I have the same conversation with my wife fairly often. She now equates the flag with MAGA trash. I refuse to let them hijack the American flag. Although it is becoming more difficult. 🇺🇸
28
u/Relevant_Winter_7098 5h ago
I have veteran license plates and American Legion frames (with flag elements) that I specifically placed on my vehicle to reclaim the flag after J6.
It is becoming increasingly difficult to keep the symbols on my vehicle because of the association with MAGA and the assumptions people make.
But, I refuse to let MAGA win the narrative of what the flag truly means.
9
u/Secret_Fee1146 4h ago
you know it's interesting; we went through the exact same thing here in Canada after the trucker protests from a few years back, where it felt like our flag was co opted by ignorant malcontents, with many lamenting the loss of pride in it as a direct result. Ironically, it was the USA threatening the sovereignty of Canada that made everyone proud again to fly it. So thanks, I guess.
6

u/neopard_ 4h ago
simple fix just put a nafo sticker and a pride flag next to them or sth like that
7
u/Relevant_Winter_7098 4h ago
Watching MAGA heads explode when someone can have more than a singular position across the board is always fun to watch.
5
u/Dense-Law-7683 3h ago
Just like when people were protesting with US and Mexico flags. "Why are they carrying Mexican flags if they want to he here so badly?" Two words: Mexican American.

u/Relevant_Winter_7098 2h ago
They used to say that about the Italians, but they get a pass now. I wonder what the difference is? 🤔
2
u/DiabolicalSpaceKitty 1h ago
If you didn't know this, Italians, Irish and Eastern Europeans were given a seat at the Council of European Nations but were not granted the rank of white.
Irish people were even in the slave trade for awhile. They had it pretty bad.
Their perceived membership in what people now consider to be caucasian is a relatively new thing in the last 60-80 years. Racism for them was a problem for a very long time.

I have had disabled vet plates forever. I am an out and proud gay man as well as a left liberal democrat that would not even consider voting for any republican (except maybe Adam Kinzinger who like us today resents what that [arty has done to the country and sounds more like a democrat every day) to me saying you are a republican at this point is admitting you are a bigot at the very least and at worst admire Hitler and want to bring back death camps. But the one thing they ALL have in common is corruption, to the core, they are either doing it or cheering it on when one of them scores millions in bribery and "gifts." And that goes for the executive branch, the judiciary, and the congress.

u/Bacononthebeeach 4h ago
People in other subs have been saying that they’re seeing less trump signs around and yeah I’m seeing less too but they were just replaced by America 250th signs. I swear the only houses that decorated for the 250th 4th of July were the same houses with trump signs. They are the only Americans that aren’t completely embarrassed by our country right now. It’s sad.

They already did it to the Gadsden flag. Don't get me wrong I love the memes that poke fun of it. However, it's like the right lost the entire plot of "dont tread on me" part, it's supposed to mean "if I want to be gay or identify as a gender other than my assigned gender at birth then I should be able to." I've always felt that the Gadsden should be flown next to the LGBTQIA + flag. I'll get downvoted for this, but idc.

it's the same thing with what happened with the swastika.
For millennia, it was perceived as a symbol for peace and universal unity.
Now, current opinion is the exact opposite, obviously. As a non-american, you need to fight and fight hard, coz you're losing.
2
u/Own_Badger6076 3h ago
Well the swastika isn't even exclusively german to begin with, and unfortunately your average person is driven by their emotions and has a very limited understanding of history.
Basically people are stupid, short sighted and mainly let their emotions lead them around like a puppy dog. This isn't exclusive to the maga crowd by the way, folks need to remember that and be careful they don't join those who have basically turned themselves into what they hate already while flying a different banner and claiming moral superiority.
2
u/Flip_Flurpington 2h ago
We are an intelligent species, but we just choose to be stupid.
We choose, more often than not, to be stupid due to loyalty and love. The irony is, it's loyalty and love that are the epitome of civilisation.
This is the scale, and the weight that will be judged.
What do we love? To whom are we loyal and why?4
u/TheRumpleForesk1n 3h ago
Same here. Me and my wife decided on an American flag but instead of the stars it's a big peace sign where the stars would be. Still represent, but in our own way. Fk maga trash
4
u/accforme 3h ago
This happened in Canada with the convoy. Essentially the Maple MAGA co-opted the Canadian flag for their anti-vaccine, right wing movement.
Ironically, MAGA and, more specifically Trump’s 51st state comments and action have allowed Canadians to retake the flag from the Maple MAGA.

u/Cheap-Kiwi-1312 3h ago
Yeah I refuse to let them ruin our beautiful flag. I have one in my yard right now and I hate Republicans, never voted for a Republican in my life but we can't let them take the flag. This post definitely doesn't help the cause and just pushes further divide.
2
u/The_Defining_Light 31m ago
Hate republicans. Hate a belief that people have and the people who think it. Sounds facist. A wise person would say that you dislike the idea that republicans have, but not the people who think it. After all, its just an idea that aligns to them more then the other. This kind of thinking is evil, but a lot of the left seem to be on this wave length.

→ More replies (92)2
u/tzaeru 2h ago
Patriotism is really just one facet of nationalism.
Nowadays nationalism is so deep-rooted and such a strong default that it's barely even recognized. As an ideology, nationalism really means the belief that there ought to be a state for a nation, where nation is the people who share a national identity.
So nationalism is the ideology that says that nation states are a good thing and should exist.
But because that's such a basic everyday mundane thing, we don't talk about nationalism as being that anymore, but instead nationalism has moved to essentially mean aggressive, supremacist, radical nationalism.
→ More replies (2)2
u/VintageK-Po 2h ago
I perceive patriotism as a healthy love of country. And nationalism in its current form as you have described it, if you want to call it radical nationalism, it fits where we are now. History tells me nothing good comes out of that.
What we have most of all is a plutocracy that has pitted many of the rest of Americans against one another, aided by bots like the one commenting on this topic in favor of nationalism.
3
u/tzaeru 1h ago
After writing my comment, I tried to sort of google around for the more exact terminology, and I think the concept of civic nationalism and civic nation states kind of hit it. Can be contrasted to ethnocentric nationalism.
Personally I see it as kind of just very likely that "mundane nationalism" or "civic nationalism" sooner or later starts slipping towards "radical nationalism" or "ethnocentric nationalism".
Anyhow - part of what I sort of wanted to say was really that we've weirdly become to lack a commonly understood and shared term for the belief that nation states are something wanted, required, or desired (even tho USA is a federated state, it's in practice a type of a nation state; American people more or less share a national identity even thou it's less about one's ethnic history and more about the American values and the willingness to fit in, and the American state more or less is supposed to be representative of this shared identity by embodying its key values and beliefs).

I'm currently embarrassed to be an American. I think anyone who's even a little honest can relate to that. We have allowed corruption and wealth to hijack our entire political system to the point where there is ZERO accountability for any of our leaders. Trump just tramples and threatens everyone in HIS way, but says it's in America's best interest. Everyone sees the truth. It's a farce. And the American flag currently represents all of that farce.

u/williamgman 5h ago

It’s a shame, because I proudly fly 2 flags on either side of my garage, and I in no way support MAGA or Trump. I just recently had this same conversation with my 2 kids, that most people driving by would assume the opposite. It’s not going to stop me though. There was a time where that flag stood for something better, and I’m hoping we will get back to that at some point.
Edit: I didn’t realize that my post is that offensive, that people would feel the need to send me DM’s and spew a bunch of vile garbage. The irony being, that’s exactly what’s wrong with this country.

There was a time in the US when everyone could be a a proud American. No matter what country you came from, or your grandparents, or great grandparents, came from. If you were born in the US, or took a pledge to be a proud American, you were American. That one little bit of history aside, when 1/2-ish of the US broke away to try to make sure not everyone was equal, this pride in everyone being an American was a unifying thing.
Since that time, one party has worked very hard to limit what it means to be an American AND redefine WHO can be an American. If you don’t conform, or if you don’t toe the line, your citizenship could be revoked.
The other party is trying to return to what the US once was: we can all be Americans, respectful of each other including our differences.

I have a flag pole in my front yard that has the flag for the very opposite of what OP is associating the flag with. I look at that flag flying as a way of saying they’re not taking it.
I thought about switching it to a 13 colony flag, but I’m not living in one of the 13 colonies. Then it just became a wasteful exercise in overthinking.
That’s why unless the person is flying some other stupid flag (shout out r/vexillology ) then it’s silly to presume.
I’m sticking with it though. MAGA are some of the most unamerican pieces of shit we’ve had the misfortune of interacting with, and I’m looking forward to the day that these assholes are held accountable.

Heck, it fell off one time when I forgot to tighten it, and the truck behind me stopped in the middle of the road and waited for me to retrieve it. Dude was literally blocking traffic so I could get my flag back safely.

Think about it. The US elected a convicted felon, and rapist that is being influenced by the kompromat that Russia has one him, and no one in the Republican party is standing against this. In fact, they support him and cheer it on. Many people were okay with all the deportations until it happened to somewhere near them. A fraudulent citizen (Musk) has spent 1/4 billion dollars in an election year to help elect another criminal (Paxton). I could go on and on.
The democracy experiment in America has failed. We have a government of the, by the, for the oligarchy (not the people).
