Worst case is we’ll have a 138 team playoff.

I’d love to see Sacramento state in the playoffs.

Satire Ruling Needed on the THE

The Traveling THE can finally be returned to Ohio State today with a win. So far they are 3-0 in attempts to regain their Holy Definite Article, but Indiana is by far the toughest game they have had to win back the THE.

Therefore a poll: if Indiana wins should there:

A. Be no change

B. Ohio is then stripped of "Ohio" and it gets paired with the THE until such time as they can track both down again

Discussion Please help me understand one thing about playoff expansion - not caring about beating your rivals.

I am not trying to come off as critical of any fans. I just need help understanding something from the perspective of fans of perennial powers.

One issue I see fans having is the playoff expansion makes them question if they even care about beating their rivals anymore. It is not a common issue I am seeing, but it has caught me off guard the handful of times I have seen it. Specifically, I have seen an Alabama fan question if they care about the Auburn game and an Ohio State fan questioning if they care about the Michigan game moving forward.

While both Ohio State and Alabama are in a position to likely make the playoffs every year, I still don't get it.

The sentiment is those games carried extra emotional weight of a win propelling a team into the playoffs and a loss eliminating that chance. I totally understand that feeling may be lost.

But is that the end all be all about caring when you play your rival? If the emotions of playing your rival is only rooted in something being at stake for a championship for someone to care, then we have lost the meaning behind rivalries in the first place imo.

Discussion Avid FCS fans: Enlighten me about the 24-team playoff and its effects on the regular season

Is that playoff format preferred in FCS? Does the regular season feel like it matters? Are you happy or displeased that the FBS is using a similar playoff model? Any other thoughts?

I'm not requesting answers from people who watch a handful of FCS games. I'm talking about fans who watch the FCS season from start to finish, like most of us do with the FBS.

Their lust for this kid makes Texas games borderline unwatchable. Is it as bad as Bill Belichick's Tarheels or Shaduer Sanders? Debatable.

Opinion The Bowls aren’t going away

Despite some saying that this could be the end of the bowls or that they could move to the beginning of the season, I do not think that will be the case. Some of the bowls make too much money to go away. Like do you really think the Citrus Bowl, Alamo Bowl, Sun Bowl etc are going to go away? There’s no way that happens. Yeah, it will likely be against worse competition and players will still opt out but there are a lot of people who still care about the bowls and the majority of the G6 still cares about them. I think we will see some shut down, especially since 24 teams in the playoffs means 12 less teams participating in a bowl. I heard someone suggest that the first round losers in the CFP still play in a bowl but that will never work as the teams will not want to play.

Moving bowls to the start of the season is not going to work either. Maybe we will get some more neutral site kickoff games so I guess they are bowl games in that sense. The problem though is that the team who will play in this bowl is not the team who actually earned it. Yeah, there’s not a lot of loyalty in CFB these days but I’m sure there’s still some seniors who would want to play. Also, do we really want to play most of these bowls in the hot weather. You may have to do some more northern bowls if that’s the case. Not sure if anyone would want to play in the Sun Bowl in August.

I do think it is possible that they just throw bowl eligibility out of the window and the bowls just choose whoever they want. That, I can see happening. The bowls are already dead (as we know it) and have been for years. This will make it worse but the games will still happen.

Discussion Can new rivalries be made

Georgia and Alabama have had some crazy games over the past 20 years or so. We've had some of the craziest games. They had our fucking number but we're finally turning the tide on them(no pun intended lol) We won our first national championship in 40 years against a team that shut our shit down time and time again.

Yet people keep telling me this is not a true rivalry. But it's the team and game I look forward to the most now fuck florida. So I want other people's opinion, is this not the biggest rivalry in the SEC at this point or what

Discussion Is 24 too many? Not when compared to other sports.

CFB is now allowing 24 spots for 138 teams. That's 17%. If you count just P4 teams it is 24 for 68 teams or 35%.

Other sports

NBA 66.7% with play in

NHL 50.0%

NFL 43.8%

MLB 40.0%

Discussion So they just agreed to expand the playoffs to 24 while also mandating P4 teams play 10 P4 teams per season….essentially pulling up the ladder from the G6….

….entirely by making it impossible for G6 teams to actually schedule P4 teams. Many P4 teams will continue to schedule in state FCS buy games as the 11th game… limiting the G6 even more.

24 team playoff with 1 G6 team. And G6 teams will have almost no chance to schedule P4 teams?! And they sure as hell won’t have P4 teams ever play at the G6 team’s home stadium. Can’t risk that when you only have 50 million advantages! Actually playing the games on the field? Too risky! The P4 teams invested too much money to take a chance at losing. In fact, how dare the G6 teams want to play the games on the field as equals?! How dare they!

This seems like some bullshit to me. Let’s stop playing the sport entirely and give the trophy to who has the most money. A&M now owns the crystal football! (Until an Ivy school wants it)

Edit: An FCS style playoff with at least champion spots guaranteed should be the compromise if P4 teams refuse to play G6 teams and then tell them their schedule is too bad to make the playoffs no matter their record.

100 million advantages and they still don’t want to risk playing it out on the field.

Double edit: This is going to kill a bunch of FCS programs that rely on long standing in state rivalry buy games as well. Think of that whilst drowning in money, ESPN!

History "They low-down. They dirty. They some snitches." — The backstory

Bama has always hated Tennessee, but the following episode took the hate to a deeper level and inspired one of the best sermons in college football.

THEY LOW-DOWN

In the mid-'90s, the NCAA was on Tennessee's campus investigating payments to players and recruits.

THEY DIRTY

The bag operation was financed since the '60s by notorious Memphis booster Roy Adams.

How do we know this? Because Adams said so, telling the NY Times in 2013: "I knew the NCAA rules. I just didn't care for them."

THEY SOME SNITCHES

Caught red-handed, Tennessee coach Fat Phil Fulmer told the NCAA, "If you let us go, we will give you Alabama."

Tennessee was mad that a rogue Bama booster had outbid them for a recruit from Memphis -- the hometown of Roy Adams. By snitching, Tennessee gets off scot-free and in 2002 Alabama catches the near-death penalty for our 2nd major violation in 5 years.

The sanctions cause the deep fall of Alabama football and the embarrassing coaching carousel that some people in this sub may remember.

AMEN

Fast-forward to 2007: Saban comes to Tuscaloosa. During Tennessee week, a reporter visits Bama's campus to take the temperature of students toward Tennessee.

*A Few Days Later*: Alabama emphatically stops Tennessee's 11-3 run in the series with a 41-17 beatdown and it felt so good.

Opinion Opinion: Who's the More Deserving National Champion?

Option A) Undefeated team who played three final-ranked opponents (AP Poll - including the National Championship Game)... #2, #8, and #22

Option B) 1-loss team that beat two final-ranked opponents... #6 and #9

Option C) 2-loss team that beat six final-ranked opponents... #2, #3, #4, #5, #9, and #10 (and avenged one of those losses)

Option D) Undefeated team who didn't have a win vs a single final-ranked opponent

If you know the teams above, comment below as they all are recognized as National Champions by the AP in the seasons that they played (different years).

I am not a fan of the team that was Option B, but wow knocking out SIX of the top NINE teams is pretty incredible. We've actually seen quite a few champions from pre-playoff years that only beat a couple of final-ranked teams along the way.

So of course I'm bringing this up as the playoff expands to 24-teams and there is a group of people that will say "we'll have an undeserving champion". Do you really think a team that will have a good enough regular season to just MAKE IT into the playoff (top 17% of all FBS teams) and then have to play and defeat FIVE top-tier teams (ok maybe only FOUR more if they get lucky with some situation like last year with the Tulane/JMU thing) in back-to-back weeks would be undeserving?

I mean there's "getting hot" and there's winning FIVE straight games in that fashion with those stakes. You've proven yourself- it won't be a fluke.

Do we really want teams with cupcake schedules laying claim to the National Championship like Options B and D did and only being truly tested once- or in option D's case, never?

What are your thoughts?

edit: clarification that the options above played in different seasons

Discussion This week in press conference, Charles Huff compared his program to being a Navy SEAL and threw shade at prior Coach Silverfield saying “They didn't hire me to stand there with my arms folded and look like I'm lost." They had 6 turnovers and lost to a 4th string freshman QB last night.

Arkansas fans don’t even like silverfield but talk about hilarious timing. Memphis fans were so convinced that Silverfield was the only issue and then laid an all time egg with that performance. There is no doubt if you watched that game Memphis is the better team and lost. Maybe coach Huff should coach them like Marines or Air Force next time.

History There were only 22 postseason teams in 1970, 30 in 1980, 38 in 1990. There were 82 in 2025.

If a 24 team playoff kills bowls it might actually be closer to tradition than the recent decades of money grab bowl games. There were 35 non CFP bowl games last year meaning 82 teams, the majority with no tradition other than being relatively recent money grabs.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bowl_game#History has the number of bowls over the years.
