I'm gonna be real I wouldn't want to be anywhere near a car that can jump in the current American driving climate anyways.

208

u/AnybodyWannaPeanus 7h ago

There is zero chance that ā€œfeatureā€ will ever see public roads. The amount of compressed are needed for that would probably vaporize everyone within 50 feet in a minor accident.

I would actually be more comfortable if it did use propellant.

This was a publicity stunt and the only to only noteworthy thing is the vacuum downforce which also seems dumb when you consider it’ll be sucking up squirrels and random shit on public roads.

It’ll be a regular car with regular features. This stuff will be ā€œ2 years outā€ for the next 20z

u/beardeddragon0113 6h ago

"You know how our electric cars have giant batteries that sometimes burst into an unquenchable fireball that burns hot enough to melt metal? What if we add a bunch of highly compressed gas in cannisters around the frame!"

Makes the destruction of evidence more complete that way.

That Elon... always thinking, that one.

Also, can 1-3 seconds in the air even be considered as "Flying" vs other machines?

For example:

The Kiity Hawk vs Tesla Roadster, what flyes more?

Kitty Hawk wins by a wide margin in actual sustained atmospheric flight—whether comparing the 1903 Wright Flyer at Kitty Hawk or the modern Kitty Hawk eVTOL aircraft against the newly demonstrated Tesla Roadster.

The only scenario where a Tesla Roadster "flies" farther is if you count Starman’s 2008 Roadster launched atop a Falcon Heavy in 2018, which is in a ballistic heliocentric orbit rather than achieving self-powered aerodynamic flight...so not exactly flying, more like falling forever.

It was a concept car, and idiots are just lapping up the bullshit. Every single generation of Corvette from the C3 to the C7 had a concept car alongside it that was mid-rear.

This is nothing more than a thought experiment, and will never see the roads.

We've had rocket packs since the 60s.

Nobody uses them for a reason.
Same for this car.

u/fat_fingerz 6h ago

There isn't a zero chance, Elon was proud to admit how he was able to get road safety measures cut so that the cybertruck could get onto American streets, pretty much nowhere else, and with the current US we've got the cyberpunk without the cool robots and implants.

24

u/themostrealandtrue 5h ago

Road safety measures aren't what will stop this thing from going to market. Literally no insurance company in the country will insure this this, and that's what will stop this from going to market.

Cars that can jump traffic like that could never be safe enough to do that on a public road. They don’t even have FSD down. So regulators will either say this simply can’t operate on public roads or has so be disabled and air tank empty. There isn’t really anything comparable on CT from a public safety perspective. Not even close.

This is it. Firstly, the average American will never be able to afford this. The people that could afford this will be able to afford any damage they inflict with it. Are they going to try and jump over traffic? What reason is really behind the building of this? It would be a great getaway car after a crime. But it has no place on American highways.
Now, it wouldn’t be out of place on a less populated planet, say Mars? Or even the moon? I don’t think the rich asshole ever stated what the use of this car would be. All I know is that it can ā€œsuck the chrome off of a bumperā€, or ā€œsuck a bowling ball through a garden hoseā€, because his humor never developed past the fifth grade.

100

u/catwhowalksbyhimself 7h ago

Also, there's nothing that impressive about a jumping stunt car. There is no practical use of it, and if it's not already illegal for road use, it should be. It's goof for promotional stunts and professional daredevils only.

44

u/Thatsockmonkey 6h ago

I mean, isn’t that just a shell that he jumped? It was pretty much just a stunt drone, correct? There’s nothing about it except for the shape.

24

u/lothartheunkind 6h ago

Absolutely a shell RC. Probably had most of its batteries removed as well. If this was anything more than a publicity stunt, they would have shown the interior and given a tour of the build. We would have seen a driver get out of the car, too. And this will never see a roadway with a dozen high pressure canisters stashed away in all the crash impact zones.

Yes, and they hate it…… but even his idiocy can’t hinder their love of innovation. I tend to think of it as a Werner Von Braun situation, take the $ to try and better the world no matter who’s handing it out. While it’s morally questionable, I can’t argue with that attitude.

38

u/Reasonable-Plate2982 7h ago

Plus, while that's pretty cool and all, isnt he supposed to have fixed and delivered on promises made for more practical applications?

37

u/Vyntarus 7h ago

He makes his money by defrauding investors, not delivering the products he claims will totally exist "some time next year".

17

u/DW171 7h ago

Approx 1.5 million Tesla customers paid for autonomous self-driving mode, and are still waiting for it. It was promised back in 2014. That say's it all.

Interesting and possibly related: These kind of claims influenced the whole car industry to "catch up." I drove my father's mint 2015 Japanese luxury sedan on a road trip last week, and the automated "safety" features are far from safe. Think unexpectedly hammering on the brakes at 85 mph because someone passed me. My theory is they were trying to launch features that were far from market-ready, because of Tesla's claims.

CONSIDER THE SCIENCE BEHIND THIS.

If you have taken physics or you are science-oriented, you'll realize that this is very likely a sham. I'm not 100% certain, but if you think about the physics, what is being suggested is impossible.

Think about the enormous amount of energy required to keep this car afloat if it's based on propellant. Consider how Harrier Jump jets spend so much fuel to do something similar for a few seconds.

The only way to accomplish this practically would be to rely on a technology that counteracts gravitational forces without expending energy. The aliens that have been spotted sporadically likely use such a technology. But we are nowhere near that level of technology yet. [Edit - deleted: Our scientists still don't know where gravity comes from.]

100%. I am confident that the car that did a 0-60 test is not the same car that flew. That car I’m certain was just a shell with thrusters - A tiny motor and a tiny battery. It is all smoke and mirrors.

But even if it is 100% real, we will never see a single car on the road do any of this. The only thing you might see is the thrust 0-60 on a track. And if we see that, you will only see it once or twice a day. It would take way too much time and electrons to pressurize the car to consistently do this during a full lap on a track. Back to physics…it just isn’t practical.

The show was cute but not grounded in anything real.

With all this said, he tricked us in 2017 about the roadster. Odds are, he is just tricking us again. Plus, the new car does not look nearly as good as the 2017 roadster.

As fun as this was to watch, it is all meh. I guarantee that the Mission S will be a far superior driver’s car.

7

u/RaytheonOrion 2h ago

There is an airborne still frame of the car upside down. You can clearly see it’s a shell and not the actual car.

This is all so dumb.

u/WritersChopBlock 3h ago

If what you said above is true, I think it's outright fraud. I don't know if there is a law against this type of fraud. It's kinda' similar to how game shows were once rigged but are now illegal. It gives a false impression that deceives the public. Nobody directly gets hurt but I think it does long-term damage as people start believing in nonsense. In this case, people would invest in Tesla stock based on the false assumptions.

With all this said, he tricked us in 2017 about the roadster.

If what you said is true, I'm wondering why the SEC didn't get involved as it would affect investors' belief about the company.

It's a Mythbusters build. Like seriously it's exactly like something Mythbusters would do to prove that a car could technically fly in a Back of the Future II themed episode. There is zero practical value in this.

Zoom in on the bottom of the car, its obvious its fake, its a rig that probably weighs a few hundred pounds, not thousands. Also if you consider the speed it goes up the half pipe, its obviously being assisted by vacuum or magnets.

This is everything that musk is, a phony thats just convincing enough for the average person that doesnt know better. He's the personification of smoke and mirrors.

For anyone who has ever driven in the U.S., I’m asking this seriously. Could you imagine these being unleashed to the general public? The amount of deaths and property damage would be extreme. People here can’t even handle a four-way fucking stop sign or roundabout properly.

They can’t even get full autonomous driving perfected yet. I’m sure the safety rails on these would be as equally lackluster. Just what the average person wants, getting crushed to death while waiting in line for a bagel when one of these barrels through the storefront.

Is it cool from an engineering standpoint? Of course. Does it actually solve anything to make the current world a better or more efficient place? Fuck no. All that money being sunk into increasingly useless shit.

The engineering feat is relatively impressive, so credit to engineers who designed it. But the decision to design a solution to the problem of, "what happens if our cars go up a Looney Tunes style ramp" is the kind of thing an idiot CEO high on ketamine asks their engineers to solve.

20

u/kermitthorson 7h ago

elon had nothing to do with creating that thing

Anybody who thinks they can magically add thrusters to a Tesla and simultaneously keep its current driving function and range, is a fucking idiot.

I guarantee you if this Tesla wasn’t just on wires, it was stripped down and didn’t have 3000 pounds of batteries.

This is a scam that he repeating again. People are still waiting for the roadster for a decade already. It a scam to trick people to drop 5k on a waitlist spot and 250k 10 days later. To wait to get a car that have no real release date.

This is the dumbest thing in the world for a car you want to drive on the road. It a gimmick to trip people to try to buy it and make a down payment on something they will not see in years. It a scam that tesla been doing for years.

  • He definitely was involved in planning that demonstration
  • The demonstration is rather pointless - that version of the car will never be up for purchase

If anything that show proves her point.

Has anyone that Elon musk is not paying ever said he’s intelligent? It seems like the only people who call him smart rely on Musk for a paycheck, while every legitimate scientist and engineer not on his payroll think he’s a complete moron.

5

I feel sorry for the engineers that are forever ignored as people pretend that Elon designed the car and when they are mentioned people go "But who hired the engineers dumb liberal knowing who to hire is just as important."

Elon didn't design it, build it, or program it, he just approves payment for other people to make an expensive toy to juice Tesla stock so it doesn't lose value because he's overleveraged against the stock collateral. This little trick will never see the light of day in production.
