambe had torn that kid in half (as he could have done easily) then Harambe would still be alive. But because Harambe was a gentle giant, he died for our sins. And the world has been punished ever since.

Yes, they killed him because he'd almost certainly eventually kill the kid. If he killed the kid immediately, it's more likely he wouldn't have been killed much like the tiger wasn't killed.

I don't think it was a conscious decision, because saving an animal over a human could open them up to criminal liability for manslaughter. I think they just didn't reach him in time.

u/SeeWoke 2h ago
I think the difference is the little boy was with Harambe 10+ mins and they couldn’t separate them safely so to protect the boy and staff they decided to kill Harambe. The man who purposely jumped in the tiger enclosure was only there for 2 mins before he was killed by the tiger. Wasn’t enough time for the zoo to react. If the man was dead by the time they could get the gun there is no point to shot the tiger. Point of the story, Harambe should have acted faster.

If harambe had killed that kid immediately, he’d be alive, it’s kinda fucked up but that’s why get gets the halo he sacrificed himself
5
u/Darthplagueis13 1h ago
I mean, had Harambe just left the damn child alone instead of grabbing it, he'd also be alive.
Look up Jambo if you wanna know how another gorilla got out of the same kind of situation without as much as a scratch.
8
u/Darthplagueis13 1h ago
Difference between the two was, Harambe could still be stopped.
Like, the kid was still alive and Harambe was handling him in a way that could have changed this fact in the minutes to come.
The guy who got killed by the tiger was dead long before someone could have intervened.
Killing the tiger now would just be punishment, which wouldn't make a whole lot of sense.
And no, before you start babbling about the tiger having tasted blood and now being dangerous or anything, that's not how it works. Human blood isn't somehow addictive. Big cats usually become man-eaters when they're weakened or hurt in some way and discover that humans are easier to hunt than their natural prey. A big cat in a zoo that literally gets free meals isn't gonna develop a craving for human flesh just because it killed one once.
8
20
u/Ok-Pea8209 3h ago
So just to put some stuff out their.
This zoo probably learnt from the mistakes with harambe that just killing the animal isn't right and people will not let it go.
But also, the Amur tiger is incredibly endangered. With around 400-600 of its species left.
Harambe was a western lowland gorilla that still has a population of over 300k (still low but nowhere near as low)
Aswell, different zoo, different zoo keepers, different time. Still tho i agree with not killing animals that are just living their life. If your dumb enough to jump into an enclosure with a dangerous animal then you kinda deserve the outcome
24
u/ELIte8niner 3h ago
I mean, Harambe being shot could potentially save a still living child. The dude in the UK was already dead. Killing the tiger prevented nothing at that point.
4
u/Darthplagueis13 1h ago
The main difference is that Harambe was shot to prevent him from further injuring the boy (which he was doing at the time, even if he didn't mean to).
The tiger killed the man before anyone could do anything about it. Had they had a chance to shoot the tiger before it killed the man, they most likely would have taken it.
12
u/sarkany_lelek 1h ago
There are over 300,000 wild gorillas and only 5,000 wild tigers. Tigers are significantly more endangered than gorillas are, the idea of cat favourtism is dumb lol just look at the numbers.
Edit to say that tiger was an Amur tiger, which is even more endangered, there are only 500 estimated in the wild.

Yeah, they did. Harambe was handling the child roughly (pulling it around by the ankle with the head dragging across the ground) and people were worried he might kill it by accident.

It doesn't matter if the kid fell in by accident or on purpose, and it doesn't matter how old the kid was.
If an adult purposefully climbed into a zoo enclosure, and a gorilla started dragging them around the enclosure for 10 minutes, that gorilla would be shot to protect the safety of the human.
Harambe's first mistake was not listening to the zookeepers when they signaled him to return inside, and his second mistake was not killing the kid more quickly.

A tiger playing with you can punch you at 800 or 900 pounds, if it stands on you it will squash you.
A tiger trying to kill you can literally knock your head off or break your spinal column in multiple places with one shot.
The tiger punched him to death without even meaning to.
2
u/rey_gun 2h ago
The inquest into his death said the tiger bit his neck, so it def was trying to kill him.
The tiger did nothing wrong. It was simply being a tiger. It's a shame the man's mental illness wasn't being managed properly.

Harambe: got shot after a negligent parent accidentally let their dumb kid into the enclosure and Harambe died for just vibing
The tiger: was provoked by a drunk/suicidal man who was already being loud and got his karma yet the tiger lived

I would say killing the tiger after the guy was dead wouldn’t save the guy. However the child was still alive, and killing the gorilla would make sure the child stayed alive.
