It’s not an Iowa game unless you look at the box score and think “how the fuck..?”

594

u/Marvin_Stanwyck Iowa Hawkeyes 20d ago

The total yardage looks like a glitch in a video game

220

u/Rbespinosa13 Michigan Wolverines 20d ago

Total yardage doesn’t account for the special teams TD

144

u/KirksChewedGum Iowa Hawkeyes 20d ago

Or an intercepton at the two yard line.

117

u/aye246 Iowa Hawkeyes 20d ago

Or Wittingham inexplicably choosing to go for it on 4th down against KF instead of taking the points.

119

u/Fullertonjr Ohio State • Otterbein 20d ago

He’s new here. He will eventually learn to always take your points in an Iowa game when you aren’t up by 30.

30

u/TheMerryMosquito Michigan Wolverines • College Football Playoff 20d ago

For real. Some mind numbingly stupid decisions by coaches and players to keep Iowa in the game. Iowa took full advantage kudos to them

It's been a minute since we've seen a textbook Ferentz upset game like this, after choking them away against Indiana and Oregon last year I wasn't sure it'd ever happen again.

239

You just buy it out of the back of a pickup truck at the intersection of a backroad an a highway like everyone else silly.

100

u/BroadBrazosAvon95 Baylor • South Carolina 20d ago

I love how this is a universal constant in America, the only difference in what you buy is where you are in the country. In the south it’s either boiled peanuts or fruit. In the Midwest it’s corn. But every rural county has that one setup at a four way stop in the middle of nowhere that has the best food

I am thoroughly impressed. I genuinely don’t know how they do it. Every single time they have something going for them, they find a way to completely ruin their momentum with the least timely penalty imaginable.

Big play? Penalty. Third down stop? Penalty. Finally get some momentum? Believe it or not, penalty. At this point I’m convinced they could successfully execute a 99-yard touchdown drive during the National Championship, cure a major disease on the sideline, and reunite a lost child with his family, only for some dude to come flying into frame three seconds later and commit an unnecessary roughness penalty 45 yards away from the play.

It’s honestly an art form. Other teams commit penalties by accident. The Michigan Wolverines commit penalties with purpose. With precise timing. With an almost supernatural understanding of the exact moment when a penalty would cause the maximum possible amount of damage.

I’m not even mad anymore. I’m studying this. This level of self-sabotage needs to be preserved and taught to future generations.

I had an intern in 2018 who was from South Africa. He decided he wanted to understand American football and said he would watch Michigan (he knew I graduated from Michigan, so less to do with the team and more about corporate politics - I respect it). He came back the following summer as a full time employee. I will never forget him telling me “I have never watched a team where anything that could possibly go wrong, goes wrong. It’s absolutely infuriating to watch your team”. I will forever hold onto that comment as unbiased third party confirmation that Michigan just loves to shoot itself in the dick, or suffer from absolutely insane willy nilly plays.

So, who can tell me when the last time Iowa beat a ranked team on the road during the regular season?

u/DinoJockeyTebow Indiana Hoosiers • /r/CFB Bug Finder 20d ago

No clue, but I bet it was Penn State

It was only a matter of time until the mistakes cost Michigan a game. Probably won't be the last, either. GG Hawkeyes, that was some serious grit.

The penalties have to stop. Michigan squandered their opportunity to win this game multiple times with dumb shit.

That said, congrats Iowa, go defend your home field next week.

I’m glad we lost because of the dumb penalty. Absolutely pathetic that we do this every single week and it keeps happening. If it takes a loss to finally tell them to control there emotions then I’ll take it. Absolutely coaching malpractice that it shows up in the most critical downs every game.

A well deserved loss you can’t play with fire and keep getting away with it. This team is ass and it finally caught up with them.

Convinced Whittingham’s teams are amorphous blobs that perfectly match the opposing team.

There will be no blowout wins and no blowout losses. Only blobs of evenly matched defensive football.
