Sharing My Sidehustle I make money checking if forgotten vending machines are actually abandoned

Post image

I honestly didn't know this was a thing until a few months ago. From what I know, there are a lot of vending machines that are just sitting around in old laundromats, apartment buildings, repair shops, and other places where nobody really pays attention to them anymore.

What I do is basically check if those machines are still being maintained or not. Someone sends me a list of locations and I go there, take pictures, see if anything changed, check if the machine is still plugged in, and report back what I found.

Some people might think it sounds boring, but it is actually interesting because you find some weird stuff. One machine I checked was behind an old car wash and it looked like nobody touched it for years. There were weeds around it and the drinks inside looked really old. I honestly could not tell if it was still active or if everyone just forgot it was there.

From what I know, the owners need the information because sometimes it is hard to know if a machine is still being serviced or completely abandoned. My part is just collecting the information and sending it over.

Last weekend I checked 17 machines and made about $146. I never thought driving around looking at vending machines would make me money, but somehow it does. :PP

It is definitely one of the weirdest side hustles I have ever heard of, and now it is one of the ways I make extra cash.

Discussion The RS3 Community Behaviour

For some reason the RuneScape 3 community is supposed to act like angels when we're opposed to an overwhelmingly disliked update.

Mod Anvil's comment about how our reaction was over the line is fine as a stand alone comment, but it doesn't exist in a vacuum. Reality is that OSRS players have shat on us for over a decade. Every single time RS3 is mentioned on OSRS there's comment about how they just hope the game would die and that it's just a terrible game. They are entitled to their own opinion, and I hold no grudge against people not wanting to play RuneScape 3 for the gameplay. Completely valid. However, when we apply the comment of Mod Anvil to the community of OSRS and how they interact with RuneScape 3's community, suddenly things are different. OSRS are "allowed" to say as much negative things about the player-base of RS3, how we are "losers" "sunk cost fallacy" and how our game is "dying, and they cant wait".

We have all read comment like this before. And obviously I'm not saying they shouldn't be allowed to comment things like that. They should, but for some reason we get official comments from J-mods that our behaviour is unacceptable. Isn't this odd to anyone else? Where is the official comment from OSRS community managers that them destroying the reputation of RS3 by spreading literally false information is not okay? Just wondering.

Finally, anyone who has been outside the Subreddit has seen the overwhelming sentiment from "new potential players" they gave up before even the cancellation, at the mere mention of changes being made. They were completely unwilling to budge on any point. Zero compromises.

Why is it weird that we defend ourselves, but not weird that others attack us? Just something to think about, I guess.

Again, I want to say that I in no way want to have people not be allowed to make comments like that.

What are everyone else's thoughts on this overall?

FML walked out of a date after 5 minutes

Post image
3.4k Upvotes

matched with this guy and he asked me out on a date so we agreed on a location which is a very popular food area after work but not the exact place we were gonna go.

when we got there he suggested this takeout bento place, i don’t like getting takeout for a first date so i said i always love going to this other restaurant (not too expensive like around $30) and he said more reason to try something new. i was like well i have tried the place he suggested before (and i genuinely wouldn’t go again, the food was not very good) but he didn’t get the hint and i didn’t want to push it so i was like ok fine whatever.

at the bento place it is a like pick your food, pay, and sit at the sitting area kinda situation. because i don’t really like the food there i was taking a few minutes to choose what i wanted to get. after a bit i was like oh let me ask my date what he’s getting. then i look around and he’s nowhere to be found, until i saw that he was already at the counter paying for his food? and without telling me at all he went to find a table to sit down.

okay so first of all i do think the man should pay for dates. i don’t do 50/50, and for context this guy works in finance so he’s not broke and the bentos were like $10. that being said, i wouldn’t walk out on a date just because of this because i know it’s really rude (it just means no 2nd date).

however, even with a platonic friend where we are splitting, i would not go pay and sit down without waiting for my friend to finish picking their food or at least i would inform them first so they are not confused as to where i am.

i was really baffled by the lack of basic manners of this guy. so i weighed my options: i could spend my money on this mid bento box that i wouldn’t enjoy with this guy what doesn’t have any courtesy OR i could go eat the food i wanted to eat in the first place and have a better time.

tbh i feel like i should’ve just left without telling him like he went to pay without telling me but i do have manners so i told him i don’t think that we are a good match and left to go get barbecue. it was a lot better than the bento! i also felt very empowered to know that if a date isn’t going well i can just leave as i have definitely stayed on dates for too long as i felt pressured to be nice and polite.

bbq i had instead of the bento!

Political Question Are Republicans inherently selfish?

Not referring to every individual obviously but as a whole, compared to democrats/independents they seem to really only care about themselves or their immediate family and pretty much have a “f**k em” attitude towards literally everyone else. Does anyone else feel this way?

This would explain why so many are against social policies but have no issue dumping much more money into the military instead, for example.

Gaming I fucking hate Hogwarts Legacy

Post image

A year ago i bought Hogwarts Legacy for like 8 dollars and it fucking stinks, i got 10 hours on it and im still being railroaded and all the character faces look like roadkill. I genuinely believe that game was conceived to actively hurt you (though i am trans so maybe its on purpose), i fell asleep for 4 hours two separate times while playing it and woke up at 3AM with sweat all over me because i was having a nightmare. Probably the second worst thing JK Rowling's done

General Discussion This relentless hate is getting ridiculous.

Post image

I'm getting really tired of people constantly attacking Wuthering Waves over its harem-like or romantic undertones when other games do the exact same thing.

I agree that Kuro sometimes goes overboard with it, to the point where the main story can feel like it's revolving around this alone. But enough with this ridiculous smear campaign. You're entitled to dislike the game, but stop pretending Wuthering Waves is the only game guilty of doing this.

Whether you like it or not, the presence of these elements in a game is not, in itself, a valid argument for claiming that the game is terrible. If that's your standard, then you might as well call every other game terrible, too.

News No Kings protests return to North Texas Saturday, two days before early voting

The No Kings movement is holding nine demonstrations across six communities in the Collin County area Saturday.

This time, organizers say they're concentrating on voter turnout rather than simply gathering people who already oppose the Trump administration.

Democratic congressional candidate Evan Hunt is also encouraging participation, while McKinney organizers have planned a six-stop vehicle caravan.

Full schedule and organizers' comments:

Weird Idea apparently you could make money just by giving random old keys a fake history

Post image
0 Upvotes

i’ve been thinking about how weird it is that you can find a bunch of old keys at flea markets for practically nothing, and most of the time nobody even knows what they’re supposed to open 😭

but imagine collecting those keys, making up an entire backstory for each one, then selling them as little mystery collectibles. like one could be labeled “room 204, 1967” with a handwritten note about some hotel that doesn’t even exist. you could even make these for escape rooms or people who collect strange antiques.

what gets me is that you’re basically selling someone a story attached to a piece of metal. the key itself could be worth absolutely nothing but suddenly it becomes interesting because of the history you invented for it.

i feel like i’d genuinely spend hours reading the stories behind these things even if i knew they were fictional lol

New York Is anyone else noticing all the microaggresions toward Sai from fans?

I keep seeing comments calling her 'aggressive' and attributing her words to 'violence', and it's alarming. It really seems like a black (or biracial) woman can't do anything right on these shows for these people. Meanwhile they'll eat up racist Ramona who threw a glass at Kristen and cut her lip, but these same fans don't call her aggressive or violent.

Discussion AI helped crack a 30-year-old Mario 64 mystery, with open, checkable evidence. One reply: "If you died I'd laugh." Is the anger about AI, or about losing the legend?

Thumbnail

Quick context: the plaque in Super Mario 64's courtyard is a 32×32 texture with letters 3–5 pixels tall. For almost 30 years people read "L is real 2401" into it.

I worked on it with AI (Claude Opus 5.5 for the pipeline and analysis, Grok for research and feedback). We didn't read the blurry pixels; we rebuilt how a 1996 artist made the texture (period font, shrink to 32×32, blur, gamma) and searched for the text that reproduces the real pixels.

  • Result: "Eternal Star / We hope so", in Adobe's 1990 Palatino Bold Italic.
  • Line 1: "Eternal" is #1 of 1.24 million possible first words.
  • Line 2: a blind dictionary search returns "We hope so" by itself.
  • The legend: "L is real 2401" fits about 2× worse.
  • Open: everything is public (code, data, a 50-page report), and anyone can rerun it.

The reaction on X was… intense. Some people engaged with the method. Others went straight to the reply in the image. Over a texture from 1996.

So, genuine questions for both sides:

  1. Does AI involvement make a result less valid if every step is open and reproducible? Or does only the evidence count?
  2. Is there a difference between "AI slop" and AI used as a research tool with checkable output? Where would you draw that line?
  3. Why do people get angrier when AI solves something than when it produces junk? Is it about the tool, or about losing a 30-year-old legend?

Antis: if you think the result is wrong, I'd honestly like to hear it. The repo is there to be falsified: https://github.com/supermochi64/sm64-plaque-decode
